Aviation Safety, another fine monthly from Belvoir publications, focuses on a variety of safe piloting topics. Where NTSB Reporter dwells on meticulous post mortems, A.S. may cover an accident then spend a lot of text suggesting how you could develop the appropriate technique beyond the theory you learned from your CFI.

For example, most aviators are familiar with the "demonstrated crosswind component" in the pilot operating handbook. It's not a limiting factor, just what the plane was tested against. Aviation Safety might have an article explaining how to develop your piloting technique so if you were faced with a stronger crosswind, you could operate in a less forgiving zone of performance. (After practice, I employed this during a 30 knot crosswind at Billings, MT)

Like IFR, it's refreshing (pun intended) because they'll call a stupid procedure a stupid procedure. You won't find pretty pictures of airplanes, but you will learn a lot.

I am developing a collection on aviation safety materials that would be suitable for inclusion in a special aviation collection of a university library, and Aviation Safety magazine is the first serial that I would recommend. The articles are topical and readable, there is excellent representation from instructors and safety professionals and the subscription is affordable. Aviation Safety does a great job of expanding upon special emphasis areas from the Practical Test Standards and also admirably addresses emerging philosophies such as Safety Management Systems.

I subscribe to the magazine, only one of a few that I do. As an added feature the subscripton includes full access to the website.

Mailbox - Grades 2-3 Edition

Just like the other reviewer mentioned, the Mailbox magazine is a good source for the occasional great classroom idea. However, they were warning me it was time to renew right after I got my first issue with almost the whole year left in my subscription. The renewal request flurry escalated to phone calls every week that continued up until I finally demanded they stop calling me. Given that my school may ask me to go up or down in grade-level classroom instruction for next year, how would I know to which magazine I should subscribe that far in advance anyway?

If you don't mind all the renewal notices and calls, it's a good source of ideas, especially when you need something in a hurry.

I love this magazine for teachers by teachers. The pictures and instruction ideas for current monthly topics are wonderful. I couldn't live without it. In our school we share, save and steal this magazine from each other. The best part of the magazine is it is teacher friendly with minimal planning so that teachers can use the ideas easily. Mailbox prepares worksheets and easy instructions for tons of projects. I don't think there's anything like it out there. If you teach children, they'll love you for subscribing. I've had this magazine for the past year and have used several of the tips, activities, posters, etc. However, I have also gotten endless emails from Mailbox promoting products and asking me to renew way in advance. This continues though I asked them to stop. For the last three or four weeks, they've been calling me on the telephone every day. This continues though I asked them to stop. The few good ideas in each $6 issue are nowhere near worth the trouble of dealing with this harassment.

I was going to buy this as a gift, but after reading the reviews I have decided it's not worth the spam and daily phone calls. However, I searched around some more and found out that Amazon sells this for the exact same price as retail (even though they claim you are saving money off some higher price). So, if you want to avoid the harassment but pay the same price, buy it directly from the distributor but use a fake phone number and a throw-away email address. That's what I may do.

True Crime

True Crime is the non-fiction crime magazine for stories that pull readers into a world of victims and criminals. The stories are not for the faint-hearted these are true crime stories featuring some of the worst crimes and criminals in history, mainly centered in the US and UK, but also covering other countries in Europe, such as France and Germany. Some of these stories are penned by renowned true crime authors and each featured story is accompanied by actual photographs of the crime scene, the victim/s, the accused etc.

For those who love true crime, this and other true crime magazines are definitely recommended. The only problem I have faced since moving to the States is the difficulty in obtaining these magazines in bookstores [and the subscription price isn't exactly cheap either!]. But the magazine definitely makes for riveting reading!

My mother is a great fan of true crime stories, I remember her reading the American version of this magazine when I was growing up so was quite happy to find this available for her. Because of her health problems mother does not get out much anymore and spends her time reading and watching TV. She especially likes collections of short true crime reports, as exemplified by this magazine. This publication is expensive ($100 for 2 years) but a real treat for her.

This is a literary magazine, and as you would expect it deals with the current events of the literary world with reviews of current books, articles on upcoming authors, etc. However it also adds features on classics (articles on classic authors, investigations into themes which span the ages, etc.) which give it a good amount of historical perspective.

Its opinions and reviews are so much more valuable because they are usually quite level-headed, and avoid the "flavor of the month" syndrome of other magazines which are just fronts for editors' publicity outfits.

4,5 stars would have been a more fitting rating, but since the option is not available, I'll round it upwards to five.

High Performance Pontiac

I give this as a gift to my Dad every year and it is his favorite magazine. He has a 65 GTO and there are always good articles on how to get the most out of his vehicle, whether that means simple repairs or new ways to increase the performance. There is also a marketplace section with lots of hard to find parts and accessories that has been very useful when you can't find a part online. Also, Amazon has the best price on this magazine that I was able to find.

I ordered this for my hard to buy for husband for Christmas and he loves it! He pours over each new issue like it is Christmas every time he gets one. He is currently rebuilding a 69 GTO so loves looking at all the tips and pictures! Would recommend it to any car enthusiast.
