Das Neue Blatt

Das Neue BlattPurchased this magazine as a Christmas gift for my mother last year. Never realized a German subscription would be available in the U.S.

German still being her first language she is thrilled. It is delivered right on time, every week, so she looks forward to it and it keeps her up to date on the European news.

Having had such a positive experience, I have reordered the magazine for another year. Ordering is easy, everything is explained, you can even print out a gift card. Absolutely worth it.

Great magazine for those who want to read the latest German news and gossip. Bought it for my German grandma. Only problem was the time lapse of the arrival dates. Many contests and rewards from the magazines crossword puzzles and such are difficult to enter. The entry date usually expires before the deadline. Still a good buy.

International Bulletin of Missionary Research

International Bulletin of Missionary ResearchChristian faith has always been centrifugal, rarely containable, and viscerally cross-cultural. The mission of the Christian Church is therefore expansive, intentionally persuasive, and usually outward-looking.

The academic study of this mission is called missiology. Often regarded in terms of its European roots (think University of Edinburgh), American divinity schools and faculties of missiology have in the last three decades pumped out legions of graduates. The International Bulletin of Missionary Research, published by the high-regarded Overseas Ministries Study Center, has emerged as one of the dominant trade journals for this academic study.

Its pages are frequently filled by articles, essays, and dissertation synopses produced by non-Western scholars, who increasingly represent the dynamic as well as the demographic center of Christian mission. The monthly Bulletin is edited and produced to a high standard and as made itself an indispensable source for missionary research.

One of its most popular features is entitled 'My Pilgrimage in Mission', which chronicles changes in the enterprise via first-hand accounts of how living beyond one's familiar context changes a person from the inside out.

Clubhouse Jr

Clubhouse JrMy mom purchased Clubhouse Jr for the kids a few months ago. Published by Focus On The Family, this magazine has been around since I was a child. For ages 3-7, my kiddos fall right into this category.

I have to say that the first two issues we received were disappointing. A lot of the magazine contained pictures, drawing, and jokes sent in by readers.

Then we received this month issue!!! LOVE. IT.

They have added more pages and activities. The stories are fun and engaging. Even today we have three activities planned that are suggested in the magazine.

Different than the other magazine that we subscribe to (which I love as well), Clubhouse JR includes information about other countries. As we read, we are constantly looking at the map. I love how it exposes our kiddos to other cultures and countries throughout the world!

Here is what Focus on the Family has to say about it:

The top 5 reasons why kids love being in "The Club":

Character-building stories and exciting articles.

Cooking, baking and crafts activities.

Colorful illustrations and photography.

Fun-filled puzzles, games, riddles and jokes.

A worldwide community of Clubhouse friends.

But that's not all! Parents and grandparents love both Clubhouse Jr. and Clubhouse magazines because they build character in youngsters through the simple, life-changing, biblical values that fill each story, craft, joke and article.

This month we read a wonderful article on the Fruits of the Spirit. The abstract terms were made so simple that even my daughter understands the "fruits".

We had a subscription to this magazine for about a year and a half, for our 6yr old daughter. She LOVED it! It offerend stories, coloring pages, activities and crafts. It kept her attention through about the age of 7. As she started getting older, she lost interest and we transitioned to Clubhouse. This magazine is good for kids who like to read, but I wouldn't recomend it for those who don't. All in all, it is a great magazine giving smaller children the gift of God's Word and God's Creation through this fun, kid-friendly format. Makes a great gift!!!

I bought this for my granddaughter who is just beginning kindergarten. I visited her over Thanksgiving, and she was excited to show me the magazine. The articles are short just the attention duration for someone her age. I like the principles that this teaches and am happy that she enjoys the selections.

Lenswork

LensworkLenswork is a gem. I adore the three layer black and white printing process used to display this art photograph. The tones and details are so rich and vibrant. A unique joy just for the photos. All in black and white so if you are intrested in color you won't find any here.

