Slimming World

Slimming WorldThis is a great magazine that explains how the Slimming World program works, provides yummy recipes, and presents real-life success stories that are truly inspiring. Some of them are just about unbelievable. The articles are great, relevant.. and are presented in a compassionate way that so many other weight-loss and fitness magazines lack.

I've been on this program for three weeks... and have even cheated terribly several times (only one... possibly two meals a week). This was only because I was out with family and couldn't get food the way I wanted. That being said, I literally STUFF MY FACE with food the rest of the time. I'm a food-noshing MACHINE!! Ready for this?? I know it's not typical (most lose 2-3/wk), but I've lost 18 pounds in 3 weeks!! I'm sure that's partially because I have so much to lose (over 100 pounds), and because the times I didn't cheat, I followed the plan very closely. Honestly, it's not hard to follow, and because so many foods are unlimited (yes... I said UNLIMITED) I'm always satisfied.

No foolin'... this is the EASIEST, most effective thing I've ever tried. I have friends on other plans, but I want to slap my forehead when I see all the point-counting, carb counting and calorie counting they have to do.

It's taught me a liberating truth, folks... FOOD IS NOT THE ENEMY. It's the way we've learned to prepare it and cover it with fat and sugar-laden condiments that's the enemy. Many sauces you can make from fat-free plain yogurt, fat-free cottage cheese, and fat-free sour cream. After a couple weeks of eating that way, the heavy stuff (the way most of America prepares it) tastes.... icky. Gives me a tummy ache.

I was considering lap band before I found this... and I'm thanking God a friend turned me on to this. It's changed my life already!! This program is the light that leads to the end of a long, lonely tunnel. There are people all along the way, cheering you on. It doesn't get any better than this!

International Record Review

International Record ReviewI would endorse everything that is said by below by J Scott Morrison. "International Record Review", while obviously based on "Gramophone" magazine (it shares the general format and some of the same reviewers), has addressed most of "Gramophone"'s egregious faults.

1. There is far more space devoted to actual reviews of classical recordings (the primary purpose of both magazines), and far more CDs actually get reviewed.

2. Reviewers are not exclusively U.K.-based

3. The choice of recordings to review sems less constrained by advertising considerations.

4. More reviews of reissues of historical recordings.

5. No section on audio equipment (Gramophone's paltry and inadequate audio equipment reviews are obviously inserted to get advertising dollars from audio manufacturers) -a subject which demands and deserves its own periodical.

All in all, this is probably your best bet if you want to subscribe to a classical music magazine

This glossy British classical music magazine that focuses primarily on recordings was founded in 2000 by, I believe, some disgruntled former 'Gramophone' writers. The staff of writers include such well-known reviewers as Martin Anderson, Hugh Canning, Jed Distler, Mortimer H. Frank, Harris Goldsmith, Julian Haylock, Simon Heighes, Robert Layton, Donald Manildi, Andrew Porter, Charles Timbrell, Raymond S. Tuttle, John Warrack and others. As you can see, the writers primarily come from England but there are far more American reviewers than write for 'Gramophone,' giving it a bit more trans-Atlantic balance than the older magazine. It is, as they say, 'for those who know their music but who are prepared to be further enlightened, appreciate good sound-reproduction, without the need for gimmicks and who want up-to-date, authoritative comment on the vast number of new and historical classical recordings being released worldwide.' There are monthly review sections for orchestral, chamber, instrumental, choral, vocal and opera CDs as well as for DVDs and books. Issues also contain

A frank, topical and pertinent editorial

An extensive and detailed Index to the reviews

Letters to the Editor

A list of new international releases

News pages and obituaries

Special extensive features on major repertoire (with exhaustive comparisons of extant recordings)

A Directory of record company websites

There are no sections dealing with sound reproduction or new electronic gadgets. One plus is that there is a good deal of attention paid to historical recordings. For instance, in a recent issue there was an extensive section about historical opera re-issues.

The writing is generally both graceful and informed. It is rare that I don't learn a good deal from an issue, and I tend to read every word of every article. The only drawback for American subscribers (and the reason I've awarded only 4 stars) is that, with the currently disadvantageous exchange rate for the US dollar against the British pound, it is a bit expensive. I, however, would not like to be without it.

