Slimming World

Slimming WorldThis is a great magazine that explains how the Slimming World program works, provides yummy recipes, and presents real-life success stories that are truly inspiring. Some of them are just about unbelievable. The articles are great, relevant.. and are presented in a compassionate way that so many other weight-loss and fitness magazines lack.

I've been on this program for three weeks... and have even cheated terribly several times (only one... possibly two meals a week). This was only because I was out with family and couldn't get food the way I wanted. That being said, I literally STUFF MY FACE with food the rest of the time. I'm a food-noshing MACHINE!! Ready for this?? I know it's not typical (most lose 2-3/wk), but I've lost 18 pounds in 3 weeks!! I'm sure that's partially because I have so much to lose (over 100 pounds), and because the times I didn't cheat, I followed the plan very closely. Honestly, it's not hard to follow, and because so many foods are unlimited (yes... I said UNLIMITED) I'm always satisfied.

No foolin'... this is the EASIEST, most effective thing I've ever tried. I have friends on other plans, but I want to slap my forehead when I see all the point-counting, carb counting and calorie counting they have to do.

It's taught me a liberating truth, folks... FOOD IS NOT THE ENEMY. It's the way we've learned to prepare it and cover it with fat and sugar-laden condiments that's the enemy. Many sauces you can make from fat-free plain yogurt, fat-free cottage cheese, and fat-free sour cream. After a couple weeks of eating that way, the heavy stuff (the way most of America prepares it) tastes.... icky. Gives me a tummy ache.

I was considering lap band before I found this... and I'm thanking God a friend turned me on to this. It's changed my life already!! This program is the light that leads to the end of a long, lonely tunnel. There are people all along the way, cheering you on. It doesn't get any better than this!

Record Collector - London England

Record Collector - London EnglandThis is the type ogf magazine that along with Mojo make all others pale in comparison.

Record Collector gives such brilliant reviews of albums, run downs on the entire output sand releases of bands.

It truly gets you excited about music and wanting if not lusting to hear so many of the albums that they review.

They look at all musical styles and thi slack of bias should be a great hook for all music lovers.

The articles which are the main ones concentrate solely on one act,and will if necessary take it through four or five issues to give an accurate account of the band's history, musical output, members, what they are doing now,how they formed etc etc.

This is a truly indispensable magazine.

I have no complaints but for the fact i cannot afford to buy it,and find it hard to track down in the U.S.A.

Also if you begin collecting your house will be overun quickly as throwing out one of these magazines feel slike tearing out a piece of your soul.

I am extremely happy to fin that I can order the Record Collector-London England, Magazine through your website.

Coping With Allergies & Asthma

Coping With Allergies & AsthmaGood information, but not a real "glossy" magazine. A little thin, I think (there's a lot more that could be included)

After reading the first couple of issues that I received, I did have some questions for my allergist.

Written for the lay person.

Wish it came out more frequently.

Logic Lovers Logic Problems

Logic Lovers Logic ProblemsLogic problem books are hard to find at this point. So was thrilled to find this product! It arrived sooner than stated (there was a several month wait for the subscrition to start, and it started within one month). If you like puzzles, you should try logic problems. Very fun for the brain.

I love getting a new logic problem magazine every couple of months. These vary in difficulty and each one contains instructions in the beginning so even newbies can start. It's relaxing and a great way to unwind without technology. Sharpen a pencil, sharpen your mind.

National Observer Book of Crosswords

National Observer Book of CrosswordsAlthough it may not have the cachet of the New York Times, the National Oberver Book of Crosswords are consistently challenging. I was pleasantly surprised at their high quality and would highly recommend them for the crossword enthusiast!

This is for anyone who likes a crossword challenge. I have subscribed for over ten years.

If you like themed puzzles on the harder side of the street, you will adore these. I love harder puzzles with themes and these are some of the best I have ever done. If you don't know, you should check out what the US version of the National Observer was. It was an actual publication created by the man who started the The Wall Street Journal and was in existence from 1962 to 1977. I would love to find a copy in some library on microfiche. But, I digress.

There are a total of 70 crosswords in each issue and from puzzle 31-70, the puzzles are the larger, Sunday-type version. The man who edits the publication, Mr. Preston, seems to take great care because the selections are varied, delightful and enjoyable. I also like the fact that Kappa Publishing takes great care to eliminate any errors even in the headers and footers. I'm sure he has a lot of help in doing this, too. But, it's obvious, that the company cares about every detail.

