Nice magazine. It is a bit high brow and uptown for my cowboy, but he likes it anyhow. It's real purty.

Was told it would be like Sep 29 before 1st issue arrived.

1st issue arrived July 3rd.

I gave this to my Father-in-law for his birthday and he loved it. A subscription I had purchased earlier was coming to my home and I took him a couple of copies and he (who never calls) called to tell me he had read them from cover to cover and wanted to make sure that his gift subscription would be coming to his home. The first one is to arrive between June 27 and July 5th. I sure hope he gets it in the mail.

I knew seeing the words "cowboy" that I was destined to see at least one guy free of all blemishes and signs of work, dressed up in fancy designer clothing, and topped off with a cowboy hat. I was right. That model shows up every couple of times in the magazine's ads. Kind of sad that most people think that is what they should look at when working on a ranch.

Luckily, the magazine does have articles of "traditional," hard-working cowboysold and young, male and female. The magazine itself is pretty slim with articles that are not very in-depth. There are definitely a lot of adverstisements and marketing of apparel is prominent unfortunately. Definitely not burtsing with crisp pictures of rodeos or cutting horses either, but there are adequate pictures to accompany every article. But for the price it is an interesting portal into the world and livlihood of the dying cowboy. The first issue was shipping to me two weeks after ordering, but I would still order it 4 weeks ahead of the time you want to receive it.

And despite my lackluster review of this magazine, I want to reassure people that you do learn a few things from this magazine. I've learnt already about famous cowboys, how to evaluate a horse's hocks, and even read about ranches in Hawaii that I never knew even existed. For the price, I'd suggest expanding your realm of knowledge of The West and subscribing to this magazine for at least a year.

Seventeen (1-year auto-renewal)

I decided to get this for my daughter who is twelve after reading reviews from other customers saying it was pretty much fashion, hair, and makeup because there are so few options for a tween girl. She has outgrown the American Girl magazines at this point and wanted something a little more mature, but I didn't expect it to be so mature!

I had this magazine as a teen and really liked it. For the most part, the reviews were right. My daughter looks at the hair styles and clothes and might read an article or two, but one thing has really changed! Luckily I looked through the magazine before I gave it to her because there were all kinds of questions about sex in one article. The questions consisted of where to find the "g-spot" and if you were still a virgin after anal sex! That definitely wasn't in there when I once read this magazine.

I understand it's called Seventeen for a reason, but I just wish someone had informed me of the sexual nature some of the articles may have before I ordered it. So,I now just go through the magazines before she sees them and tear out anything she shouldn't be reading. She gets the censored version.

I think that Seventeen is an excellent magazine for teenagers. The health section is great, fashion tips are fabulous, and anything that happens to be about sex is informative.

Sex Articles: Come on people, if you want to keep your daughters away from this stuff they might as well live in a convent. Your daughters are going to know way more than you think and better they hear it from some place that gives them the truth and not from a friend who means well but just doesn't know anything. Sure, there is nothing that says "DON'T HAVE SEX" but it gives girls what they need to hear and then your parenting will decide when and what they do.

Health: These days there isn't a girl around who doesn't want to be stick thin. It isn't their fault, it's the media. The good thing about Seventeen is that it shows girls instead of how to loose weight, how to be healthy. They have great food ideas, exersize plans and an over all healthy attitude towards weight loss and body image.

Fashion: Seventeen has one of the best fashion sections out of all of the teen magazines. Yeah, it is fun to see the occasional Chanel or Marc Jacobs outfit in a magazine but not when it plasters the pages. Seventeen suggests affordable outfit ideas from drop-dead-gorgeous sling backs to don't-you-wish-you-knew-me jeans. Their "Splurge" outfits are just the right amount of occasional fantasy.

Fun: They've got their share of cutesy quizzes and embarrassing stories because they realize that teens aren't adults and they still need a little childish fun. There are decoration tips, organization advice and some of the best stress reliever ideas I've ever seen.

Note: They do have a regular article called "17 Real Life" which is usually okay with the occasional disturbing story. However, they do have a "17 Warning" on the bad ones and you could simply request that your daughter, if she's young, not read those. I highly suggest this magazine.

To those who say that this magazine is mindless and turns your daughters into airheads I suggest you hear me out. Nothing turns your daughter into an "airhead." Perhaps an unhealthy dose of magazine reading and web surfing will make them slightly superfical but it is just a phase and will pass guaranteed. However, a monthly fashion magazine does not melt the brain nor fry brain cells. In fact, it probably does more good than it does damage.

