Fur Fish & Game - for Schools & Libraries

Fur Fish & Game - for Schools & LibrariesMost people think that this magazine limits itself to the wild fur trapping industry but they are wrong. Although a good portion of the stories and departments focus on trapping, the excellent fishing, hunting and shooting articles should NOT be overlooked. I find this magazine to be much more appropriate for the average American and Canadian outdoors person. Several do-it-yourself features and inexpensive alternatives give this magazine a realistic touch. Most other magazines seem to cater to whoever advertises on their pages but FFG seems to care about the readers success. If I had to choose only one outdoor sporting magazine this would be it!

This is NOT just a trapping magazine. It has articles of interest to anyone interested in woodsmanship. I started reading FFG back in the 60's as a farm boy. Many a stormy winter's day was spend with my nose buried in a FFG magazine, learning things that I could apply as soon as I got back outdoors. Aimed more toward the rural, blue collar, and real woodsman segment of outdoor magazine readers. Very practical, useful stuff that won't cost you an arm and a leg to implement, and won't take a Ph.D to understand. I love this magazine.

Buy Fur Fish & Game - for Schools & Libraries Now

Fur Fish and Game is one of my favorite outdoor magazines. Between the helpful hints, articles on game you can actually hunt, and their very readable articles, it's a bargain.

The magazine reminds me of a simpler time both in my life and in America. It's a piece of Americana, and I'm amazed the magazine has remained true to it roots over the years. Even though my life has gotten much busier over the years, this is one magazine I look forward to reading.

International Travel News

International Travel NewsThis is a great magazine. I recently began subscribing and got a bunch of back issues to read. It is by readers and for readers. Nothing amateurish about it, though. Lots of good information for all aspects of international travel (in this case, "international" means outside North America and the Carribean). Definitely worth trying.

This magazine is all about first hand international travel. There are travel advisories, packing tips for different countries, problems found along the way (with information to solve these problems if you run across them), and NO ADVERTISING! So you don't have to wade through page after page of ads. And there is no risk of an entire issue devoted to travel in the US. I'm letting other travel subscriptions lapse, and keeping this one active.

It is black print on newspaper, in a standard magazine size.

Kiplinger's Retirement Report

Kiplinger's Retirement ReportI first looked at the sample report online. It was great -lots of useful information to prepare for retirement, including some very good investment ideas. So I subscribed, and have now received several issues. There are sometimes some good information, but for the most part it is worthless. For example, in the January 2011 isue, 4 out of 20 pages was dedicated to turbulent times for long term care insurance that read more like a news article than true advice for what I should do. Another 4 pages were full page ads for banks, investment products, etc. The rest is what I would call useless fluff. By the way, Kiplinger, I am paying for this report -why so many ads? Anyhow, There is usually some semi-useful info in the report, but definitely not worth the cost.

This is one of the best retirement compilations I have come across. Many good ideas. Just one, idea for part time work including email address for call center work. So many retirement magazines focus only on how to save for retirement, not on lifestyle based on the amount of money you really do have at t the end. Highly recommend

I've always been pleased with the depth and coverage of Kiplinger magazine and reports. However, this time I'm a little disappointed.

The Retirement Report costs significantly more than the magazine but didn't seem to give me an appropriate value. True, is that I've only reviewed one issue and they may have had the summer doldrums, so before you put your money down look for an issue you can study to see if it covers what you want it to... unfortunately I didn't take my own advice... shame on me.

This is a very useful publication for those near or at retirement. The information is up to date, helpfull and informative.

Want Kiplinger's Retirement Report Discount?

I subscribed to Kiplinger's Retirement Report several years ago, but decided to give it a try again. The magazine, if that's what you call a 20 page publication with 4 pages devoted to one page ads, is written for individuals who are in or near "the end of life" stage. The articles deal with conserving the money you have, provide interest rates that aren't even close to the highest insured rates available. They never give ideas for travel or things to do outside of your home or with grandchildren. The best and only section I ever got any thing from was the questions asked by readers section and that is kept to one page. I guess the Editors feel there is no point in expanding the one good section this brochure does have. I would recommend you save your money and Not subscribe to this publication. I suggest, instead, you subscribe to a real magazine with information you can use every month Kiplinger's Personal Finance a much superior publication for half the price.

