Rivet

RivetSo there's a new magazine, except it's not new (existing in some form for 4 years), and it's not a magazine, at least not in the sense I'm used to. It is Rivet, and, smaller in dimensions (something like 6.5 x 8 inches) than your usual mag, the thing it most reminds me of is a poetry anthology, if a poetry anthology could consist of photos, art, articles, essays, recipes, interviews, discursive blurbs, short short fiction, in addition to its poetry. I say poetry anthology because the format often consists of relatively brief individual works employing flashes of imagery (visual and textual), covering a wide range of subjects, perspectives, and voices, and all tied together by a single theme. Rivet does this in both of the issues I've read so far, employing the unifying concepts of "union" and "green" respectively, and in each issue the editor skillfully manages to weave it all together.

The above description might make it sound like Rivet is another one of those uber-artsy and inaccessible art/lit mags, which is not true. It's smart without being pretentious, has a heart but doesn't wax sentimental, and seems predicated on finding both the fun and the relevance in whatever subject is being explored. One word I would not use to describe this mag is "cynical". I found Rivet's simultaneously clear-eyed and hopeful outlook very appealing.

One word of warning to readers: to borrow the SAT analogy form of comparison, Rivet is to more traditional art/lit mags as poems are to fiction. You'll get the sharp, brief flash effect of the poem rather than the extended narrative effect of the short story or novel. It has depth but reads quickly, and if you prefer to settle down with long articles or short stories, this may not be the mag for you.

I think, however, that if you pick it up, you won't want to put it down. Good stuff.

Rivet is a cool little chapbook-like mag that deserves being thrown into your zine reading rotation. Each issue's "theme" is explored through diverse channels of writing and visual styles that showcase the many ways one can approach a topic.

Aside from Rivet's unique conceptual aspect, the greatest part about this mag is its resemblance to a diary or scrapbook. It comes across like something the reader may have put together him/herself stories, pictures, drawings, an unbelievable statistic or bit of trivia; everything that is franticly written down, or else is forgotten. I wouldn't be surprised if someone, wanting to be deemed genius, ripped off the cover and gave it to a friend saying, "Yeah...this is just something I put together over the weekend while flipping through CNN, MTV and The History Channel".

My only complaint is that the layout can be difficult to digest at times; it's attractive and stimulating, but also dizzying and distracting. Does every page have to resemble a hip clothing ad? Those ads look cool, but one is only expected to read the tag line and then move on, not sit in front of it with his/her head at a 45 degree angle for the length of time it takes to read a story, poem, etc. But I will do just that, because the pieces are so good.

I love this magazine, it's got something for everyone. As a 30+ Mom in the Midwest, I love to read the quirky articles and interesting blurbs of information, especially "Nuts and Bolts", because it's easy to pick up, read, and then put down if you need to run after a toddler. I also like this magazine because, as a Mom, I feel somewhat out of the loop in terms of pop culture . . . Rivet makes me feel like I can still talk about interesting things at a party and not bore people with stories of my offspring. Know what I mean?

Old Cars Price Guide (1-year)

Old Cars Price GuideThis magazine can drive car collectors nutty. That being said, however, we have to realize that it's all that out there that counts. The Editor/Publisher could add more "rare" factory models (say, 1955 1975), and add more definitive optional equipment listings, but that might use up to much space. I'll keep getting it.

The prior issues had more information on a longer span of year models. Was once the best guide. Now it is not maintained well.

First, the picture is incorrect for the Price Guide. I guess this should have been my first clue. The problem is with the print and Kindle edition bundle. Amazon indicates that you can get both the print and Kindle version for your purchase. Unfortunately, it's only after you make the purchase that you are told the Kindle version is only available for the Kindle Fire. So, I was left holding the bag on this one. It would be nice if Amazon was upfront with their product. I was very disappointed in Amazon.

After buying item was told would be 3 months before 1st issue. I won't need it then. Would never have bought it if I knew I had to wait 3 months

Rubberstampmadness - Rubber Stamp Madness

Rubberstampmadness - Rubber Stamp MadnessThis is the oldest art rubber stamp magazine still publishing (National Stampagraphic went under a few years ago) and it doesn't show it's age. For the latest news on various techniques, conventions, stamps and accessories, this is the place that the majority of rubber stampers (if not all) turn to for advice.

That's because in addition to rubber stamp art, there are profiles of stampers, examples of mixed media (collage, copier) art and catalog reviews of stamp companies, There's a convention list. There's an area where you can post mail art calls as well as an area to request pen pals or find various rubber stamp essentials.

And for the vast majority of rubber stampers, this _is_ an essential magazine. If you're interested in rubber stamp art, this magazine is the best place to start on the inky trail. Buy this subscription and be prepared to forget about dinner when the magazine is delivered it's that absorbing.

