Empire - England

Empire - EnglandThis is simply one of the best movie magazines on the market. You can always be sure to be updated on the latest movies and dvd releases, and it's nice that the crew of Empire doesn't take themselves too seriously; the articles are well written but keeps the humour intact as well, where other movie magazines seem to be too keen on showing how intellectual they are. Unfortunately it's rather expensive here in Denmark, but it's worth the price.

Empire magazine is one of the most beautifully produced entertainment magazines on the market. Yes, the yearly subscripton fee is on the expensive side but it is well worth the price. It is an oversized glossy British magazine filled with informative articles on both American and British films. The articles feature future films as well. The magazine is also filled with the most gorgeous photos...of the stars themselves and with many scenes from their latest films. I, especially, love their fabulous covers! This is a magazine that you will not be disappointed with!

Buy Empire - England Now

No question. If you followed ALL movie magazines, even the sci-fi and fantasy spin-offs, quick VHS magazines (remember those!) then you should also remember about the time BATMAN premiered (what great movie hype!) Empire Magazine ran its first issue and then the great BATMAN #2 issue and we have not stopped collecting since, nearing issue 200 now as I write this, it has been a good one so far and I am sure will keep up the same pace for all new to the greatest `non-digital' monthly pages on the planet, I urge young and old alike to start collecting and reading now.

Empire has the best letter editor quick reply page, best movie news section that is fairly reliable, some interesting actor introductions, then the SOLID MOVIE REVIEW SECTION that is pretty much the most effective appraised segment in any magazine on any planet and to think that it is about films makes it all the more better.

Film personality, editorial and staff movie trivia segments, inside scoops, Questions and Answers about how much is a bottle of milk, Empire helped get us closer to these people who made us so happy at the silver screen and to that I have Empire to thank. The spine quotes at the side that can win us a T-shirt, the new DVD section (I lived for the old VHS one) your designers really knew what made us young impressionably men do in the bathroom with Michelle Pfeiffer in the mid-section, thanks for that also and I end this review by saying that if there was any magazine in the world that I would like to write for, I would give my left one for these people.

This is truly amazing film work... and yeah, it does leave Premiere magazine to go pound on sand.

Try it.

I am a loyal, long time fan of EMPIRE magazine and have collected almost every issue from No.1. Being a British mag, it differentiates itself from others like Premiere and Entertainment Weekly by it's frank dissection of all movies, and provides a wide range of opinion and discussion. I will always read EMPIRE, and If you like movies, you should too.

If you are a movie fan looking for a read this is the magazine. Empire's strength is in treading a line between in-depth-analysis and shallow commercial puffs. In other words, it is not too serious yet again critical and independent.

Ok, the p.o.v. is from UK so you might want to take that into account. Otherwise it is best magazine for movie aficionados I have read.

Waterski (1-year auto-renewal)

WaterskiWaterski Magazine is a good publication for those who enjoy water sports and want to improve their skiing skills, look for buying advice, and find new places to ski. This publication centers its articles on water skiing advice, choosing the best equipment, keeping safe, etc., with an occasional article on boating, jet skiing and other related topics.

Advice seems to be the most important component of Waterski and it can be found in several of the monthly departments and in several of the featured articles. Rather than rely only on advice from the Waterski staff, the magazine also includes advice from water skiing professionals and semiprofessionals who have devoted much time and energy to the sport they love. Whether it's a set of exercises to improve flexibility or a lecture on proper posture, Waterski is always ready to offer its readers tips on ways to make water skiing more fun and more enjoyable.

Oddly enough, Waterski doesn't devote as much space in its departments and monthly features to buying as I predicted it would. Yes, it is common to find a section that describes new types of gear and there is a marketplace section in the back of each issue with things for sale. But there are only a few of these. The editors seem more concerned with the enjoyment and the competitive side of water skiing than with promoting new products and services.

The instructional pieces found in Waterski are very good and very thorough and I would surmise that most readers of Waterski come here for this reason. They often include step by step instructions for performing specific maneuvers, for utilizing a specific type of equipment to the fullest, for coping with injuries, etc. These instructional guides are often very useful for the skiing enthusiast because they explain exactly what to do, how to improve, and how to avoid problems.

Overall, Waterski is a good magazine for those who enjoy this sport and actively participate in water skiing a few times per year. The instructional material in this magazine is often very good, thorough, and easy to understand and the photographs of men and women flying across the surface of the water are often quite fascinating. These factors make Waterski a very good choice of reading material for skiing participants or for anyone else who enjoys waterrelated activities.

