Railpace Magazine

Railpace MagazineNot only do I really like Railpace but my wife reads every issue as soon as it arrives. I literally have to try and race home quickly to get it out of the mailbox first if I don't want to be behind her on the reading, and she's not a train-nut. We both enjoy the information of local interest (we live in PA) but we've also found the photography and information about the Boston area and others that we don't travel to to be outstanding and informative. Each issue is packed with tons and tons of great photography, outstanding news items, as well as information about upcoming train shows or special passenger trains.

I was getting Trains magazine for a while, but it is too much geared to the industry of trains, like if you happen to own a railroad or worked for one. I don't, I'm just a guy who likes to ride a few trains a year and maybe go watch one pass by at the local crossing and now I can stay on top of all of the things going on in my area. But even if you're more involved and actually track trains, this magazine is for you, too.

A few times there has even been coverage of the same story in both Trains and Railpace. For example, the Baldwins that run in NJ. The Trains article was brief, but the Railpace coverage had 5-times the photos and way more text about the operation, not to mention maps and other unique information.

Railpace is outstanding in its historical coverage as well. There are often articles on a branch line or a junction and Railpace prints rare photos showing how things were configured years ago and contrasting that to today's operations. It is great to learn the history this way.

An overall outstanding magazine if you live anywhere in the North East US and have any interest in trains at all.

If you are into railroading on the East Coast of the USA it is tough to beat this magazine. Picture heavy with great maps and news articles/info that you won't find in any other rairoading magazine. Photos and news covers roughly from Virginia to New England, Eastern Canada and Ohio. Highly reccomended!

Modern Railways

Modern RailwaysFollowing Mr. Henry Posner's recommendation about this magazine (and a sample copy ordered from Ian Allen), I decided to spend the big bucks to purchase a subscription and have not been disappointed. Of course, you'll have to brush up on your British geography to understand where they are (plus the problem of them using real English instead of whatever we speak over here). This magazine does a wonderful job of demonstrating what the English expect of their passenger and freight trains with its highly illustrated articles and many news events. I would highly recommend this magazine for anyone interested in the world of railways outside North America.

MAD Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

MAD MagazineThe magazine is hyper liberal which I am but honestly I keep politics and humor in two different parts of my brain. I still love it though. My only grip is they ship in no protection other than a light paper cover so the magazine usually looks awful after going through the mail system. For the cost they charge they should at least be in a plastic bag like every other magazine.

I started reading this magazine in the early 90's, when I was a kid. My dad had a few from the 60's and 70's, and I have expanded my collection since then to include a good amount from the 80's. That stuff was brilliant.

Artists and writers die, we know that. New artists and writers can be good, but the MAD magazine of the 2000's isn't worth buying. Why did MAD start putting in ads? Wasn't it making enough money by itself? I loved MAD for the fact that it was ad-free, and the brilliant writing and artwork, laced with biting satire. Now, the humor in there is more of the "potty humor" level, and is the kind of thing juveniles laugh over.

Now it's not worth the paper it's printed on, and CRACKED magazine has gone the same way and already ended publication several years ago. Last time I read a MAD magazine, I found myself completely bored and impatient with it, and wondering how such a great magazine could have become so lackluster.

New England Home (1-year auto-renewal)

New England HomeNew England has a high-caliber magazine that showcases fine architecture and design. Geared to the affluent homeowner, each issue of NEW ENGLAND HOME features page after page of beautifully photographed homes and the stories of their creators. Whether you live in the home of your dreams or aspire to, NEW ENGLAND HOME is a welcome and long overdue magazine devoted exclusively to New England.

A wonderful resource for anyone interested in creating a beautiful home.

Not only the articles and many pictures, but also the ads, provide a wealth of information over a broad range of subjects and tastes. A must have if you are thinking of building in the New England region.

Not expensive. Not much I'm interested in. Very expensive homes shown in this magazine. Would prefer New England homes of age. Antique, historical homes. Cottage and beach houses that look lived in. Too many ads.

I was very disappointed with this magazine. It has more advertisements than articles. Each issue has full page ads and maybe a very articles. Not worth the money. They should pay you for it.

This magazine is inspirational. It is targeted for homeowners in the New England area as most of the advertisements inside are from either national companies or businesses that operate and specialize in the New England area. I live in Southern California but I love the look of New England style homes. This magazine provides in depth articles about designs from the very classic to the very modern, from new builds to remodels, from interior to exterior design. And I just love gazing at and admiring all the stunning photography. It gives me so many ideas on how I can make my home look and feel more like the majestic homes on the east coast.

I subscribed when Amazon offered the one-year subscription for $5. How can you beat that?

Home Theater

Home TheaterThere are so few magazine publishers these days. This used to be a great magazine, but like so many other little magazines, it has been sucked up by a larger publishing house and the overall quality has suffered ever since.

It is interesting to read about the absolute best products that are out there, but it would also be cool and helpful to review all classes, from low to mid to high end. The truth about electronics is that you can get a huge improvement in quality by spending more, but once you reach a certain level of quality you have to shell out even more money for just small increments of quality. So why focus on the upper mid range and high end only?

Home Theater is my hobby and HTM was an excellent place to learn about the subject. They had engineers doing real tests and comparisons that had integrity. A few years ago the mag was sold to a large publisher who fired all the good people and brought in writers that should be working for Home and Garden Magazine.

