I love this magazine. You will find great inspiration, stimulating imagery and information. They connect well with their readers. I rarely will spend so much on a magazine but I do on this one, because there is always something in the publication that will benefit you.

I have been a photographer for many years, and this is probably the best photo mag I have ever read. The quality of the articles are really good, and the DVD's that are included in the magazine are often very helpful. You get what you pay for. This is an expensive subscription but well worth it. It is not uncommon to see the new-stand price for this magazine at over $20 a mag, and I have paid this price many times and been glad that I did.

Proceedings of the United States Naval Institute

As an Air Force officer, I envy this magazine. It's got a definite nautical emphasis, but the other services aren't neglected. Without a doubt the best single thing going in print for understanding the current policies/thought/developments in doctrine and technology of the US military.

It should be stressed that the USNI magazine "Proceedings" is NOT officially connected with the US Government in any way. As it says on the cover, the USNI is "the Independent Forum on National Defense"

From Proceedings you can get detailed articles on current naval technology and trends, plus points of view on military issues that would NOT be welcome in the halls of the Pentagon, but are at the same time presented with professionalism and due respect for all concerned. The articles are written by formerly and currently serving officers and enlisted military people who are mostly sea service people (Navy, Coast Guard, and Marines), and by civilians with pertinent backgrounds and specific area expertise. It is filled with always up to date, and sometimes contentious, articles and opinion pieces making it one of the most valued magazines in my reading bins.

Super Picsou Geant

Reading "Uncle Scrouge" in French is a great way to improve vocabulary and the story often make me smile as well :). Unlike the previous reviewer has stated my Picsou always arrives with the wrapper intact in perfect condition.

This magazine about Scrooge McDuck (Picsou) is put out by Disney, with all the same illustrators, and stories, only written in French. We read it to improve our conversational French. It's fun, it's light, and lest you think your French skills are beyond a "children's book" let me ask you this: Can you say "shipwreck" in French? What about "jet engine," "surgical research," "shoe buckles," or "hallucination?" Reading the magazine gives you idioms you would never pick up in French class. We absolutely LOVE our magazines! On the down side, expect a delay of at least 3 MONTHS (yes, months) for the first magazine to arrive, and alas, when it does, the wrapper will be all torn off and the cover smootched. Copies of these magazines from the 70's are collected, and you can find old issues online used for around 10 bucks if you want to try one before you get a subscription.

Computerworld : the Newspaper for It Leaders - Ma

As a long-time IT professional, I've read InfoWorld, Information Weekly, SysAdmin, Dr Dobbs, etc. etc. In 2006, the only one I read with any regularity is Computerworld. It is relevant, smart, and covers an almost impossible range of topics in a very broad IT world.

Of late, they've been doing single-page overviews of new technology (with basic definitions) intended to get you up to speed on a buzzword or technology, and point you in the right direction for more information. They have excellent columnists on the whole (I can do without Curt Monash's DBMS theories) and some amazing reporters. There's hardly a week that doesn't bring me something new to learn or consider.

Rounding out its better aspects is the sections closer to the front, containing shorter articles and snippets that often lead to more reading on my part, all good pointers. Finally, there's the Shark Tank, the back page column that lists dumb things in IT (think Dilbert's daily routine).

My biggest problem has to do with the Editor-in-Chief. I hardly ever agree with Don Tennant's editorials, and think he's more of a China apologist than anything else. Still, his magazine is a very good one, and worth reading for anyone in the IT industry who needs a really good view of what's going on today. I can tolerate his dumb opinions, so long as the rest of the magazine remains so good.

RifleShooter (1-year auto-renewal)

It covers reviews and suggestions of various rifles of different calibers. Very informative for the rifle shooter in general and important features to look for when purchasing a rifle. It does not cover military rifles in great details which is nice but rifles that the general public would be interested in shooting at rifle ranges. I have just extended my subscription because I enjoyed the magazine.

This is a good magazine. It covers a broad range of rifles and information and accessories for them.

