Artilleryman

ArtillerymanIf you are interested in American Civil War artillery, this is THE reference for you. Coggins book is great for most first level study, but this magazine and their authors is certainly the next level. I have been a subscriber of their earlier mag, The Muzzle Loading Artilleryman...back in the 70s. The Paulsen brothers have been 'figuring-out' ACW cannon that long and first hand. They helped me determine the rate of fire for a 10lb Parrot rifle...since the rounds were so tight that the round's sabot had to be chiseled for it to slide down the rifle barrel. The ammo wasn't fixed either so the rate of fire was slow compared to the Howitzers and Napoleons...hence artillerymen of the time liked the smooth bores better, even 6 lbers!

The quality of the print is excellent, the format is comfortable, and the article selection is also decidedly diverse enough to keep your interest.

If you need info on ACW arty, ask the authors! They are a valuable resource and quick to aid your particular interest.

If you are a re-enactor, this is an invaluable aide to improve your 1st person impression as they have a terrific amount of knowledge on sighting devices, loads, and lanyards.

You won't go wrong with this valuable resource! Get it today!

"Dedicated to the advancement of safety and skill in the exhibition and competition shooting of muzzle loading cannon and mortar"....

Have been subscribing for decades, and "Artilleryman" covers all aspects of historical and antique artillery; News, History, How to do, Classified Ads, Safety, Reenacting, Competition, and much more.

Simply the best.

Transworld Surf (1-year auto-renewal)

Transworld SurfGreat magazine. Can't get this for any cheaper so you might as well go through Amazon. Takes about 3 weeeks to get your first issue.

The articles and photos save me in the long cold winter months in the cold North.

What sets this mag apart from others is the format, paper quality and the quality of it's contributors.

This is a perfect gift for yourself, anyone who surfs, or anyone who is interested in looking at beautiful pictures and exploring far off places.

Ranger Rick (1-year auto-renewal)

Ranger RickI had Ranger Rick as a child and wanted to make sure it was the same great quality. I wanted to check out the current Ranger Rick magazine prior to purchasing it for my children so I went to (NWF National Wildlife Federation's website). Hint: NWF is the organization that puts out the magazine. There I found out that there are two additional aged based magazines (simular to Ranger Rick) which are more age appropriate for my 5 and 2 year old girls. You can also view a sample of the children magazines by clicking on the kids tab in the upper right corner of the home page (or try ). I highly suggest previewing the three different magazines to get the correct age group. I ended up purchasing "Wild Animal Baby" (recommended ages 2-4) and "Big Back Yard" (recommended ages 4-7) from the NWF website since they are not offered by Amazon. All three magazines are advertisement free and a portion goes towards the NWF. These 3 magazines seem to be way better content material and with no advertisings compared with the Nat Geo Kids as described by the other parent reviews!

We have been getting this magazine for a year or two and are no longer going to subscribe because it is just so full of info about all the awful things humans are doing to the world. Don't get me wrong, I think conservation is good, but the stories and articles have become too grim. In the last issue, the ricky raccoon comic was about how humans are destroying gorilla's habitat in Africa because a certain compound that is required for cellular phones has to be harvested from the ground where they live. In addition, there was another lengthy article about how red squirrels are needing to be rescued in their natural habitat because humans introduced another type of squirrel to the area, not that that's not a valid issue, but it really put a spin on the magazine that humans are just "bad". I think everyone would be much better served if this magazine, targeted to children, focused on how amazing animals are and taught children to appreciate and respect wildlife; and in so doing, inspired children to treat nature respectfully as adults.

I was so happy to find a magazine that would appeal to my 7 year old nephew since it's not easy to engage boys in reading these days. I am a big Amazon fan & never questioned that I wouldn't be getting a good price on this subscription. That is until I went to a local Barnes & Noble to buy a preview copy to wrap up for Christmas! To my dismay, the subscription card in the magazine offers the same 10 issue deal for $15.00 paid directly to the NWF! I can't help but feel a bit ripped off...in fact for the price I paid, I could have gotten 2 years for that same price had I gone directly to the source! Since my nephew has not yet seen the magaine, I can't give feedback on the magazine itself. But for what I paid, he better like it!!! Moral of the story: shop around!

I got Ranger Rick when I was a kid, and I get it for my Godchildren now. My only complaint is that unlike anything else on Amazon's website, this magazine is actually more expensive than from the publisher. It's $15 from the National Wildlife Federation. I won't do Amazon the disservice of sticking a link in here, but you can search for it yourself. Sorry, Amazon. I would have rather bought it from you because of your fantastic subscription management services. Get the price down to $15 and I'm back in a flash.

I grew up reading Ranger Rick, and now get subscriptions for it and the other two kids magazines published by the National Wildlife Federation (Big Backyard and Wild Animal Baby) for all of my nieces and nephews. They love the big pictures of animals, the goofy jokes, games, cartoons and activities. Just like I did, once they've read the magazine four times through, they love cutting up the photos for art projects, or trying to draw the animals in each issue. Ranger Rick is also a great gift!

