Old House Journal (1-year auto-renewal)

My house is 100 years old and it is under partially renovation. I thought I may be able to get some good ideas from this magazine. It is a very thin magazine with the same advertisements in each issue. I receive 3 issues at once, one current, the other 2 go back 4 months. I wasnt too happy about that either. So far, it is more decorating, less renovation. No before and after picture of projects that incorporate a totally new floor plan.

A must have for all "Do it yourselfers". Interesting articles and easy to understand project instructions.

Coping With Allergies & Asthma

Good information, but not a real "glossy" magazine. A little thin, I think (there's a lot more that could be included)

After reading the first couple of issues that I received, I did have some questions for my allergist.

Written for the lay person.

Neue Post

I'm writing on behalf of my mother who is getting the magazine. She is a German immigrant who just loves Neue Post. It has long been her only trusted authority for news, health and beauty tips, celebrities and whatnot. For years, a cousin in Germany used to mail her bundles of old issues after everyone in her household had read them. That cousin died a few years ago, and aside from losing her lifelong friend, my mother sorely missed getting her favorite magazine. She remarked on it every time her cousin came up in a conversation, so when I found out she could get a Neue Post subscription through Amazon, I gave her one for her birthday. She was overjoyed and couldn't wait for the deliveries to start. Fortunately, the magazine arrived two weeks earlier than promised and so far it has come promptly every week. My mother now looks forward to Mondays because that is when her Neue Post arrives. She is especially happy that she now gets the latest news from Germany when it is news, and not a month or so later after her relatives have finished looking it over. I don't think I've ever given her a present she has loved more than this. Thanks, Amazon, for giving her so much joy.

I got this for my parents who are from Germany. They like to keep up with what's going on in German tv, movies and music.

Heavy Metal - Option a

I am a longtime Heavy Metal fan, and I have every issue back to the first in 1977, though I did not begin reading the magazine until the mid-eighties. (I would have been too young earlier and would not have been allowed to read it since it is for adults.) The magazine features science fiction and fantasy graphic art and storytelling, several stories per issue. Over the years, I have fallen in love with the works of Frazetta, Manara, Royo, Moebius, Serpieri, and many others. As a fantasy writer myself, though not an artist, the work featured in Heavy Metal has been a constant source of inspiration and pleasure for me. If not for this magazine, I would never have been able to experience the creativity and talents of these great artist storytellers. Even now, it is difficult to find sources with this much variety and quality, especially since I don't have endless hours to surf the web looking for fantasy art and stories.

One of the most fascinating things about Heavy Metal is the artists' portrayal of women: Of course it goes without saying that most of the female characters of the stories are strong, independent, warrior types who wear very little clothing; but what is especially nice is the fact that most of them are not drawn as unrealistic, ultra-thin women like those featured in many magazines, television shows, and movies. Although clearly fantasy, the powerful women of Heavy Metal have the ability to make real women feel less self-conscious about their muscles and curves. If it weren't for the sexual content of the stories, I would say that these fantasy women would be good role models for girls because they would not contribute to problems such as poor self-image and anorexia. Rather, these fantasy women would inspire weightlifting, sword fighting, wrestling, and other athletics.

I don't believe the covers of Heavy Metal actually do justice to what is inside the magazines. The covers generally feature a pin-up pose of a female fantasy character, which does not give the reader much of an idea as to the quality of work these artists truly produce. The stories inside are original, exciting, meaningful, interesting, and sometimes even funny and quirky. The editors strive for both quality and variety, and the work is obviously carefully selected. I have never been disappointed with my subscription. (To the editors: "Nice job, and keep up the good work.") Each Heavy Metal issue includes work by true masters/legends of fantasy art, along with emerging talent.

Since the publisher only briefly mentions in their comment that this is an adult magazine, I would like to stress that the sexual content (stories, art, and advertising) makes this magazine inappropriate for younger readers.

If you know HM already, you know that it's not like other comic magazines. It has no fixed characters, artists, or story lines. Instead, each issue is a collection of illustrated stories, portfolios, and reviews of varied material.