Paris Review

If you were locked in an attic by cruel parents, and allowed to read only one literary journal, The Paris Review would entertain you with its sword-slicing poetry, move you with soul revealing fiction, and show you the bare-knuckled truth about human nature in its non-fiction. You would emerge from that attic, years later, better educated and aware than 80% of the planet. The other 20%; you could hold your own.

The writing in the Paris Review is probably unmatched elsewhere in a popularly available magazine. Other magazines and reviews sometimes have top quality pieces, maybe one or two excellent pieces in each issue, but I found that the high standards of quality in the Paris Review is very rarely matched. The Paris Review unlike most publications is systematically excellent.

The fictional stories are interesting and seemingly unique. The poetry is vivid and compelling. The interviews and non-fiction pieces also are no less enticing, excellent and important. If you are interested in writing, in reading compelling fiction and non-fiction, or the creative arts generally, I strongly recommend this magazine.

This is one of my favorite subscriptions and I look forward to my quarterly issue. For those who think that $12 an issue is a bit high: there is almost no advertising in this periodical. There are a few ads (typically two near the front and the back cover) from publishers or Chanel, or something else classy. No ads fast food, deodorant, etc...

What this means is that this periodical must survive with almost all of their profits from readers and subscribers.

Onto content. Every single month there averages about 200 pages + of poetry, short stories, essays, and interviews. The content is varied and of excellent quality. Many works are from contemporary and rising authors but several are from older and even deceased writers (such as an unpublished work of Bolano's being printed in four parts in four issues). Again, the content varies but is of high quality. The last issue had interviews with a couple of iconic science fiction writers (I use the term science fiction loosely): Samuel Delaney and William Gibson. These interviews were so well executed and written that I now have novels from both authors, as well as some of the authors they mentioned, on my library queue. In a previous issue I read a Franzen interview and decided that I needed to read his novels (glad I did), as well as a Ray Bradbury interview that rekindled my interest in Fahrenheit 451.

Some of the stories and poetry deal with real issues: sex, drugs, death, life; so this is not all sunshine and happy unicorns. There are a few of those for optimists, but many of the stories and poems are dark, depressing, and real. In their pages I have discovered a wide range of literature and I will continue to support their periodical as long as they maintain their high standards for quality literature.

I ordered this review a couple months ago and now I am looking into buying back issues because of how much I enjoy reading this. It is a great literary magazine.

Sueddeutsche Zeitung - Daily - Mon-Sat

This is Germany's leading quality daily. It has a paid circulation of more than 445,000 copies and it is one of the few newspapers with an increasing number of readers. Its readers are among the best educated and top earners in Germany. If you are interested in more data you can find it here:

Personally I like top stories on the first page, the background information on the second, the reportage on page 3 and leaders on page 4, especially if written by Dr. Heribert Prantl. Then they have broad coverage of German and international news. They have more space for editorial content than almost any other German daily. The feature pages ("Feuilleton") are a pleasure to read, especially the articles about politics. Of course there is an business section but I prefer to read The Economist about things like this. Since the paper is edited in Munich they always have some Bavarian news, too. So if you want to know about Oktoberfest, this is your paper. Last, not least there is the famous Streiflicht, a daily gloss on the first page which gives you a refreshing view about the "really important" news today.

Koream Journal

Covers interests for Korean-Americans, but mostly focuses on the Gen 1.5 and 2 crowd, particularly those in their 20s and 30s. So lots of ads for wedding stuff, Crown Royal, cars, dance clubs, apartments, and the like. They do try to have a broader age / interest appeal with historical pieces and community articles, but the preponderance is for the younger, hipper crowd. Geographically the articles and advertisements center on Los Angeles.

Also the editorial tone of the magazine leans unquestionably to the left. One gets the feeling the staff was exposed directly or indirectly to the fashionably politically correct perspective in college or maybe just through MTV. Not a big leap these days.

But that doesn't detract too much from the magazine as a whole. And sure, there are editorial mishaps, such as poor grammar or organization, especially in those retrospective features.