There is plenty of new and retrospective photograpy sections. There are three to four photographers work in each issue. Always something very new and something wonderful from the past.

The magaizine has great interviews of photograpers and essays on art and photograpy. There is not real techincal ideas about photography, but many ideas and philospophical challenges to jump start your photographic imagination. It is an inspiring work.

Also it is not subsidized by advertising. Only advertisment you will see is print sales from the magizine itself and a subscription application. So it is selling it own ideas not some slotch that drives you to by a product.

There's a lot to like about Lenswork the selection of images, the quality of the printing, Bill Jay's "End Notes" but the thing I like the most is that there is almost no discussion of equipment. Brooks Jensen (the editor/publisher) doesn't appear to care what camera you used to make a photograph, or how many miles through a raging blizzard you hiked to make it. All that matters is the image. And after you've finished looking at the images, you'll find a lot of wisdom and practical information packed into each issue, too.

Highly Recommended!

This is a 'small' magazine in size but large in terms of inspiration. The photographs and the stories are not so much focused on technique but more on the artistic values and philosophy of photography. Each issue includes an interview with an artist as well as one or more sets of photographs. The publishers are deeply involved in photography and often contribute their own images. Like good art, the photographs show that good photographers can turn ordinary objects into interesting subjects. Hence, the inspirational value of the publication.

In addition to 'standard' magazine fearures, the publishers often offer the ability to purchase limited edition prints like the current offer for some of Bradford Washburn's mountain photographs.

This is perhaps my favorite Photography magazine. The printing is fantastic as is the subject matter. I really like the fact there are no ads in it at all. So many photography mags are just an extended catalog for B&H or Adorama that this is a breath of fresh air.

The photography itself is second to none. Always something interesting and fresh.

I'm not a techy camera person, but I do appreciate quality b&w photography and the creativity of active photographers. Lenswork magazine highlights quality work and provides interview info on the artists. It's like attending gallery openings! I enjoy it, and the format lets me experience the photographs myself. It's a well-done, intelligent publication. Worth the price!

Quick Quilts (1-year auto-renewal)

Quick QuiltsI purchased a subscription to this magazine last year for Christmas for my mom, who is a master quilter, and she loves it. She said most of the patterns/projects are considered "easy" but she likes it for that reason. Asked for a subscription renewal for this Christmas, and got it!

I love thumbing through this magazine. Just perfect for a new quilter like myself; nothing seems too challenging, but you can create some very pretty items! Great variety of quilts, something for everyone.

I am new to quilting, and am trying to help my church make quilts for charity. Working full time, I thought this might be a great help. Maybe these are quick quilts for those with a lot of experience, but it's not quick for my purposes. It may have also been my mistake by equating "quick" to "easy".

I quilt a lot, but only have a limited time to quilt each day. I love the smaller quick projects. I also purchase this for my daughter in law & friend. Seems every time a new issue comes out, I receive a call of thank you. The magazine has a good variety of projects, including a handbag this month.

Climbing (1-year auto-renewal)

ClimbingThis is a great magazine for anyone who loves climbing. Fantastic photography of climbs throughout the US and the world with good articles. I prefer Rock & Ice Magazine, but this is a close second.

This is a cool magazine for people who climb, i dig it. Im looking forward to getting more issues of this

I mistakenly subscribed to this for two long years, instead of the intended Rock & Ice. I just received the latest issue only to see on the front cover, a great photo, but one I'd seen in Rock & Ice more than a year ago! This is the second time in the last 6 months this has happened. I've been climbing for more than 30 years and there's nothing in this magazine of interest to me. I'm going to cancel it, and I don't care if they send a refund or not. Going to Rock & Ice.

