Kiplinger's Retirement Report

I first looked at the sample report online. It was great -lots of useful information to prepare for retirement, including some very good investment ideas. So I subscribed, and have now received several issues. There are sometimes some good information, but for the most part it is worthless. For example, in the January 2011 isue, 4 out of 20 pages was dedicated to turbulent times for long term care insurance that read more like a news article than true advice for what I should do. Another 4 pages were full page ads for banks, investment products, etc. The rest is what I would call useless fluff. By the way, Kiplinger, I am paying for this report -why so many ads? Anyhow, There is usually some semi-useful info in the report, but definitely not worth the cost.

This is one of the best retirement compilations I have come across. Many good ideas. Just one, idea for part time work including email address for call center work. So many retirement magazines focus only on how to save for retirement, not on lifestyle based on the amount of money you really do have at t the end. Highly recommend

I've always been pleased with the depth and coverage of Kiplinger magazine and reports. However, this time I'm a little disappointed.

The Retirement Report costs significantly more than the magazine but didn't seem to give me an appropriate value. True, is that I've only reviewed one issue and they may have had the summer doldrums, so before you put your money down look for an issue you can study to see if it covers what you want it to... unfortunately I didn't take my own advice... shame on me.

I subscribed to Kiplinger's Retirement Report several years ago, but decided to give it a try again. The magazine, if that's what you call a 20 page publication with 4 pages devoted to one page ads, is written for individuals who are in or near "the end of life" stage. The articles deal with conserving the money you have, provide interest rates that aren't even close to the highest insured rates available. They never give ideas for travel or things to do outside of your home or with grandchildren. The best and only section I ever got any thing from was the questions asked by readers section and that is kept to one page. I guess the Editors feel there is no point in expanding the one good section this brochure does have. I would recommend you save your money and Not subscribe to this publication. I suggest, instead, you subscribe to a real magazine with information you can use every month Kiplinger's Personal Finance a much superior publication for half the price.

Bicycle Times

Most bicycle magazines seem to be only for racers, bike geeks, or people who have $5000 to spend on a bike. This magazine is for people who just ride bikes. There are plenty of bikes reviewed in this magazine that cost less than $1000. Sometimes the stories are kind of dorky, and some of the people are kind of geeky, and whenever anything political is discussed, it is obvious that the publisher has a liberal lean; but as a conservative myself, that doesn't really bother me and this is the only bicycle magazine I buy any longer. All the other magazines have seemed to forgotten that not everyone is interested in racing or wearing funny-looking bicycle clothes when they ride or spending a fortune on a bicycle. This magazine is more in tune to those who just want a decent, affordable bicycle to ride to work or to go pick up some groceries, or to just have a little fun with. The magazine also covers cargo bikes, single speed bikes, fold-able bikes, and other bikes that most other magazines ignore. And because of that, this magazine is just more interesting to me because it does not have such a narrow focus of what bicycling is all about.

Like all magazines, some issues are better than others, so read a few to see if you like it. I have had some issues that I would rate as not very good, but others that are great, and most that are really pretty good. So overall, I consider this a magazine I am willing to buy a subscription to.

Great stories, pictures, and voice for cycling advocacy. Gets into touring, and commuting, covers bicycling for those of us who aren't into spandex.

This magazine contains a wealth of articles on everything from product reviews and building tips to operating your equipment in interesting places and ways.

Rugby World

This publication has all the essential news on the world of rugby. Though it is focused on European rugby, and especially English rugby, it is probably the best rugby publication available in the USA. However, the fact that it is published in Europe creates an annoying lag time of about a month. It often previews events that are over by the time the magazine arrives. It is also relatively expensive. None the less, if you are a rugby enthusiast, I highly recommend it.

I love the large pictures and great articles that Rugby World gives me every month. However I have been a little disappointed each time I renew my subscription it takes so long for next issue to arrive. I renewed my subscription in June, it's August now and I still don't have latest issue.

