Backyard Bird Newsletter

Backyard Bird NewsletterBackyard Bird Newsletter (BBN) is the companion piece to the excellent Bird Watchers Digest (BWD) that I have subscribed too for years. It is offered every other month that BWD isn't published. I picked up a subscription to it my first year with BWD for I thought it would be nice to receive something every month. Unfortunately unlike BWD which is an excellent publication for birders of all interests and levels, (see my review of it at the link) I cannot recommend the companion newsletter. Its a very thin, (about 8 to 10 pages) pamphlet style publication that carries as many ads in it as helpful and interesting articles. I never spent more than 10 minutes thumbing through it before tossing it out each month. I let my subscription to it lapse after the first year. It is definitely not worth $16 for six issues to be sure. Subscribe to BWD and sign up for their free email newsletter that is loaded with helpful hints and article highlights. And forget this option. Bird Watchers Digest

I just received my first edition yesterday. I think it did have some good infromation. I thought I was getting a magazine not a news letter other wise it was OK.

Buy Backyard Bird Newsletter Now

I've subscribed to this newsletter for a few years but this newsletter is just that even has newsletter in the title so don't think it's a magazine. It's full of interesting information about bird species, gardening for birds, and more. It's not a glossy magazine to leaf through no color photos, etc... I love learning new information so I like this newsletter, although I can see how some might feel it's too deep or scientific. I didn't think it had much of any adds, except for a couple for the companion magazine.

Doctor Who - UK

Doctor Who - UKCome on, the cover price is only $8 USD. You can still purchase it at any comic book dealer and probably most book stores that have the ability to special order magazines as well as books.

It's a great magazine but, unless you don't have a choice, don't pay Amazon their extortion prices for it...

Going along with M. Blake:

This is a wonderful magazine, and is chock full of information on both the classic and new series great for those of us in the US that don't get to see it. The interviews, previews, audio review, etc. are all great. I especially liked the "Fact of Fiction" for the missing stories, as they give a very nice insight to what they were like.

What's not great is the pricetag from Amazon. The issues that I have are marked at 6.50 USD. That's only 84.50 USD for all 13 issues. Either get them from a comic book store that will charge you just the cover price, or buy them from eBay. Either way, you'll save yourself over 40 bucks.

Buy Doctor Who - UK Now

If you are a fan of the world of Doctor Who, you can not go wrong subscribing. Past, present, and future issues are covered on a regular basis. The magazine has in depth articles regarding its history and those who played a role in it.Each issue also comes with an animated comic of the current Doctor(in COLOR even!) and very professionally done. There are reviews on every new product including DVDs, CDs,Books, and Audio Dramas. Once a year there is a FREE CD issue that includes an exclusive audio drama from Big Finish Productions. There are very humorous and enlightening editorials in each issue. All spin off series are covered as well (i.e. Bernice Summerfield, Faction Paradox, etc. ).

Overall the magazines visuals are excellent. They have the largest library of exclusive Dr. Who photos on Earth.

The only thing that I can complain about is the price I could buy a lot of the books for this price. But where else are you going to get such extensive coverage? Cheap fan mags are okay, but this goes far beyond!

And for those of you who have not kept up with Dr. Who it is no longer 'just' a tv show it is a genre.

Amazon usually has great prices on their merchandise, but not with this magazine subscription. My daughter is a big fan of Doctor Who, and has bought this magazine each month for the last couple years, at our local Borders bookstore for $7.99 plus tax. You just have to check each month to make sure you don't miss an issue, but it's a lot cheaper than what they want here.

Want Doctor Who - UK Discount?

It's a glossy high quality mag. done for fans by fans. Cover to cover it's 66 pages of interesting stuff about 41 years of Doctor Who. Doctor Who Monthly is loaded with original color photo spreads and articles about the TV show, new and old. It covers related books, DVDs, CDs, appearances, conventions, merchandize, and more. DWM has insightful interviews with series stars past, present and future. The new series' producer Russel T. Davies, as a fan, gives exclusive info and interviews to the magazine, out of respect and thanks for all the years he enjoys DWM before working on the series. Learn TORCHWOOD spin-off info here first, which books, toys and DVDs are due out and reviews for them in OFF THE SHELF. Read set reports from the episodes in production and post-production. Read regular features like my favorite: THE TIME TEAM, a monthly column in which 4 reviewers are watching all 723 original episodes (about 8 per month), commenting and keeping track of "DEATHS ON SCREEN SO FAR" (830 as of episode 537), also "instances of 1 or more REGULARS BEING RENDERED UNCONSCIOUS" (163 as of episode 537) and " 1 or more REGULARS BEING INCARCERATED" (216 as of episode 537) on the CLICHÉ COUNTER. DWM is published by MARVEL COMIC UK so there is always a 4 or 6 part comic strip, currently featuring the 10th Doctor and Rose.

