Pig International

Pig International"Pig International" is a magazine covering all aspects of pig related news. My primary interest in the magazine is fundamentally framed by my biological education and interests, and while it suitable for scientists interested in contemporary porcine developments it is actually geared to pig farmers and the pork industry.

Each issue generally features a theme of relevance (the March 2007 issue, the latest at the time of this writing, was called "The Corn Issue," for instance.) Each issue reports on current macro-level pork market news, such as the recent national downturn in the British pork industry. All stories are well sourced and feature genuine experts: for instance the aforementioned story on the British pig downturn (written by Peter Best) interviewed Stewart Houston, the head of Britain's National Pig Association. The scope of the market analysis is very broad, and the reporting consistently well researched and clearly written. Frequent reports from important producing countries such as Denmark and Brazil give the magazine a distinctly international character.

More to my line of interests, the articles on biological factors and the veterinary care of pigs are expert and scientifically rigorous. The coverage is not limited to pigs but to relevant tangents such as herd management, breeding, feed, and antibiotic developments. Advanced techniques such as ultrasound and genetic analysis are frequently featured, and numerous academic institutions from the University of Minnesota to the University of Leipzig frequently are cited for their sophisticated studies. I have a particular interest in genetics, and the magazine covers the field of pig genetics exceptionally clearly. A typical feature is that seen in the March 2007 edition on the Meishan ("Milk from the Meishan,") a breed famous for its fertility in China, which was the subject of an investigation by Dr. Chantal Farmer from the Swine Research and Development Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food in Lennoxville, Quebec.

In addition to the features a "Names in the News" section reads like a "Who's Who" of the pork industry, while new products and meetings like the World Pork Expo are featured in smaller columns designed to be brief and informative.

The magazine is recommended for anyone interested in the pork industry, pig biology, or farming. I awarded it four stars as it is an excellent magazine overall, though I would prefer more of an emphasis on pig biology (especially genetic, histological, and cytological studies) and less on the commercial aspects of the business; bear in mind that a pig farmer or packing house will feel conversely. Overall "Pig International" is a good compromise between the needs of biologists, veterinarians, farmers, and the commercial pork industry.

Neue Post

Neue PostI'm writing on behalf of my mother who is getting the magazine. She is a German immigrant who just loves Neue Post. It has long been her only trusted authority for news, health and beauty tips, celebrities and whatnot. For years, a cousin in Germany used to mail her bundles of old issues after everyone in her household had read them. That cousin died a few years ago, and aside from losing her lifelong friend, my mother sorely missed getting her favorite magazine. She remarked on it every time her cousin came up in a conversation, so when I found out she could get a Neue Post subscription through Amazon, I gave her one for her birthday. She was overjoyed and couldn't wait for the deliveries to start. Fortunately, the magazine arrived two weeks earlier than promised and so far it has come promptly every week. My mother now looks forward to Mondays because that is when her Neue Post arrives. She is especially happy that she now gets the latest news from Germany when it is news, and not a month or so later after her relatives have finished looking it over. I don't think I've ever given her a present she has loved more than this. Thanks, Amazon, for giving her so much joy.

I got this for my parents who are from Germany. They like to keep up with what's going on in German tv, movies and music.

she loves it. It keeps her up on the news from her mother country. Plus some fun things too. So far the mailing has been good as well.

MotorHome (1-year auto-renewal)

MotorHomeI have been an avid reader of Motorhome magazine since 1990 or before, I can't quite recall. I find each issue informative with practical up-to-date information covering motorhomes in all class types and all price ranges. I have benefited from the information in every issue. Most of all, I find Motorhome enjoyable reading. So, I am disillusioned that more reviewers are not addressing the content of this magazine rather than driving away potential beneficiaries by giving low star points due to first-issue delays. Many Amazon surfers may get the wrong impression by scanning just the ratings and not learn what a great quality publication this really is.