The books are digest-size so you could carry in your backpack, purse or other bag, which is cool for the train or something. Something I appreciate, too, is the fact that the books do not crumble after a lot of abuse in terms of falling apart from the spine. The spine is pliable because unlike any crossword magazines I've ever worked, you can open a page, move it around a bit and the book lays flat. To me, that's a great asset. The paper is akin to a slightly heavier newspaper, so your pencil or pen glides quite smoothly. I use erasable ink pens for my crosswords and the paper is awesome with these.

There's not much of a discount here at Amazon for a subscription, so frankly I would plunk down the extra bucks to start getting the subscription faster. It's ridiculous to wait months when you have paid for it. Mail the coupon inside one of the books or just go to the Kappa company website and order online directly.

I hope everyone enjoys solving these crosswords!

I can rarely complete one of these, but I love the challenge. It is a good mix of fairly easy, fairly difficult, and totally impossible puzzles.

Want National Observer Book of Crosswords Discount?

I have been a fan of National Observer crossword puzzles for years. The puzzles range from fairly easy to challenging. However, over the past couple years I have noticed a lot of errors in the publication and think that if there is one place there should be zero errors, it is in a crossword puzzle book. This drives me crazy. I have been tempted to call and apply for the job of proofreader! Another complaint I have is that too many of the puzzles are becoming "cutesy". They are not straight crossword puzzles but puzzles that, say, require you to leave out certain letters, or insert Roman numerals for letters,or have some other sort of twist. I realize that some people may enjoy this, but I just want the straight crosswords. Also, and this probably isn't the case in fact, but sometimes I get the feeling the puzzles must be fairly old, because many of the answers probably would completely elude anyone under the age of forty, which, unfortunately, I am not. Despite these flaws, this is still the best crossword puzzle publication on the market. I am giving it only four stars because of the first two issues addressed above.

Ships Monthly

Ships MonthlyThis is the best general magazine dealing with ships that I have seen. I have been a subscriber since 1974, and unlike many publications, it has significantly improved with time. All contemporary ships are illistrated with color photographs, most of which are sufficitly large to provide a good view. Many of the historical photos are also in color; however, good quality black and white ones are provided for those subjects that preceded color photography.

A reasonable variety of topics are covered; although the emphasis is on Europe. There are also occasional features on U. S. subjects. My only complaint is that passenger ships tend to receive more than what I consider to be the space they deserve, thereby short-changing the great variety of other fascinating ships, both military and commercial. The articles are well-written, and the authors appear to be knowledgeable with respect to their subjects. In a number of cases, I wished the articles were longer because they were so good, and I wanted to read more.

Given that Europe is currently the world's center of maritime technology and innovation, the Euro-centric slant of the magazine is a stength. I highly recommend SHIPS MONTHLY to anyone with more than a casual interest in ships and shipping.

Ships Monthly as the title indicates is a monthly magazine devoted to ships and shipping, both contemporary and historical. It is publsihed in the U.K. where the hobby of shipspotting, ship photography and historical research on ships is far more advanced than in the U.S. Given its British and continental audience, the magazine is oriented to the U.K. and western Europe. A typical issue will have the latest news on ferries (quite a popular subject in the U.K.), waterfront news, cruise ships, cargo ships, naval vessels and tugs. Following those pages, illustrated with color photos, there is usually a feature on ships of the past with an emphasis on passenger liners. There is often an article or two on naval issues, both historical and contemporary. Sometimes there is a very useful and long article on a major port with an emphasis on where one may access the water and take photographs. There usually is an article about some aspect of contemporary shipping. Rounding out the issue are regular columns including an interview with a ship's captain, historical photos, inquiries, letters, and the like. Also quite useful to this reviewer are the numerous advertisements from publishers and retailers of maritime books--most of the books advertised are not listed on Amazon. Despite the expense to those of us in the U.S., this magazine is HIGHLY recommend for anyone that has a serious and deep interest in shipping, both past and present. The British and European emphasis can be irritating and your favorite subject might not be included, but there is a complete void of this genre of magazine in the U.S. Highly recommended by this review who is admittedly a very hardcore ship fan--I would not want to be without it. If you are merely curious about shipping you may want to stick with the internet (such as and if you are a certified ship addict then Ships Monthly is for you.

Fitness (1-year)

FitnessI bought my very first copy of fitness, intrigued by the contraddicting viewpoints. Personally, I like it. It's rare for me to find a magazine that has it all, most women magazines are either too shallow (only fashion and makeup) or too "homey" (cooking, house decorating, Martha Stewart style). I am 25, so I like fashion news and makeup suggestions, but because I am also married and have a child, I am interested in recipes and health. Additionally, I like to keep in shape so I like to keep informed on the latest great fitness videos and workouts. And to keep in shape, you always need some motivation, and the success stories featured in the mag are of great help. This magazine has it all. And that's why "Fitness" is probably not the peftect title, but more like "Women's Best" or something, unless there is already a magazine with this title!

