New Jersey Monthly (1-year auto-renewal)

New Jersey MonthlyI'm not a big fan of New Jersey Monthly. For one thing, it is jam packed with ads. Also, even though it's supposed to be about the entire state of NJ, it focuses heavily on North Jersey. I think South Jersey Magazine has more interesting articles covering things people really want to read about -unlike NJ Magazine, which wastes endless amounts of space on things like so and so's million dollar kitchen renovation (who cares?). Sometimes I feel like I'm reading "Cribs: The Magazine". Maybe some people are into this stuff, but for the average New Jerseyan, I wouldn't recommend it. Lastly -and this really bugs me -I saw one of the editors on a local news program talking about "The Diner Issue" where NJ Magazine ranked top NJ diners. When asked how they came up with the list, said editor did not reply that they polled readers, researched online reviews by real customers, or sent out teams of taste testers to as many diners as possible. Instead, she answered that the magazine staff simply picked them. NICE.

As a transplant to NJ I looked forward to this magazine every month to learn about my adopted state. It was a terrific guide to the state's history, current events, people, places to explore, etc.

In recent years the magazine has become a guide to the best decorators, doctors, plastic surgeons, lawyers, trendy restaurants, expensing housing, etc. If I used to spend an hour or two reading each issue I now spend 15 minutes.

I have need a subscriber for more than 10 years and now I may not renew -Bob

Informative magazine however there are too many advertisements. I wish it had more information then it actually does. It was truly a disappointment.

Lots of information about New Jersey, past, present and future. Great recommendations for things to do, places to visit and eat. Only negative is that it has too much medical advertising.

Cookbook Digest

Cookbook DigestI was hoping to reconnect with the wonderful Cookbook Digest of 15 years ago. This is not it. The old mag had 50+ recipes from half a dozen cookbooks in each edition, and there were always some good ones. This has maybe a dozen at most per issue and in 6 months I've not yet found one I wanted to try. Really just no good. Sorry.

This cookbook magazine contains a nice balance of recipies. It selects the best of all new cookbooks.

Your Dog (1-year auto-renewal)

Your DogMrs. Spudman started a subscription to this canine-centered publication about a year ago, and I recently discovered it myself. She passes on the issues (once read) to our veterinarian. I like this little newsletter that's filled with readable articles about behavior, diet, and health. The most recent issue before me has articles about: a dog's incredible sense of smell, adjusting puppies to our world, dental health, dieting down your dog. I read about a Tuft's researcher's discovery that some canine "diet" kibble has more calories than regular kibble.

Ever see the body condition system chart in your veterinarian's office? It portrays sample pictures of dogs that are too thin, ideal, and too heavy. That very chart is reproduced in the current issue. Sorry, Dr.Dearing, but we're keeping this one.

I like that the articles are very readable, pertinent and diverse. The editor-in-chief is a veterinarian and all articles are written by or approved by veterinarians. Each issue is on the thin side ( current one is 16 pages); the thinness results from the absence of advertisements. There are none here, resulting in a publication physique that I consider ideal according to the Spudman publication fitness chart.

Subscribing to Your Dog will make you a well-informed dog parent and help support in a small way the Tufts University veterinary research. Visit the Your Dog web page to find a few additional articles posted online with large print and color photographs.

the information in this magazine is reserched at the Tufts Veterinary School. It is not a fluffy, pretty publication, but is full of reliable information and product review information. I love it.

This a very high quality publication. It is only a few pages long so not a magazine if that's what you're looking for. Packed with info. and articles by professionals. Strongly encourage you to get this if you're in the field.

Written in language you can easily understand. Every issue offers info on a number of different topics. Some may not pertain to your pet at the time, but save them in a binder. Sometimes something will come up later down the road and I'll remember seeing it mentioned in a past issue. This publication always has up to date info on the topics covered. Sometimes you may suprise your vet with your knowledge on a particular issue -priceless!

Zymurgy

ZymurgyFor the $38 membership, you get the magazine for free when you join the AHA ;

The magazine is great if you are past the beginner stage of beermaking. It can be a bit on the technical side, but if you love making beer, then it's great information.

I have to agree that a)this is an essential for the homebrewer who wants to learn more and b)that it could be better.

I love homebrewing and for me being able to read little tips here and there both improves what I do, and also keeps my ego in check and reminds me NOT to take out the loan on the brewery just yet. Zymurgy is good to answer questions and generally keep a pulse on the hobby.

That being said, it can be sometimes repetitive (and they even seem to repeat themselves sometimes!) but usually the letters and other completely novel things will counteract the repetitious ideas.

All of that being said, I completely agree that subscribing to this magainze in any way other than joining AHA is silly.

