Down Beat

Down BeatThe current title of this magazine says it all: Jazz, Blues, and Beyond. The arrival of DownBeat at your door or magazine store will be a welcome event each month. DownBeat has been the standard magazine for articles on jazz musicians and record reviews for decades. In recent years, it has expanded to cover blues, rock, third stream, world beat, Brazilian popular music, and much more. MEGA-TONS of records, cassettes, and CDs have been sold based on the in depth reviews of the DownBeat critics. Magazines have come and gone and DB continues to get the best critics to write hip and incisive articles on musicians, jazz festivals, notable events, deaths, equipment, and musical transcriptions of great solos. Reader's letters to the editor, "Chords and Dischords" is a lively feature that never fails to ruffle some feathers.

A major feature has always been the "BlindFold Test" wherein a musician is played a range of individual music tracks by major artists and is asked to comment on the merits of the track and give it a rating, based on one to five stars. Miles Davis gave one memorable blindfold contest that is talked about to this day. His comments on Eric Dolphy and Cecil Taylor (two of my favorites by the way) were a real hoot; and then he moved in their direction later in his musical life. In the November 2005 issue, Ravi Coltrane, John's son, was tested on tracks by Gene Ammons, Michael Brecker, and Harry Connick Jr, among others.

Another major feature is the coveted and highly competitive DownBeat Jazz Award, a twice a year event, awarded to jazz artists in categories of major jazz instruments and functions (arranger, composer, musician of the year, and various musical groupings), and probably best of all, the DownBeat Hall of Fame. One award comes from the International Critics and, six month's later, the other DownBeat Jazz Awards are based on a "Reader's Poll" from a mail-in form. Upsets have abounded over the years, such as Sonny Rollins upset of John Coltrane on Tenor Sax, shortly before Mr Coltrane's untimely death, and recently Wynton Marsalis being upset on trumpet by Dave Douglas in the Critics Poll. If you like jazz, DownBeat is essential reading to keep your finger on the pulse of modern jazz, blues, and beyond. Five HUGE Stars!!

For current reviews of CD's and concerts as well as historical reviews of past releases Down beat cannot be beat. The articles are always interesting and the magazine blends the right mix of current and vintage musical information that makes every issue worth having. The Blindfold Test feature where some artist listens to a few recordings and tries to identify and offer commentary on the players is really cool. Especially when you can read what Charles Mingus has to say about other artists of his day as in the most recent issue. I look forward to every issue of Down Beat and recommend it to anyone who enjoys jazz.

The main bulk of Down Beat is reviews of albums that are coming out the jazz world. Quite easily, the best parts are the special sections, and interviews they have with artists.

Actually reading what the artists themselves have to say is very cool, especially to kids like me. :-)

Downbeat was a requested gift for Christmas last year and the gift was renewed this year. I personally have no opinion of it, but the person requesting it, absolutely loves it.

Thank you,

Karen

Pipes and Tobaccos

Pipes and TobaccosFor anyone with an interest in "the gentle art" of pipesmoking, it's customs, history, techniques or technology, "P & T" as it is known to its readers, is the finest magazine available on the subject. Each issue of this glossy quarterly is jam-packed with information on pipes and tobaccoiana, most of which is unavailable elsewhere.

Universally well-written articles mix with an editorial atmosphere redolent of the comforting sensibilities of old friends visiting together to make each issue a minor gem. The reviews of the hundreds of available pipe blends are particularly helpful for the pipe enthusiast (by the bye, the Latin term is Kapisiology---a tip of the hat here to P & T).

Great Magazine for the pipe smoking crowd, has stories about famous pipe brands and the people who make them. The magazine contains a monthly review of new and well established pipe tobacco blends. Is a MUST for the pipe collector.

Of the few choices in pipes/tobacco magazines, this is the best. Well written, lots of good information for beginners, advanced smokers, and hobbyist alike. A great magazine.

