Art Culinaire

Art CulinaireI discovered this "magazine" while employed as the Reference and Instructional Librarian at a Culinary College. The four annual HARDCOVER issues arrive with just one ad the back cover. The recipe quantities are typically for a family size rather than the mass serving quantities. This is important to note because this magazine IS very much oriented towards the professional or the very advanced amateur chef. Profiles and articles tend to focus on the needs of the Professional.

One patron (a local sous chef who had graduated from a different culinary school some years earlier) began swearing a blue streak after thumbing through a few issues. When I confronted him about the outburst, he apologized and explained his behavior. For three years, he had worked under a local chef and been amazed at the creativity of the chef in coming up with new recipes for the restaurant. After thumbing through the issues, my patron had realized an ugly truth their entire menu was being cribbed from Art Culinaire. When I told him I had at my disposal a large stack of subscription forms, he immediately took one saying, "Next time, I'll be ahead of him."

Each issue is large enough and beautiful enough to double as a coffee table book (the paper quality and pictures are easily superior to most cookbooks), but you will want to keep every sauce-splattered issue as close to the stove as you can with burning the pages. There is no other magazine to compare it to and very few cookbooks that can match it.

This is an outstanding publication. Unlike most magazines and books, this is the real deal with full recipes from leading chefs. I simply do not understand why it is so hard to find. These recipes are complicated, but if you like to cook, you'll find this inspirational. Everything is well photographed. It doesn't get any better than this.

Art Culinaire is probably one of the absolute BEST magazines available to the culinary industry. Currently, I'm a culinary student and I have thoroughly enjoyed looking through each copy of Art Culinaire as my school has received it. Granted, the price is a bit steep when you're only getting four issues, but when those issues are bound like a book... They'll last far, far longer than any other magazine, no matter how careful you are with the others. Myself, I'm looking forward to having some cash free so I can get a subscription.

This is an interesting "magazine" -actually it is a hard back book with great photos and state of the art recipes. I just got my first issue yesterday, so I haven't yet tried them, therefore I don't know if the recipes really work. What I do know is that this isn't the kind of magazine to turn to if you are looking for a quick idea of something to make for dinner tonight. The recipes are complicated with many different parts and steps. That said, if you eat at cutting edge restaurants and ever wonder "how did they do that?" this will tell you how. Also, there is nothing that says you have to make every component of a given recipes. For example in a complicated recipe for fish with a chickpea crust -just the chickpea crust on the fish would be wonderful.

This is a very nice periodical. It's only suitable for the culinarily adept and adventurous if you plan to use it, but anyone can enjoy the beautiful photography and above par design.

More (1-year auto-renewal)

More The average woman's mag is either aimed at the 18-34 age group (Glamour, Allure) or it's for the soccer moms (Woman's Day consistently figures in the top five of all magazines for women. And for good reason.) But what if you don't care to make bunny-shaped coconut cakes for Easter or what if you are WAY beyond caring about bikinis or contraceptives? MORE is aimed at the mature babe who still cares to dress fashionably and who wants to read about women of a similar age.

Of course, the invevitable celebrity graces the cover (this IS what people want to read, apparently, according to whatever marketing tools magazine editors use.) And the articles are not earth-shaking or in depth in any way. MORE replaces several other magazines gone belly-up, as advertisers apparently don't want dollars from gals over 35, possibly because they spend their dough with great discernment; $250 for a trendy corset-shaped handbag? Hmm, maybe NOT. Since "Lear's", "Mirabella" and "Mode" all bit the dust in the last decade or so, this is what there is for fashion and forty or fifty year old female. Hey, it beats "Reader's Digest" for fashion advice, is all I can say.

When I was a teen, I read 16 and SEVENTEEN magazines. In my 20s, I read Glamour; Mademoiselle was my magazine of choice in my early 30s and Cosmopolitan did it for me as I approached late 30s. Once I got to my mid-40s, none of the aforementioned magazines seemed to speak to me anymore. At 49, I'm way past the "do's and don'ts" of fashion and "how to drive your man wild" kinds of articles. :-) I wanted to know how other women were dealing with middle age and everything that comes with it --weight gain, crows feet, menopause -as well as the usual beauty stuff! There are articles in this magazine dealing with taking care of aging parents, grown-up kids who won't leave the nest, making your way in the corporate world, and lots of other things that are relevant to women my age and their lifestyles. Also, I love the cover models! I'm never going to be as thin or well put together as Susan Sarandon, Cybill Shepherd or Glenn Close, but it's nice to see so many women MY age on the cover of a magazine I love!

Okay...so here we are...an elite generation of women who have watched the world change for the last 35 years or so and we were a big part of it. We are women of a certain age(ahem), that are old enough to remember the Kennedy Assassination, Woodstock, our boyfriends going off to Viet Nam, the Swinging Seventies and raised a whole new generation...and yes...are proud of it. So now we are what may be considered grown up(I'm still not sure about that part)...what's next? What MORE is there out there?!....Do we want to sit at home raising another generation and be the snack monitor for the grandkids soccer team?...Heck no! Okay occassionaly but.. We Want MORE than that!