Buy Zymurgy Now

Must-have for those who brew. Great recipes included and you can use your membership card at microbreweries for discounts. Well done, Zymurgy.

My only real complaint is they're not monthly issues. Zymurgy is very informative and relevant for every homebrewer whether you brew solo like me or in clubs and like to compete. Highly recommended.

Fleur Creatif - French edCutting-edge floristry design ideas, demos and info. Really gets the creative juices flowing. Beautifully illustrated. From the center of the european floral industry, Belgium. Features award-winning guest artists, flower care, young talent, themes according to the season. I've never thrown an issue away!

This is an outstanding resource for anyone interested in floral design. The arrangements range from elegant to exotic. Each design lists the various botanicals needed for the arrangement and tips for achieving the desired effect. The photography is detailed and first rate. As an added plus, advertising is kept to a bare minimum.

I have subscribed for a year and found some of the design are too artistic which is hard to translate for everyday design.

The designs tend to go very achitectural. They are beautiful but I wish they can come a bit closer to a everyday level. It is a good source to get top edgy trends but cannot rely on it to get ideas that you can use tomorrow.

Crappie World (1-year auto-renewal)

Crappie WorldI very seldom received an issue of the magazine. I renewed my subscription against my better jusgment and received a total of one (1) magazine during an eight month period yet received another renewal form. They did send me a check for issues I never received. It is a very good magazine, but it is much easier and less frustrating to buy directly off the newsstand. Wal-Mart carries the magazine, so I can obtain the magazine on a regular basis.

I subscribed to this magazine last year for Father's Day for my husband, and we've only received 1 magazine!

Like the previous poster said, good luck on finding a phone number!

My husband does like the magazine however.

Buy Crappie World (1-year auto-renewal) Now

Let Natcom get your address and you'll need a bigger mailbox. Every few weeks they send you a notice telling you that you need to renew your subscription. If you get any of their other pubs, and have been getting them for a while, you'll need a tracking system to know when you REALLY need to renew. Their magazines are just o.k. so I won't be renewing because I'm sick of their harassment. Oh, don't expect to find a phone # for customer service either. Check out the In-fisherman pubs and their "Crappie Wisdom", "Bass Wisdom", etc for a thorough and professional presentation of useful info and illustrations. Happy Hookin'!

This is a great crappie magazine. It does come sporatically. One month we received 3 magazines and haven't recieved one now for 3 months. If you don't mind the inconsistancy the magazine is great.

Want Crappie World (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

I subscribed to Crappie World for four years. The previous post is correct. They will send you a subscription renewal notice about every three months...even when you just renewed! They promise all kinds of free stuff for renewing. I haven't received anything yet. Deceptive trade practices at best. And yes, your mailbox will runeth over with junk mail. I'd love to subscribe again but I'm not willing to do business with that kind of folks.

There is a lot of good info in the publication. However, they often try to test the bounds of extreme fishing techniques (and practicality) as some of the articles are off the wall. Tim Huffman's parts are always good down-to-earth advise that can actually work. Wish he'd hook up with a more reputable publication.

Modern Railways

Modern RailwaysFollowing Mr. Henry Posner's recommendation about this magazine (and a sample copy ordered from Ian Allen), I decided to spend the big bucks to purchase a subscription and have not been disappointed. Of course, you'll have to brush up on your British geography to understand where they are (plus the problem of them using real English instead of whatever we speak over here). This magazine does a wonderful job of demonstrating what the English expect of their passenger and freight trains with its highly illustrated articles and many news events. I would highly recommend this magazine for anyone interested in the world of railways outside North America.

Trailer Life (1-year auto-renewal)

Trailer LifeWe're newbies to the RV lifestyle. This is a great magazine to become acquainted with all you need to learn. The advertisements are very informative...and help to make you aware of different products on the market that you may or may not need. The articles are full of good all-around tips and travel ideas. I'll be renewing our subscription......again.

I cannot begin to tell you how helpful this informative magazine has been for a newbie travel trailer camper such as myself.

I highly recommend "Trailer Life" to all campers that own a travel trailer, or is thinking about purchasing one.

You will be glad that you ordered it, and the price is right.

The only downside for me about this magazine is when I am finished reading my last months issue, I can't wait to read the next months issue.

The articles are very informative. I look forward to the maintenance and repair advice provided to the readers. The reviews of State and National Parks are great when looking for new places to visit.

I'm not sure if it's the format or what but it seems that the articles are buried in advertising. I can easily page right by an article when I'm looking for it. I really don't think there's any more advertising in this mag than any others; it just seems like it. I believe if the articles were presented more prominently, it would be better. The articles are good.