Britain (1-year auto-renewal)

BritainI've subscribed to it for about 8 years now and in most issues find at least one interesting thing to see or do, place to go or stay, lots of good material even in the advertisements. If you're planning a trip to Britain get this magazine because it will be a great help on just about any aspect of your trip.

In Britain is the official magazine of VisitBritain, the authority on British tourism. The articles and features are always interesting and personal without sacrificing accuracy. Admission prices, opening times, directions, and contact information are given at the end of each article. And the picture are gorgeous. I only wish this magazine was monthly!

I decided to check out this magazine when I came across it because I love England and all things English. I have been there a couple of times and would like to see more of England in my future travels. This magazine helps me learn about the different cities and towns in England and gives me a better idea of where I would like to go. Currently, I am not planing a trip, but I still enjoy reading about the things going on all over in the UK.

I LOVE THIS MAG! Okay, I'll admit I'm an Anglophile. But even so, this magazine exceeds my expectations. It has the most beautiful photos. And the articles are so well written. And they all have that distinctive British flavor to them, so they're just a delight to read. I look so forward to every issue. And by the way, they have wonderful articles about traveling in the U.K. so I'm saving each issue in hopes of someday seeing all these lovely places. (Besides, I can't bring myself to throw away all those gorgeous photographs!) I highly recommend this magazine!

I certainly agree with the other reviewers that Britain magazine is a wonderful publication to subscribe to. I made a decision to purchase this subscription because I intend to accomplish one of my personal goals to visit England for at least a week. Britain magazine provides gorgeous photos and extensive information on the various travel gems and destinations to check out during your visit(s) to Great Britain. For example, I currently have the March 2011 issue of Britain magazine. The following is some of the fascinating information that is featured in the March 2011 issue that helps make the publication a worthwhile read:

1)There is a special feature on Unusual Museums (with some very original and fascinating places to symbolize the Unusual moniker). For instance, The Museum of Witchcraft is featured in this issue. The location of this one of a kind museum is listed as being in Boscastle Cornwall. According to the magazine, many witches and warlocks are currently celebrating the fact that it has been opened for 50 years. There is a library of over 3,000 books inside of it, and is known to hold one of the world's most extensive collection of witchcraft paraphernalia(in addition the website to check out this museum is featured in the March 2011 publication). The article also lists The British Lawnmower Museum, which is an innovative museum for lawnmower enthusiasts.

2)There is a well organized compilation of Places to Stay that are listed. A couple of the places that fascinated me are: 1) The Royal Oak House and 2)Regency Cheltenham.

There is so much more great information featured in the well-done magazine. In my humble opinion, you definitely get a good quality publication in Britain magazine for what you pay (overall good value for the money). This magazine is very worthwhile to obtain if you have even a casual interest in visiting and/or living in Britain.

Flying Models

Flying ModelsI've been subscribing to Carsten's Flying Models for a few years now. I really enjoy the FF and C/L coverage as well as radio control. Flying Models covers all aspects of the hobby (aircraft modelling) very evenly, and doesn't just focus on "flavor of the month" ARF reviews.

Flying Models may cost twice as much as a subscription to Fly RC magazine, but it's worth five times as much in terms of enjoyment and knowledge gained. Every so often I flip through one of the bigger magazines without coming away with any useful information. I've never had that experience with a single issue of Flying Models, which is why it's my favorite magazine.

I agree with another reviewer that this mag looks very dated on the inside. But it's articles and tips are great. It not about color photos, but about really giving the complete review or insight. Articles tend to be longer and more in depth that other RC mags. Also it has a lot of info for people who like building as much as flying. If you are only into flying, another mag would be a better choice, but if you like to build and fly and tinker, this is a great choice.

Buy Flying Models Now

I like to fly C/L planes (stunt, combat, and sport), R/C power airplanes, R/C gliders, and R/C helicopters. I also teach the kids at a local children's home to build and fly model planes and amateur rockets, and am an FAA licensed airplane and helicopter pilot.

In my opinion, Flying Models is the best overall model airplane magazine! It is the only one that covers all types of model planes. Model Aviation magazine is mostly R/C, and occasionally covers some C/L, but not enough. I subscribe to several model airplane magazines, but I enjoy Flying Models the most.