MORE magazine bills itself as being 'Smart Talk For Smart Women'...and it is! This magazine is chock full of motivating stories and articles of inspiring women(some famous, some not so famous) making the most of their lives.Women who like us, who have "been there and done that" are now finding new and fulfilling directions in their lives. From starting your own business to starting a new relationship, you'll find it all here. There are fabulous features on health, beauty tips, fashion advice for the 40 and up gal,and some great financial advice as well.

Finally a magazine geared toward more than good housekeeping(if you are like me, and haven't gotten that part down by now...fahgetaboutit!)It's a pretty good size periodical, and not because it is filled covered to cover with gorgeous models. What you'll find instead, are true role models!

So between the ads for the newest and best wrinkle cream(Yeah Sure), to the best fiber supplement, you will find many intellegent, informative and motivational reads! The subscription price offered here is a great value.(I always think it is best to get an issue from the newstand to check out first).

Now available a 2 year subscription a really good deal:More Magazine (2-year)

For yourself or a gift....you go girl!...and enjoy...Laurie

Of the numerous magazines I subscribe to, this is one of the most useful for women over 40. No bimbo articles, no articles about 10 ways to contort oneself---well, you get the idea. What it DOES have is informative and intelligent articles such as the recent one about common haircolor mistakes made by mature women, complete with before-and-after pictures. There are some fun articles, and some articles like another recent one about the women in President Bush's inner circle of advisors. (Very reassuring, that one.) The newstands either don't get many copies, or they sell quickly, so you may not have seen it, but it's worth a look!

Who doesn't want to look her best???? Yes this magazine does use space to talk about clothes and looking good. One of my favorite fashion pages is where they have three different readers/models wear an outfit and comment on it. All the women are over 40 and the comments aren't always flattering it seems real. There also is some serious commentary and subjects broached that overall appeals to women over 40 and other intelligent people. I don't believe that if you are a woman over 40 you will regret subscribing to this publication. Just flip through an issue at the newstand and you will be convinced.

Sheep Magazine

Sheep MagazineSheep! Magazine is the only periodical really interested in helping real sheep people get a lot more profit.

It's NOT an "industrial" type rag that just re-prints government gobbledygook--it's always and only focused on real sheep growers and how they make good money on their own.

Lots of sheep growers from all over the world write in to Sheep! Magazine sharing their experiences, questions, updates and discoveries.

Sheep! has a world-famous vet that answers questions, a top shearer that does the same, the world's foremost predator guy, an Almanac section that tells about high-paying ethnic and religious sheep consumers--what they need and the dates they're going to buy--plus lots of price tables that help decide what to charge.

After some serious math, I figured we made about 8 times the cost of the subscription back each year, without even working at it.

I don't always agree with its editorial positions, but hey, the magazine makes me money so it's worth it. If you do purebreds, I recommend listing in the magazine, no other (for the $) even came close to their return.

I look forward to the mag. every month. It is a great source of infomation, as well as beautiful photos of the sheep that sheep herders love.

New American Paintings

New American PaintingsIn my opinion, when it comes to knowing the heart beat of American painters, no publication comes close to the Open Studio Press' "New American Paintings." Published six times a year, it's a juried exhibition in print. Each competition is cataloged in a regional volume of New American Paintings: Northeastern, Mid-Atlantic, Southern, Midwestern, Western and Pacific Coast and presents the work of roughly 40 painters. Featured artists are selected on the basis of artistic merit by one juror and receive four pages of their work, bio and artist statement for free. Finalists are either over-the-top technical executionists or fresh, original, new visionaries in our field of painters. Go to their website to find out how to apply.

I have been a subscriber for ten years and have saved all by issues. When my copy arrives in the mail, it's like receiving a birthday present!

You can either subscribe annually ($89 for six editions) or pick up single copies at popular book stores for $20.

World of Interiors

World of InteriorsI wouldn't want to imagine life without WOI. It would be a dim affair. I have subscribed for 10 years and every issue of the magazine contains something unforgettable.

I am not an interior designer. I am fascinated by how people live. UNIQUELY, of all the so-called "shelter" magazines, WOI actually is all about YOUR interior life. There will be an article abut some upscale Chelsea apartment, then an article about a mad old guy who has covered his walls in buttons, or a couple that lives as if it is always 1860 in their apartment. I love it.

If you've been reading design magazines and catching home interiors stories over the years you might be closing the book and wondering what catalog house everyone's extracting their furnishings from. Every shot seems to be color coordinated to the nth and filled with flowers. Flowers! Flowers! "Cookie Cutter" for all price ranges doesn't begin to describe the conformity of the glossies right now.