Soccer Three Sixty Magazine

Soccer Three Sixty MagazineOkay, it's missing that one star to make it five stars simply because it's not "up to date" as the other review mentioned. But I don't think it's supposed to inform you of every weeks' games it is a bi-monthly magazine, so that's what you should expect. It still offers in depth articles on individual players, teams, coaches, etc. My husband would rather read about soccer game results online, yet this subscription made the best gift ever for my nephew who is just now becoming a soccer fan he knows more than my husband about the lives and current decisions of some soccer players. That's simply what this mag is all about the explanations and analysis of coach/player decisions, moves, mistakes and wins. All said, it's not bad...

Unable to evaluate at this time--have not received the magazine yet.... was informed there would be a several month delay and they will start sending magazine in February 2013.... very disappointing as this was a gift item we expected to receive on a more timely basis.

Catholic Digest

Catholic DigestGranted, it is called 'Catholic Digest' but it lacks in the way too many Catholic publications lack: it doesn't get often enough into what it means to live out a Catholic faith in an everyday world.

It is very well-written, and has a sharp "Guideposts" or "Reader's Digest" feel about the look and tone.

Some articles in Catholic Digest can be poignant, but I want my faith challenged. I don't expect the depth of First Things, but I want to know how I can serve Christ Monday-Friday. Explain to me the Liturgy -why are various aspects of it important? What about what the Bible says about alcohol, or daily prayer? How about defining Mary's official role, dispelling the mistaken belief than she is equal to Christ (the question of veneration versus worship)?

The Protestant magazines are loaded with accounts about how God changed their lives. I'd like to see more of that. The Protestants have lots of Bible studies and that sort of thing in their magazines. Do I have to buy a Protestant magazine to learn how to be a better Christian? They're fine, but it seems with the long history of great theologians, someone could get a Catholic variation on all of that.

I think Catholic Digest is the best publication offered for Catholics. But I'd like more meat.

Videomaker Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Videomaker MagazineIt is hard to distinguish one issue of this magazine from the next. Too much repitition with respect to technique and equipment. Not enough equipment reviews or other aspects of video (i.e., festivals, etc.). The articles on technique are almost clones of each other from issue to issue. Also, too many advertisements.

I'm a professional writer and video producer. I subscribed to this magazine via Amazon thinking it would provide a useful teaching tool for the flock of interns I employ every semester. Alas, not so: the magazine is less than useless, it's actually detrimental to the inexperience and maddening to me. Why? Because the writing is very sloppy; it appears the editor/publisher never actually reads what he publishes. The articles are incoherently written, full of typos and, on those rare occasions when the writer is actually communicating, frequently factually wrong. I've written the editor/publisher several times asking him to make corrections of fact, but he never does. Finally, I wrote asking that he cancel my subscription and refund the balance of my money -but no reply there, either. Indeed, it looks to me like the editor/publisher writes his own Letters to the Editor section, as the letters are always flattering -and completely content-free. It's too bad this magazine has existed for 25 years, thus likely discouraging anyone else from taking a stab at publishing for the beginning consumer video market. There is definitely a need for good writing published on a regular basis for that audience -but Videomaker is not that publication.

I am a computer videomaker myself, and if there is one invaluable resource avalible on the comsumer market, it's COMPUTER VIDEOMAKER. It reviews hardware, software, cameras, computers, and even gives you tips on how to make your videos look more professional. The articles are concise, accurate, and well written, so you don't have to search to find the information you are looking for. This magazine has made me a well informed videographer, and there is no doubt that it has helped, and will help how I plan, execute, and enjoy this incredibly rewarding hobby.

Future Music

Future MusicThe earlier reviewer commenting on the price is referring to the US edition of the magazine, which is about $20 per year, and is no where near as well put together. This is a great magazine, I had the subscription for it and bought it in pounds and got the bill once it had been converted to dollars, needless to say I only did it for one year. It's still less than buying it at the newsstand which is around $16 per issue I think. If you like to get new audio samples, tutorials, plugins and virtual instruments every month, this is "the" magazine to get, if you like that stuff but don't want to pay the charge for having it sent over the pond, consider the US version, but realize they are not the same and the US one is not nearly as good.

This magazine is invaluable for the present-day producer.

I produce hip hop tracks and find that this particular magazine is tailored perfectly to the producer who works much with virtual instruments, plug-ins and the like.

Each month's issue also comes with a bonus CD that includes plug-in demos (often free fully-functional plugins), tutorial videos, sound samples, etc. This, for me, puts "Future Music" in a different league than other magazines.

Mags like Mix and EQ are great covering a wider scope of music and music-for-film production, but for the producer working with a Digital Audio Workstation, "Future Music" is probably the best "get right down to business" audio magazine available.

