Cleveland Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Cleveland MagazineI have picked up this magazine a couple of times before where ever I might find them. So I am sitting in my doctor's office and there I am reading the magazine. All of sudden it hits me, "why don't I have a subscription to this magazine"?

Cleveland Magazine is a must have for people in Northeast Ohio if you want to know what is going on. I love it because of how it breaks down the restaurants by type of food, price, location, and even what type of credit cards they accept. This is great for anyone who loves to dine out and is looking for something new to try. It is always a great source for business that you never heard of but are right down the street. It lets you know what festivals are coming up, what out of the way events are going on, and where to party is going to be this month! If you live in Northeast Ohio and you want to get out on the town and try new things or just find out where the hot spots are you need to pick up this magazine, you wont be disappointed!

Solid guide to what's going on in Cleveland as well as well-written articles about the region. If you're moving to Cleveland, pick up a copy so that you begin to understand the wonderful opportunities this region offers.

Cleveland Magazine is a nice mix of culture, restaurant information, history, and current happenings in the city of Cleveland. I have been a subscriber for over three years and read the magazine cover to cover every month. If you want to know what is new in Cleveland, this is a good, enjoyable source.

I ordered Cleveland Magazine months ago and never received any copies. When I inquired about the missing magazine, customer service repeatedly told me that it would be "five business days" to investigate my request. As you can guess, I'm still waiting.

Femme Actuelle

Femme ActuelleI absolutely adore this magazine! I first learned of Femme Actuelle in 1994 while studying French in university. A friend in France would send her copies to me in California. The magazine covers all aspects of real French life, focusing on issues important to ever woman (and a good number of men) in France. This is not a glamour magazine, filled with haute couture or haute cuisine that most woman would not wear or prepare. This is an everyday magazine, filled with fashion and food recipes that you can follow with ease, all rooted in proper French style and sensibility. Each weekly publication gives the reader a window into every day French life and is almost as good as being in France. Well almost!

My husband bought this magazine for me last XMas, and ordered it before Dec 20, 2006.

The magazine was supposed to arrive 4 to 6 weeks after. I called numerous times as by the end of Feb, still no news of the magazine.

The staff at Amazon Magazine Service was non efficient, clueless and rude.

I received my 1st magazine on April 8.

Since then, the magazine does not even arrive on time or close to on time. I usually get it 1 month to 1 month and half later than the due date.

We paid about $175 for a weekly magazine that I could get at a much lower rate through relatives in France and much faster too. So just be aware if you plan to get Femme Actuelle, find another company and make sure the magazine price includes in the price a non "snail mail" delivery. The magazine itself cost about 56 euros ($79) and with the rest of the money they make, they can not figure it out in 1st class mail

Very sad, as Femme Actuelle is a very good and fun magazine. Not again will I order a magazine through Amazon.

Penthouse (1-year)

PenthouseI was thinking about purchasing a subscription to Penthouse magazine because my fiance didn't object to the idea. Penthouse was the first "dirty" magazine I purchased when I turned 18 back in 2002. I was very pleased with the content, mostly pictorially, when compared to the much tamer fair of the Playboys I had hidden in a box in my room.

By the time I entered college, I had six issues of Penthouse. I had also discovered that 90% of the internet (which I hadn't had access to until I went to college) was comprised of pornographic websites, and that you could get a lot of the content for free (especially just women showing their private parts). I gave three of the issues to a friend (who's girlfriend blocked porn on his computer) and still have three somewhere in a box.

Enough with the back story. Today, I purchased the July 2008 issue of Penthouse. Much to my chagrin, pictorially it is equivalent to the Playboys of the mid-to-late nineties. All you get is a little exposure of feminine private parts (as compared to Playboy now, where you get breasts and perhaps the top part of a well-trimmed and air brushed bush). Yes, some shots are spread eagle, but not with the true intent of that position. In the older issues I had, before Guccione sold the magazine in 2005, you got spreading, toying, masturbation, waterworks, and even some penetration (I can do without the latter...just looking for the women).

Even semi-tasteful smut was dying in the late nineties, mostly due to the efforts of censorship groups. This killed the market for Penthouse by eliminating its presence on military base exchange stores and other stores around the country. It forced Guccione to eventually file for bankruptcy and sell Penthouse in 2005. The $8 newsstand price didn't help the magazine sales and still doesn't.

On the cover of Penthouse today, you'll see a small Support Our Troops ribbon. I have no problem with that. I support the troops. I have friends involved in the Iraq Conflict. I chose to be an engineer instead of following them over there.

It's not about keeping the image of the magazine anymore. It's all about sales and marketing (competing with Playboy for the softcore market). For that reason, I say that Penthouse has sold out. I'll still enjoy the Penthouse magazines I have that are dated before 2005, but I won't purchase any new issues or get a subscription (even at $2.50/issue, it's not worth it).