But overall this magazine fills an important niche that truly no other magazine does. It's good to see people stepping up to enhance communication and awareness among KAs in a fashionable, up to date format.

For a magazine targeted to a small group of people it's well written and high quality.

Articles are both current and interesting.

My only complaint is the last part of the magazine is wasted space with comminity news and doesn't seem to fit the "hip" vibe of the rest of the magazine.

Yoga Journal (1-year auto-renewal)

I am just starting my yoga practice, and as I looked for more details of poses and such online after class, I kept ending up on the YogaJournal.com website. Last time grocery shopping I picked up a copy, couldn't put it down, and ordered a subscription. As a beginner I have found it VERY interesting with articles on how yoga is helping patients mentally and physically with breast cancer, common sense articles on herbs for ailments AND yoga poses to ease an ailment also, many others--I read it literally cover to cover. I found it really helpful to go from class (a bunch of ladies bonding over our struggles to balance or stay in a pose) to how the rest of the (yoga) world perceives/practices/enriches through yoga! I found it perfectly readable for a complete beginner to augment class instruction (oooh the possibilities!!!) to wanting to set it aside and review as I get further along in the future. And their website is a wealth of information as well.

I'm really quite fond of this magazine. It does a very good job of mixing in a variety of aspects of a yoga life, and addressing each aspect in a helpful and entertaining manner.

There are of course pages on poses, with clear photos, succinct instructions and explanations on how to modify them if you have to. There are pages on eating healthy. There are stories from people in a variety of walks of life, talking about how even minor changes in their lifestyle brought about significant results.

Then there are the pages which can make a huge difference in another way. A recent article had an article on forgiveness how it is so important not to carry grudges and hatred. Those feelings rarely harm to "person who did you wrong" but they eat up your own body, filling you with stress, tension, and unhappiness. It's amazing how many people I run into who carry these kinds of whole-heart grudges, often from incidents 10 or more years ago!

If you're more advanced, there is content for you as well. Articles about some of the intricate details of yoga might seem a bit complex for newbies, but if you store your magazines, after a few months going back and re-reading those articles can bring fresh information.

There are articles about youngsters doing yoga, older people doing yoga, and anything in between. There are ads for very expensive retreats in exotic locations but also information on being mindful in a frugal manner.

I do have to say that most of the images shown are of young, 20-something sexy models, and it'd be nice to show a wider selection of people doing the poses. Still, that complaint can probably be made with just about every magazine out there.

This magazine is a good one to read if you are someone who practices yoga. It is subject to some of the same things that people will find annoying with many magazines for the most part. Yes, it has changed with more advertisements, but many magazines have had the same thing as they try to keep going. The subsciption is reasonably priced and they need to stay in business.

Basically you need to look past that and read the articles. There is alot of valuable tips and very good information about yoga in the pages that will benefit you and makes it worthwhile. Every month I glean one or two things at least that I find personally worthwhile and it keeps me up to speed about yoga in general. If you are concerned, just pick up an issue before subscribing and give it a chance and read the articles. You will be happy you did.

Let me start out that I paid $5 for a one-year subscription to this magazine, that to my understanding will be 6 issues. The cover advertises the stand price as $4.99 an issue, so I'm very please with the price I paid....Reason primarily being that this magazine is two-thirds advertisements! Very nearly every time I turn the page there is one full page of ads and in many cases, the side with content has 1/3 page ad or the occasional 2/3!!!

Ohh I enjoy some of the articles, the depth of the yogi mindset seems to be in every one of them. The many pictures are very inspiration with a few lines here and there that I like to write down for inspiration as well. In a nutshell: Depending on the price, I will probably renew. It's a nice read, however halfway through the magazine I'm incredibly annoyed with the amount of advertisements for expensive extras. I will update as the year goes on as to whether the articles are too similar from one month to another.