Highly Recommended.

Fourfourtwo

FourfourtwoFour Four Two is a great magazine. It has great stories by some of the best football writers and is also often very funny. I have learned a great deal about the game reading it. Unfortunately, I still have not received an issue through my Amazon order. Completely ridiculous. I placed the order more than two months ago and still no magazine. Amazon works with an outside company to fill magazine orders and they are horrible. I tried to contact the outside company on at least 3 occasions and did not even receive the courtesy of a response to my e-mail. Amazon promised to look in to the matter 8 days ago but still no word from Amazon. This is a great magazine but if you can buy it at a news stand or a brick and mortar book store buy it there. The Amazon price is not much of a bargain over what I pay for it at my local Barnes and Noble anyway. I can not say enough good things about the magazine and I can not say enough bad things about my experience trying to subscribe to it through Amazon!

I lived in England until I came out to the States a few years ago. I had a subscription to this magazine then, and I depend on it even more now. For someone addicted to the REAL football in a town like Cincinnati isn't easybut this magazine is like you're back in England. It is thhe best football magazine by far, you can't really go wrong with it. It has excellent, original stories and great interviews. It's a real life-saver!

My son loves this magazine and we are always buying at the newsstand at a hefty price. So, I thought my son would enjoy a subscription for his birthday. I ordered the magazine on December 4, over a month before his birthday. However, no issue has arrived yet and his birthday is long past. It is now February 28 and still no magazine. Our order states to expected delivery by February 20. How long does it take to fulfill a magazine subscription?

UPDATE: I sent an email to the vendor on February 28 requesting a status of my order, but received no response to date. The first issue finally did arrive on March 5.

Want Fourfourtwo Discount?

I love this magazine because the articles can make you howl with laughter (and they printed my e-mail!). It is very corporate and flashy but the columns, letters, and monstrous close-up photos give it a lot of personality. The information is sometimes a bit dodgy. If the cover says a manager has professed his love for his team, by the time the magazine has hit the stands, said manager has been paid off and sent off. And in the "Boy's a bit special" section, I've been reading 442 for 9 years and a tiny handful of those players make it to the premiership.

Their best material is their surveys. Best players, richest players, richest teams, most important managers, etc. And they put together some pretty good supplements. The subscription price is worth it to stay connected to the inside track.

Life & Style Weekly

Life & Style WeeklyIf you are already familiar with gossip magazines such as People, US Weekly, In Touch, etc., you may have seen this or even picked up a copy of it at the newsstand. And, while this magazine focuses a little bit more on clothing choices and lifestyles of celebrities, it still has the makings of a gossip magazines. These include up-to-minute news on who's pregnant, married, going out, etc., along with movie, TV, and celebrity news, plus the occasional important news story, although that is really rare.

I personally like Life & Style for its fashion coverage; they do a great job of detailing celebrity looks and how you can get them for less. As for the actual gossip, well, it's nothing really new, and usually can be found on the covers of all of the competing magazines which do a more thorough job of detailing them. As an overall conclusion, if you like reading about celebrity style, homes, etc., along with some good gossip and news, then by all means go ahead and read this magazine. If you're more into some thorough and up-to-minute gossip, try reading something else.

I agree with the other reviewers, the magazine never arrives on time. It took 3 months to finally get started and now I go 3-4 weeks before a few finally trickle in. I never get them all. My address label is always placed on top of someone else's address label. I have called customer service (800-228-4957) many times and nothing has ever been resolved. I subscribe to other weekly magazines and do not have this problem with them. I will never subscribe to Life & Style again.

Buy Life & Style Weekly Now

Decent magazine as far as content for fashion and gossip, but I also agree with another reader with the fact that you don't know when/if you'll get one. I won't get one for two weeks, then I'll get three at once. Then nothing for two weeks, then one will come. Very sporadic. I emailed my complaint and will see how/if it gets resolved. I've never had any other issue with weekly magazines.

I personally don't read this magazine (unless it's in arms reach and I'm extremely bored), however, as a gift it's great. My wife loves this stuff.

I have two small problems with this product, both aren't the publisher's fault. First, make sure to change the name to HER name, not yours. Secondly, I thought this would curb her impulse gossip mag purchasing... not even close. That will never stop.

ARTnews (1-year auto-renewal)

ARTnewsAs an artist, I need to be "in the know" a bit, and ARTnews is one of the 3 magazines I subscribe to for this purpose.