If love the series this is the best publication on the market related to the series, although DreamWatch is easier to find at a Barnes and Nobles, but you might get only one Dr. Who article in it. DWM runs about $7.99 cover (apart from AMAZON), publishing 13 magazines per year (there's an ANNUAL special), you can special order issues without a subscription at some bookstores or most comicbook shops. That's actually $113. 87 after tax, so for convenience (17 dollars of convenience, sir), the Amazon subscription at $130.73 maybe the choice for you or one at a time somewhere else, either way it's a great mag.

Elle Decor (1-year auto-renewal)

Elle DecorElle Decor is my favorite interior design magazine, along with House Beautiful--I team-teach interior design to adults and am always looking for stylish rooms, the latest design trends, and beautiful images to share with the class. Elle Decor delivers. I anticipate its arrival each month. The magazine is great for training your eye as to what's interesting, stylish and beautiful in today's design world. If you are wanting to update any tired and boring rooms in your home, or rooms you're bored with, it's great for showing you what's new or being reinterpreted in a fresh way. Then you can pick and choose what appeals to you.

Taste is about exposure and Elle Decor exposes you to what top designers are doing today so you can incorporate the elements you like in your own home. It features all kinds of rooms and styles in diverse colors from monochromatic to bright colors. One great exercise is to challenge yourself to find something you like in each room even if you don't particularly like a room--it can be a lamp, a rug, a pillow, or piece of art, but you begin articulating and stretching your taste. If you're looking for fresh, sophisticated, interesting design, consider a subscription.

A stunning magazine full of lush, modern rooms. Yes, there is little here that the average person can afford, but I don't want a design magazine that looks like a Pottery Barn catalog.I look at a design magazine for inspiration, and I read Elle Decor from cover to cover, including the ads. Many of the rooms are bursting with color. I find all kinds of ideas for accessorizing my house even though my budget is limited. If you have ever wondered how to put together all the items you've bought over the years in a way that pleases the eye, read Elle Decor!

I was a Metropolitan Home subscriber, and as an artist, I enjoyed the color, variety, and design influences in the magazine. When the publisher ceased Met Home, they gave me the remainder of my subscription in Elle Decor. Beige, ecru, eggshell, dull and traditional. No thanks. I think they killed the wrong magazine.

Had high hopes but this magazine was mostly pictures of over decorated designer homes. Very few prices listed or where you can buy it, just 1-800 numbers to call and order. The few prices they list are like 6 grand for an end table. The only articles were about designers lives not about decorating. Just wasn't for me.

I used to read and was a regular subscriber to the now defunct Lattitudes and Attitudes magazine. When the owners of L&A made a bad business decision that cost them the loss of L&A, I had to find another boating magazine. This is an outstanding replacement for L&A. In fact, this is a much better magazine than L&A. I wish I had found this one sooner. I would never have subscribed to L&A and lose my money with them due to their stupid way of doing, or should I say not doing business. This is a professional looking and professionally put together magazine. If you enjoy boating or dreaming of boating, this is a great magazine. Soundings is another great boating magazine. I highly recommend both, but if you had to pick just one, I would pick Cruising World.

Harper's BAZAAR (1-year auto-renewal)

Harper's BAZAARWhen funds were tight I had a difficult time deciding which magazine subscriptions to keep. Each women's magazine has a slightly different feel in the writing, though with increased competition, these styles seem to be in flux. I finally decided that I preferred the writing in Bazaar and was getting tired of what I felt was Vogue's Cosmopolitan attempt to catch a larger readership (if I want to subscribe to Cosmo, I'll bloody well subscribe). The featured designers are more cutting edge and less mainstream than what is found in Vogue. It's a bit snottier (though there are far snottier magazines if you are looking for extreme fashions). Among my complaints: Bazaar is an obviously thinner magazine, and while most of Vogue's content is adverts, it does seem to have more articles. Another item that I find highly irritating, is Bazaar's society items. I really don't give a ---who is wearing what at what charity gala, especially when I don't play footsies with these people. Those complaints aside, this is still my favorite fashion magazine.