That said, some artists (Suydam, Corbin, and lots of others) have been regulars here for decades. And yes, some stories do last from issue to issue. And yes, HM does have a consistent look to it: adventure/fantasy/SF, with a post-PG13 emphasis on fully inflated female figures. It's ideal for 14-year-old boys with inflamed if uninformed imaginations. It's not "adult" by any means, but advertises lots of videos, books, and magazines that are.

If you're serious about comics, you must pay attention to HM. I'm not saying you have to pay attention very often or even like it my own feelings are mixed. Still, the artwork is consistently good and you're likely to see the artists again elsewhere.

I do say though this magazine is for Adults eye's only. It has lots of Adult content. Well if you're looking for a Magazine that is described above, this is a keeper.

Oxford American

You can get a subscription for less directly from OA. The last issue (#53) was $4.95 in stores. The previous issue, an annual affair, was $10.00 in stores. Since they only have 4 issues per year, the sale price above is not a sale.

I never read the magazine all the way through, but I do skim most of the articles and read some of them. The reading material, both fiction and nonfiction, is unusual. "Quirky" fits the bill. In one fairly recent issue, I ran across a wonderful short story written as if it were a very badly composed term paper. It was quite funny, even if it was painful to read at times. I passed it around to several colleagues at the university where I teach & they got a kick out of it. Two nonfiction favorites were articles on (a) AIDS in rural Alabama and (b) an architecture professor at Auburn University whose students build unusual housing for the poor using readily available materials. The piece included photos of the housing.

I also really enjoy the annual music issue, which includes a CD. Every cut on the CD is accompanied by a short essay (roughly 2 pages) about the singer. Usually, the music issue will have a mix of a few well known singers singing less well known selections and several singers of whom I've never heard. I won't say that I like all the singers. That's not the point. Exposure to different styles is the point. I also usually discover a few singers that I like & would never have heard of otherwise.

This is a great magazine that deserves a bigger readership. It's only published quarterly but I bet the quality could remain the same if it were a monthly. The current issue, #55, has writing by Barry Hannah, Roy Blount Jr., and Sven Birkerts. Oxford American could become the "New Yorker" for people who hate the Northeast but love good writing. Or you could read both and get the best in American fiction and essays.

Cross Country Skier

The mag is not bad. It is only published in three issues a year. It seems to mainly focus on resorts. I would like it to focus a bit more on equipment, technique and on day-skiing sites (not just fly-to type resorts).

The editing could be tighter (spelling, grammer, puncuation). I subscribe to a sea-kayaking mag and the level of production seems a bit higher.

Gun Dog (1-year auto-renewal)

If you are a true gun dog enthusiast, Gun Dog is the magazine for you. The writing is some of the best I have read anywhere (including the N.Y. Times Magazine and Vanity Fair) and is replete with such beautifully crisp description that you feel as if you are there with the hunter. There are many do-it-yourself articles on such things as building dog boxes, ramps, etc., as well as training advice, and excellent gun reviews. Each issue spotlights an interesting gun dog breed and gives hunters as well as dog enthusiasts the low-down on both positive and negative aspects of the breed. The photos are absolutely gorgeous and border on art. I am always looking forward to the delivery of the next issue, and have been very pleased with its low price in comparison with some other "copy-cat" magazine-attempts like "The Pointing Dog" which are replete with advertising, and not much else! If you want to learn about bird-hunting or bird-dogs or just would enjoy the vicarious experience of the hunt and the pleasure of a good hunting dog, then this is the magazine for you!

This is my favorite magazine. Lots of articles on training, different breeds, etc. Advertisements for useful tools that you just can't find anywhere else. I picked up my first magazine off the shelf, and immediately bought a subscription. My subscription started the issue after my breed was featured and customer service sent me a back issue, no problem. There is also a forum and a facebook page dedicated to this magazine that has extra information on it.