I use it primarily for: # 1, the ads, which are mostly gallery ads, and let me know what is showing, and where. # 2, the exhibit reviews (N.Y., National, International), for the same reason as # 1, and the classifieds, which sometimes give a competition notice not available elsewhere.

Regular departments include: "ARTtalk", which is the lighter side of the news, and "National/International News", which has more of a business slant, obituaries, etc.

Each issue has a "theme". The November 2001 for instance, has fashion design, with 3 articles on art/fashion, and one on Mary McFadden's sculpture collection. It also has "The New Climate", about art after 9/11, from a response by several artists to the loss of a 100 million $ in art.

Also included is a large section on new art books, and the obligatory "avante garde" piece. There are too many "shock art" articles in this magazine for my taste, therefore 4 instead of 5 stars, but I guess some people still consider this a "trend".

Good quality paper, excellent color reproduction, and the wide range of art represented make this a useful magazine for both artist and collector.

ARTnews takes its hits from readers: paper is not high quality, the inks smear after a couple of readings, there is a lot of `outsider art' in the ads and a lot of competitions, schools, prizes etc most of which seem to stress entrance fees over artistic interest, and the reporting seems weighted to out of focus art shows. But there must be some reason it is still around, despite the competition. ARTnews is a quick read, lots of things happemn between its coevers, and it seems to be of more interest to working artsts than to the big gun collectors and museums. That is fine: the art world is bizarre enough in its diffuse goals (when there are some evident!), and this journal seems to satisfy the casual magazine collector. The writing by contributing editors is definitely improving and some of the critiques are very eloquent. A good bargain art periodical

In the other reviews nobody has mentioned that ARTnews has done VERY important investigative reporting and even crusading for the restitution of artworks stolen by the Nazis. They have followed other similar lines over a long period of time. I don't think any other magazine has shown such responsibility. They have been trying but have not yet succeeded in covering art of the nation or world as a whole instead of SOOOOOOO much on NYC. That may almost be too much of a challenge as the art world continues to grow and spread out, and so much of it is available online.

Arabian Horse Times

Arabian Horse TimesThe Arabian Horse Times is an all around great read providing me with show information and results, information on top breeders and trainers and information straight from indusrty insiders. The magazine is top-notch, just like the Arabian horse. A must have for Arabian enthusiasts!

Lots of greased, shaved, photoshopped horses. No articles on other disciplines. To be fair, I base this on the free issue I was sent, plus issues I have flipped through of my friends.....who agreed with my assesment. For this reason I have never subscribed to this magazine. It is the show industry who advertises though...sadly understandable.

Sure do wish they would lighten up on the xbreeds and focus on the Arabian more. This magazine is supposed to be about ARABIANS. NOT SADDLEBREDS.It seems as tho the breeders are trying to make Saddlebreds out of the Arabian, and if they don't want the Arabian then go buy a Saddlebred!!!! It is so sad we have lost the original Arabian, that nothing can replace. Who could ever want anything better? THE BEAUTIFUL ARAB IS THE BEST!!!!! THE ORIGINAL ARAB IS UNEQUALLED.

National Catholic Reporter

National Catholic ReporterNCR has been around for a long time and they have some top notch reporters. Over the past 10 years, though, they have been more and more vigorous in their misrepresentation of the facts. There's an agenda. Of course, no one is free of some bias, myself included. The problem with NCR nowadays, though, is that they are ignoring central facts in order to create a particular impression. Any given issue will have an article about the Ordination of Women as Catholic Priests but will neglect to mention that the Church has a definitive and infallible teaching on the matter and that the pope couldn't rescind it if he wanted to. The same kind of problem arises when discussing the sex abuse crisis. The statistical data is definitive that the vast majority of the cases (80%+) and almost all of the abusers (95%+) were not children but adolescents. That doesn't change the horror, but it does make it a deception to describe the crisis as pedofilia. Their treatment of bishops who do not agree with and loudly support abortion, euthanasia, contraception in Africa, environmentalism and every other cause celebre is simply not Christian and often omits central facts of the incidents and the general disdain for the authority of the Church is rampant in almost every page. Even bishops they "like" in one article are promptly slammed in another for failure to be up to date on this or that. Of course, the Pope no matter what he is saying or doing is viciously abused in almost every issue.

There was a time when NCR was as good as it got. There was a time when it was a sincerely liberal publication that welcomed all views and let the reader decide for him or herself, but that age is passed. Today, NCR is a deceiver which writes the story and chooses which facts best fit that story. I highly recommending something like the National Catholic Register or Our Sunday Visitors publications for middle of the road Catholic news from the US, Rome and around the world. Those publications will tell the story as it is and if the author has an opinion, the author will admit that he or she is biased, you can't get that kind of honesty from NCR anymore. It's sad that this once great publication has lost its way.