... in the U.S. is Harper's Bazaar. You need only check out the recent covers in black and white, featuring Charlize Theron and Demi Moore, to see why this mouthwatering magazine is the high water mark for the best of the best of what's on offer at the supermarket check out stands stateside.

In a market crowded with magazines which look increasingly the same and seem to recycle the identical set of celebrity photos over and over again (snooze), Bazaar has cast an eye on the illustrious typography and design sense of its own past years. The results are evident on every glossy page, with very little of the guilty aftertaste here that you'll surely feel after flipping through the advertising book that is any issue of its bloated, mainstream market competitors.

Are the clothes ridiculously expensive for all but the richest among us? Of course. Do we really care about who showed up at what swanky party in NYC? Probably not. Will we ever look like any of those models? Darlin', you jest! But we do care (admit it) about the fantasy, the luxe, the allure of beautiful clothes on beautiful people -they're lovely to behold, it's only natural, and it's fun -you could do a lot worse than dropping a few bucks on this class act and its peer in the "shelter" magazines group, House and Garden. Another magazine not overstuffed with ads and perfumes and heavy on design sophistication, also highly recommended.

I'm sure she's a perfectly lovely person, but I have to say that the recent spread featuring the Duchess of Cornwall (that'd be Prince Chuck's new wife, Camilla) sitting at her vanity with an iPod in her ear was somewhat less than captivating ... unless you count all of the delicious little Corgis showing off at her feet (and I do) ... I don't understand how this got in, but sometimes these things are random, and she is after all the royal consort. Ho hum. Just a blip on the Bazaar radar.

Excepting things like that, way to go, Bazaar! Show them how it's done!

Harper's is the best if you enjoy high fashion. Yes, most of the items featured are completely unaffordable for the average person. However, by looking at the featured designer items and the gorgeous photo layouts, you can get an idea of what's fashionable or will be fashionable in about 2 months. If you want to stay ahead of the trends, this is a must-have.

Read Best Reviews of Harper's BAZAAR (1-year auto-renewal) Here

I guess I'm too old for this magazine now. It was so much better in the late 70s to mid 80s. Now it's too celebrity oriented, and many of the models are too thin and alien-looking--and too young. Back in the day, I enjoyed looking at the hair and makeup on the cover model, whose name I might know, but I didn't know her backstory, because she was not an overexposed celebrity. I don't have any of the old Bazaars to compare with the new, but I can sense that something is off about the design layout--too busy? too jarring? It used to be a pleasant distraction from everyday life; I used to look at this magazine over and over. I wish I had saved every old copy.

Would it be too expensive to do a retro version of this mag for us older women? I'm still thin, I work out, I love to dress fashionably and try new products--and I have money. I'm not 20 any more, but I'm far from frumpy, so don't dismiss this market too quickly, publishers. The magazines out there for mature women are condescending and do not appeal to those of us who still have a young body and, more important, a young mind. Also, they're full of pharmaceutical ads, which I hate. I do not want to be reminded of troubles when I am being entertained by my magazines.

I gave it a chance, then I canceled my subscription.

Want Harper's BAZAAR (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

"Harper's Bazaar" has been running a losing race with "Vogue" for the past 40 years. The magazine should play to its strengths. Its graphics and photo layouts are terrific. However, the articles are insipid and superficial; not worth a read. "Bazaar" unfortunately went downhill when Liz Tilberis took over the top spot; in the 60s and 70s the look was all about elegance and glamour. Ms. Tilberis stated in an editorial in the 90's that fashion was all about "youth and ectomorphism" and featured human Barbie dolls in grunge outfits. Okay, it looked funny, but what woman over 25 would spend good money to look like that? The impression one gets from reading "Bazaar" now is that it's still trying to find its target audience. When "Bazaar" stops acting as if it were afraid to compete with Vogue and emphasizes its strengths, it will be a much better magazine.

Coastal Living (1-year auto-renewal)

Coastal LivingCoastal Living is a professionallymade magazine with lots of enticing photographs, personal stories, and general advice on making the most out of life on the coast. The emphasis in Coastal Living is on waterfront property and the events and entertainment that often take place in cities with a large coastal area.

Much of what you read in Coastal Living pertains to betterknown waterfront areas in the United States. Such popular destinations as Boston, Miami, New York, Long Island, California, Cape Cod, South Padre Island, and other touristoriented places comprise a large portion of the featured articles in this magazine. Many of these places (like New York City) have very expensive waterfront property than can often be next to impossible to buy. But these areas also include lots of tourist activities, which is why they are so frequently highlighted in this magazine.