The most ridiculous magazine you can ever buy. First off it seems to be written by surfers. Gnarly, totally awesome dude, bogus... I'm not joking "gnarly" is actually on this month's cover. Second, you learn NOTHING. What a shock that people who failed English class wouldn't have any good advice on the sport. Third, they are so stuck on themselves; any other sports are for the pathetic. Hiker, kayakers... are all second rate people. Basically from the front cover, you have a bunch of `adults' who are trying to recapture their youth by telling everyone dumb enough to keep reading how "awesome" they are. If you interested about the sport look someplace else. Although if you just want flashy photos this is a great magazine.

Country Living - England

Country Living - EnglandNot necessary to be an Anglophile to enjoy this mag! Though I miss my home away from home, there are reasons other than it being British that make me love CL UK. Don't be fooled by the title this magazine is SO different from its American counterpart its ACTUALLY about living in the country country houses, country recipes, country gardening, ideas for what to do OUTSIDE in the country. Country Living US has become townie/quasi-cottage, but it is not about rural village life at all. Soak up the charm of the British countryside; learn about traditional trades; travel to quaint hotspots; scan the real estate listings like you're actually considering purchasing a second home in the Cotswolds!; shop online for great products otherwise available only in the UK; try your hand at everything from putting up your own marmalade or keeping hens to comparative cooker browsing and upscale English Country interior decorating! Absolutely my favorite read!!!

The US version of Country Living should aspire to the quality of content and articles offered in the UK version. I suspect there may be a demographics issue -in the US, the notion of "Country" has been hijacked by animals (ie: geese, ducks, cows, rabbits) wearing trailing bows, grape-vine wreaths with plastic flowers hot-glued on, and tole painted milk jugs. When I think American "Country Living" I think "Buy One Mobile Home, Get One Free: Furniture Included". In the UK, Country Living feels a bit more authentic and less kitsch-y. There are great articles about animal husbandry, local food initiatives (as well as guidance on DIY food production), gorgeous old restored farmhouses and the shabby chic furniture that fills them, charming commentaries and columns detailing the quirky and quaint vignettes that make up a *life actually lived in the countryside* and filled with country pursuits. Even the format (large) and quality of the paper (glossy, as opposed to National Enquirer quality) is superior. I'm a firm believer in "You get what you pay for," and in this case, that is certainly true.

This magazine is so beautiful and sumptuous, I find myself wanting to jump into the pages and taking up residence.

Big A++

I loved buying this occasionally on the newstand, and when Country Home (US) folded, this British magazine filled the gap. first issue arrived in only 11 weeks, sooner than the 12-16 weeks projected by Amazon.

update: still a great mag, but the second issue never arrived. good customer service, they sent replacement promptly. the problem with imported mags is that you don't know when to expect their arrival.

update2: they answered my email question about when to expect issues (by 15th of month) and the Feb issue arrived promptly on the 11th.

Having grown up on a farm in England, I love this publication. I read the very first copy on a flight back to the US from visiting my parents in the late 1980s and haven't knowingly missed one since that time. Country Living gives a true picture of country life in the UK albeit somewhat upmarket through the seasons. Many, if not most, of the decorating, gardening, and cooking ideas are easily adaptable for US homes. Once a month, when my new copy arrives, I fix a cup of tea or two, or more and curl up in favorite chair for a couple of hours "back home".

Memphis

MemphisThis magazine is a 'steal' for the price ($15) The editors keep its readers informed on anything that matters! It is a 'slick' copy, fit for any coffee table!

We have subscribed since it's inception, along with magazines for other cities we frequent (we live in a suburb of Memphis). It gives you a lot of great information and its restaurant listings in the back are most helpful, especially when a new one appears. We love the "Ask Vance" column about old Memphis (pre 1965) as we have both lived here most of our lives and we are now retired. We frequently give gift subscriptions to newcomers.

If you plan on coming for Memphis in May (our annual month-long festival) it gives you great coverage so you know when to come for things like the BBQ contest or Sunset Symphony. (If you plan on coming this year, better make hotel reservations NOW).