I hope this description helps prospective subscribers decide whether this is their cup of tea.

Ocean Navigator

Ocean NavigatorI just got a subscription and paid $35 for it as opposed to the now price of $25. My bad for not waiting, but what worries me is that when I checked my subscriptions it shows that first copy delivery date is unknown as the publisher cannot guarrantee when the next copy will be produced. This would indicate to me that the publisher is on the edge of shutting down the magazine or it might be a very sporadic issue at best. In the notes it says that this information is on the web page but I checked and nothing is mentioned there to indicate that the magazine may or may not be printed and will have an irregular schedule. This is rather annoying since it is a fairly expensive one. Secondly, unlike other sailing magazines that I get there is no option to cancel or get a refund so let the buyer beware. I will withhold further judgement until I actually get a copy and will post when I do. Hope this helps others, especialy those looking at buying a subscription as a gift for someone.

Spirituality & Health

Spirituality & HealthSpirituality and Health is a bi-monthly magazine that reports on the ideas, the people, and the practices of the current spiritual renaissance.

Featuring reviews of books, DVD's, and music, as well as lively columns and interviews, Spiritual and Health Magazine explores the mind/body connection, healing, spiritual practice, science, psychology, and more.

Here is a sample of some of the articles featured in this magazine:

*Socrates' Seven Spiritual Principles

*The Healing Power of Doing Good: The New Science of Volunteering

*The Standford Forgivness Project

*Qi Vs. Cancer

*Lessons From Mindful Corporations.

*Recovering From Infidelity

*Classic Hymns Cut Through Dementia

*Spiritual Literacy in Wartime

*How Plants May Explain the Intelligence of Ants

Magazine departments include book and movie reviews, gorgeous art and photographic galleries, beliefs from all walks of life and faiths, commentary by Thomas Moore, and more. One of my favorite sections is What Goes On In There, Really? which examines different worship practices. They have profiled experiences like a Pentecostal Christian service, Dances of Universal Peace, Maundy Thursday in Baghdad, Friday Night Shabbat Service, Siddha Yoga Meditation Ashram, and Spotting Elves in Iceland.

I've been a subscriber for several years now, and once I sit down to begin reading Spiritual and Health Magazine, it's hard to get up! You never feel like you're preached at; rather, this magazine offers gentle observations on contemporary culture, ancient wisdom, science, healing, personal growth, new discoveries, and spirituality--with breathtaking color photographs placed throughout. This magazine is truly a visual feast, as well as food for the soul.

I picked up a copy of Spirituality & Health a couple of years ago at a bookstore and sent in the subscription card right away. This magazine is wonderful if you're looking for a magazine devoted to putting a spiritual perspective on life. This magazine covers everything; mind, body, and spirit, the total package. In the back there are also listings of upcoming events that the spiritually inclined may be interested in. I highly recommend this magazine, as I always catch myself saying to someone, "I just read this awesome article in Spirituality & Health..."

After been loaned this issue of June 2004, by a committed, really

genuine Episcopalian, I was greatly impressed! These creative, unique articles captured my Imagination: "What is Power?" by Sam Keen; "Taking the First Step" by Anna Lappe`; "Accessing Sacred Energy," by Judith Orloff, MD; "The Making of a Chaplain" By Karen O'Brien (So like the pages of my earlier Verbatim in CPE).

"The Best Spiritual Books" are reviews of 50 out of 300 books by Fred and Mary Ann Brussat! We surely agreed on the first few named: "The Heart of Christianity" Marcus Borg; "Beyond Belief" Elaine Pagels; "The Wisdom Way of Knowing" Cynthia Bourgeault; ++

"The Lord is My Shepherd" Rabbi Kushner+ "The Power of Patience" by M J Ryan!

I am still in the whirlwind of those emotionally stimulating, artistically written articles on varied yet potent topics of food for Thought and Reflection. Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

This magazine is, in my opinion, well thought out. The articles are interesting, relevant and well-written. Good photography. Quality paper. I enjoy reading it and look forward to reading it. Of all the magazines in our waiting room, more patients have had positive remarks on this magazine than any other. I just re-subscribed for my second year and quite pleased. Highly recommend.

