Sueddeutsche Zeitung - Daily - Mon-Sat

Sueddeutsche Zeitung - Daily - Mon-SatThis is Germany's leading quality daily. It has a paid circulation of more than 445,000 copies and it is one of the few newspapers with an increasing number of readers. Its readers are among the best educated and top earners in Germany. If you are interested in more data you can find it here:

Personally I like top stories on the first page, the background information on the second, the reportage on page 3 and leaders on page 4, especially if written by Dr. Heribert Prantl. Then they have broad coverage of German and international news. They have more space for editorial content than almost any other German daily. The feature pages ("Feuilleton") are a pleasure to read, especially the articles about politics. Of course there is an business section but I prefer to read The Economist about things like this. Since the paper is edited in Munich they always have some Bavarian news, too. So if you want to know about Oktoberfest, this is your paper. Last, not least there is the famous Streiflicht, a daily gloss on the first page which gives you a refreshing view about the "really important" news today.

Mailbox - Grades 2-3 Edition

Mailbox - Grades 2-3 EditionJust like the other reviewer mentioned, the Mailbox magazine is a good source for the occasional great classroom idea. However, they were warning me it was time to renew right after I got my first issue with almost the whole year left in my subscription. The renewal request flurry escalated to phone calls every week that continued up until I finally demanded they stop calling me. Given that my school may ask me to go up or down in grade-level classroom instruction for next year, how would I know to which magazine I should subscribe that far in advance anyway?

If you don't mind all the renewal notices and calls, it's a good source of ideas, especially when you need something in a hurry.

I love this magazine for teachers by teachers. The pictures and instruction ideas for current monthly topics are wonderful. I couldn't live without it. In our school we share, save and steal this magazine from each other. The best part of the magazine is it is teacher friendly with minimal planning so that teachers can use the ideas easily. Mailbox prepares worksheets and easy instructions for tons of projects. I don't think there's anything like it out there. If you teach children, they'll love you for subscribing. It's the cat' pajamas. Bonnie Gaynor

I am disappointed that my first issue of Mailbox 2-3 will not arrive until November. I ordered in July, and I was hoping that the arrival date would be, at least, by September.

I've had this magazine for the past year and have used several of the tips, activities, posters, etc. However, I have also gotten endless emails from Mailbox promoting products and asking me to renew way in advance. This continues though I asked them to stop. For the last three or four weeks, they've been calling me on the telephone every day. This continues though I asked them to stop. The few good ideas in each $6 issue are nowhere near worth the trouble of dealing with this harassment.

Want Mailbox - Grades 2-3 Edition Discount?

I was going to buy this as a gift, but after reading the reviews I have decided it's not worth the spam and daily phone calls. However, I searched around some more and found out that Amazon sells this for the exact same price as retail (even though they claim you are saving money off some higher price). So, if you want to avoid the harassment but pay the same price, buy it directly from the distributor but use a fake phone number and a throw-away email address. That's what I may do.

Creative Machine Embroidery

Creative Machine EmbroideryIf you are tired of doing the same old things over and over again with your embroidery machine, then this magazine will give you lots of ideas. I mean, who would have thought of embroidering on balsa wood???!!! Yes, really! There is an article on just how to do that in the Nov/Dec 2010 issue. The magazine is filled with lots of projects and tips on machine embroidery. And be sure to go to their website to download free designs.

The magazine's website offers a better price for this subscription; 20% off the price here. It also provides lots of free embroidery patterns for machine embroidery.

I bought this magazine subscription for my wife and after comparing prices I found that Amazon had a better subsciption price than anywhere else. My wife got a special discounted renewal price from the publisher but Amazon was still better! I don't know how it's possible but maybe this magazine gives a good payout to Amazon because of the huge audience available.

The Wall Street Journal (weekend edition)

The Wall Street JournalI renewed my WSJ subscription through Amazon because it saved me over $125 per year. ($249 vs. $376.) Amazon states that you can renew through their service, as well as buy new subscriptions. But it has been a major headache. I started receiving 2 issues. When I called WSJ, they said that you cannot renew through Amazon, that this has to be handled as a 2nd subscription. All they could do is put my first subscription on hold for 12 months until my new subscription runs out. Then restart my first subscription for the 2 months that remain on it. WSJ is inflexible and acts like they don't have anything to do with the subscriptions purchased through Amazon. I would advise anyone else purchasing a renewal to Wall Street Journal through Amazon to wait until you have about 3 weeks left on your subscription before renewing. You may end up missing a few issues before your new subsciption kicks in, but that is better than trying to deal with WSJ's customer service dept.