Frustrated, and holding fond memories of browsing the shots of unique European estates in vintage magazines (Helene De Rothchild's dressing room!), I searched the web for WOI. Knew it was pricey but needed something real. Every month I've been rewarded with images from all over the world of the most fascinating rooms, gardens, mansions etc...that give untold inspiration and wonderment. What makes them so special is their individuality and home-owners who are unafraid to be exceptional in the true sense of the word. I marveled at a shot of a kitchen in Argentina. Tiny room, 2 old school chairs, a stone table, a window. No new fixtures, no crazy antiques. I puzzled until I understood that the editors saw the beauty of clean lines, airy simplicity and intentional composition. They had transported me to a different aesthetic leaving behind all snobbery. I asked for authenticity, lush photography, and exquisite cosmopolitan taste and...I got it. Thank you WOI.

WOI is just the best. If you are going to get one interior magazine, this is it. I've received WOI since the late 80's with only a few years of withdrawl (and those were sad times). It's creative brainfood and inspiration of the highest quality showing up in your mailbox every month... there's nothing better. No, really.

I stumbled upon this Tome a while back and was very taken with it. Not only are the layouts fabulous but the writers add just a touch of humour to the articles. One of the things I have drawn from the issues is their use of color. I have been able to really track my own preferences from the photos and add them to my storyboard inspiration. Further, the articles are fun and informative, I actually READ them through. WOI manages to be incredibly informational as well as fun. I love finding the "Wink Wink" bits scattered throughout.

I have in-fact, actually contacted some of their featured designers and been very pleased with the results. The magazine may seem unrealistic at first but it is actually very obtainable. Lots of fun and beauty.

One of my favorite features is the learning curve. I discover so much about various cultures in the esoterica of the design world.

Wonderful Magazine.

Want World of Interiors Discount?

This magazine's trade is in ideas; its concern is with the ways people (actual people) can take the fundamental elements of art and reflect them in the places they live and pieces they live with. While certainly there are showcased products (and lots of almost pornographically delicious ads), I have never finished an issue feeling covetous or frustrated, but rather invigorated and full of ideas. That alone sets it miles (km?) from anything else in its genre, but there is also an incredible plurality of aesthetics, equal devotion to opulence and simplicity, preserved antiquity and innovation. Pretty cool.

As someone else mentioned, the writing is genuinely interesting and faithful to what has been invested into these spaces, not who has been investing in the publication. Inspiration also comes from anywhere, such as a wonderful spread on the 18th-century watercolorist JMW Turner, which left me wondering what other impossibly stupid blindspots I secretly harbored like "landscapes are boring." Many, I'm sure, which is why I subscribe to World of Interiors--to help me see anew!!

Sailing World (1-year auto-renewal)

Sailing WorldSailing World is a beautiful, well-written magazine! It comes with gorgeous pictures and coverage of international, college and local races and regattas, as well as contains many technique articles complete with pictures and diagrams to reinforce or introduce solid techniques to a beginning or even experienced sailor. When I can't get out to sail, I turn to Sailing World to bring the world of sailing to me! It always has excellent coverage of America's Cup as well as other local regattas in California, where I live. It is timely and the information is always very current and holds the latest news in tech issues, new products on the market and current standings. Excellent coverage and exclusive articles that I haven't seen anywhere else. This publication helps you concentrate on being the best sailor that you can, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro. I recently took up sailing a few years ago and this has been like my sailing bible!

I get three "boating" magazines: Sailing, Sail and Soundings (a general boating magazine highly recommended). Each one has a special place on my coffee table.

The strength of this magazine is, first and foremost, the sections titled: `Perry on Design' and the `Used Boat Notebook' (and its accompanying side bar `Value Guide'). `Perry on Design' covers briefly the designs of the new offering hitting the market. `Used Boat Notebook' is the "Car & Driver" review for used boats: much more thorough than `Perry'. This outstanding section covers: Impressions, Construction, What to Look for, On Deck, Down Below, Engine, Under Way and a succinct conclusion that raps it up This section alone is the main reason I get this magazine. Other reasons are the magazine's beautiful color photos and a section called `Boat Doctor', information on technique and safety.

If you are a sailor, serious or a wannabe, you can't go wrong with "Sailing". Strongly recommended.

If you only have time or space for one sailing magazine, this would be it! From the professional to the enthusiastic beginner, Sailing World is a must for the sailing afficianado. Where else can you find a balanced, well-written magazine that not only covers collegiate sailing, new products, America's Cup, international sailing, new boats, expert techniques, and intelligent editorials. I have found that other sailing publications try to be "too much" and they lose their focus in either large and countless advertisements to pay for their large format, or juxtapose a beginner's article against a highly technical article for experts, leaving the reader confused. This is the only sailing magazine I subscribe to and will continue to. You must have this magazine!