Runner's World (1-year auto-renewal)

Runner's WorldJust an all-around great runner's magazine. Who's it for? Anyone who likes to run, from beginner to advanced, casual to professional. Here's a few things you'll find inside:

-equipment reviews (i.e. evaluations of the latest shoes)

-training techniques (tips from the pros)

-info about races (national as well as international)

-inspiring stories (to boost your motivation)

-nutrition info (tips to lose weight and boost performance)

A very well rounded running magazine with great information, I highly recommend it. Also for runners: Treat Your Own Achilles Tendinitis if you have tendinitis that is affecting your running.

I've been reading Runner's World for about three years now. It seems that whenever my motivation hits an all time low another magazine will end up in my mailbox. After reading half of the magazine I am forced to put on my running shoes and hit the streets.

There are many educational benefits I receive from these magazines. I enjoy their training tips to help me improve my running time. I enjoy their list of races in the back of issue so I can plan what I want to run next in my geographic area.

Most importantly, I highly appreciate the safety tips that are included. Running can be very hard on your body, as most of my cross country team learned in high school. This should become standard reading for high school students. I wish my coach had gone through an issue every month with us, highlighting how to run safely while diminishing run times.

If you run, get this magazine. If you don't run but would like to, visit their educational web page to get an idea how to start and then subcribe to the magazine so, like me, you are reminded to get off your duff and hit the streets.

I've been reading Runner's World for several years now but I am going to stop. Month after month I'll look at the cover and get excited about an "article" they say is included in the issue, only to locate the "article" and find it is no more than either a fluff piece of information that must be targeted toward someone who has never ran so much as a city block in their life, or it is a three sentence answer to a reader's question that was sent in. Do these actually count as in depth pieces that warrant advertisement on the cover?

Furthermore, every issue is the same. There will be an article on losing five lbs. by the holidays/summer/race season whatever month the issue happens to come out. There will be a shoe review (blah!). There will be a "Fifty Ways To Stay Motivated" piece which is always the same commonsensical tips. And there will be a "Special Woman's Section" which, when it shows up every single month, makes me wonder just how "special" it could really be.

Once in a while there will be a good recipe, or a decent (but way too short) article on a runner. However, you could save alot of money by only purchasing one issue of this magazine because, except for the pictures and graphics, all the articles will be pretty much the same month after month.

Hardcore runners will read "Runner's World" because they have to. It popularizes the sport, and brings newcomers 'up to speed' about issues and techniques important to them, as well as clues them in on who is who out on the road. a great magazine, except I simply prefer the depth of training and racing issues "Running Times" provides a bit more. Really... I wish I could've given this magazine a 3.9.

Running is a funky subculture, and "Runner's World" defines and educates that culture.

Since the late George Sheehan wrote his famous column that emphasized running as spiritual endeavor, "Runner's World" has taken on an Oprah Winfrey/Deepak Chopra sort of generalist running philosophy. That's not all bad, as I think the magazine thoroughly encourages fitness through running.

It isn't all fluff. There is plenty for the more avid runner to soak up. The avid runner will find their marathon coverage, especially Boston and New York, impressive.

Their running shoes review is what any runner will benefit from. It details every aspect of what makes a great shoe, almost to the point of parody. However, parody or not, their analysis will help you buy the shoe you need for your foot for your distance in your environment.

Buy a subscription to "Runner's World," lace up, and get out on a run!

I fully recommend "Runner's World."

Being an infrequent runner and trying to get back into shape for the Baltimore marathon this year, Runner's World is indispensible. A number of the articles are encouraging and help me with training, diet, etc. The equipment reviews make me salivate (I wish I could afford one of the Garmin training watches), but in all it's a great magazine. I highly recommend it!

Kiki

KikiI picked this magazine up at our local craft store for my daughter who is 13. She has been asking for some magazines to look through for "fashion" and inspiration. The regular magazines that are widely available are either too "old" for her or too barbie-doll for my tastes. This is the exception! I know the magazine business is a tough business to be in, but I hope this one continues to flourish. Great inspiring stories from real young people...fashion that is more about personal style then what's popular or trendy...great art, information, and even drawing and journaling prompts. There were even some funky art/craft projects that we could work on together. I will be ordering a subscription for her for Christmas. Really a great find. Thank you!