Love the product there was a problem with "forwarding" the order so it has yet to come.

Buy The Wall Street Journal (weekend edition) Now

If you like to get all the business news of the week consolidated in one publication, the WSJ weekend edition is definitely something to order. It's so "meaty"; my husband and I look forward to getting it each Saturday. And at $1/issue, a great bargain.

Back in the mid-60s I started investing in the stock market. I was a long way from New York and Wall Street and I needed an accurate news source regarding the business community. I'd buy the Wall Street Journal at the bookstore where I work (San Diego State). It would be a day late, but that was okay. To give you an idea of how long ago that was, it was $.25 a copy and it came in one section.

Finally, I began to subscribe to the WSJ and it then arrived by mail (a day late) and came in two sections. Finally, they started delivering it here in San Diego and then I got it on the day of printing, although the news could still be a little old. No problem. The WSJ has grown quite a bit. It used to be strictly M-F business news and had no photos. Now, it's a full-spectrum newspaper and even has colored photos. It's still strongly oriented toward business, I should add. The WSJ used to be one section only and now it is three or four sections and has a weekend issue on Saturday.

I like the Journal. The news is accurate and reliable. It's not prone to fads. People say it's conservative, but I find it to be non-biased in it's news. It tends to lean Republican in it's editorial content but the bias there is acceptable to me. It's an expensive newspaper, but it's worth it.

Highlights High Five

Highlights High FiveI'm very impressed. At first I was bummed because Grandma sent this and didn't listen to me. I wanted Ladybug for my 3 year old. I think this one has more content. We looked at a ladybug once and we keep coming back to the High Five because there is so much stuff to do in it. There's 34 pages in the March 2007 issue.

Here's the table of contents:

Let's Read Aloud together! 7 poems/stories of a variety of topics and art styles

Let's Puzzle it Out! 5 puzzlesa few are very easy so she feels successful but there are couple more challenging ones (but not too)

Let's Make Something! 3 crafts/recipes

Let's Move! 2 different activities

Very happy and looking forward to next month's magazine!

I came across this wonderful magazine in the periodicals section of my local grocery store and was immediately taken by it...it says on the cover that it is "advertising-free" and that prompted me to take a look inside.

The magazine has an interesting & creative layout. The illustrations are bold, bright & beautiful, and the activities are age appropriate [target age group is 2-6 yrs]. My two and a half year old loves this magazine...I read the stories to her, and we do the activities like crafts & coloring together. An added bonus is that the pages are sturdier than your average magazine and will keep relatively well. The issues are all so beautiful that I will keep them for a few years, to be read and reread until my daughter outgrows them. And it truly is ad-free...a value buy!

Buy Highlights High Five Now

I recently bought this magazine subscription for my 5ry old and I'm so glad I did! Just as with Highlights (for slightly older kids) this holds true to the simple values and gentle lessons of kindness, friendship...and learning, but on a little kid's level. My son just received his first two issues and they have yet to be removed from the living room...he looks at them daily...sometimes hourly!!! There are activities, stories (beginning phonics) and hidden pictures that keep him busy (and his brain working) for at least an hour at a time! This subscription gives any child the 'highlight' of going to the mailbox for HIS mail and he loves it. This subscription would make a great gift too! Well worth the moneyI'll get it it again next year!

This is a wonderful magazine. My son (age 4) loves the activities, which are age appropriate. He loves to lay down for a rest and look through the magazine. I love the variety of activities/reading in High Five and that the stories promote interest in reading. It is fun and educational. My only regret is that it is NOT weekly!

Want Highlights High Five Discount?

I got High Five for my three-year-old daughter at a huge discount. I will renew even if that opportunity doesn't present itself when it's time. There are poems, songs, action games, find-the-picture, and each magazine has a game to play outside the magazine as well. At Easter time, for example, it had a poem about colored eggs, and the game to cut out was a color matching game with the different colors of eggs. My daughter really loves this magazine. I love the fact that it encourages dialogue about relationships inside and outside the family. It gives my daughter a chance to develop fine motor skills and even gross motor skills each issue also has a song that has "movements" to it: making a fun way for my daughter to use her hands and get some exercise. There is always a recipe that we can try together, and most of them have been a big hit. We learned how to make puppets, play dough, and other fun crafts that have been the highlight of our reading time. I am impressed by the preschool version of Highlights. If it hadn't been for the reputation of Highlights as a great kids magazine, I would not have looked twice at High Five. But, rest assured, it's a great way to be involved with your pre-schooler and will teach your child important skills for school and life in general.

