News Photographer

News PhotographerNot always happy, not often happy, this takes you inside news photography. This is the journal of NPPA. Some of the stories are feel good, some are gut wrenching sad bloated Jonestown bodies. Great member services, slight PC...stuff. Weegee would have used this publication as a tool and evidence of brotherhood among those who do news photography. PDN is a similar publication for a slightly different emphasis. Suggest you join NPPA ( magazine comes with membership ) and subscribe to PDN. PDN and News Photographer are the real thing.

Zymurgy

ZymurgyFor the $38 membership, you get the magazine for free when you join the AHA ;

The magazine is great if you are past the beginner stage of beermaking. It can be a bit on the technical side, but if you love making beer, then it's great information.

I have to agree that a)this is an essential for the homebrewer who wants to learn more and b)that it could be better.

I love homebrewing and for me being able to read little tips here and there both improves what I do, and also keeps my ego in check and reminds me NOT to take out the loan on the brewery just yet. Zymurgy is good to answer questions and generally keep a pulse on the hobby.

That being said, it can be sometimes repetitive (and they even seem to repeat themselves sometimes!) but usually the letters and other completely novel things will counteract the repetitious ideas.

All of that being said, I completely agree that subscribing to this magainze in any way other than joining AHA is silly.

Must-have for those who brew. Great recipes included and you can use your membership card at microbreweries for discounts. Well done, Zymurgy.

My only real complaint is they're not monthly issues. Zymurgy is very informative and relevant for every homebrewer whether you brew solo like me or in clubs and like to compete. Highly recommended.

British Brides & Setting Up Home

British Brides & Setting Up HomeI love both versions of this magazine (The UK and the US). However, the UK version has more information as well as useful articles, and appeals more to me personally. I'm disappointed I cannot subscribe ( or request ) this magazine on the kindle fire.

Baseball Digest (1-year auto-renewal)

Baseball DigestThis magazine was a gift for my grandson, who really loves baseball! He received his first issue recently and told me he read it from cover to cover! Glad I ordered it for him.

This every-other-month magazine for the adult baseball purist who quivers for Spring Training to begin each year. The pages, printed on newspaper stock with limited black-and-white photos may not look too engaging, but the magazine has full statistics, opinions, lists, previews, prospects, etc. that allow the reader to keep tabs on players on all teams in both leagues. But my favorite parts are the oddities not obtainable in any other sports publication covering baseball. Idiosyncratic to a T, its editors don't toe the MLB line and you'll read anything from an independent piece on how the writers think the game can be improved to a proposal on revising how Elias Sports Bureau calculates some of its statistics. Every issue is laced with debatable topics for die-hard baseball fans without casting aspersions, like Mar/Apr's 2011 issue with a short list of the ten instances in which a player hit more home runs than first-base hits in a single season (Mark McGwire 5 times, Jose Bautista and Barry Bonds twice each) without explanation--even a mention of steroids. (And why Carlos Pena and Dave Kingman were on the list at all!?!) In the same 58-page issue, Rich Marazzi (rules consultant for 4 teams) details some of the weirdest plays of 2010 in a "Baseball Rules Corner," citing Alex Rios' "inside-the-jersey single" off 3B Brooks Conrad, the three-ball Xavier Paul walk issued by sleepy umpire Bruce Dreckman, and many more complicated fielding/running situations. While much of the writing is dry and sticks to the bare facts (rather than offering celebrity, psychological pieces on individual ballplayers), it is a table of dessert for the salivating, knowledgeable baseball fan. I guarantee that you won't find lists of "Most Runs Scored Before 35th Birthday, 1876-2010" or "Teams with Two Pitchers with 20 Saves Apiece" anywhere else. Or a detailed compendium of yearly deaths in the baseball world called "Necrology." On a different level, "Baseball Digest" is a fantastic resource for the fan (including an older kid) who wants all the teams' baseball stats and complete schedules, with info on rookies, etc. When I get each issue, I'm continually impressed with both what I've come to expect as well as the novel lists and articles that knock my socks off as I read each page!

This subscription is a renewal from last year for my 11 year old grandson. He is very active in sports, especially baseball. He says he loves the magazine and has every issue from last year so I renewed again just a few weeks ago. I am very pleased he is so involved in the magazine. He is an avid reader. I am not quite so pleased with the price. It is only 5 to 6 magazines per year for close to $40.

Super Street (1-year auto-renewal)

Super Street(I also wrote this to counter the ONE star rating it has, that is Definitely NOT DESERVED, the speed at which it gets to you is based apon the supplier, not the magazine. Plus reviews on products are meant for the products not the shipping speed. This magazine is a 4.5-5 star magazine all the way.)

This Magazine is one of the best! I have been reading this magazine since 2004 along with Modified Magazine, to be honest since 2004 the thickness of almost all car magazine isn't like it was in 2004, but that is directly effected by the current economy.

Content: Like any magazine you will have your Featured rides, normally there is about 3 or 4 on my current issue they have a 'Quickie' article which is a mini feature, (basically not good enough for a cover but still awesome.) The Cover article, an interview with some beginning JDM legends in America, a new car test drive review, and two more non cover car featrues that span about 4 pages.

Then you have Tech articles, some of these break things down to consumers so they can understand what/how to purchase and generally a project for the magazine.

Also they cover events, unfortunately there aren't a whole lot in the winter but when it begins to warm up there are more.

Throughout the magazine there is also different things like Editor letters, mail they receive about the magazine, different forms of car news (new cars, concepts, etc.), then tech Q&A, new products, and readers rides.

Not all that I listed is in there every issue but they are in a vast majority of the magazine's content through out the years.

First of all to the lady who rated this magazine at 1 star who only gave Amazon one month before writing a terrible review, it says clearly on the item "Usually ships in 6 to 10 weeks".

This is a great Street/Race/Enthusiast magazine.. Ive been into cars for only about 6 months now, but ive learned alot from these magazines, from looks to engines to intake and handling, this is one of the best magazines ive ever picked up, you wont want to lay it down untill your done reading it all.

I've gotten alot of car magazines but this one is the best. If you're into smaller cars (mostly imports) the imfo and subscriber car section is the best.

I renewed my subcription and rather than start sending the new subscription after the current one ran out, they sent two magazines for a while. Also, they stopped sending the magazine for a while, said they would make up for it but they didn't.

The only thing I was unhappy about with regard to this order is that I was not able to cancel it I made this particular order in error.

Herizons

HerizonsLike Ms and Bust, "Herizons" is a thoughtful, informative and entertaining magazine about the world from a female perspective. Their editorial office is located in Winnipeg so it has a Canadian focus, but they cover international issues. A recent issue featured a story on Nancy Ruth who is Canada's first openly lesbian senator. There were also stories on Kenyan women confronting violence, women's artistic sensibilities, an interview with poet and activist Nicole Brossard and much else. I often find other useful media resources in "Herizons" and important news such as Maude Barlow's efforts to protect water supplies from mining companies that are turning lakes into toxic dumps, as well as fighting the agenda of transnational corporations to privatize the world's water supply Flow (akaFlow:For Love of Water).

In a country as insulated and anti-feminist as the U.S. can be (with nationally syndicated talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh regularly referring to the advocates of gender equality as "feminazis" Outright Barbarous: How the Violent Language of the Right Poisons American Democracy), subscribing to a magazine like "Herizons" is a helpful political act.