Bought this magazine for my 9 year old daughter who loves fashion, art, and creativity. What she loves about Kiki is learning about the fashion world, the crafts, profiles of cities around the world all wrapped in a grown up feeling package. What I love is no ads, no articles about boys or dating, clothing showcased that I would actually let her wear and real girl models.

Thank you Kiki Magazine.

I have two fashionistas, ages 9 and 7. We LOVE this magazine. As a mom, I am very thankful for the great content that is AD FREE! You will not regret your subscription!

Kiki is a good magazine for girls who love fashion, but not just fashion like makeup and stuff. It has really good ideas for how to reuse old clothes and there are crafts you can make with recycled things. They go to different places that are fun to read about, like Paris and the Hershey Chocolate Factory. There is also a design contest in every issue and it is fun to try out new ideas. They have models, and it is fun to look at the different clothing and say "Hey, I have that" and then you can make your own outfit. Most issues have an article about a girl who has a business or a hobby--like one issue had an article about a girl who made comics, and another one about sisters who made jewelry, and another about sisters who made lip balm. I just really like Kiki. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it only comes every two months!

(From her mother: I love that Kiki celebrates real girls--their models look like your daughter's best friend, not a mini supermodel--and they teach actual principles of design and fashion as an art form, and encourage girls to explore their own sense of style. The content never encourages girls to mature too quickly, as many other publications aimed at teens seem to do--instead it broadens their horizons and helps them develop confidence and a strong sense of self. I could not be more enthusiastic in my recommendation!)

We purchased KIKI magazine at our favorite local fabric and craft store: Fibernotion. Since then, we have fallen in love with it! Kiki is so much fun and my now 11 year old daughter looks forward to it coming every two months. The design is fun and it always has some great projects for her to do. There is an educational element ie, an article about keeping track of your money. They always highlight a foreign city; it's cultural attractions and history. There are design contests. My daughter, who doesn't think she can draw, entered an Umbrella Design Contest and was Honorably Mentioned! Diverse girls models clothing that kids can buy with their allowance, nothing fancy. I highly recommend Kiki Magazine!

I get a lot of magazines. A lot. Very few get read through completely for obvious reasons; time, many other mags to read, not interested in ALL the content. This is one I read through each and every month, along with Parents, TV Guide and Readers Digest. It has great articles that appeal to almost everyone, humor, great advice, etc. I really enjoy it and usually read it as soon as it arrives!

Northern Woodlands

Northern WoodlandsI was recently introduced to "Northern Woodlands" by a friend of mine, and I'm quite impressed with the magazine. Not only is the photography stunning, but the content is of high quality. I particularly like that it isn't purely a conservationist's soapbox, but they offer information on forest value and management as well. I'm not a forester, but still enjoy this magazine.

My friend from Vermont gave me a gift subscription to this magazine four years ago ... and I've been subscribing to it myself ever since. It is an informative(and often enlightening)resource to the last chapter of New England's agricultural community. Those many steadfast Northerners who no long can afford a farm have been for decades managing woodlots that are harvested for a modest income. How to best manage their woodland ... and who to best deal with in lumbering ... are their concerns; and Northern Woodlands is what is read. I'll bet that it's replaced the old almanac in most homes!

Fhm - Uk Edition

Fhm - Uk EditionI've had the opportunity to read this magazine while being depployed to Basra, Iraq with the British military. Every issue that came out at the NAAFI store I took up the chance to buy it. This magazine is nothing short of amazing. It is much better than the American version that was unfortunately discontinued. Its filled with hilarious articles and beautiful women. I just wish it didn't cost so damn much to subscribe to the states. If you get the chance to stop by a local Barnes & Noble pick up an issue and check it out. You won't regret it I promise!

Amazon Charges about over $120 for this Subscription than directly ordering from FHM.com But , I do love this over Maxim since Maxim UK Edition has been canceled. I like "British" magazines better because United States Magazine are very prudish just like our TV Networks & Magazines. The one star is for the price Amazon charges alone.