I've been picking up this magazine from the online retailers for years. Great articles and fun to read. The pictures of the pipes are fantastic. Wish I had the $$$ to buy the expensive freehands, but I'll have to settle for the big brands quality pipes. I'm not saying I'm disapointed in my collection. I've got some very pretty Peterson's and Savinelli's I truely enjoy smoking. But you can always dream of the ones you wish you could afford. After years of just picking the magazine up when I order tobacco, I decided to subscribe to the magazine. Looking forward to receiving my first issue.

Shape (1-year auto-renewal)

ShapeI've been a subscriber for two years, but I'm not going to renew this time. There are some great things about this magazine. There's always information about eating healthy, and many of the recipes are wonderful. Another feature is the Diary portion, where the magazine profiles individuals who have turned to fitness and healthy eating in order to lose weight. It's the most inspiring part of the magazine, and it's great that the magazine focuses on real women, not just how to tell those in perfect shape to stay in shape.

I do wish that the magazine would have a bit more variety. I feel like I keep seeing many of the same exercises repeated over and over. I also wish the magazine would realize that not all of us are in to New Age spirituality. If you do choose to subscribe, don't be surprised to see the latest issue at the newsstand before it arrives in your mailbox.

I've been subscribing to Shape for two years now and I have decided not to renew my subscription this year. When I first began reading Shape, it was almost solely dedicated to fitness and health. Now it's about 50% beauty and fashion (and a lot is articles that are simply trying to push products). I disagree with the writer who said that she wished they would stop showing moves with gym machines; this is one of the few sections of SHAPE I enjoy reading, as it does give great instructions on how to use the machines (definitely cheaper than hiring a personal trainer). But I do agree with the previous comments that the stories are starting to all sound the same from month to month especially the success stories. If you're just starting to exercise, this magazine will be helpful for you. But if you're a long-time exerciser, skip this one.

I use to subscribe to SHAPE several years ago, and then it was packed full of great work out routines, meal plans, etc for women at all levels of fitness.

Well . . . my last few months of Shape have been a complete disappointment. I found very few pages of good genuine fitness and healthy eating advice. Instead, it ranks right up with Glamour in the category of magazines with the highest percentage of advertisements, nearly all of the excercise material is supposed "quick fix" fitness fluff which gives women very unrealistic expectations, and the healthy eating advise is absolutely elementary.

There is no substance in here for women like me, the average working woman who desire to live a healthy life everyday and have limited time to commit to exercise. I want a magazine that is inspiring with a focus on living a sustained healthy lifestyle, not a joke about getting flat abs in a week with illustrations of perfectly chiseled models who obviously do not face the body challenges of average women. I'm sorry but most women are not going to look like "her" after two weeks, or many months of Shape's 10-30 minute a day routines, but they sure lead you to beleive so.

I highly recommend "Her Sports" it is THE magazine for women desiring to live an active, day-to-day healthy life!

Hardly an issue of "SHAPE" hits the newstands that does not prominently feature some article that sells some myth of fitness. There is almost always some article on "sculpting" followed by another implying there are some magic "spot reducing" exercise contained the pages. These two myths of fitness seem to be part of the magazine's core editorial policy. "Sculpting" is something done to clay, not muscles and fat, and "spot reducing" is a myth that ranks up there with the Flat Earth Society. I suspect the editorial staff of "SHAPE" promotes the kind of articles that espouse what people want to hear, not what is true about working out. Furthermore, nearly every photo of a strength training exercise features some hot-looking 20-something model using weights so light they wouldn't challenge a grandmother. Never will you see a picture of a model holding a weight that would be even slightly heavy for a healthy, fit woman of that age.

Mostly this magazine seems to be an excuse to sell ad space. Save your money and look elsewhere.

About two years ago, I became a subscriber to Shape, mainly because I had received it for free as part of a package deal with another magazine. I had always liked browsing through issues of Shape in the supermarket, and I thought that being a subscriber would help support my fitness goals. Overall, I have enjoyed Shape and found it to be useful, but there definitely are some negatives, and the magazine might not be for everyone.