Cesars Way

So I know a lot of magazines are littered with "fashion features" or "product features," which are just ads and product placements, sugar-coated to be easier to digest. I guess it's not surprising Cesar Milan's magazine is no different. But I was a bit naive and expected more articles regarding training, tips, and information. You really have to navigate through this magazine to get to the "good stuff" Cesar Milan has to offer. There's a wonderful "Ask Cesar" section in which readers' questions are answered. However, this section only spans five or six pages and the answers from Cesar are not very detailed.

There are some good articles on helpless dogs being adopted and people who devote their lives to helping canines, but all of the content is still overshadowed by the amount of ads. It's really a shame, and I wish some of the products advertised were better than overpriced or inane things you don't really need. However, these ads have opened my eyes to the lengths some people go to pamper their pups, and that's a lot coming from me--I spoil my puppy rotten. Overall, this magazine has some good info if you're a Cesar fan, plus good photography throughout.

The kindle edition you also get is a nice touch. I can go through the new issue before it hits newsstands/my mail.

I do like this magazine, especially seeing how personal Cesar Milan gets in some of the articles it's easier to relate to. There are a lot of ads in this magazine, which is a little annoying, a little interesting, because they are for a lot of unique dog items. Interested to get the next issue.

This is a great magazine for anyone who loves dogs it goes way beyond the other dog magazines and of course it has the unique advice of Cesar Millan.The photography is superb and I especially like all the articles about people and their dogs.

i like the articles that cesar brings in this magazine. after im done reading an issue i pass it along to my other friends who are dog lovers and they love the magazine also.i like that he does include pit bulls and mixed breeds in his articles not just the pure breed dog.

This gentleman has had a remarkable career. His magazine is superb, and very well written. His TV series is educationable, has humor, and quite helpful. He goes out of his way to help those in need, no matter their class. The "Dog Whisperer" is now recognized around the world. "Cesars Way" is well worth the price.

Family Tree Magazine (1-year)

I really love this magazine because, first of all, I love Genealogy! And this magazine is a great source of information whether you are just starting out on your family search or if you've been hitting the archives for years.

And it is WEB oriented which is just what I'm looking for as I do a lot of research online. Family Tree Magazine always has new or important search tips. I learned to check characteristics of old photos for clues in narrowing a search for birth years when you don't have an exact date. Then I looked in the census for years around that time period to find the person I was looking for.

Family Tree Magazine has been a high-quality and useful tool for years in my genealogy research, but in the last months, there has been a clear decline in quality. Some of the articles have been poorly written, inaccurate, and even misleading, especially to those new to family research who are using Family Tree as a resource. They seem to be either choosing writers who are not expert in the articles' subjects, or their copy editors are inattentive or not suited for their jobs. As just a few examples, in recent issues the magazine has told me about about Civil War soldiers being "in a calvary," instead of a cavalry -a big difference!--, and that "the daguerreotype was still common during the 1960s,"--just 100 years off! In a current issue, an article about identifying old photos, never mentions ambrotypes, a common and popular photo method in the 1850s, and in the "1860" section, when the tintype was used and carried by thousands of Civil War soldiers because it had no glass, this dominant photo method is never mentioned at all.

Someone at Family Tree needs to take care of business, get the copy editors to work, and pay attention to quality to avoid the magazine from slipping even further in usefulness and reliability.

In all, I enjoy Family Tree Magazine as it is chock-full of interesting stories, tidbits and helpful tips for your genealogy research some of which are very creative and will help you further along in your genealogical quest.

My only gripe (and it's one that keeps me from regularly patronizing the magazine) is that the vast majority of their articles (I'd say a good 98%) focus on people whose ancestors were from the British Isles and Germany. While I realize the sheer number of those people compose the majority of the American population (for now), it leaves me, as a reader, feeling left out in the cold because I don't share that ancestry.