Collectible Automobile (1-year auto-renewal)

Collectible AutomobileBeautifully produced, incredible detail, gorgeous photography.

Articles generally are about a series of similar cars; for example, 1964-66 Mustangs, which generally have the same body and chassis with superficial differencies over the model run. The typical article treats the subject as a business project over the course of several years, following from the design/engineering/tooling stage through the evolution and changes. The writers usally set the subject in context by describing the market conditions, competing products, and the product that the manufacturer superseded with the subject design.

If you are an enthusiast of a particular car, it is very likely that "Collectible Automobile" has previously covered it. The magazine hasn't rehashed exactly the same subjects, though an area may be revisited from a different perspective (eg, a recent article about GM's fleet of 1959 cars, though all of GM's 1959 cars have previously been covered in separate brand-specific articles that span several years).

Because there's no advertising (other than other products from the same publisher), there's no significant discount for subscriptions. I recommend buying a single copy from a newsstand, then ordering other interesting issues from the list at the back of the magazine.

My husband has been a car enthusiast and collector for most of his 60+ years. This magazine is always at the top of his "wish list" every birthday or Christmas (for me to renew!!) He's got every issue since they were first published and he'll drop everything the day it arrives in the mailbox and read it from cover to cover. It's a high-quality magazine with excellent photographs and detailed articles. We highly recommend this magazine for anyone who is a true classic car lover!

I live in England in the UK and I first bought Collectible Automobile 10 years ago. For anyone who appreciates classic American metal, this magazine is an absolute must.

The quality of the whole magazine is simply superb. From the fabulous photographs, to the high quality of the paper itself, and the comprehensive technical details of all the automobiles in the magazine.

It is by far the best quality automobile magazine that I have ever read.

There is not another magazine even close to this one. The quality of the paper and the color of the photographs is excellent. These folks come up with period pictures I've never seen. Well worth the money. I wish they could produce an issue each month.

Want Collectible Automobile (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

Collectible Automobile is the best magazine for people who collect cars and people (like me) who are dreaming and preparing to buy their first collectible car. Just as others have noted, the layouts are beautiful and the quality of the paper and even the print is excellent. This magazine is worth every penny you'll spend on it!

Each issue is devoted to the design and the mechanics of a few collectible cars in general. You might see a featured cover article about the history and design of a Mercury station wagon or a certain type of Buick, for example. The actual article gives you lots and lots of photos with annotations; and the articles are clearly written to give you insight with plenty of information in plain English so that you can learn so much just from reading that article. There are even tables that provide what the cost of a car should be (roughly) if you find it in various conditions and how much the featured cars originally sold for, etc.

If you subscribe you get a discount so I would advise subscribing to this magazine instead of buying it whenever a new issue is released. If you already wish you signed up earlier to get this magazine because it previously had an article about a certain type of car you like, don't worry. They provide you with an order form so that you can order a back issue. They also sell books about cars and there's lots of information about car shows happening all over the country.

Overall, Collectible Automobile is probably the best magazine out there for people who love old cars and collecting them. I highly recommend this magazine.

Sky & Telescope

Sky & TelescopeI've subscribed to this magazine for years even though my main interest is cosmology. Even professional astronomers subscribe so we highly recommend this magazine.

In my opinion, it's the most professionally done popular astronomy magazine, better than "Astronomy" and more focused than "Discovery." S&T has many gorgeous astro-photos, mostly done by pros with fab equipment as well as images from the Hubble. So why does the magazine devote more than half its pages and articles to amateur telescopes and accessories? Because that's what pays the bills! So I've packed up my telescope and left it in the garage, but I still subscribe because every issue has at least one article (feature or news) about science. The monthly star map, cepheid graph, and NEWS make the rapidly increasing subscription price still worth it.

Although I am a bigger fan of Astronomy magazine, I am a loyal subscriber to Sky & Telescope because I enjoy the detailed equipment and product reports, the book reviews, "Sky at a Glance," Event calendars, gallery, featured articles, and news notes. The companion website is awesome as well.

One intriguing section of the magazine always looks back to its past issues reminding readers how far the field of astronomy has come in the last century. This is actually a great context-providing feature that celebrates humanity's on going interest in the universe.

What I have observed--being a subscriber to both Astronomy and Sky & Telescope--is this: each magazine has its own unique personality, and each magazine potentially appeals to a kindred reader personality. Readers who like jazzy, topical, but engaging articles in an easy to thumb through, approachable format and language will enjoy Astronomy. [I am drawn to Astronomy's design and personality.] Readers who like an elegant, more formal format and who want to dig more deeply into astro-science concepts, into scientific data / analysis, or into product information may find Sky & Telescope more satisfying.

For me, subscribing to both magazines completes my astro diet--with all the necessary "food" (topic) groups included: Meal and dessert. It is interesting to see what each magazine emphasizes each month. Each magazine always offers something really cool and thought-provoking.

