International Figure Skating

International Figure SkatingInternational Figure Skating has articles on past, present, and future skaters from all countries, but mainly the U.S., Canada, Russia, the U.K. and Asia. It was recently taken over by a new publisher who has made a few changes, mainly changing the focus from short paragraphs about skaters to longer, detailed articles. Other changes include a listing of web pages featuring skaters, articles aimed at skating students, and movies, television and books about skating. Remaining as features are results from competitions and a long article each issue on a featured skaters. The pictures are well done.

International Figure Skating is a good read for figure skating fans.

IFS gives the most up-to-date info on the sport's current and former champions as well as the up-and-comers. An excellent overview of the championship and professional circuit with stylish photos, this is THE magazine for fans.

Bottom line, this magazine is for people who are up-to-date with big skating names and who are interested in their acheivements. It is full of pictures and interviews. My advice is thisif you trully are interested in the sport and the stars, subscribe. But if you're only interested in how to land your double axel, this magazine won't help too much.

I was looking for a magazine with interesting, informative, enlightening content. I didn't find it in this publication and you won't either. I won't be renewing my subscription and that's the real indication of the lack of value in this magazine.

Although raised in sunny Cuba I learned how to skate in that country at age 6 and have been an avid figure skating fan ever since. I had the good fortune of meeting Sonja Henie, in Cuba, as a child when she skated there in 1952.

It took me years to locate a magazine on figure skating, but finally located and subscribed to IFS. I have been a subscriber for over ten years.

Although it went through a recent change in ownership, it only became better, offering the reader now a section on books, videos and television times which I have found very helpful.

The articles are, indeed, international in scope and offer good coverage of current events as well as what has turned out to be very good glimpses of future stars. I read my issues cover to cover and that never changes. The interviews are well documented, and the graphics are beautifully laid out. I hope others can share in my enthusiasm for this fine publication.

Taste of the South

Taste of the SouthI saw this magazine when I was on vacation in the south and subscribed immediately when I got home. I've yet to run into a bad recipe from this magazine. It reminds me of what Southern Living used to be before they changed it. A bit pricey, but you'll keep every dog-eared copy.

Three years later: As the original review below says, I loved this magazine at first. I bought all the available back issues and subscribed for three years. I did not resubscribe when the last subscription expired. Unfortunately, to me, the editors are offering fewer recipes in each issue and have increased the "travel" and "restaurant review" aspect. There also seems to be increased advertising in the magazine. I don't mind ads in magazines, I know that's what subsidizes the printing, etc. I don't want pages and pages about a restaurant in a distant city with a couple of their recipes. I don't want a travelogue. I don't want more advertisements than recipes, particularly ads for products that aren't even available in my area. I want recipes. That's what it's all about for me. The recipes.

I purchased a copy of this magazine at Sam's club, made the coconut pie featured on the cover, and I am sold on this magazine. I have since purchased a subscription from Amazon, and received the latest issue. These are usable recipes for ordinary people. No exotic ingredients (well the first issue required a cola drink available only in parts of the South but I made a couple of recipes substituting Coca Cola!), easy to follow recipes, and my husband LOVES that coconut pie recipe! Too, I've never successfully made my own pie crusts; used a recipe from that first issue and the crust recipe is better than excellent. I'm still not a pretty pie crust maker, but they sure taste good. You won't be disappointed if you like regular food.

Vanity Fair (1-year auto-renewal)

Vanity FairYou can renew your Vanity Fair subscription at a rate of 24 issues for $20, if you do so on Vanity Fair's website.

Amazon, on the other change, charges a renewal rate of $19.99 for only 12 issues.

What's with the markup, Amazon?

I've been reading Vanity Fair for around 12 years. One thing I will never understand is the subscription price. Each month my magazine comes and is filled with $12 slips for a one year subscription. Then my renewal notice rolls around and they offer me the "Low, Low price for subscribers of only $16 dollars a year."

Do they think I am so stupid that I can not open my magazine and see that the going yearly rate is $12? It kills me. Every single year this happens. I can't take a bath and read this mag and not be showered with the $12 notices so I always let my subscription lapse and renew with one of the $12 cards. I enjoy reading the magazine a lot but I always feel insulted when it comes time to renew.

Hard to find a good article in VF. It takes a few minutes to skim through unless they have a good article like the one on Truman Capote an issue or two back. Vanity Fair does publish great articles, but it's hit or miss each month.

I bought the Angelina Jolie issue in store and skimmed through the magazine. At the time I thought it was a pretty good magazine despite all the ads. Fast forward a few months and I now realize I have a magazine subscription to a boring magazine. Each month the mag is full of ads, I don't really enjoy the substance in it or the writing style. I think I got in over my head on this one. To each their own though.