But first the good. Like many others have mentioned, what I most enjoy about Shape is their real-life weight stories featuring a nice variety of women, some of whom actually needed to *gain* weight in order to be healthy. I also love their relatively new feature in which they follow one of their own staffers on a year-long weight loss journey. Many of their other regular features are also excellent, particularly the body part-focused strength exercises and other how-to exercise guides. And I especially like that Shape uses "Reader Models" with so many of their articles--real life women of various ages (although admittedly, mostly in the 25-35 range) with normal, healthy, strong bodies. Finally, their featured exercise plans each month often offer some unique variations on traditional exercises, and the recipes are often quite good as well.

The main negative has already been brought up by many others here: the use of too-skinny, not overtly fit or strong models to illustrate much of the magazine. I find this extremely disappointing; I understand that to sell magazines, the models probably have to conform to some traditional standards of attractiveness, but those of us buying the magazine want to see women who are not only fit but also strong--show us some muscles now and then! As I said above, the reader models are great; the women are usually quite fit, but they have muscles and curves too, which is wonderful to see. Shape MAY be trying to make some improvements in this area, as the last few covers have featured famous women who do exercise (such as Denise Richards), but they still have a long way to go. And while they're at it, I hope they will return to having their cover models dress in fitness wear, not bathing suits! They can still show off their model's physique AND showcase cute fitness wear at the same time. Similarly, I would like to see the magazine get rid of the fashion segment at the end *unless* they start focusing it on exercise clothing, not haute couture.

If you are overweight and/or new to exercising, you may find the magazine discouraging, but if you can get past some of the negatives, it can also be inspiring. I think it's up to each individual to determine whether a magazine like this is likely to hurt or help her fitness efforts; for me, it is helpful, but this definitely might not be the case with everyone.

Fire Engineering

Fire EngineeringFire Engineering, in my opinion is the benchmark that many other fire publications try to meet. If you are looking for a fire magazine that is not full of hype and has serious professionals writing articles then in my opinion this is the one for you. Articles are based on fact and have been field tested many times. I think that Fire Engineering takes difficult topics and makes sense out of them, in a pratical and easy to understand way. In my opinion there are probably about 5-7 great/good fire magazines out there but this one tops my list. If you are involved with the fire service and want to stay on top of current, tested and proven methods this is the magazine for you. Although Fire Engineering seems to have its share of advertisements they do not seem to bow to any particular manufacturer. Stay safe, wear your seatbelt, and come home alive.

People en Espanol (1-year auto-renewal)

People en EspanolThis magazine is wonderful if you are looking for a magazine that is easy to read, entertaining and yet informative all in one. It is geared toward the Latin community but I think it could also interest anyone who speaks Spanish and has a love for the culture. I started buying this magazine regularly in 1998 and I am still a fan of People en espanol. At first glance one may think that it's the Spanish version the weekly People magazine in English but believe me the only element in common is the title. This magazine has a section on "la farándula" and "en familia" which I find always nice to read and sometimes there are good articles about infants and kids that give helpful tips about childcare. There are other informative sections that you can read according to your personal preference. Lastly, the quality of the Spanish is very good in comparison to other magazines in its class in which I have found major grammar errors on a regular basis. This magazine is worth every cent and can be read through an through.

I must admit that I got hooked on this magazine after seeing a tiny picture of Juanes on the cover. I love his music and I wanted to know more about his life. My subscription started too late for his famous cover shot! ¡Que lastima! I missed several issues because they were sold out at the hispanic tiendas.

If you are learning español and you don't bother to learn the pop culture(s) of modern day Latin America you are not making the grade! In the office, our hispanic customers appreciate my interest in the popular entertainers from their countries. Textbooks have gotten better, but People En Español is always current. The grammar, vocabulary and reading practice will greatly improve your comprehension and you'll actually do it because it is fun and interesting.