Besides the wellknown destinations, Coastal Living also includes a good number of featured articles on lesserknown places. Many of these lack the fastpace and the extensive nightlife of the more popular destinations, but they also offer better deals on property and an opportunity to get away from the chaos of the larger cities. Such places as the Delaware coast, Michigan, Ohio's Lake Erie coast, and others are often very quaint and interesting. Also, they offer property that is far more reasonable in price and is often within the affordability range for many buyers.

Much of the properties you see and read about in Coastal Living are quite expensive. But rememberthe majority of the homes are on major coastlines, so you can't expect to find them for selling for a low cost. These are highdemand, low supply properties and they vary greatly in price, but they are all expensive. In a popular area, these homes can sell up to the tens of millions of dollars. But in less popular areas, you can sometimes find some bargain prices on waterfront property. For example, Coastal Living has highlighted many Great Lakes properties that are priced very close to the overall U.S. average. They are not as cheap as most areas of the inner cities, no. But they are priced within the reach of many families.

The emphasis in Coastal Living seems to be on propertiesboth main residences and vacation properties that are adjacent to a major coastline. But there are other items promoted for sale besides property. And much of this other merchandise is also quite costly. In the "Currents" section, for example, it is common to find things like lawn furniture, cufflinks, fancy pitchers, and other things selling for many times the usual price. Most of it is intended for those who want a little bit more and are willing (and able) to pay the price.

Coastal Living is a personal magazine. Most of the stories involve families and couples who enjoy the coast. They share with the reader such things as how they keep their homes protected from the sea, what they do for entertainment, how they like to decorate, and why living on the coast means so much to them. Photos of families and couples often grace the pages of these types of articles, giving them a friendly, domestic feel.

Most of what you will find in Coastal Living relates to the United States coast. There is only an occasional article about other coastal areas, like those of Mexico, the Caribbean, and other places. True, you will sometimes find an article about Hawaii or Alaska. But for the most part, Coastal Living tries to keep its journalism concentrated on places that lie within close proximity to the majority of Americans.

Overall, Coastal Living is a very good magazine for people who enjoy vacationing on the coast, finding entertainment on the coast and, of course, living on the coast. The photography and presentation are excellent and it's interesting to read about the bigcity life on the coast as well as some of the more "unknown" destinations. It provides great reading and a useful reference for people who already live on the coast or who are interested in purchasing waterfront property.

You don't have to live on the coast to enjoy this magazine, you only have to love it. "Coastal Living" is informative and enjoyable reading that covers everything from decorating a beach home to getting involved with environmental causes.

From Alaska to Rhode Island, from Hawaii to Florida, and everyplace in between that has a coastline, you'll find well written articles on the best vacation spots, places of historical interest, great seafood recipes, architecture, saving the coastlines, travel and decorating tips.

If you are a lover of beaches or boating,a sunworshiper or have a strong interest in the coastline, the price is right for a subscription. For those just looking for some ideas on travel or a few decorating tips, you may just want to pick one up from the newstand and check it out first. It is a good size periodical, with many articles and beautiful pictures, that will make you just want to pack up and head for the coast...any coast!

Nice change of pace for the coffee table too....enjoy...Laurie

If you're looking mostly for affordable coastal decorating ideas, this is probably not the magazine for you. Five years ago (or more), the magazine content was different it had fun, affordable coastal decorating ideas. If you're subscribing based on familiarity with the magazine from a while back, you may be disappointed. I gave it 5 stars because it does deliver on what it says it has luxury coastal getaways/vacation/resort areas. I ended up canceling my subscription after about 8 issues, but it was no fault of theirs; just my incorrect assumption that the content hadn't changed.

I have been a subscriber to Coastal Living for about a year now and I have to say the quality of the magazine has really gone downhill. I got the magazine because it's eye candy. I wanted to see beautiful beach houses and learn about exotic destinations. Now, it's a knock-off of Southern Living and Better Homes and Garden. They seem to have a new editor (maybe the 3rd one this year) and even the layout has changed. They keep featuring these tacky cottages and reporting on the most boring things (200 things to do with salmon, diners in Florida). I will not be renewing my subscription and will try my luck with another magazine.

Really a great magazine if you love the seashore, islands, summer living. Eye candy that can put you in an instant good mood. They have suggestions for get-aways, decorating ideas for shore-type decors, even some great recipes. They don't just show mansions by the sea. Often they feature lovely cottages. I love to see what great ideas people have for small spaces. Lovely pictures. Beautiful scenery. Coastal Living Magazine--take me away!