It has broadened my view of yoga in general and provided excellent advise on how to improve my practice via pose specific instruction and photographs as well as describing the actual benefits internally and externally of the pose itself on my body. Geographical: the Royal Geographical Society Magazine

In my opinion, this is the best Geographical magazine around. The images are as good as they come, the articles are amazing. The style is popular enough so that everyone can read them, and they have enough information so that everyone will learn something from them. Every issue has some biographical articles, some on recent expeditions, some on nature, some historical, and plenty of book reviews. In short, this magazine gives you a little bit of everything. What I really like about it is that it does not shy away from contorversial or serious issues. Here we can read about unkown genocides, natural disasters, or climate change. Geographical does dare to take sides in political issues. It is not for someone that is only out for a leisurely read. It is for us who want a leisurly way to keep informed!

I knew the magazine wouldn't be unbiased, but I wasn't expecting it to be so totally overun with global warming propaganda. I expected a lot of articles to have a slant towards conservationism and environmentalism, but it seems this one issue permeates almost the whole perspective. It's ultimately nothing more than a pretentious advocacy rag. Journalism becomes irresponsible when it passes over meaningful information and facts to deliver nothing more than an appeal from subsequently uninformed perspective. I give it two stars because about 1/10th of the articles are actually interesting and it's not totall overrun with advertisements, most of which are relevant or related to global travel.

Moment (1-year auto-renewal)

"Moment" is an excellent magazine. It discusses many various issues that concern the modern Jew; politics, culture and -of course -religion. Often the magazine will discuss controversial issues (with reader imput) so you can get the "scoop" on the latest debates.

I especially appreciate that fact that "Moment" does not take a specific position on issues; the magazine is very good at providing the viewpoint from the perspectives of all types of Jews.

I have read 'Moment' occasionally over many years, and this in the hope of enriching my knowledge of the Jewish world. There have been articles and features which I have found useful. But on the whole the Magazine does not seem to me to be in a class with 'Commentary' or even 'Midstream'. I would say my reaction to it has been by and large lukewarm. I also believe it could be much more forthright and positive in regard to Israel.

I look to Moment Magazine to get a sense of Jewish issues. They offer a wide range of articles about Jewish politics, culture, and religion. Moment makes Jewish life exciting, and always finds quirky angles. They also offer an excellent range of viewpoints on all these topics. Particularly on Israel, they are able to convey the complexities of the state with all its strengths and problems.

I've been a reader of Women's Health (1-year) off and on for many years and have given some thought as to the best way to characterize the magazine for potential buyers. Here's essentially what you get in every issue of the mag:

-updated and interesting FITNESS information

-WEIGHT LOSS information/tips

-HEALTH information pertaining to women

-NUTRITION information for better health

-information on having a better SEX life

Note that some of the words are captialized. Well, they represent the main topics that you'll be reading about in this magazine. So, if you're looking for the latest info on any of these kinds of topics, it's worth your time to check it out. Also recommend The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution for women suffering from plantar fasciitis.

My boyfriend ordered subscriptions to Men's and Women's health (for himself and for me, respectively) about six months ago. It didn't take me too long to figure out that women's health could be more aptly titled "men's health lite" i.e., a similar magazine with significant alterations (read: reductions) in reading level, scientific basis, and practicality.

The editors of these magazines seem to think that men seek scientifically-sound, medically proven facts for nutrition and exercise physiology, while women are looking for cheesy motivation and advice about lipstick colors.

If you want fluff, you might as well save the money and buy one of the less expensive women's 'health' mags (Self, Fitness, etc.); if you want more substantial content, try Men's Health. (Which niche Women's Health fulfills, then, seems unclear.)

Unlike many female oriented magazines this one has some fine advice on health, fitness & exercise. You won't find destructive over the top dieting tips that could make you very ill & it is not overloaded with ads like "Oxygen, Shape, & Self." For those of us who want overall fitness, cross training, interesting recipes, & new outdoor activities to try this magazine is the best one out there. Even for all of us middle aged gals trying to get back some of our youthful health & appearance. Also, if you are into weight training, I would try a muscle magazine for that. WH is not that big on that subject. The main negative is some of the departments keep changing their formats & some articles can be as little as one paragraph. But, on the whole it still is better than its competitors.