My best advice is try before you buy: go to a library or local news stand to view the current product of each magazine, and then decide which mag captures your interests, astro skill-level, and / or reader personality the most.

I am a retired English Professor and amateur astronomer, and I have subscribed to Sky and Telescope for over 20 years. It is the most professionally produced magazine I have ever read.

Its writing is mature and superbly edited, its photographs are beautifully rendered, its staff continually improves the magazine through better editing and production, and it provides articles on a broad range of subjects: the latest space probes and research; the dating of paintings or historical events by the night sky; Hubble and amateur photographs; meteor showers; what's up in tonight's sky; star maps; calendars of events world-wide; reviews of telescopes, accessories, computer software, and books; and more.

Sky and Telescope is widely read by professional astronomers and is probably bought by more amateurs world-wide than any other astronomy magazine.

If you have never looked through a telescope, if you use a telescope often, or if you have a telescope that you have packed up, this magazine should stimulate you to go out to see the night sky and discover where we live and what we live for.

S&T is a very specialized publication, dealing with astronomical observation and photography. If you are considering buying an astronomical telescope, or accessories for one, you'll want to consult this magazine. If you have any interest in photographing the night sky, you'll want to see the Gallery here, which has some truly breathtaking pictures. The magazine includes a star chart for the month, as you might expect. This is a great publication for regular, serious stargazers/photographers. More general-interest astronomy magazines are available.

A magnificent magazine full of breathtaking photos and quality articles. Offers great advice for the hobbyiest. Not only does it keep one abreast of space science I think EVERYONE will find it highly inspirational. The articles that take on more technical topics in astronomy and Cosmology sometimes leave one wanting but those wanting more accurate and detailed information on these topics are guided by the magazine to other sources. The magazine walks a tightrope and more often than not it is successful.

Acoustic Guitar

Acoustic GuitarIf you love to pull out that acoustic and knock off a few songs when the world seems to be going crazy and your soul needs the healing energy of music, then you should read this magazine. It provides good product reviews, playing tips, and song tabs. Also helpful are tips for tuning up and maintaining your guitar so it stays in the best playing condition. Although I am not a fan of magazine ads, the ads in this magazine are cool because they provide useful information about new products and services that would otherwise be difficult to discover. The interviews with top acoustic players like James Taylor, Neil Young & Bert Jansch are also a big plus. In all honesty, I do not read every issue--I grab issues when they have something I am interested in. In sum, if you are serious about playing that Martin or Gibson sitting in the corner, then read Acoutic Guitar every now and then--you will learn something!

Most guitar magazines are about mainly equipment and to a lesser extent, the thrash/metal/punk/whatever hero of the moment. "Acoustic Guitar" is different. It does talk about equipment, sure, but the primary focus has always been the music and the artists.

I have a couple years' worth of "Acoustic Guitar" on my bookshelves, unlike another popular magazine that gets read and tossed or given away. I don't save every issue, but I save a lot, as there's so much timeless information and good music to be found. In the few issues withing arm's reach I see a story on the music of "O Brother Where Are Thou?" with an arrangment of "Man of Constant Sorrow". Here's an article on Jazz Manouche and Django Reinhardt, with a tutorial written by John Jorgenson. Another issue spotlights the then-new MTV Unplugged phenomenon, and has a transcription of Clapton's unplugged "Layla".

Issues have covered contemporary singer-songwriters, Cuban "Son" music, African music, 1920s American Jazz guitarists... just about anything that can be played on a guitar. Evry issue is a surprise, and even if it doesn't have one of your favorites it'll have something you'll find interesting and useful.

This a good magazine for someone who wants to learn to play folk or fingerstyle music. I have tried all of the other magazines and this magazine as far as content and price are above the rest. That being said, this magazine is only a good suppliment for your guitar learning. Even if you don't desire to do anything but strum an acoustic guitar, I don't think this magazine can be your one source of literature. I would recommend that this magazine be purchased along with one of the mainstream magazines such as Guitar One or Guitar World.

It is wonderful to see a magazine that focuses on the acoustic guitar player. So many magazines seem to zero in primarily on the electric guitarist and rock/metal artists. This magazine has a bit of everything. Interviews with musicians of various genres, music with notation and tabs, and tips on different guitar techniques. It's a great way to get to know artists whom I've never heard of before and seek out their music to listen to.

I don't subscribe to this magazine (I'm a coffee shop magazine buyer), but I do buy it frequently. I'm a new guitarist who owns two acoustic guitars.

I've been subscribed to Acoustic Guitar Magazine since December 2003. I really enjoy every issue in its entirety. It has a variety of sections such as: Guitar and equipment reviews, artist interviews, Music CD's reviews, music to play, guitar lessons, vintage guitars and history, tips, events etc,. Advertising is always moderate. I am seriously thinking to start purchasing past issues. Good stuff !!Indeed a Great Guitar Magazine !!