THIS IS A GREAT INFORMATION SOURCE. HAS SO MANY NEW IDEAS TO USE ON YOUR CAMPING TRIP. JUST LOVE THE NEW MOTOR HOME REVIEWS

Vogue Knitting International

Vogue Knitting InternationalI am the husband of a knitter. I am entering this review because the one review posted has nothing to do with the content most subscribers (in US) are seeking. My wife, like most serious knitters, belongs to a knitters group that meets every week. Discussing publications is always a part of any gathering. My observation is that Vogue Knitting International is one of their most appreciated and discussed pubs. Many of their projects come from the pages of this mag. The group, located in Maine, is made up of beginners to advanced and is led by a German knitter. My wife is getting a subscription to this for Xmas because she is always seeking the next issue in all visits to book stores.

Vogue knitting magazine is my favorite knitting magazine. The photos are gorgeous, there are a wide variety of patterns for all abilities, the pattern instructions are very clearly written and easy to follow even on the more advanced patterns and it is enjoyable to just flip through because the photos of the finished patterns are stunning. I have been knitting for about a year and a half and I have successfully knit an intermediate and one advanced pattern from vogue knitting both of which turned out beautifully.

I love that the patterns are not your average stockinette stitch sweater, they are interesting, fashion forward patterns that would appeal to even young teenagers.

I have been subscribed to this magazine for many, many years. I wouldn't give up my subscription. Even if I don't knit from it....it gives me great ideas and suggestions for yarn. It's the best.

So glad I purchased this magazine. I look forward to each new edition. Soon, when I retire, I will start knitting some of the lovely patterns contained in it.

Vogue Knitting International is in my opinion the best knitting magazine on the Market. It's not too far out there with strange designs, but you get a good mixture of quality knitwear designs. I started out by getting subscriptions to other popular knitting magazines, and was disappointed in the lack of quality and the lack of really good designs. So I purchased a copy of Vogue Knitting and was instantly hooked. They have a good range of modern designs, classics, contemporary, and now and again knits with a vintage feel. You will get your money's worth with this magazine.

Diabetes Self-Management (1-year auto-renewal)

Diabetes Self-ManagementThis jewel was initially given to me by a nurse specializing in diabetes. She said I should get a subscription. What the nurse did not tell me was that this bimonthly magazine is a wonderful aide for general good health.

First, "Diabetes Self Management" does provide outstanding information about diabetes. In one issue I learned exactly how this disease functions and how easy it is to make myself worse. Another article explained my treatment options, discussed their effectiveness, and gave me a comparative analysis of them.

"Diabetes Self Management" has explained, in terms I can understand, how my diet and activities make such a difference in how I feel. For example, I had been told to carefully monitor my calories and eat a good balanced diet. I did that and my blood sugar remained a problem. The magazine published an article, based upon detailed research, that explained which foods are quickly processed into my system and can elevate my blood sugar 30 points in 15 minutes. It mentioned others that were processed very slowly and would effect my blood sugar levels gently over a period of hours vital information for a diabetic.

But there is a bonus. "Diabetes Self Management" includes articles on general good health and good living. The September October issue printed a wonderful article on Disaster Preparedness that is a must have for anyone who could face a natural disaster like a tornado, hurricane, flood, or fire. An additional article discussed common foot problems and their solutions again in terms that are easy to understand.

Diabetes Self Management is an excellent resource for information that we should all have available to us. I highly recommend this product.

There are a lot of helpful articles in this magazine for those with Diabetes. It keeps you up to date on the latest equipment and medicines. There are always articles of encouragement, too, regarding how to better deal with the disease. It helps to read about other people's stories.

Real Simple (1-year auto-renewal)

Real SimpleI am a strong proponent of living a simpler, less stressed life and I was really happy when I saw an entire magazine was dedicated towards the simple life. After reading it, though, I think what they meant to say was that this is the way to spend money and feel better about yourself.

An idea for avoiding dishes? Buy lots of coffee filters, line your mixing bowls with them and throw them away when you're done. This turns us into a disposable lifestyle, not a simple one. Need to figure out if a window is sunny enough for a plant? Buy a $60 device that (I kid you not) plugs into the dirt, records the sunlight for you and then plugs into your USB port to tell you what it saw. There's an article on an interracial marriage which doesn't sound simple to me, and while it's cool, it doesn't help me learn anything about living more simply.