I just turned 50. I think I began reading Vanity Fair in my early 20s. No magazine has been as interesting and educational, to me, as Vanity Fair has. The detail and research that the writers put into the articles is amazing. But-for this magazine, I wouldn't know a fraction of what's out there going on in our world. It's simply a fascinating magazine with such an incredibly broad range of topics to dive into. I could go on and on but, truly, Vanity Fair is "it" for me. I love sappy mags such as People and US Weekly and they have their place in our home for entertainment purposes. Vanity Fair does entertain me but it also makes me think. I will never not subscribe to this mag and I'm on here today to process a renewal. And, besides, magazines these days are so affordable, try it and if you don't like it donate them to your doctor's office or hair salon, etc...

Model Boats

Model BoatsI'm into RC boats-I like serious scale models, fun scale models, Springer tugs, and sailboats. Wind, electric, or steam power is what I want. I have no interest in nitro powered race boats.

I find that this is the best model boating magazine out there-it fits my interests most closely. (Marine Modelling International is a close second, though.)

I also like that they include several free plans over the course of a year, by great designers like Glynn Guest.

Jewish Currents

Jewish CurrentsJewish Currents is a progressive, secular Jewish bimonthly magazine that carries on the insurgent tradition of the Jewish left through independent journalism, political commentary, and a "countercultural" approach to Jewish arts and literature. Now in its 57th year of publication, J.C. is undergoing a revival and expansion under the leadership of its new editor, Lawrence Bush, whose new column, "Religion and Skepticism," contends playfully with many manifestations of the "spirituality" of contemporary American culture. Other regular columns include "Jewish Women Now," "It Happened in Israel," "Inside the Jewish Community," "Our Secular Jewish Heritage," "Around the World," and "Mameloshn: Yiddish Poetry." The magazine is unique among Jewish publications in its historical awareness, its commitment to diversity and democracy in Jewish life, its readiness to publish fiction and poetry, and the independence and unpretentiousness of its voice. (taken from Jewish Currents website)

Here in North Carolina, Jewish Currents is a life line to Jewish progressive thought. Over the years it has become a full-fleshed, inclusive magazine, well worth the subscription.

Fly RC (1-year auto-renewal)

Fly RCIt is a good RC publication. It varies reviews on both Nitro & Electric airplanes.

This is one of the best magazines out there for the RC pilot. They have excellent reviews and articles are fresh, interesting and accurate. I'm a charter subscriber and I'm glad I took a chance on them early on. I also subscribe to the other magazines and they aren't nearly as good. Of course, don't take my word for it or any one elses. Go to your local bookstore, pick up a copy and flip through it. You'll discover an opinion for yourself, which is what really matters.

This is a good magazine, a lot of banners, but still good. My friend Moris Beracha who is a RC Sailplanes Champion here in California recommend me. Go for it.

Cosmopolitan - German Edition

Cosmopolitan - German EditionThis magazine is similar to the US edition in that it has similar sections and categories, but is just made for Germany. It's great for the cosmopolitan women who enjoy reading articles about fashion, careers, love, and beauty among other topics.

Cross Country Skier

Cross Country SkierThe mag is not bad. It is only published in three issues a year. It seems to mainly focus on resorts. I would like it to focus a bit more on equipment, technique and on day-skiing sites (not just fly-to type resorts).

The editing could be tighter (spelling, grammer, puncuation). I subscribe to a sea-kayaking mag and the level of production seems a bit higher.

Charlotte Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Charlotte MagazineCharlotte Magazine has improved greatly during the 4 years I've lived in Charlotte. My impression 4 years ago was that the articles didn't have much depth and covered the local area with an almost marketing like view of Charlotte (everything's great here!). It just didn't present balanced and critical content as you would find in a great city magazine such as the Washingtonian. Fortunately, during the last 4 years the magazine has improved and now the articles have depth and demonstrate critical thinking and balanced views; which you won't find in the shallow and barely literate Charlotte Observer. The still have a little way to go, but they've made great progress in the quality of the publication, which is why I subscribed. The "event's" section is good for mainstream actives and covers quite a large number of events. Their coverage of unique, local retail shops and restaurants is also very good. If you live in Charlotte or plan to move here, I recommend you subscribe.

I only gave the magazine 4-stars because I wasn't sure what constituted a 5-star magazine. I bought the magazine because I am interested in learning about Charlotte and the State of North Carolina in general. For that, the magazine is great. Plenty of articles of information, and the pictures are fantastic. This is a very high quality magazine and if you're interested in learning about the culture of Charlotte, this is a great place to start. I've only had one issue delivered so far, but it was chock full of info, including a listing of DRs. in the are that you might need. Of course, the emphasis is on "what to do and see in Charlotte", but the magazine goes way deeper than that and provided just about everything you need to learn about the area.