I've been getting this magazine since before I was 17. I was at my grandmother's house for some holiday, and my cousin was flipping through old issues of Seventeen. I decided that I wanted a subscription that day, and I've been getting them since, saving every single issue (or trying!), and loving that I always get at least one piece of mail a month. Now I am 21, and I can't make myself quit my Seventeen. I don't really know why. I just personally love the magazine, and, sure, there are some issues where I don't read as much as I wish I could. But I probably will continue Seventeen for a lot longer. If anything, it is a nice trip down memory lane to look in an old Seventeen (from 1995) and read about old movies, old stars and old clothes. Almost like reading an old yearbook.

For any teen wanting a great magazine, I would definately recommend this one. It is fun, helpful and addicting.

In my opinion, Seventeen is the best magazine for teen girls. I've been reading it on-and-off for four years now, but only recently began to read it again. It's not some childish, boy obsessed, teenybopper magazine. There are some great, monthly articles, like "When I Was 17," "Solve My Problem," "My Life," "Traumarama" and of course, horoscopes, entertainment, fashion, beauty and more. The true-life stories they feature are really interesting, also. They recently did an intriguing article about emotional abuse.

A couple years ago, I would've said that Cosmo Girl was the best magazine for teenagers. Unfortunately, it's gone downhill and has little substance left. If you want an interesting, fun and informative teen magazine, look no further than Seventeen. After all, it's been out for nearly sixty years. They're clearly doing something right!

I was intrigued by the magazine's statement that they are trying to help teens "make peace with their bodies" and not be so obsessed with their appearance. Then I read the covers of the 10 or so magazines sampled. Paleeeeeeease!

"How to get a great butt" "how to have perfect skin" "how to get a great body" 95% of the cover headlines were about meeting the beaty ideal. Oh, yeah, there was the headline about how to "flirt the right way" and how to be a random hot guy's "regular hook up." I guess those are the more substantive articles.

It's amazing how the magazine has made such strides since when I was a teen.

Penthouse (1-year)

I was thinking about purchasing a subscription to Penthouse magazine because my fiance didn't object to the idea. Penthouse was the first "dirty" magazine I purchased when I turned 18 back in 2002. I was very pleased with the content, mostly pictorially, when compared to the much tamer fair of the Playboys I had hidden in a box in my room.

By the time I entered college, I had six issues of Penthouse. I had also discovered that 90% of the internet (which I hadn't had access to until I went to college) was comprised of pornographic websites, and that you could get a lot of the content for free (especially just women showing their private parts). I gave three of the issues to a friend (who's girlfriend blocked porn on his computer) and still have three somewhere in a box.

Enough with the back story. Today, I purchased the July 2008 issue of Penthouse. Much to my chagrin, pictorially it is equivalent to the Playboys of the mid-to-late nineties. All you get is a little exposure of feminine private parts (as compared to Playboy now, where you get breasts and perhaps the top part of a well-trimmed and air brushed bush). Yes, some shots are spread eagle, but not with the true intent of that position. In the older issues I had, before Guccione sold the magazine in 2005, you got spreading, toying, masturbation, waterworks, and even some penetration (I can do without the latter...just looking for the women).

Even semi-tasteful smut was dying in the late nineties, mostly due to the efforts of censorship groups. This killed the market for Penthouse by eliminating its presence on military base exchange stores and other stores around the country. It forced Guccione to eventually file for bankruptcy and sell Penthouse in 2005. The $8 newsstand price didn't help the magazine sales and still doesn't.

On the cover of Penthouse today, you'll see a small Support Our Troops ribbon. I have no problem with that. I support the troops. I have friends involved in the Iraq Conflict. I chose to be an engineer instead of following them over there.

It's not about keeping the image of the magazine anymore. It's all about sales and marketing (competing with Playboy for the softcore market). For that reason, I say that Penthouse has sold out. I'll still enjoy the Penthouse magazines I have that are dated before 2005, but I won't purchase any new issues or get a subscription (even at $2.50/issue, it's not worth it).

Penthouse used to be midcore. Playboy was softcore. Hustler was hardcore. Now, Penthouse is softcore, Playboy is fluffcore, and Larry Flynt still won't budge to political pressure because he's not a sellout, so Hustler is still hardcore with a decent price tag.

The only thing that has remained unchanged are the articles targeted to the 18-30 crowd, but even Playboy is catching up on that front. The 30-50 crowd just isn't buying the fluffcore magazines anymore. They're buying high-priced hookers instead. If you're in it for the targeted articles (in which case, consider buying a magazine where articles are the focus instead), then go ahead and get it. It'll make more sense to you than Playboy. You could always just go to G4TV.com or EGM to find out what you "need" to know about popular culture.

Penthouse still uses relatively unknown Porn Stars. You can find better photos of them for free on the internet. This month it is Carli Banks, Shawna Lenee, Sonny Leone, and revisits from other previous Penthouse pets in mock lesbian scenarios where nothing happens.

So, that's more than my two cents...it's my waste of $8. I'm glad it wasn't $30.