Mpls St Paul

Mpls St PaulThis used to be a pretty good magazine, but now it panders to the botox and tooth whitening advertisers to such an extent that the editorial side of this publication consists of nothing more than self-congratulatory "aren't the Twin Cities special" pap that could only appeal to wealthy, white, 60-year-old suburban Twin Cities women with self-esteem issues.

It's cover-to-cover milquetoast, serving no other purpose than to showcase all those plastic surgeons' ads on their waiting room coffee tables. This publication is just vapid and uninspired nothingness.

Go Blue Wolverine

Go Blue WolverineThis is by far the best Michigan magazine I've read. Very informative, full of high quality photos, and is ideal for when you don't have a game to watch! It keeps you updated on recruits and stats and is just full of great information that a Michigan fan craves! This Magazine makes it helpful to follow all of Michigan's sports so if you're like me and only watch their Football games, or Basketball, you can still keep up with scores and highlights of all the other sporting events you miss.

Unique Homes (1-year auto-renewal)

Unique HomesI love to pick up a copy of this magazine from time to time and look at the mansions for sale, the horse farms for sale, the exotic islands for sale, because, quite frankly, I'm never going to get out of this studio apartment. But that's okay *smile* I'm happy and I love dreaming. For anyone else who loves beautiful homes, or dreams of your own estate on....oh...a thousand acres or so complete with a forest and babbling brooks, this will be fun for you too.

This is the home magazine of all home magazines!! I love looking at the pictures and shopping for houses. The pictures are clear and you can find a home in any state you choose. Also, enjoy reading it just before the lottery numbers come up on Friday nights. Very highly recommended! lathamdoxey.com (Author of "Sunset Point")

Hadassah Magazine

Hadassah MagazineThe articles are interesting and the money goes for a great cause. I highly recommend it.

This magazine is beautifully printed and illustrated. The print is

large and easy to read. ( Years ago, it was a large-tabloid size,

news-print affair....but, thank goodness, it has become more stream-

lined, and....even if there is less info in it, at least it is of

a paper type more ameniable to people reading and keeping it! )

The articles have toned down as well...they are now more centrist, and

some articles even have an Arab perspective or two, a sympathetic

and Humanistic view. This is all to the good...as the stridency of

years past was something very difficult for me to read.

However....HADASSAH officially calls itself: "HADASSAH INTERNATIONAL"

-or at least it does in its excellent "YOUTUBE" videos... I always expected at least half the material to be on what Jewish people -and particularly,

Jewish women -were doing around the world. But no...it is all slanted

to Israel, and what the people THERE are doing. Once in a while, a

four-to-eight page supplement, "THE AMERICAN SCENE", is added, (at least in the American edition....I can only hope other countries at least have supplements entitled: "The Canadian Scene", "The Canadian Scene", etc., as

well -but even this is not what I had always expected....quite the

reverse!) If HADASSAH, INTERNATIONAL is indeed an INTERNATIONAL Jewish organization and magazine....shouldn't

at least half of every issue be devoted to what Jewish women, WORLD-WIDE,

are doing?

In one issue, years ago, it was stated that "being Jewish, and FEELING

Jewish are two different things." I guess they were right in this.

Somehow, though born Jewish, I have never really FELT Jewish. I have

always felt simply HUMAN, like the rest of Humanity. To me, ethnic

differences pale beside the great simularities that make EVERYONE

A HUMAN Being. Perhaps HADASSAH Magazine would gain a wider reader-

ship -of both Jews and Gentiles -if they were to concentrate on

SIMULARITIES between Jews and others, and not the differences. In

dping so, HADASSAH could go a long way in fighting anti-semitism...

because it's real hard to hate people who are more similar than

differnt from you.

HADASSAH Magazine has come a long way from the xenophobic, almost

paranoid publication it was twenty years ago. I can only hope it

will continue -by showing more articles on WORLDWIDE Jewish life,

-and so reflect, more correctly, upon the name, 'HADASSAH, INTERNATIONAL", and also maybe even have a few articles on world-wide

Christian, Moslem, Buddist, and Humanist life. My rabbi

taught us that all people are equal under ONE God. Only God is different.

And we are ALL His equally-beautiful creations! This Humanistic side of

Judaism should be emphasized, I feel...in HADASSAH Magazine, and elsewhere. It can only serve to make everyone feel more comfortable with each other, world-wide!

Buy Hadassah Magazine Now

This is a magazine I grew up with. I always liked its warm inspiring articles about life in Israel. Usually it has excellent photography, and its articles are colorful.

It is a magazine which for years has been read with pleasure in thousands of Jewish homes.