I tried this subscription and I was completely dissatisfied. It's like a news paper on the inside, EVERYTHING IS BLACK AND WHITE!

I ultimately went with both Backyard Flyer and Model Airplane News. They are Awesome magazines that cover every aspect of RC Flying and everyone from newcomers to pros read these magazines.

Music K-8

Music K-8This is the best possible magazine especially for teachers on a budget. I am an elementary music teacher for grades K-4 and I have recently discovered this terrific magazine. It has quality sheet music in it along with a performance and accompaniment cd. With the purchase you have the right to copy the songs as you please. There are also many tips, activities, and worksheets for your students on various musical subjects. For a little extra you could order student reproducible parts.I believe that you can run a music program with just this magazine if you had to. The songs on the cd's are of the highest quality and with great instrumentation (without the cheese-factor). If you don't have an accompanist for a concert this would help. The price hardly fits this gem of a magazine!!!

Videomaker Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Videomaker MagazineIt is hard to distinguish one issue of this magazine from the next. Too much repitition with respect to technique and equipment. Not enough equipment reviews or other aspects of video (i.e., festivals, etc.). The articles on technique are almost clones of each other from issue to issue. Also, too many advertisements.

I'm a professional writer and video producer. I subscribed to this magazine via Amazon thinking it would provide a useful teaching tool for the flock of interns I employ every semester. Alas, not so: the magazine is less than useless, it's actually detrimental to the inexperience and maddening to me. Why? Because the writing is very sloppy; it appears the editor/publisher never actually reads what he publishes. The articles are incoherently written, full of typos and, on those rare occasions when the writer is actually communicating, frequently factually wrong. I've written the editor/publisher several times asking him to make corrections of fact, but he never does. Finally, I wrote asking that he cancel my subscription and refund the balance of my money -but no reply there, either. Indeed, it looks to me like the editor/publisher writes his own Letters to the Editor section, as the letters are always flattering -and completely content-free. It's too bad this magazine has existed for 25 years, thus likely discouraging anyone else from taking a stab at publishing for the beginning consumer video market. There is definitely a need for good writing published on a regular basis for that audience -but Videomaker is not that publication.

I am a computer videomaker myself, and if there is one invaluable resource avalible on the comsumer market, it's COMPUTER VIDEOMAKER. It reviews hardware, software, cameras, computers, and even gives you tips on how to make your videos look more professional. The articles are concise, accurate, and well written, so you don't have to search to find the information you are looking for. This magazine has made me a well informed videographer, and there is no doubt that it has helped, and will help how I plan, execute, and enjoy this incredibly rewarding hobby.

Text books are great, but outta date.

I get the best information from trade magazines. In my opinion, this has always been the best for the Videomaker. I first subscribed in 1998 when I jumped into the Avid world of NLE. Still relevant each month.

Wine Enthusiast (1-year auto-renewal)

Wine EnthusiastFrom my research, I see that this magazine has been published since 1988. As I am a new subscriber, I am ignorant as to how it may have changed over the years. I mention this because it has become common for long-published magazines to undergo major overhauls in layout and content (most recently Architectural Digest and Garden Design).

I have only received one issue of Wine Enthusiast so far (April 2011). I have found the content to be informative, interesting and useful, and I like the layout. It is definitely something I will read cover to cover. There are plenty of wine reviews, organized according to region and grape. There are also reviews for spirits and beer.

WE certainly has its full page advertisements, but they are placed well enough as to not be obnoxious. The travel and food spreads are a nice addition. The recipes look tasty and are not overly complicated, as is often the case in food and wine magazines.

It doesn't hurt that the first issue I received has a great article on Sangiovese, my favorite wine grape of all time!

I have subscribed to Wine Enthusiast for at least 4 years and have always liked the content. However, this year's renewal did not go smoothly and I was not sent the 2012 Top 100 issue. It's very disappointing because it's my favorite issue.

American Art Collector

American Art CollectorI ordered a subscription to Art Collector because I'd seen the mag in galleries and wanted to use it as a gallery and artist reference guide. However, Art Colllecter magazine covers a very limited scope of catagories of art. I was looking for info on modern, contemporary and new artists and galleries although the mag is beautiful, the art that's covered is beautiful but it's info and news is limited to nautical, midwestern and realistic themes. I had hoped to see more progressive work included in the publication.