I only recently picked up on this magazine and so I feel behind the times. What is possibly ironic is that for the last couple of years I would pick up the occasional copy of Men's Health because I felt that I was finally getting up to date articles on FDA approved diets, foods, vitamins and other health related OTC drugs, as well as updated fitness routines. Thankfully the same information can be found and how it relates to a woman's system here.

I've also read the one and two star reviews of the magazine and the reviews that condemn this magazine and touted 'Shape' instead left me scratching my head. I had a subscription for several years to 'Shape' in college and ultimately turned my back on it as I found it to be superficial featuring a famous thin model/celebrity who was never particularly known for their athletic ability as the big selling point. It also bothered me that every other ad was for a magic diet pill/supplement that was eventually done away with after an expose on some news program listing a litany of problems.

A health magazine should be about health: getting it and keeping it and warn the public against a quick fix. I also like to see exercise and fitness emphasized more heavily than fashion. Which is exactly what I got here. Ultimately I want to be healthy and feel good for a long, long time. I also want to keep up to date on current methods for maintaining this goal. I really believe I get current and effective information and advice here. Other women's health/fitness magazines felt to me more like they were compeating with Cosmo and Glamour type magazines.

If you're looking at ordering this magazine because you've been reading your boyfriend's Men's Health, really enjoyed the work-out and health tips, and you said to yourself "Huh they make a version for women, I should order it." DON'T! Reading Women's Health is like reading Cosmo, filled with celebrities, causal language and make-up tips (not to mention advice for men probably gleaned from Men's Health so that you can surprise your boyfriend?). Don't waste your time on this vapid stuff.

Yankee (1-year auto-renewal)

Yankee magazine is a magazine that's over brimming with nostalgia.

Everything is New England quaint. I even like the advertisements of handmade jewelry and furniture.

The recipes are good. I really love the section that highlights a specific area or town and the most scenic routes. I like the pictures of houses and gardening and the regular columnist who identifies antiques.

I am feeling like a Maineiac ever since reading a description of a clock in someones' review.

You'll get a lot out of this magazine. Not one page goes to waste with me. I enjoy it from cover to cover.

Yankee has been around as long as I can remember. It's pages are full of wonderful New England stories, travel guides and photos. They have changed their format from a small magazine to the larger size, which I personally don't like as well. (the smaller size easily fit in a purse or tote) Their "Swap" section is a great read. Looking for real estate? Many homes are featured along with vacation properties. There are fiction stories and festival reviews. Makes a great gift for New England lovers.

Yankee is always interesting and always has something of interest to an old back woods yankee. It is always interesting to hear and see what is going on in neighboring states. Sometimes however, the income level is not in my range since our income is not what they make in Mass or other parts on Southern New England. I enjoy stories about the history. Sometime you come across history and no one knows that it is or was there, like old towns and farm steads.

I live in Texas but have always loved New England, and try to visit as often as I can. Yankee magazine is such a treat for anyone who loves the New England region, and is filled with interesting articles on New England travel (e.g. the beaches of South County); feature articles on the region's artists, local designers; food articles, and many more.

There are lots of beautiful photographs of the area, which is one of the reasons I love this magazine so much. The diversity, the rich heritage, and history of the area makes for such varied reading that there's always something to discover among the pages of Yankee. I love this magazine!

I had no idea that Yankee magazine would be renewed if I did take initiative to cancel it. I thought I was getting only the one year of the magazine that I ordered. There was no reminder. I DO NOT WANT the second year of the magazine but apparently I'm stuck with it. The only email I did get was not a reminder of renewal, but a statement telling me that I am renewed, like it or not. I tried to cancel the second year and I was told I couldn't because it was "shipped". Well the delivery date is September 30, 2013. If Amazon had honest business practices, they certainly would honor my request for something that would be delivered four months into the future. Amazon sent me a "we're sorry . . . " automatic email directing me to Synapse and they, in turn, directed me to Amazon with: Unfortunately, your request needs to be handled directly by Amazon." I loved using Amazon. But Amazon's business practices are getting pretty shaky.