Penthouse used to be midcore. Playboy was softcore. Hustler was hardcore. Now, Penthouse is softcore, Playboy is fluffcore, and Larry Flynt still won't budge to political pressure because he's not a sellout, so Hustler is still hardcore with a decent price tag.

The only thing that has remained unchanged are the articles targeted to the 18-30 crowd, but even Playboy is catching up on that front. The 30-50 crowd just isn't buying the fluffcore magazines anymore. They're buying high-priced hookers instead. If you're in it for the targeted articles (in which case, consider buying a magazine where articles are the focus instead), then go ahead and get it. It'll make more sense to you than Playboy. You could always just go to G4TV.com or EGM to find out what you "need" to know about popular culture.

Penthouse still uses relatively unknown Porn Stars. You can find better photos of them for free on the internet. This month it is Carli Banks, Shawna Lenee, Sonny Leone, and revisits from other previous Penthouse pets in mock lesbian scenarios where nothing happens.

So, that's more than my two cents...it's my waste of $8. I'm glad it wasn't $30.

This magazine is alot like playboy with three differences. First: Twice the price. Second: Less articles. The articles they do have are not as interesting or well written. Third: Shows a little more of the ladies.

Not as hardcore as Hustler and not as softcore as playboy. It's really in a bizarre middle ground where if you want a good magazine to read (that happens to have nude woman) then you'd go with Playboy and if you're looking for a good magazine to Umm, "read" *wink wink* then you'd go with Hustler.

Penthouse tries to reach both those demographics and falls short to both.

Still, beautiful naked woman, so three stars.

Home Education Magazine

Home Education MagazineIn 1990 I started homeschooling my three younger children and continued on until they received their high school diplomas in 1998. For all but two years of that time, all of it as a snail-mail-dependent, pre-overseas-Internet military family in Europe, my regular homeschooling support was Home Education Magazine.

Although they didn't know it, the magazine's columnists and writers held my hand through my ups and downs, gave me ideas when I needed them, and reflected back to me many of my own situations but with a twist that always gave me insight. I found mailing information for catalogs from which to order our materials, and even a school for when the kids got into high school and we wanted transcripts and diplomas. Every two months the mail clerk delivered my homeschooling lifeline. Other magazines had information, HEM had heart.

For the two years when a support group was available, the magazine provided inspiration for the newsletter I produced, and is continues to do so now for my website.

The homeschool-support world has grown with the expansion of online connections and my kids are grown, yet my subscription continues. It just might come in handy with the grandkids.

The only home education magazine that includes the entire homeschooling community offering great how-to advice for everyone from beginners to experienced homeschoolers who have been educating their own children for years. There is a lot of seasoned advice for encouraging all children to learn and grow into capable, well-rounded, well-educated adults. There simply is no better home education magazine for parents who want to learn about homeschooling or find information and resources.

My oldest "child" heads off to college this fall as a happy, well adjusted, always-homeschooled young man. Home Education Magazine was the first homeschooling magazine that I subscribed to and it is the ONLY subscription that I never let lapse....and I've kept every single issue! I have two more children who are still homeschooling and it is as relevant now as when I first found it when my oldest was just a toddler. I highly recommend it as the best all-around homeschooling magazine out there!

If you are looking for a no nonsense magazine, one that isn't out there to promote a narrow viewpoint, then HEM is the one for you. The articles cover a wide range of subjects of interest to homeschoolers, moms, dads and kidlets! If it is happening in homeschooling it will be covered. Just starting out? Lots of good advise. Need specific information? Lots of good references.

If you only buy one magazine, this is the one to buy!

Grazia - England

Grazia - EnglandGreat print quality and delivered weekly on time, a fun way to stay in the UK fashion and gossip loop.

Best weekly glossy on the shelves. I buy it every week to peruse over smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. The articles are deliciously light and there are loads of fashion photos and pack shots. Yeah, I know. But let's be honest, if you're buying a glossy for enlightenment or any real understanding...you're doing something wrong.

I'll stick with wonderful product pics.

Black Enterprise (1-year auto-renewal)

Black EnterpriseI am an avid reader of Black Enterprise (BE)and have been since I was in high school and to date it is still the most inspiring magazine EVER. Its filled with relevant news articles, entrepreneurial sight, career advice, financial planning, investment, real estate and so so so much more. Following the principles in BE can lead you on the path to success; financially, spiritually, and familial. This magazine is the best investment you can make. I challenge you to read EVER article even the one's less appealing because they stimulate your mind and broaden your horizons. KUDOS to the GRAVES legacy for all the continued inspiration.

I first read this magazine at my grandfather's house. As I grew up I was a regular reader of my dad's subscription and when I went to college Black Enterprise came with me. My daughter and son-in-law have a subscription in their home and I talk to my 7 year old grandson about articles I read all the time. It is important that he understand the options he has and Black Enterprise makes those options visible.

Well written and timely articles make this a must read for all households.