Burda Moden - Russian Edition

That's a great magazine with great patterns. I've beenusing it for at least ten years already and I always get a lot of compliments on my clothes. Lve it!

What more is there to say? If you are buying this, you probably already love and trust this magazine. Not every issue is excellent, but all of them have a variety of styles and difficulties, so there is something for everyone. If I could make everything I have marked in my mom's Burda magazines over the last 2 years, I would never need to buy clothes again. The reason I am giving it 4 and not 5 stars is because their offerings for the plus-sized women are pretty unflattering as a rule I would put it at about 8 out of 10 that are frumpy and would make someone look like they are trying to (unsuccessfully) hide their bodies. Well-fitting clothes are a must for every size, right?

Additionally, Burda has a Health and a Food section in the back. The Health section tends to be fairly unoriginal and very Russian not completely grounded in fact and over-the-top. The Food section is pretty great, especially when they have desserts, but I would recommend really reading the recipe thoroughly before committing to it some of them have type-o's and other problems that will throw your recipe off-balance. I once made something with a pound and a half of cottage cheese instead of half a pound because of that whoops. Had I really thought about it, I should have been able to realize that this could not be correct, but this wasn't the only time their recipes were misleading.

Overall, this magazine is a staple for anyone who is interested in sewing and speaks Russian.

Casa Facile

I buy CASA FACILE for years on the stand in the INTERNATIONAL NEWS stores in NYC. Used to cost $2.50/issue until about 2 years ago when the price went up to $2.95, now it's $3.50. I do not see any deal in subscription for $5.70/issue, where is the saving?? Besides the high subscription price tag, there is nothing bad about CASA. It's a practical home improvement magazine with a load of good ideas for both interior design professional and a creative homeowner. Do not look for a traditional style in this magazine, it's 90% contemporary with an occasional article on antiques or style mix and match. Think Better Home and Garden Italian style. Quality of issues varies, but I gave it 4 stars anyway as some remodeling ideas I've got from this unassuming magazine brought me several returning customers.

Moment (1-year auto-renewal)

"Moment" is an excellent magazine. It discusses many various issues that concern the modern Jew; politics, culture and -of course -religion. Often the magazine will discuss controversial issues (with reader imput) so you can get the "scoop" on the latest debates.

I especially appreciate that fact that "Moment" does not take a specific position on issues; the magazine is very good at providing the viewpoint from the perspectives of all types of Jews.

I have read 'Moment' occasionally over many years, and this in the hope of enriching my knowledge of the Jewish world. There have been articles and features which I have found useful. But on the whole the Magazine does not seem to me to be in a class with 'Commentary' or even 'Midstream'. I would say my reaction to it has been by and large lukewarm. I also believe it could be much more forthright and positive in regard to Israel.

I look to Moment Magazine to get a sense of Jewish issues. They offer a wide range of articles about Jewish politics, culture, and religion. Moment makes Jewish life exciting, and always finds quirky angles. They also offer an excellent range of viewpoints on all these topics. Particularly on Israel, they are able to convey the complexities of the state with all its strengths and problems.

RC Driver (1-year auto-renewal)

This is a well balanced magazine with great reviews that are accurate and not just rehashes of a press release like other, not to be named, publications that produce magazines that are more like advertising catalogs! You can not go wrong with RC Driver!

I'm recently getting back in to RC cars, and figured the best way to catch up was to grab a couple of magazines.

Between RC Driver and Radio Control Car Action, I have to say that RC Driver is the publication that isn't geared toward tween boys. It's almost like the difference between Car and Driver and Maxim, except that Maxim usually doesn't have as many errors in grammar and spelling.

RC Driver offers thoughtful reviews on new products, as well as useful tips that anybody can use (this month, for example, it's how to paint your own designs on Lexan bodies). It isn't as OMG IN YOUR FACE XTREEM CUSTOMZ RC 4 LYFE!!!1! as Radio Control Car Action seems to be.

It's also a pretty decent deal on auto-renew, if you don't know someone who wants to do the buy-one-get-one promo that they advertise in the magazine.
