Q - England

Q - EnglandThere used to be tons of music magazines in Britain, but gradually they've disappeared, giving way to lifestyle magazines that run the gamut from celebrity gossip, to articles on (of all things) health. Q has always been focused on music and is pretty much the best barometer of the British music scene. It's stylish, irreverent and intelligent. They're aren't afraid to offend the interviewees neither.

A subscription to Q will keep you up to date on breaking new bands, in-depth interviews with musicians, latest album reviews, (many of which don't get US releases, and certainly aren't played on Clear Channel radio stations) and some really great photography. All of this is delivered with the usual wry humour of good British journalism.

$140 is a lot to pay in one go. I buy it monthly from my local bookshop where the price works out a bit higher, but only because I keep moving house and can't be dealing with changing my address, and I like to support local stores. It's worth bearing in mind that on average 4 issues a year come with full length CDs which mitigates the initial outlay a bit.

Go on... subscribe, you know you want to.

This subscription is the way to go if you are sick and tired of finding the last copy of Q magazine for sale on the newstands is missing the 'enclosed' CD because some chump has stolen it before you could. This rock music magazine is superior to others on the market, in my opinion, because it has excellent production values, i.e. luxuriantly thick and glossy paper and high quality reproductions. As a bonus, the writing is superior and highly imaginative. An expecial favorite section of mine is the 'man on the streets' section in the back where concert goers are canvassed for their opinions on the show they have just watched. I like it because the reporter is sure to get a good cross-section of the audience and it clues one in on the reaction different types of people have to the band. In addition, this magazine covers US and worldwide bands that may not be as well-known here in the USA as they are in UK; often these are bands that we might want to know better. The reviews section is always great, and usually the magazine will highlight a mini-section e.g. 'Best R&B albums from the 1970's, in which lost gems are rediscovered for the reader who may be too young to remember or even know about these artists. This magazine will have you finding, buying and liking albums by bands you've never heard of, and who can beat the home delivery aspect for nickels more than the newstand price?

Buy Q - England Now

This one's a good one from good ol' UK. Let me explain the perks:

1. You get a perspective on music that isn't totally Americanized; that is, mainstream boy bands and Creed clones aren't cluttering up the pages.

2. If you like Britpop, then naturally you would choose a magazine closer to their turf for better reviews.

3. The British aren't so conservative with their magazines, thus the pages of this magazine can be especially juicy.

Q is the only music magazine worth reading, in my opinion. Too bad it's British and I'm American and a subscription to it costs an arm and a leg over here. There is no American magazine that measures up. American music magazines tend to either cover crap or be full of dull, fawning 12 page interviews of bands you haven't heard of yet. Q mixes the old and familiar and with the new and trendy and doesn't leave out anything, no matter how uncool. This, combined with its irreverent tone, makes for a music magazine that is actually an enjoyable, funny read. It's a little Britain-centric, of course, but that's okay because British music is, in general, better than American anyway.

Want Q - England Discount?

...it is also one of the things that makes me think of home when I am not there. Q has a definitve style in the music market, while most music mags focus on a musical genre or a particular target audience, Q lets any music or artist with an ounce of talent or credibility be their prize. To this end they have featured musical interviews with everyone from Madonna to Leonard Cohen, Blur to George Michael. The breadth is incredible, the journalistic style is artistic and grittily honest. The interest and need to share on the subject of sound talent is endless. The only musical snobbery you will bare witness to here is an avid aversion to the growing "pop stars/pop idol/American idol/x factor", style dross which floods todays market. Thank goodness they do so instead of pandering to it without question like the mass of vile celeb trash mags do! I use the term "celeb" in it's loose sense here since one only has to show ones naked behind on Big Brother to be labelled with this dubiuos accalade these days!

The best testament to Q, for myself and many Brits, was that the late great John Peel (Uber DJ and font of all musical knowledge that was worth knowing) loved the magazine.

It kind of is a printed "Old Grey Whistle Test" I suppose, Peel's much loved BBC live music show from the 60's, 70's and 80's. If you love music then you will love Q!

RifleShooter (1-year auto-renewal)

RifleShooterIt covers reviews and suggestions of various rifles of different calibers. Very informative for the rifle shooter in general and important features to look for when purchasing a rifle. It does not cover military rifles in great details which is nice but rifles that the general public would be interested in shooting at rifle ranges. I have just extended my subscription because I enjoyed the magazine.

This is a good magazine. It covers a broad range of rifles and information and accessories for them.

Please note that the magazine is not a monthly publication, there are 6 issues a year, when comparing subscription prices to other magazines.

Flying Models

Flying ModelsI've been subscribing to Carsten's Flying Models for a few years now. I really enjoy the FF and C/L coverage as well as radio control. Flying Models covers all aspects of the hobby (aircraft modelling) very evenly, and doesn't just focus on "flavor of the month" ARF reviews.