Sailing World (1-year auto-renewal)

Sailing WorldSailing World is a beautiful, well-written magazine! It comes with gorgeous pictures and coverage of international, college and local races and regattas, as well as contains many technique articles complete with pictures and diagrams to reinforce or introduce solid techniques to a beginning or even experienced sailor. When I can't get out to sail, I turn to Sailing World to bring the world of sailing to me! It always has excellent coverage of America's Cup as well as other local regattas in California, where I live. It is timely and the information is always very current and holds the latest news in tech issues, new products on the market and current standings. Excellent coverage and exclusive articles that I haven't seen anywhere else. This publication helps you concentrate on being the best sailor that you can, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro. I recently took up sailing a few years ago and this has been like my sailing bible!

I get three "boating" magazines: Sailing, Sail and Soundings (a general boating magazine highly recommended). Each one has a special place on my coffee table.

The strength of this magazine is, first and foremost, the sections titled: `Perry on Design' and the `Used Boat Notebook' (and its accompanying side bar `Value Guide'). `Perry on Design' covers briefly the designs of the new offering hitting the market. `Used Boat Notebook' is the "Car & Driver" review for used boats: much more thorough than `Perry'. This outstanding section covers: Impressions, Construction, What to Look for, On Deck, Down Below, Engine, Under Way and a succinct conclusion that raps it up This section alone is the main reason I get this magazine. Other reasons are the magazine's beautiful color photos and a section called `Boat Doctor', information on technique and safety.

If you are a sailor, serious or a wannabe, you can't go wrong with "Sailing". Strongly recommended.

Buy Sailing World (1-year auto-renewal) Now

If you only have time or space for one sailing magazine, this would be it! From the professional to the enthusiastic beginner, Sailing World is a must for the sailing afficianado. Where else can you find a balanced, well-written magazine that not only covers collegiate sailing, new products, America's Cup, international sailing, new boats, expert techniques, and intelligent editorials. I have found that other sailing publications try to be "too much" and they lose their focus in either large and countless advertisements to pay for their large format, or juxtapose a beginner's article against a highly technical article for experts, leaving the reader confused. This is the only sailing magazine I subscribe to and will continue to. You must have this magazine!

Sailing World Magazine keeps you in touch with the pulse of sailing. It covers all the racing, from collegiate to the Americas Cup. Features articles every month on the latest in the racing rules, major events, how to make your boat go as fast as possible and new noteworthy boats. If you are passionate about sailing, you'll LOVE this magazine.

Ifr - Instrument Flight Rating

Ifr - Instrument Flight RatingIFR is one of several Belvoir aviation publications (Aviation Consumer, IFR pilot, light plane maintenance...) and retains their fine blend of humor and practicality. The assumption is the reader either has an IFR rating or is well-on her way.

Each issue has a general theme, often related to the season. For example, a recent issue explored zero-zero (no visibility, ceiling) takeoffs, as would be observed if a field were socked in with a 50' thick layer at ground-level. It's perfectly legal for part 91 (general aviation) flying, but often neglected as an option. Included in the article are legal considerations and ways of mitigating risk.

The monthly columns are also fun. Two of my favorites:

IFR quiz -related to the primary topic of that issue, the quiz involves a combination of interpreting ATC regulations, navigation, chart symbiology and the realities of IFR flying. These are invaluable because you learn about the *intent* behind the presentation.

On the Air -the aviator's equivalent of bloopers.

Great pulp. Get a better price by joining AOPA. $24 for 12 issues.

This monthly magazine has many real world tips and articles on flying IFR safely written by people who fly and know the systems, procedures and methods. I have been a sbiscriber for years and as long as I'm flying, I'll keep reading IFR.

This magazine is ford those who have (or are close to getting ) their instrument rating. It features very practical discussions about how to operate in the system. It is easy to find books that explain the rules or AIM but this goes behind the scenes to explain how controllers look at situations and how they can (and sometimes can not) help. The editor is Paul Berge an ex controller and CFII who has a dry wit and is fairly quick to be critical or complimentary to ATC and the FAA as appropriate. He does a great job of explaining how "the other side" thinks and how to get the most out of the system.