How about dressing simply? They want you to buy an $85 pair of flats and a $68 belt. Maybe a $70 pair of shorts.

Some articles are helpful. How can you spot a fake bill? Might be useful to know. Other articles miss out on basics. They talk about how a pound of sugar was 12 cents in 1960 and is now 52 cents but they say nothing at all about what it WOULD be adjusted for inflation. Is this higher than before? Lower? Nobody knows.

There are good tips in here. Go to your library and use their vast resources for free. Negotiate with your health care provider for lower costs. Use local playgrounds for exercise and fun. Bring your lunch, don't eat out. Even so, you turn the page and they're suggesting $200 blazers as cool items for the simple household blazers that, honestly, most of us would only wear once or twice given its color and what it would go with in a given season. Never mind the $400 giant black jumpsuit. Not simple.

I'm not saying simple has to be boring or drab but there is a big difference, in my mind, between recommending a simple item of clothing that could be worn every week without an issue and recommending a $400 splurge on something that would rarely be brought from the closet. That belongs more in a "splurge fashion" magazine, not a "real simple" magazine.

So while I appreciate some of the tips here, there was too much emphasis on buying things especially things people simply don't need. I feel the magazine falls into this category itself.

I'll admit it -I buy every issue of this magazine. The title, however, always calls up a wry grin. The simple lifestyle the book advocates isn't all that easy! To achieve it you'll have to go buy the materials for the magazine's simplifying project, then re-arrange your house so you have a place to work on the project (which naturally requires purchasing even more things) and then finally you'll have to find the time to actually complete the project. Of course, to find the time you'll have to buy a new wall calendar and clock and Rolodex. I think the magazine has hit the American pluse on the button -spend limited money and time to help better organize limited money and time, all while reminding yourself how beneficial and FUN all this work is. Oh, and don't forget to turn your repeated shopping trips to Target into "quality time" with your two-year-old in the process. So what do I do with the magazine? I'll go home after a tough day at work, and enjoy a cup of off-the-shelf non-gourmet herbal tea (cracked coffee mug, water heated in cheap saucepan with missing handle) and fantasize about leading the kind of lifestyle the magazine portrays. I read about gifts to buy the boss (as if!) and about knitting scarves, and all those premanufactured pastel "lifestyle accessories." The latest issue has advice on picking chocolates. I have one word on the subject -Hershey's. The whole magazine is far outside my salary, and the total opposite of my garage-sale Western-omelet-at-Denny's lifestyle. It's escapism, pure and SIMPLE.

Don't get me wrong..I love the two hard cover books, Real Simple Solutions and Real Simple: The Guide to Organized Living. They are gems. However, the magazine simply betrays it's words. As one rater stated, it seems like the reader is cajoled into buying un-needed expensive products, and my god..the magazine is cluttered with ads and inserts, plus it is very hard to turn the pages and read. I realize ads are necessary, but this is extreme, especially for a magazine that supposedly promotes a less complicated and cluttered life for it's readers.

I subscribed to Real Simple from the first issue for several years. At first it had some great unique ideas, and some really cool decorating ideas. Then, shortly after the second year, they seemed to run out of ideas. Unfortunately, they kept publishing anyway. The ideas rerun so often, if I flip through one now I find the SAME recipes (ravioli lasagna) and SAME tips they had the first year. Huge disappointment. If you are interested, don't commit for more than a year!

Want Real Simple (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

I enjoy reading Real Simple. The articles are informative and the magazine is beautiful to look at. I disagree that the content is not substantial it is a monthly magazine, what exactly were you expecting? I also disagree that the magazine solely targets those in an upper income bracket. While some of the items they suggest are things my husband and I still dream of, there are also items they review regularly that you can pick up at CVS Pharmacy. In fact, the product reviews are probably the most useful part of the magazine. I like seeing purchase information next to something that catches my eye. Real Simple is a welcome alternative to other women's magazines that focus on giving yourself multiple orgasms or figuring out your personality based on astrological signs. If you are interested in browsing through a magazine that gives personal stories, features useful products, provides yummy recipes for nights when you have guests over (or have the time to cook a special meal), and is aesthetically pleasing to the eye this magazine is for you.