But afterall, who cares? The title doesn't really matter, what matters is the content, and this magazine's content is good.

I read Fitness for the first time about a year and a half ago... and I liked it. So I subscribed to it for two years. Well, a year into it, I've decided it's just not for me. See, if you're like me, wanting to gain something out of reading a fitness magazine involves knowledge of how the muscles work, when to work them, what nutrients are best for them, and basic health, because let's face it ladies, even if you DON'T have a degree in biology, you know losing weight and staying healthy involves a lot more than a fashionable pair of hot pants or just a few crunches. You have to understand your body each person requires different exercises and different diets (by which I mean different types of foods, not an actual act of dieting) in order to look their best. So, if you want to gain the education you REALLY need to lose weight or stay healthy, Fitness isn't what you need. They've got great ads for great fashions and great UNREALISTIC looking exercise models (who personally don't have "perfect abs" or "sexy arms" they look like size 4 girls that haven't lifted a weight since high school gym class). A magazine like Fitness Rx is LOADED with information and women who look like they really work for what they look like something we all have to do in order keep our figures.

Buy Fitness (1-year) Now

I subscribed to this magazine for a year and found it a waste of money. Every issue has a girl in a bikini on the front (can't a woman look sexy in anything but?) And every issue claims to have "the best ever exercise for...." ok..what about the last 10 issues that claimed to have the same thing..those exercises are no longer "best ever?" I didn't like the fashion sections, and I also don't like how there really aren't any articles. When I subscribe to a magazine I'd like to be able to read it, not just look at pictures. The only thing I liked about it were the success stories..and even those seemed repetitive...are we only allowed fruit and grilled chicken??

FITNESS helps give good, solid workout and diet ideas that are realistic to my busy life. But unlike the rest of the health and diet mags out there, FITNESS does not motivate you through there articles and then bombard you with a ton of ads for Chocolate Cherry Pies and "recipes that can clog your arteries in 5 minutes". Instead, FITNESS really stays true to the reader. They provide instruction and motivation along side of advertisements that support a healthy lifestyle!

Want Fitness (1-year) Discount?

I've gone through nearly every fitness genre magazine and found this one to really focus on it's namesake. With new exercise tips each issue and focus on both whole body conditioning and isolation techniques, there are great tips for people at just about every fitness level. there's also some nice fashion and style sections, but they don't bombard the mag. The cooking section is more than I can do, but the option is great. This mag covers just about everything to get you in shape and looking good-I highly recommend!!

Fruits - Japan

Fruits - JapanDon't purchase subscriptions from Amazon or Magazine Express.

The following are my experiences with a subscription to Hiragana Times from Amazon.

This page doesn't tell you is that the Japanese magazines subscribed to on Amazon and filled by a company called Magazine Express are shipped SEAMAIL from Japan which mean you'll recieve every issue 8 to 10 after it's released.

I placed my order in January and it to date have not recieved a single issue. After several phone calls, the Magazine Express people (who fill the Amazon subscriptions) said they had to restart my subscription for the May issues which will take 8-10 weeks due to shipping issues. So after ordering in January, I will not receive a single issue of this uncancelable magazine until possibly in late July. Very poor service.

This is unacceptable for a magazine that most US Japanese bookstores can get within a week or that you can order directly from the publisher for ony a few dollars more. If I had known the shipping policy I would not have ordered and the magazine supplier, Magazine Express will not cancel the subscrition.

I advise avoiding ALL Amazon magazine subsriptions due to their poorly stated policies.

**Update, I wrote this review in June. It is now July 8th and I've just been informed I must wait until August 15th to see if an issue arrives. I ordered the magazine on January 9th and I have had no resolution from either Magazine Express or Amazon who provides no way to contact anyone within Amazon about magazine orders. I reiterate, buying magazines from Amazon if a poor idea.

This is a great magazine---to get once. Maybe twice. Each page features 1-2 people in their hip fashions. But the stuff...it isn't that spectacular. After so many pages of the same type of fashion, involving long jackets and clothes-over-clothes, high boots or knee-high socks, you feel that it doesn't really matter anymore.

If you are REALLY into fashion, and the punk style in particular, then this is fitting. If you want it because you have a love for Japan or fashion is just a thing that you do, then it isn't worth the price for all of them.
