Red Magazine

Red MagazineI buy this magazine often from Barnes & Noble in the states. It's filled with content I that I wish all the popular women's magazines were filled with: Fashion, cooking, interesting interviews, product reviews, home design etc. The magazine has everything and I find myself constantly going back to the same magazine until it's essentially torn to pieces. It's a perfect Sunday morning read, and it'll leave you entertained for hours, at least for me it's about 3 hours of unapologetic mag & tea time.

My only gripe is the price in the US. I think it goes for $11. That's a lot for a magazine so I refuse to purchase it every month, I can't justify this monthly expenditure. I wish it were cheaper, sure. But it's a great, whimsical, well rounded product. For that I am pleased.

A friend brought me a copy of Red while she visited Oxford. I spent hours with it. This magazine is superb; the articles are well-written and engaging. The only thing that bothered me was the references to certain products, many of which are available only in the UK, with prices listed in pounds. (Yes, I know this is a British magazine but I was mildly annoyed. Call me shallow.) This didn't bother me enough to make me stop reading at any time, however. After the first read, I wanted to read it all again.

About the only thing that stops me from ordering a subscription is the high price. Perhaps when I win the Publishers' Clearing House Sweepstakes I will subscribe to Red.

Proceedings of the United States Naval Institute

Proceedings of the United States Naval InstituteAs an Air Force officer, I envy this magazine. It's got a definite nautical emphasis, but the other services aren't neglected. Without a doubt the best single thing going in print for understanding the current policies/thought/developments in doctrine and technology of the US military.

It should be stressed that the USNI magazine "Proceedings" is NOT officially connected with the US Government in any way. As it says on the cover, the USNI is "the Independent Forum on National Defense"

From Proceedings you can get detailed articles on current naval technology and trends, plus points of view on military issues that would NOT be welcome in the halls of the Pentagon, but are at the same time presented with professionalism and due respect for all concerned. The articles are written by formerly and currently serving officers and enlisted military people who are mostly sea service people (Navy, Coast Guard, and Marines), and by civilians with pertinent backgrounds and specific area expertise. It is filled with always up to date, and sometimes contentious, articles and opinion pieces making it one of the most valued magazines in my reading bins.

The New Republic (1-year auto-renewal)

The New RepublicA must for a political junkie. I need a balanced opinion from each side of the argument. I also subscibe to the National Review.

The New Republic is a weekly magazine that has well-written, well-researched articles.

And the "regulars" are looked forward every week.

Stanley Kauffmann is still reviewing films as he has for more than 50 years. His insights

and perspective are always most interesting.

Leon Wieseltier's "Washington Diartist" is a gem...every time. His one-page articles

provoke thought and discussion, partly because he is such a wonderful writer.

Scholastic Parent And Child

Scholastic Parent And ChildI am a kindergarten teacher with a M.S. in early childhood and literacy education as well as the mother of FOUR children... I found this magazine in my OBGYN office when I was pregnant with my second child and FELL IN LOVE IMMEDIATELY. This magazine, without a doubt, needs to be in every home that has children between the ages of 1-12yrs. I found the articles to be EXACTLY on the pulse of today's research regarding best practices for children regarding ALL AREAS of development. EVERY article is valuable and informative and there is PLENTY of FUN thrown in as well!! PLEASE give this magazine a try... You won't regret it! Heads and shoulders above other parenting magazines that I have previously subscribed to in the past. I cancelled all my other subscriptions and am now just receiving this... AND I SAVE EVERY ISSUE!! I can't throw them away! VERY HAPPY!!

Scholastic Parent & Child is a good magazine that strives to educate parents on specific issues regarding the raising of their children. This publication aims to offer advice and suggestions on ways to teach your children better, deal with crises, etc., as you raise your children from birth through the early teenage years.

Scholastic Parent & Child helps parents with child issues for youngsters and its advice covers children from infants through approximately twelve years of age. The material contained within this magazine covers a multitude of topics and one of the nice qualities is that the articles are very up to date. This publication seeks out the latest research, the newest methodologies, etc. and applies it to the advice in each issue. Scholastic Parent and Child wants concerned parents to have the best information from the most reputable sources, in order to make the best decisions possible for your family, so its writers work hard to make sure they include the latest findings.

Another nice quality with Scholastic Parent and Child is that the articles are not aimed solely at children. Often, parents have concerns of their own, such as balancing work and home, changing careers, seeking reprieve from the challenges of parenthood, etc. Because of this, the magazine strives to include articles aimed at adults among its many departments and sections. Yes, there is usually a family theme behind these articles, but it is still nice that the magazine realizes the importance of having a healthy adult to raise a happy, healthy child. .

