I work in the publishing industry and am always skeptical about bias towards advertisers in any publication. Horse Journal has completely removed that from the equation and offers wonderful, unbiased information that is helpful for any level of horse owner. I read it cover to cover each month. They give wonderful and explanatory product reviews and great articles about basic horse care from bedding to veterinary care. If you only receive 1 horse publication, this should be it!

I have been subscribing to The Horse Journal for over 4 years and have found the articles to be very informative. This magazine has no advertising and has something for every horseperson. You'll read the latest finding on a particular health issue, questions and answers to and from the vet, and a consumer report on a particular product. I save my issues as I have had to refer back to them when an issue arises at the barn. We had one horse suffering from severe rainrot. I was able to pull the past issue that dealt with this problem and show the owner. This magazine follows much of the AAEP findings you won't be sorry you subscribed.

I like this Journal. It's informative and packed full of tried and true products. It's an equine consumer reports and I trust their reviews. In order to cut back on expenses I let all my equine magazines expire except my Horse Journal.

This is the type ogf magazine that along with Mojo make all others pale in comparison.

Record Collector gives such brilliant reviews of albums,run downs on the entire output sand releases of bands.

It truly gets you excited about music and wanting if not lusting to hear so many of the albums that they review.

They look at all musical styles and thi slack of bias should be a great hook for all music lovers.

The articles which are the main ones concentrate solely on one act,and will if necessary take it through four or five issues to give an accurate account of the band's history,musical output,members,what they are doing now,how they formed etc etc.

This is a truly indispensable magazine.

I have no complaints but for the fact i cannot afford to buy it,and find it hard to track down in the U.S.A.

Also if you begin collecting your house will be overun quickly as throwing out one of these magazines feel slike tearing out a piece of your soul.

I have been receiving this magazine for over 5 years. Every issue is wonderful. It focuses on Goddess based spirituality on all levels...articles are based on a theme per issue and seasonally appropriate. Varied perspectives keep this magazine fresh and always interesting. Articles/stories are brief and easy to read, but can cause pause to make you think. I have shared issues with my Aunt, step-daughter, and even started discussions with my teen boys and 6 year old daughter based on articles written. I thank my Husband for every issue when it arrives (he got tired of going to the bookstore to purchase:).

California Explorer

Unless you are an expert in Cal backpacking I do not suggest buying this bland, thin, memo like paper.

I gave this as a gift to my daughter-in-law upon moving to California. She found the places described to visit as too remote, wild and was not sure worth the effort to explore. It would be a great resource for an adventurous person.

I bought this for my husband as part of his Christmas present. I expected to receive a magazine. Instead it was a 16 page leaflet with holes punched in it ready to go in a file. Four of the pages are just links and information about other books and guides to buy which are about California. The paper is not nice quality and the whole thing is just black and white.

Hawaii Magazine

We go to Hawaii annually and this magazine helps us stay in touch with island happenings, situations, cultural events on the mainland, recipes and all things Hawaiian. It helps ease the homesickness of being away from our 2nd "home". They even have an annual photo contest to enter for the photography buff. (Would I be shamefully plugging that I won the Cultural category in the issue featured to lure you to this review? [Bringing the Islands Home]) ;-)

For Hawaii fanatics, this mags for you...hands down!

"Hawaii" is a magazine devoted to covering all aspects of Hawaii, and as such is oriented less toward tourists and more toward residents than many other publications. The magazine covers current events in Hawaii, environmental issues on the islands, and features many cultural and heritage-oriented articles that many tourists will find of only passing interest.

Every issue has a useful events calendar for all the islands individually ("Kauai Happenings," etc.) The editors are very good to cover all the islands equitably, with as much emphasis on Kauai as Oahu, for instance. Despite the seeming focus on residents, there are many articles of interest to visitors, and numerous advertisements of great use to tourists as well.

I enjoy visiting Hawaii and find the magazine to be worthwhile, and actually enjoy the fact that it isn't focused exclusively on the tourist; the things I learn from "Hawaii" magazine help me to more fully appreciate the beauty and nuance of all the islands. I recommend "Hawaii" to anyone interested in knowing more about America's most tropical state.

Of the two existing reviews here currently, you couldn't get much different responses. Ironically, I'm right in the middle. I'm not Kama'aina (native) to Hawaii, but Hawaii is my passion; I live, breath, and sleep it. Hawaii is a place to be respected and loved. So how does Hawaii magazine handle that task?

Well, I guess it depends on what you're looking for. If you want the more tourist sided flavor to Hawaii, then the magazine probably will be what you enjoy. If you're looking for more native and eco-tourism based stuff, don't expect as much. Occasionally they'll put in pieces that aren't half bad on this topic, but it could be better. There recent anniversary editions were pretty good, but overall it still seems more like one big advertisement for tourists. Of course, that's where the money is, but you'd think a magazine called

Hawaii Magazine is a very good publication for those who have an interest in America's fiftieth state. This magazine brings the world of the Hawaiian Islands to your home every month, with facts, figures, and photos taken from this island chain paradise.

One thing about Hawaii Magazine that is different from what you might expect is that it covers more than just travel. When I read this publication for the first time, I was surprised at the contents within. I always assumed this was a magazine solely about travel and tourism. While travel, resorts, and related topics are an important part of this magazine, they are not the only part. The rest of Hawaii Magazine deals with cultural and native topics. It lets you discover the people who inhabit these islands. You get to learn about Hawaiian customs, holidays, art, dress, and culture.