Useful tips can be carried over to whatever country your ancestors emigrated from but there are an increasing amount of people researching (or who would like to research) Southern and Eastern European ancestry so why not include us (no matter how scant the records may be?).

In all, though, Family Tree Magazine is an enjoyable and informative read and contains articles worth saving in every issue. Donna Di Giacomo

I love this magazine and have had a subscription for three years now. I always find some tidbit in each magazine that helps me with a brick wall that I have hit while researching my ancestors. It is, also, a very easy and quick read. I will not let this subscription expire!

Fitness Rx For Women

I had read through several woman's fitness magazines. Most had too much advertising, not enough articles on health, articles on travel (who cares). Fitness RX had exactly what I wanted they took care of the work for me of having to go to different sources to find health and fitness articles. The models they show on the cover aren't the supermodel skinny ones. Granted, it's only 6 issues, but there's definitely less fluff(advertising) than I'd seen in other magazines.

There's always an article covering a particlular muscle group and exercises you can do. It's great seeing what I've been doing in my weight training is recommended :).

There's a separate magazine published for Men and Women but they're not published at the same time. This explains the 6 issues(every other month). I got my subscription and after my first issue came, I got the men's subscription for my husband he liked what he saw in my issue. It's interesting comparing the articles used between the two(there are some articles used in both, but makes sense if it applies to both men and women).

We both enjoy this magazine and you won't be sorry you got it :)

This magazine is awful.

I just got my 3rd issue and they have been consistent with left page text, right page advertisment.

I am going to let my subscription to this one lapse.

The text is mostly lame "news" on nutrtion or exercise and sometimes you will get contradicting news on the same page. You also get some exericises and nutritional tips but nothing you can't get in Fitness magazine or Oxygen for better value (I am subscribed to both those as well and I don't feel like I am wasting my money every time I get them in the mail). I cut out useful articles and paste them in my own "Health" scrabook. I do that with a lot of articless from Oxygen and Fitness but so far I haven't used a single clipping from Fitness RX.

This magazine needs some serious improvement. I am surprised with all the great reviews here (which is why I subscribed to it in the first place)

My advice don't bother.

I like Fitness Rx because it gives you a LOT of information between it's pages. Sure it has advertisements, they need them to run the magazine (and make their profit). But unlike other magazines they are not overrun by advertisements with only room enough for one or two articles (which usually are repeats month after month after month).

Fitness Rx Gives you lots of information on a diverse group of fitness topics and has tons of helpful little tidbits strewn throughtout its pages.

Anyone that has even a slight interest in the fitness/nutrition field/area should get a subscription to this magazine (I've found it hard to find on some newstands).

I've been an "off again/on again" athlete for years and now, at 45 years old, needed this magazine to re-inspire me to get out there and get back in shape! It's format is so easy to read, you can spend 30 seconds or 30 minutes and still feel like you've just hit on something new/different/great! I would highly recommend this magazine...

But I think it's worth it, for the excellent, scientifically researched information (wow, what a concept!).

I like this magazine much MUCH better than Oxygen or Women's Health. Oxygen has too much fluff, supplement ads that look like articles (Fitness Rx does too, but not half as many as Oxygen), and tries to promote almost-instant results (yeah, right!). Plus some (not all) of the information meh, kinda dubious, if you ask me. I'd rather take advice from scientists than from a publisher / businessman, thanks. If I'm going to spend $5 on a magazine, I'd much rather it go to one with actual scientific data. I think the only other magazine worth subscribing to besides Rx is Prevention (though I like their special issues better than their regular issues).

Yes, you only get 6 issues per year, but with a subscription it's still only 3.49 an issue, which isn't bad at all for what you're getting.

It would be great if they could publish special issues like Prevention and Women's Health does that cover specific topics like health, flat abs, walking, etc.

But still, all in all, it's great to FINALLY find a women's fitness magazine no fluff and ALL substance highly recommended!