Parenting magazines serve an important purpose and Scholastic Parent & Child is a very good publication about raising kids, educating, dealing with crises, and having fun. This magazine covers a wide range of topics and while I would like it better if it offered more frequent publication and a few more pages in each issue, it is still a very good magazine for families with children age twelve and under.

This was not as good as I expected for a Scholastic publication. It has a lot of advertising. That surprised me. Parent or Parenting are just as good, if not better, magazines.

I plan to call and have my subscription cancelled. This magazine is way too mainstream for my family and also does not offer anything fresh or different from any of the other "parenting" magazines.

Geographical: the Royal Geographical Society Magazine

Geographical: the Royal Geographical Society MagazineIn my opinion, this is the best Geographical magazine around. The images are as good as they come, the articles are amazing. The style is popular enough so that everyone can read them, and they have enough information so that everyone will learn something from them. Every issue has some biographical articles, some on recent expeditions, some on nature, some historical, and plenty of book reviews. In short, this magazine gives you a little bit of everything. What I really like about it is that it does not shy away from contorversial or serious issues. Here we can read about unkown genocides, natural disasters, or climate change. Geographical does dare to take sides in political issues. It is not for someone that is only out for a leisurely read. It is for us who want a leisurly way to keep informed!

I knew the magazine wouldn't be unbiased, but I wasn't expecting it to be so totally overun with global warming propaganda. I expected a lot of articles to have a slant towards conservationism and environmentalism, but it seems this one issue permeates almost the whole perspective. It's ultimately nothing more than a pretentious advocacy rag. Journalism becomes irresponsible when it passes over meaningful information and facts to deliver nothing more than an appeal from subsequently uninformed perspective. I give it two stars because about 1/10th of the articles are actually interesting and it's not totall overrun with advertisements, most of which are relevant or related to global travel.

Buddhadharma

BuddhadharmaNamed for the mythical (?) and mystical kingdom in the East, Shambhala Publications is known for bringing some of the greatest and sometimes most obscure philosophical writings of Mankind to the attention of the general public. As part of its Dharma mission, the company markets several web portals and periodicals.

BUDDHADHARMA presents us with some of the best Buddhist writing available today. I have watched this magazine mature into an eminently readable publication, a sister magazine to SHAMBHALA SUN, but more focused on the whys and wherefores of Buddhist practice and the issues confronting serious practitioners today.

Does BUDDHADHARMA have shortcomings? Well, in my opinion, a few, some of which it shares with SHAMBHALA SUN:

Like SHAMBHALA SUN, BUDDHADHARMA is a "slick" magazine chock full of ads and promotions for meditation retreats and other expensive products. I know ad space pays the bills, and I like money as much as any capitalist can, but the nakedly exploitative nature of some of the ads is troubling. Chogyam Trungpa, the founder of Shambhala, wrote a seminal work named CUTTING THROUGH SPIRITUAL MATERIALISM, and I have to wonder what he would think of the Dharma practices of Ford Motor or the "Geshe Lama Gogolak Awareness Retreat of Telluride Colorado (only $10,000 per day, minimum twenty days)."

Having made these objections, I will quickly add that these issues are raised by way of promoting awareness among potential subscribers, not as a critique of the magazine itself. People can and do benefit from Dharma education, training, retreats, and practice aids. BUDDHADHARMA only runs ads, it doesn't judge them. Thus, insofar as this reviewer goes, BUDDHADHARMA is a valuable resource in the propagation of the Buddhadharma.

True Crime

True CrimeTrue Crime is the non-fiction crime magazine for stories that pull readers into a world of victims and criminals. The stories are not for the faint-hearted these are true crime stories featuring some of the worst crimes and criminals in history, mainly centered in the US and UK, but also covering other countries in Europe, such as France and Germany. Some of these stories are penned by renowned true crime authors and each featured story is accompanied by actual photographs of the crime scene, the victim/s, the accused etc.

For those who love true crime, this and other true crime magazines are definitely recommended. The only problem I have faced since moving to the States is the difficulty in obtaining these magazines in bookstores [and the subscription price isn't exactly cheap either!]. But the magazine definitely makes for riveting reading!

My mother is a great fan of true crime stories, I remember her reading the American version of this magazine when I was growing up so was quite happy to find this available for her. Because of her health problems mother does not get out much anymore and spends her time reading and watching TV. She especially likes collections of short true crime reports, as exemplified by this magazine. This publication is expensive ($100 for 2 years) but a real treat for her.