This magazine is alot like playboy with three differences. First: Twice the price. Second: Less articles. The articles they do have are not as interesting or well written. Third: Shows a little more of the ladies.

Not as hardcore as Hustler and not as softcore as playboy. It's really in a bizarre middle ground where if you want a good magazine to read (that happens to have nude woman) then you'd go with Playboy and if you're looking for a good magazine to Umm, "read" *wink wink* then you'd go with Hustler.

Penthouse tries to reach both those demographics and falls short to both.

Still, beautiful naked woman, so three stars.

Macleans Magazine

Though the magazine is owned by Rogers corp. which I hate very much, the magazine is great. It was once a lesser known and hard leftie magazine. These days it is among the finest in the world. Mark Steyn shines among their columnist. Andrew Coyne is now a well known author for his great works. The interviews in the magazine are informative and bright. All in all, this is one magazine I am proud to be subscribed to. IMO, it ranks among the finest magazine in North America. Better than Newsweek magazine, if you will, and you should know that it is sued by the Islamic Jihadists in Canada. I like it so much. 5/5

It took the full eight weeks to start arriving, but it was worth the wait. I enjoy learning things from outside my previous experience; Maclean's is going to expand my knowledge set quite a bit, as well as providing a hard copy to keep and the sort of commentary the online newspapers just don't run to. Thanks for giving me access to something I simply could not find otherwise.

A magazine that is written by many National Post alumni, I think Maclean's does a decent job with its Canadian and international content. Considering it is one of the few national magazines in the country, there's little competition, if at all. Its ideology comes across as mainstream, but for the most part it is decidedly right-wing, which is unfortunate because of its position as the virtually lone national political magazine. But Maclean's will never be capable of matching the breadth and talented writing in American magazines like Newsweek or Time, who recently transfered its remaining costumers over to Maclean's. While it is occasionally interesting, most of its articles are rather forgettable. If you're looking for Canadian politics and general interest, than you might be best served here. But if you don't mind foreign publications, definitely look elsewhere.

If you like Paula, and many folks do, you will enjoy this magazine. They are light and enjoyable reading. However, the magazine really is giving the reader a "taste of Savannah" and a look into Paula's life...perhaps a bit too much. They are not pure cooking magazines. Also, if you have all of Paula's cookbooks, you may have the recipes already. Hopefully as the magazine progresses, there will be less of Paula's life / house / family / etc, and more new recipes.

I agree 100% with the comments already made that the price listed here is not a good value. I got my subscription from the magazine's website for far less. The price listed here is comparable to that of magazines that come monthly (Paula's is once every two months) and that are much larger. Paula's magazine is about 1/3 the pages of a "Cooking Light"

Paula's magazine is wonderful...unlike what one of the reviewers wrote about the recipes being bland. They are all from Paula's cookbooks, new recipes or from her friends. NONE are bland...they are Pure Paula and all have the wonderful southern flare she is known for. I have been fortunate enough to meet Paula in person and was at a recent taping of her new t.v. show Paula's Party...this magazine is just another wonderful extention of her many talents!

This is a great magazine for quilters. Each issue conatins several projects... a mix of both traditional and art quilts. My current issue (April/May 2011) contains an article on airbrushing fabric that I thought was really interesting. This magazine also contains news as related to the quilting world (exhibits, competition results, quilter's biographies, etc.).

Before subscribing to this magazine, go to their website first. Sometimes they have bonus items they'll give you with your subscription. Even if you don't subscribe to the magazine, you can find lots of free patterns on their website.

I read this magazine from cover to cover. I have subscribed to many; Quilters Newsletter Digest is my all time favorite.

Bass Player

If you are a bassist and you even need to read a review to figure out if this is the right mag for you, best get your head checked! I have subscribed to Bass Player since 1992 and will keep renewing my subcription until I am so old I have to have my assistant read me all the features by my craftmatic lounger. Forget Fox news, Bass Player is fair and balanced, covering everyone from the sad passing of NHOP (greatest upright player of all time) to all the standards like Jaco and Vic. Dont think that you little mall-core kids are not rep'd...all the nu-metal low enders are there as well, even though they suck the rust from under my fretwire. I have always respected this magazine and the writers seem like family...go get this now fool! word.

I ordered this mag in January and here it is, April, and I still haven't received the first issue. I have been on the phone with Synapse and they told me TWICE that they would get back to me with info on my subscription within 24 hours and I still haven't heard from them. The mag is great but the subscription service seems far below Amazon's usual service.

While BP does do the occasional article on a straight-ahead jazz player or upright player, most of the editorial content (and what seesm like 90% of the cover photos) are deoted to the tattooed, pierced and punked up shredder of the month. Sure, there's actually a colum devoted to upright playingsort ofbut overall this is a magazine for young rockers. For them, it's great. For me... I'm still looking.