With the emphasis on culture, Hawaii Magazine is a learning experience. The people responsible for the publication of this magazine want readers to come away with a better understanding of what it means to be Hawaiian and to live in this island chain. They want you to think of Hawaii as more than just a nice, warm, sunny place to visit. They want you to learn about the people that inhabit Hawaii: How they dress, how they celebrate events, how they interact with others, etc.

If I had to name a few cons to this magazine, they would have to be the publications short length (less than 100 pages per issue) and its infrequent publication (every two months). Other than these negative aspects, most everything else about this magazine makes it worthwhile to read. It's an educational lesson on the people and the lifestyle of those we call Hawaiian.

Vanity Fair July 2007 Africa Issue, Bono/Queen Rania Cover

Bono is doing a great job bringing Africa into the spotlight. This is one of his latest attempts to draw more attention to the neediest continent on the planet. All in all it was a well done issue. As for this particular cover, I got it mainly in hopes of getting his autograph someday :)

Life & Style Weekly

If you are already familiar with gossip magazines such as People, US Weekly, In Touch, etc., you may have seen this or even picked up a copy of it at the newsstand. And, while this magazine focuses a little bit more on clothing choices and lifestyles of celebrities, it still has the makings of a gossip magazines. These include up-to-minute news on who's pregnant, married, going out, etc., along with movie, TV, and celebrity news, plus the occasional important news story, although that is really rare.

I personally like Life & Style for its fashion coverage; they do a great job of detailing celebrity looks and how you can get them for less. As for the actual gossip, well, it's nothing really new, and usually can be found on the covers of all of the competing magazines which do a more thorough job of detailing them. As an overall conclusion, if you like reading about celebrity style, homes, etc., along with some good gossip and news, then by all means go ahead and read this magazine. If you're more into some thorough and up-to-minute gossip, try reading something else.

I agree with the other reviewers, the magazine never arrives on time. It took 3 months to finally get started and now I go 3-4 weeks before a few finally trickle in. I never get them all. My address label is always placed on top of someone else's address label. I have called customer service (800-228-4957) many times and nothing has ever been resolved. I subscribe to other weekly magazines and do not have this problem with them. I will never subscribe to Life & Style again.

Decent magazine as far as content for fashion and gossip, but I also agree with another reader with the fact that you don't know when/if you'll get one. I won't get one for two weeks, then I'll get three at once. Then nothing for two weeks, then one will come. Very sporadic. I emailed my complaint and will see how/if it gets resolved. I've never had any other issue with weekly magazines.

I personally don't read this magazine (unless it's in arms reach and I'm extremely bored), however, as a gift it's great. My wife loves this stuff.

I have two small problems with this product, both aren't the publisher's fault. First, make sure to change the name to HER name, not yours. Secondly, I thought this would curb her impulse gossip mag purchasing... not even close. That will never stop.

I subscribed to this magazine for a few years when I was more active in R/C flying. It is packed with information and just a great magazine to read. The information and articles are also very useful and relevant for those of us not actively flying R/C Jets. Of all the R/C magazines, this one is my favorite...

I subscribed to this magazine because it is interesting and I would like to learn more about jet R/C aircraft. However, they always have the same aircraft in their articles. All you see is fighters and this type aircraft. I have never seen one article about commerical airliners or military transports in their magazine. I am surprised there is not ONE US manufacturer of airliners. On You Tube and other web sights people say they want to know where to purchase these airliners. Hong Kong, Australian, and other overseas companies are making these and must be doing a great business and these airliners are not cheap. They run about $ 2500 each. I wrote the publisher and he said there was a lot of interest in this subject and maybe in the future they would write about it. To date nada!!!! Think I will try it one more year but if nothing appears the magazine will be toast.

Art in America

I have been reading Art in America for the past two years. I intend to subscribe to it forever because it is excellent in its review of gallery and museum exhibitions as well as new books on art. Interviews with "art people"--such as collectors, curators, and artists--are entertaining and generally well written. My only complaint is that it is shoddily copy edited (if copy edited at all); I often find terms misused and/or misspelled. The pictures are glorious.

Art in America is an essential guide to art happening anywhere, not just in America; it is scholarly, prosaic and comrehensive. Even if you skip the sometimes overly-serious, jargon-heavy writing, as an image base source it is indispensable, especially if you don't live in New York. I save every issue.

So many magazines are falling out of print due to lack of readers and increasing ease to read online. Some publications go from my first read to the recycling bin, but not so with ART IN AMERICA. Articles are rather interesting, the pictures are glorious, and I have yet to dispose of a copy. It's a pleasure to read about art, artists, critics, galleries and collectors, all in a concise format. I will admit that I do not read each article, but I scan each issue and find myself returning to a particular article I may have skipped after a memory is triggered. I also enjoy the feel of the paper because it is not so heavy as to weigh down the magazine, but it holds up well to page turning and storage. I recommend this magazine to lovers of art who want to increase their visual literacy.

I received a request to re-subscribe before I had received the first issue! The first issue does give a great survey of contemporary sculpture. Unlike other publications, it is taking me a while to get through the issue--lots to read and view. If each issue is like this, I will likely re-subscribe when it is time to do that.

I am not an artist but I do a fair amount of collecting and viewing of the arts. This is a nice twist from the everyday magazines and gives a first hand view into great artists, collections, news, and historical relevance of all forms of global art.

It does have in-depth articles that can get a little professor-ish BUT the splendid pictures are delish!