The reviews we could once count on are now paid for by the advertisers so you can no longer draw any conclusions from them.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of my favorite publication.

I have been a subscriber for about 5 years now. I love the equipment reviews! One reviewer complained that they only review expensive stuff but I dont agree with that at all. I have seen plenty of reviews for equipment that is priced for the average joe. Keep in mind though that home theater equipment isnt dirt cheep. Since when have tv's been cheap? Since when have good speakers been cheap? The magazine is about what equipment is going to be worth your money and provide a good experience not, "I got these bad boys for $50!" Anyways, another section I like in the mag is that they have articles and pictures of cool home theaters. Real theaters in peoples homes, not demo rooms in stores. As far as people having a bad experience with receiving the mag after they first order, maybe getting it here isnt the best way to order it. I dont know. I ordered my subscription straight from home theater mag (for the same price) or you can send in the typical paper square that comes in the mag. All I know is this, I will subscribe to this mag for years to come.

This is one of the best Magazines ever, Or at least that's how Home Theater Magazine (HTM) would review itself.

HTM is a great magazine; they have an awesome editor, and great editorial columns. They have an excellent section listing all of the new HD video and audio products being released. HTM always does a great job of keeping you up to date with new technologies and FCC regs without making you read several pages of technical information. Additionally, HTM reviews both high-end equipment and low-end stuff most of us will actually buy. I've seen reviews on $30 mp3 players, and reviews on $15,000 amplifiers. The magazine is colorful, well laid out, easy to read, and is completely spotless of any offensive material.

Where does HTM fail? I have yet to see something reviewed below 83%. And it isn't unlikely that everything reviewed in any given issue will be 90% and higher. I suppose HTM doesn't want to loose demo equipment by shelling out bad reviews. But honestly, it's hard to tell when MAG is serious about a product.

At any rate, HTM is a great home theater mag. After all, it has a low subscription cost and in the end it is enjoyable to read. I give it 4 stars I can't be too critical on people just because they are too positive.

Always a good Magazine...wish they would try more brands of TV's in their reviews....and maybe less on the audio side of things. But that is just my 2 cents.

Midwest Outdoors

Midwest OutdoorsMidwest Outdoors is an excellent magaizine for the outdoorsman. The articles are written by people that actually fish, hunt in these locations. I personally have fished in a couple of the location and remembered the techniques they used, tried them and they produced fish equal too or even bigger than what was in the article. This magazine is also centered around the areas that i live and fish in so that makes it realistic for me that i do and can go to these areas, where as with some magazines there is no way i will ever go there or let alone have a chance to hunt or fish. All in all this is a quality magazine with quality writers that can get there point or story across in a manner that the common person can understand

Life & Style Weekly

Life & Style WeeklyIf you are already familiar with gossip magazines such as People, US Weekly, In Touch, etc., you may have seen this or even picked up a copy of it at the newsstand. And, while this magazine focuses a little bit more on clothing choices and lifestyles of celebrities, it still has the makings of a gossip magazines. These include up-to-minute news on who's pregnant, married, going out, etc., along with movie, TV, and celebrity news, plus the occasional important news story, although that is really rare.

I personally like Life & Style for its fashion coverage; they do a great job of detailing celebrity looks and how you can get them for less. As for the actual gossip, well, it's nothing really new, and usually can be found on the covers of all of the competing magazines which do a more thorough job of detailing them. As an overall conclusion, if you like reading about celebrity style, homes, etc., along with some good gossip and news, then by all means go ahead and read this magazine. If you're more into some thorough and up-to-minute gossip, try reading something else.

I agree with the other reviewers, the magazine never arrives on time. It took 3 months to finally get started and now I go 3-4 weeks before a few finally trickle in. I never get them all. My address label is always placed on top of someone else's address label. I have called customer service (800-228-4957) many times and nothing has ever been resolved. I subscribe to other weekly magazines and do not have this problem with them. I will never subscribe to Life & Style again.

Decent magazine as far as content for fashion and gossip, but I also agree with another reader with the fact that you don't know when/if you'll get one. I won't get one for two weeks, then I'll get three at once. Then nothing for two weeks, then one will come. Very sporadic. I emailed my complaint and will see how/if it gets resolved. I've never had any other issue with weekly magazines.

I personally don't read this magazine (unless it's in arms reach and I'm extremely bored), however, as a gift it's great. My wife loves this stuff.

I have two small problems with this product, both aren't the publisher's fault. First, make sure to change the name to HER name, not yours. Secondly, I thought this would curb her impulse gossip mag purchasing... not even close. That will never stop.

I am disappointed that the magazine comes so late by mail almost one week from the time you can buy it in the supermarket.

High Performance Pontiac

High Performance PontiacI give this as a gift to my Dad every year and it is his favorite magazine. He has a 65 GTO and there are always good articles on how to get the most out of his vehicle, whether that means simple repairs or new ways to increase the performance. There is also a marketplace section with lots of hard to find parts and accessories that has been very useful when you can't find a part online. Also, Amazon has the best price on this magazine that I was able to find.

I ordered this for my hard to buy for husband for Christmas and he loves it! He pours over each new issue like it is Christmas every time he gets one. He is currently rebuilding a 69 GTO so loves looking at all the tips and pictures! Would recommend it to any car enthusiast.