I only have one minor complaint. I wish the Disfrútalo section would cover more films made by Spanish directors and featuring Spanish actors. Award-winning and nominated films made in Spanish aren't covered often enough and with enough depth. I would have loved to have seen a feature article on The Sea Inside or Maria Full of Grace.

As someone who is trying to learn Spanish, I am always looking for some good materials to practice with. This is perfect! They have very interesting articles (I think it is less 'fluffy' than the English version) and everything is in Spanish! They focus on Hispanic celebrities (from the U.S. and from other countries) and they focus more on family than beauty. They also review books, movies and television, which I really enjoy reading. One major difference between this and the English version is that People en Español only comes out once a month, whereas the English version comes out every week. Actually, there are only 11 issues per year, because they always combine December and January. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and can't wait to improve my Spanish!

This is a great magazine , much better than the english version, thier edition "50 bellos" , is the best. They really know how to pick beautiful people. The latest edition of "most beautiful" in english is really disappointing. I suggest People en Espanol, el mas mejor.

Sport Fishing (1-year auto-renewal)

Sport FishingMy husband used to buy magazine every month at the store at 6.95 a pop! Amazon had a great sale on magazines over the holidays so I decided to get him some subscriptions as Christmas gifts. What a great idea! Not only does he get his Salt Water fix, but we have been SAVING A TON OF MONEY by not buying it at the news stand. My husband never forgets to get the mail now, and we always have something to look forward to every month instead of junk papers.

Thank you Amazon for making these subscriptions so affordable!

Got this as a surprise for my boyfriend who is an avid fisherman and he loves it. I thought it was a little skinny but he really enjoyed the first issue. I do agree thus far the articles have been interesting; would recommend, especially for the $5 Amazon special. Can't beat that price!

I ordered this magazine as a gift for someone out of state. As far as I know, the magazine is fine. I have never seen it. What I am upset about is that it got set up as an automatic subscription to renew every year and bill my credit card which is on file with Amazon. I never knew this until I got a notice that it was being automatically renewed after the year was over. I immediately cancelled the order but a month later, it still shows in my account as "in the process of cancellation" and I just got a bill for it on my credit card. I am afraid if I pay the bill, it will not get cancelled.

When you go into your Amazon account, there is a Subscription Manager spot where you are supposed to be able to manage subscriptions. Yet there is no place to cancel as far as I can see. When I clicked on a link to give my feedback about the Subscription Manager, it took me to a page where I could do nothing.

I hate it when I order something and unbeknownst to me it sets itself up as an automatic renewal subscription which uses my credit card.

We all know they have been around for a long time and they are a great source of information for gun owners and collectors, that's why we buy it.

Decision - North American Edition

Decision - North American Edition"Decision" ranks as one of the classic Christian publications because it has clung fast to the principles which found it. Always focused on Scripture and evangelism, just as you'd expect from the Billy Graham organization, the articles are never bland. Instead of being filled with fluff, greeting card encouragement, "Decision" instead leads the way in design, in depth, and in honesty.

From the "Quiet Heart" poetry section (my favorite), to the call to a Christian life through features by Billy Graham, noted Christian teachers, and everyday people, there is a sense that the editors are doing more than publishing a magazine.

There are updates on the various Graham ministries, but this is not a newsletter about their efforts. There are Bible studies, like looking at Paul's "Letter to Philemon" as a guide to reconciling relationships and understanding God's involvement. There are testimonies, like how one woman came to know the peace of God while her young son struggled with a leukemia. From cover to cover, there is enough for a Christian reader to learn something worth knowing.

"Decision" is surprisingly ecumenical. Though the theology is Bible-based and evangelical, it is no respecter of denominations or churches. You'll read articles written by Lutherans, Baptists, Nazarenes and Anglicans, yet always bound to the Word of God.

I fully recommend "Decision," both as a gift for yourself or a friend, and as an excellent addition to your church library.