Flying Models may cost twice as much as a subscription to Fly RC magazine, but it's worth five times as much in terms of enjoyment and knowledge gained. Every so often I flip through one of the bigger magazines without coming away with any useful information. I've never had that experience with a single issue of Flying Models, which is why it's my favorite magazine.

I agree with another reviewer that this mag looks very dated on the inside. But it's articles and tips are great. It not about color photos, but about really giving the complete review or insight. Articles tend to be longer and more in depth that other RC mags. Also it has a lot of info for people who like building as much as flying. If you are only into flying, another mag would be a better choice, but if you like to build and fly and tinker, this is a great choice.

Buy Flying Models Now

I like to fly C/L planes (stunt, combat, and sport), R/C power airplanes, R/C gliders, and R/C helicopters. I also teach the kids at a local children's home to build and fly model planes and amateur rockets, and am an FAA licensed airplane and helicopter pilot.

In my opinion, Flying Models is the best overall model airplane magazine! It is the only one that covers all types of model planes. Model Aviation magazine is mostly R/C, and occasionally covers some C/L, but not enough. I subscribe to several model airplane magazines, but I enjoy Flying Models the most.

I tried this subscription and I was completely dissatisfied. It's like a news paper on the inside, EVERYTHING IS BLACK AND WHITE!

I ultimately went with both Backyard Flyer and Model Airplane News. They are Awesome magazines that cover every aspect of RC Flying and everyone from newcomers to pros read these magazines.

Lok Magazin

Lok MagazinThis superb magazine covers German, Austrian and Swiss national and private railroads in detail as well as news from other European countries. With open access now in effect on European railroads there is plenty of colorful action to report. Each edition has four sections: News, Main Article, Vehicles and History. It is lavishly illustrated with high quality color photographs, and some black and white ones in the history section. These photographs alone justify the cover price. It has an unusual format for a magazine, as it is printed in a near Octavo book size. This allows it to be kept on a bookshelf without a binder. It also fits discretely into ones briefcase! Each edition has 114 pages and it is not overwhelmed with advertisements. Indeed, most advertisements are for other offerings from the magazine's publisher. It is, in this reviewer's opinion, an essential monthly read for every aficionado of the mainland European railway scene.

Ophthalmology Management

Ophthalmology ManagementThis journal, Ophthalmology Management, is concise and excellent for those of us in private practice who need to be involved in both the business management as well as scientific and clinical aspects of medicine. I cannot remember the last time I did not read an issue from cover to cover. ADAM KOENIGSBERG MD

Fortune (1-year auto-renewal)

FortuneI would say the quality of coverage is pretty poor. The articles are recycled from those which have already appeared on the web at . Quite a large volume of the magazine is devoted to the advertisements, so much so, it feels as though articles are inundated with adverts. I would say that the articles are mediocre compared to magazines like BusinessWeek and The Economist.

I am not renewing my subscription.

Fortune magazine appears to be encountering a crisis in identity and focus. Between all the business magazines Fortune does not stand out from the crowd as a quality publication. Depending on your needs, I would recommend other magazines that are more attuned to the needs of business leaders.

Forbes: Conservative viewpoint

Business week: Quick summary of the weeks events

Economist: Excellent reporting, more neutral point of view

Buy Fortune (1-year auto-renewal) Now

I've tried all the business and investing magazines out there, and this is by far the best one. Money is full of fluff, Business Week's coverage is too trivial and sensational. Fortune hits the mark with deep relevant topics.

The articles aren't quite as good as they were several years ago, but that doesn't stop it from being better than the rest.

Read Best Reviews of Fortune (1-year auto-renewal) Here

I am an avid reader. But due to time constraints, over time I have pruned my subscriptions down to Fortune, The Economist, Kiplinger and The Atlanticall great magazines. Fortune is probably the only one I pretty much read cover to cover. I find the articles to be well researched and well written. When you think about all the work that went into putting together an issue, you have admit it is an amazing value.

Great Magazine that covers the main points of the top 500 companies. This is a great magazine if your looking to keep up to date on the larger movement of the economy. This magazine comes at a great value and the stories they produce show usually the general movement of the market. Well worth read if applied right for beginning investor. I enjoy the special interest articles on CEOs making a difference and I think could be written about more often.

Excellence : a Magazine About Porsche Cars

Excellence : a Magazine About Porsche CarsI read a quantity of automotive magazines. I have been driving, modifying, and enjoying Porsches since the late 60s.

If your interests lie in Porsche-land, the hands down best magazine is "excellence". From the early days when it was called "Porsche" [PCNA didn't like that and forced a name change], through the latest issue, "excellence" has always had the best, most original reading on the planet.