I have been collecting art for the past six or seven years and before this magazine was published I spent countless hours on the internet researching artists and galleries. I own over 150 oils, most of them painted by artists whose work appears in this magazine. Many collectors now depend on the internet to locate works of art they wish to purchase. I feel that the galleries and artists mentioned in this magazine are reputable and well-established.

A cardinal rule in the purchase of art ( for the most part! ) is to buy only what you love, not for investment purposes. If one buys with some knowledge of the artist it is possible with the help of this magazine to buy what you love AND artists whose work is going up in value. I am happy to report that many artists whose work I bought six or seven years ago are no longer affordable to me. Yes, that's a good thing. American Art Collector, unlike so many magazines which showcase art the average buyer cannot afford, informs the beginning and experienced collector by giving them invaluable information.

Buy American Art Collector Now

This magazine and its 'sister' publication have become two of those small joys that add to the enjoyment of life. I am not kidding. Considering all the garbage that passes for art it is a pleasure to look at and enjoy this magazine each month. The quality of the publication is first rate and like Western Art Collector the full color spreads are a pleasure. I agree with the reviewer that felt that it was impossible to throw out an issue. I strongly recommend this magazine.

For the past year, I've bought a few American Art Collector magazines from various bookstores; now, I've decided to purchase it for the convenience of having it in my mail, rather than making trips to see if it's come in or not. American Art Collector is an excellent, beautiful, timely, and intelligent periodical; it's of interest to collectors, artists(such as myself), and those who appreciate art in its many genres. Articles are well-written and depictions are excellent. I highly recommend it for all art lovers. Having it on my sofa table and reaching for it at leisure is one of life's little pleasures.

Digital Camera Magazine - Incls CD-Rom

Digital Camera Magazine - Incls CD-RomI concur w/ the prev. reviewer. Forget the American mags, they are either full of advertisements or they are for elitist pompous professionals who want to show off their work and make snooty comments. Digital Camera mag is great for the novice and intermediate level photographers out there who want to learn how to take great shots. They give you simple, hands-on instructions in photoshop or out in the field and how to improve YOUR photos. Sometimes they give you a cheap DIY option vs. other mag's telling you that you need to buy such and such to achieve an effect. Oh, can't forget the FREE CD PShop TUTORIALS!! Gorgeous photo spreads from other amateurs, articles about professional photographers, monthly photo contests, relevant information, friendly to the reader, and not condescending at all (like most of the camera mags out there). And yes, near the end of the mag they talk about up and coming gadgets but that's in the back where it belongs. ^_^ If you just picked up a digital SLR and want to know more about how to get the most out of it. BUY THIS MAG!!!!

Just the finest photography magazine on the market. Not filled with ads and ratings, but great how to's and tutorials. If I could read only one mag, this would be it.

Buy Digital Camera Magazine - Incls CD-Rom Now

Very practical and very useful magazine from England and well worth the big price especially since you get a dvd tutorial with the mad every month

Read Best Reviews of Digital Camera Magazine - Incls CD-Rom Here

I had subscriptions to most of the American zines. About the only thing learned = what new cameras had been recently released, and even then, the writing style is akin to cheerleading rather than need-to-know info like noise and image quality. I cancelled them all, and instead started making monthly treks to my local newsstand for this and other UK zines. Simply stated, I learn more per issue than I do reading full books on whatever topic. One issue may be devoted to landscapes, another to macros, flowers, sunsets, etc. If you genuinely want to learn how to improve your photography, THIS is your key.

BTW, do NOT think this is all about dSLRs only. While I do have a dSLR, I also have a pocket-friendly Fuji e900 digicam (replacing an FZ50, which itself was replaced with a dSLR). The e900 has multiple dSLR-like controls. This zine teaches what control to change to get which effect in a particular circumstance, so it's also manna for those with digicams sporting an aperture/speed control dial mode, as well as white balance, exposure compensation and other tweaking controls.

It's admittedly a big chunk out of your wallet in one step, but turns out, it's the best bang for the buck long term.

Want Digital Camera Magazine - Incls CD-Rom Discount?

I have bought the magazine from a local book store and there is no doubt this is the best photo & Photoshop mag ever. The subscription however sucks!!! I paid on July 2nd it is now Nov.9th over 18 weeks later come on!!! Really? It would get here quicker if you just stick it in a bottle and throw it in the Atlantic. If you can't get the subscription right perhaps I'll just buy it at the store every now and then.