This is a great, educational publication. It helps me keep on top of happenings in the church at large. It motivates me to continue to help us move towards Vatican II priinciples.

Buy National Catholic Reporter Now

I expected more. As someone trained in the Jesuit's tradition, I thought there would be a bit more analysis of the ramifications of the events revealed in the stories. I know that is usually reserved for the editorial pages, but there should have been more of a love-faith-morality judgement to it. That said, it is a very good, subtle presentation of major issues.

Read Best Reviews of National Catholic Reporter Here

The National Catholic Distorter continues to subvert a hermeneutics of continuity by reinterpreting everything from the Catechism to Papal initiatives in terms of rebellion rather than submission. There is no such thing as a "liberal" Catholic. You are either faithful to the Magisterium or you are not. Increasingly blogs are exposing this dying hippie dinosaur for what it is: a wolf in Cope clothing. Don't waste your money with a subscription, or endanger your soul reading it, and let it fall into silence and be forgotten as the obscure Gnostic heresy that inspired its founding. It shall be sucked into a Vortex.

Want National Catholic Reporter Discount?

The only thing this is good for is to see what old and dying liberals in the Church are complaining about. This will not increase your Faith or your love for God. It only has bad things to say about the Pope, Magisterial teaching, and T/traditions of the Faith. The National Catholic Register is an infinitely better choice for faithful Catholics.

Finescale Modeler

Finescale ModelerThis magazine is well written. Currently, Matt Usher is the editor and he is slowly making the magazine more like some of the British Magazines. That's a good thing because if things don't change then they become obsolete.

FSM is easy to use and every month follows a standard format. There is the magazine index of articles; a break down section of what's new and that is divided up by scale, type of vehicle or model, and books/supplies usually a featured article or build of a model; several conversion articles or how-to articles; and then important work bench reviews.

FSM is very influential on the industry. Every year they offer a poll on the most requested models. Since 2000 nearly every requested 1/350th large scale ship has been made. Also, FSM will pull no punches on the work bench reviews. Lindberg made a ghastly 1/72 scale Japanese submarine with a miss-formed bow. FSM slammed Lindberg on that and challenged the firm on where they did their research. Furthermore, FSM has lamented the fact that Lindberg may produce a 1/200th scale "Graf Zeppelin" aircraft carrier and not one person can figure their marketing campaign.

Another thing a potential reader of this magazine should know is FSM does not go down in value. This reviewer has been reading the magazine since the mid-1990s and once sold a large collection of the magazine when moving into a new house. It was quite nice to find out there is a large market for the used magazines. Indeed, if you're doing a special conversion, such as making the proposed F2N-4 "swept wing Banshee" (competitor to the F9F Cougar) then you'll need this magazine because it will tell you how to convert the kits.

FSM is the best general military modeling magazine on the market. They cover everything from cars to rockets but spend 95% of their printed material on military items and of that amount the bulk covers the subject of WWII. So, a reader will see more than a few write ups on various models of M-4s, Panzer IVs, and T34s but will be treated to occasional articles on Hummers in Baghdad or a write up on scratch building a giant 1/96th scale ship model.

This magazine has helped me develope my skills as a modeler for quite a while. I am still a novice but I have to say, using some of the tips and tricks found in these articles has really helped me. Every now and then I look at some of the detail that I would have otherwise missed. It makes the difference between being a toy and being a historical story. My dad used to build models all the time and I remember he always told me that building the model was the easy part, making it look real is the FUN (hard) part! The weathering tricks and scratch building how to's are all awesome even for an intermediate/skilled modeler. Okay, now I am rambling on. It's a great buy! Get it now, you won't regret it!

The only real downside to this is the heavy emphasis on tanks and planes. I wish they'd put up more articles on other things. Ships or rockets, for example. That's why it doesn't get my 5 stars.

Want Finescale Modeler Discount?

I have been reading Finescale since about 1986. It has covered just about ever kind of modeling there is, so there is always some new information no matter what kind of modeler you are. There are other model magazines out there, that may be slightly better (depending on what kind of models you build), but those are more expensive. I build all kinds of models, so I have stayed with this one for many years. Once you start reading it, you will want to keep re-subscribing as well. It also makes a great gift for kids who have an interest in creating things.