Sure, sometimes they have inaccurate technical information and incorrect specifications. Sometimes their writers and editors have missed the enthusiast's point. BUT, nothing else even comes close for issue after issue of superior reading enjoyment.

All I can say is keep them coming!

John Rice

I thought it worthwhile to add that any issues I have had with excellence magazine as I noted previously..in terms of their tech info. They were actually small nitpicks and they remain WORLD'S ahead of their competition. No one else is close. It seems that every time I buy one of the UK Porsche magazines I am disgusted at how inept and lazy they are about keeping their facts accurate. I still sometimes buy them but only because they have a particularly unique article I want to read. I have NEVER had issues like this with excellence. I have subscribed since the first issue and suspect I will continue until I either get too old to read/drive.... or die. ;->

JR

This is a great magazine for both owners and fans of Porsche. Bruce Anderson's columns alone are a good enough reason to purhcase it. The mix of topics makes it a magazine for everyone; from reviews of the latest and greatest to articles on older Porsches which well within the reach of any enthusiast. I have subscribed for many years and can't conceive of it not arriving in my mailbox.

The market section and owner reports make it invaluable for someone looking to purchase a Porsche (no one would sell one would they?), I have been trying hard not to to use excellent or excellence in this description, but quite frankly it is an excellent magazine!

Great magazine with minimum fluff for advertisements. Good technical articles and an interesting mix of street and track and restoration. Nice to see original articles and columns not recyclyed stuff like I used to see in R & T and Car & Driver before I cancelled them.

If you are an enthusiast then this magazine will be your first read ...even before pano.

Probably the most consistent and best publication on Porsche in the world(including those by Porsche. the company)

includes fascinating classic Porsche stuff, Fast modification examples, Tuner set-ups old and new,and racing news.

New product is also reviewed in an honest way. I wish they published it 20 times a year. WELL DONE!

Nursing Made Incredibly Easy

Nursing Made Incredibly EasyEasy to access information -isn't that what most bedside nurses need most? NMIE offers tables, pictures, and other methods to easily access the information you need. It is not a research journal, and doesn't pretend to be. NMIE is for clinical nurses who need information fast and easy, and want to be shown how to put new information into clinical use immediately.

I recommend this journal to anyone who wants to stay up-to-date quickly and easily. It's a very helpful addition to every nurse's library.

I have never subscribed to any nursing magazines before. I always felt that they weren't very practical for my job in the ER as a RN. Well, this is the best nursing magazine that I have ever read. The articles are very informative and well written, hence the name of the magazine. I have gained valuable knowledge reading the articles. Any new and experienced nurse should read and subscribe to this magazine.

The book series is wonderful also!

This journal/magazine presents evidence-based information in a format that makes learning accessible and much easier, especially for nurses who don't have a lot of extra time. It uses creative illustrations and cartoons in the sidebars to illustrate key points. You can learn even by just browsing through the tables and illustrations.

My very first issue was quickly snipped into pieces for both staff and patient education materials. I used some of the illustrations and tables on our bulletin boards in the hospital hallway (appropriately referenced, of course). Nurses constantly commented on how they loved the illustrations and summary tables, how they really clarified some of the pathophysiology for them. Then, imagine how surprised I was to see the bulletin board a week later with BLANK SPACES glaring at me!! People, most likely patients, had actually stolen things off of the bulletin board! Looks like they finally found some information that made their disease easy to understand!

I have read so many comments about this publisher and the customer service they offer. As a recent nursing graduate, my father ordered me a gift subscription to AJN & Nursing Made Incredibly Easy in JULY. In one weeks time, AJN sent me April, May, June & July issues. Nursing Made Easy sent me Jan/Feb, March/April, May/June issues. This made me so upset! AJN had my subscription to expire in Mar & Nursing Made Easy had my ending in Jan/Feb. I called both magazines customer service (the number is printed in the front of both magazines) and they changed my subscription to expire in July (which is when it should have started & ended). I can't believe that these magazines do this. Everyone who has experienced these problems should call customer service and make them make it right!!!!!

Auto Motor Und Sport

Auto Motor Und SportAssuming you can read German, then "auto motor und sport" is simply an amazing publication there is nothing else like it. Come to think of it, Japanese car magazines are perhaps better but few outside Japan can read them.

This magazine presents and tests cars that few in the US will ever see thanks to our arrogant Federal regulations. The test standards in this magazine make US publications look childish; e.g. a vehicle's 0-60mph time is not the end-all, be-all performance test... no wonder American cars are the way they are...

In other words, this is not for NASCAR fans, but for those who appreciate tests of vehicles done from the perspective of the world's most demanding drivers Germans this is the perfect magazine.