RSM is a magazine that keeps me updated on innovations in the stamping genre. The instructions are easy to follow, and the examples are eye-catching and great to browse.

The reviews of the rubber stamping websites are very informative, as are the reviews of new products and publications. Plus, their website has links to their advertisers, so I can leave my magazine in my reading area, and still browse the links from my computer!

This used to be a wonderful, innovative, different rubberstamping delight. Now it looks like all the others. It's small and not nearly as much fun as it used to be.

Curve Magazine

Curve MagazineIf you're lesbian you are probably already aware that it can be difficult to receive news and information pertaining directly to you from other periodicals. This magazine succeeds in covering this void that is often ignored by other media publications. CURVE delivers news, entertainment, human interest, and travel features focusing exclusively on the lesbian community. I have read this magazine for many years and have found it to be an invaluable resource. With a conscious effort to include racial, class, and ability differences I believe CURVE appeals to virtually every lesbian audience. It is mailed in a black wrapper to protect privacy (for those who are concerned). Despite my praises there are downfalls. Issues are not published every month and the magazine's short length can be a disappointment. But regardless, I continue to subscribe to CURVE because I feel it is well worth reading.

I'm a recent subsciber, but I think that Curve is a must need for every lesbian. I'm a teen whos just now comeing out, so this magizine has helped me view the lesbian world and feel comfortable with my self. It helped show me the culture behind being a lesbian rather then a bunch of wild lesbain sex which is often the way socitey portrays lesbains. It is definatly a must have.

Yes, like every other dyke in America I watch The L Word. But too much of the content of the magazine is about the show and it's actors: straight and lesbian. Give us a break, there are too many smart, strong, talented lesbians that would be of interest to focus on one TV series.

Want Curve Magazine Discount?

I recently emailed Curve to try to get a subscription. I have a gender-neutral name, and the editors assumed I was a man. Well, I am not. They told me that I was probably looking for a different magazine, because they are a lesbian magazine. They gave me the number for 'American Curve' magazine instead. I am really offended. Even if I had been a man, why should men (fathers, male relatives, and friends of gay women) be excluded from subscribing? I hate when some lesbians act out this stereotype of man-haters. My wife and I have plenty of male friends, and those friends would probably pick up an issue of Curve and flip through it just to see what's going on with "our people".

This really hurt my feelings.

Guns & Ammo, September 2007 Issue

Guns & Ammo, September 2007 IssueI'm not sure why Amazon.com ask buyers to review this product after all, what's there to review on a Guns & Ammo magazine? We all know they have been around for a long time and they are a great source of information for gun owners and collectors, that's why we buy it.

Motocross Action Magazine

Motocross Action MagazineI purchased this magazine subscription for my nephew for Christmas (he is 15 yrs. old). He is very hard to buy for within a limited budget (we budget $15-$20 per kid for gifts). He is into motorbikes, snowboarding, etc. and he just absolutely loves the subscription! Every month he gets a "gift" in the mail.

I have subscribed to MXA for about 5 years now, and it is the best motocross magazine available. Well written, excellent technical tips and info, best equipment reviews, and great articles. The editors are all MX racers, and the writing about vintage equipment and racing is great, important to an old guy like me who remembers those days. (I'm 43 and have been riding since I was 8) I keep my entire library of back issues at my trailer in the desert where I ride my bikes, and I find myself constantly referring to them for tech info, or just for good reading.

I ordered this product and accidentally had the item sent to me (the billing address) instead of the gift recipient. I IMMEDIATELY made the correction online, and contacted the distributer. The distributer provided emails saying they corrected this error. In February I received the magazine instead of the gift recipient. I sent a SECOND email reminding them of the error and their guarentee to correct the problem. Again, they said they would correct it. It is now March and I am, again, receiving the magazine subscription instead of the intended recpipent, I am incredibly frustrated with their service as it is inconsistant with what they say. I recommend ordering this magazine through a different distributer. Perhaps through Barnes and Noble.

Memphis

MemphisThis magazine is a 'steal' for the price ($15) The editors keep its readers informed on anything that matters! It is a 'slick' copy, fit for any coffee table!

We have subscribed since it's inception, along with magazines for other cities we frequent (we live in a suburb of Memphis). It gives you a lot of great information and its restaurant listings in the back are most helpful, especially when a new one appears. We love the "Ask Vance" column about old Memphis (pre 1965) as we have both lived here most of our lives and we are now retired. We frequently give gift subscriptions to newcomers.

If you plan on coming for Memphis in May (our annual month-long festival) it gives you great coverage so you know when to come for things like the BBQ contest or Sunset Symphony. (If you plan on coming this year, better make hotel reservations NOW).
