Afar

AfarPassionate about travel I find this newer magazine irritating. To me it says more about its target market (affluent) than it does about an enriching cultural expansive window on the experience of travel (international or national). The all too apparent leading edge from tips on high end places to stay, eat, etc. along with ads for those with a big budget, evokes the realm of the privledged traveler, no mater the "featured" destination.

A seasoned traveler, the AFAR subscription was given to me as a gift and I will not bother to renew it. I want to feel enriched after reading about a subject I love, not annoyed.

Shhh... the best kept secret among travel magazines. Wonderful articles. Beautiful photography. Warm stories about people and places ... and food! Written for an intelligent audience. Minimal ad content.

A really great travel magazine with beautiful photography and engrossing stories. I've enjoyed it from the first issue several years ago.

Sometimes you want to just sit on your couch and feel connected to interesting people who love traveling as much as you do. This is what AFAR magazine gives you! Most travel magazines have disappointed me because they are just a lot of ads and stock photos. But this magazine introduces you to people who travel often and you get a glimpse into their lives and where they've been. For example, the highlights for me in the latest issue: a short essay by an editor about how as a child his family of six kids did summer road trips all around the country and how it was his mom's curiosity that drove the trips despite his dad's reluctance, an article about a yacht racer and how alive he feels when seeing cities at night from the water and a list of his favorite ports, and an article by a cultural educator in Waimea Valley, Oahu explaining how he grew up in Hawaii going to Kamehameha School (elite school for native Hawaiians) and what Hawaii and the North Shore culture mean to him. You feel really inspired to go out and see the world after reading this magazine.

World Airnews

World AirnewsAirnews is a magazine that provides articles and news concerning developments and trends in the aviation industry in South Africa, although it claims to be a magazine for the whole African continent. For those stakeholders of the aviation industry in Southern Africa, this is a very interesting and enlightening magazine on developments in the industry. However, for those outside the region and particularly outside the African continent, the issues covered in the magazine may be of limited relevance and interest.

Having said the above, it is worth noting that South Africa accounts for a large proportion of all aviation activities in Africa, estimated to be up to 40 percent. Therefore, the developments in this African economic giant are of interest to many aviation professionals especially in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The coverage of the magazine is quite wide, including military and civil aircraft, training, airlines, corporate jets, commuter operations, helicopters, aircraft sales, aircraft maintenance, aircraft financing issues, regulatory developments and other news items.

News Photographer

News PhotographerNot always happy, not often happy, this takes you inside news photography. This is the journal of NPPA. Some of the stories are feel good, some are gut wrenching sad bloated Jonestown bodies. Great member services, slight PC...stuff. Weegee would have used this publication as a tool and evidence of brotherhood among those who do news photography. PDN is a similar publication for a slightly different emphasis. Suggest you join NPPA ( magazine comes with membership ) and subscribe to PDN. PDN and News Photographer are the real thing.

Cato Journal

Cato JournalAs a student in the field of public policy, I am so glad I found this magazine. It's excellent and very well done. Informative, highly technical, intellectual and on the point. I love it and will be a reader as of now. Highly recommended to the students of political science and public policy fields.

Jack & Jill

Jack & JillI got my nine-year-old niece a subscription to Jack and Jill last Christmas, and she loved getting it in the mail every other month. She really liked the fun short stories and even took an interest in cooking and gotten more involved with her mother in the kitchen thanks to the easy-to-make recipes. Of course I renewed the subscription this year as well. What an easy way to remain favorite Uncle all year round.

Jack and Jill came highly recommended to me by a friend. Although new to the magazine, we are very impressed by the clear and thoughtful content. This magazine should be on the must-buy gift list for all the young people in your life.

This is a great magazine! There are interesting articles, fun things to do, and opportunities for kids to enter their artwork for a chance to be published on the cover! They also publish short stories written by kids. I really like that they encourage the creative side of children as well as inform and challenge the intellectual side. The regular cast of kid characters (Jack, Jill, and the others) are a diverse group that children can identify with. I would recommend this magazine.

I remember receiving Jack & Jill when I was a child so was very excited to learn it was still around! I bought subscriptions for my pre-teen nieces and nephews and was worried how they would like it since it wasn't electronic. They LOVE the magazine! In fact they are both entering the art contest that the magazine puts on every year!

I got this for my niece. Since it takes so loooong for the subscription to start (that's the one drawback to getting subscriptions docking on star for that) I can't comment on her reaction yet. However, from what I've seen of the magazine, I like that it features a mix nonfiction articles, short stories, poems, games, comics, recipes and crafts as well as kid-created content.

Cooking Pleasures

Cooking PleasuresCooking Pleasures magazine is the magazine produced by the Cooking Club of America. I very happily joined Cooking Club of America, and began receiving this magazine quite a while ago. The Club offers so much to its subscribers, but as time wore on, I could see that the Marketing Department was a tad too aggressive for my taste.

The Cooking Club of America offers their potential members numerous items to entice them to join. Members can take part in member-only contests where kitchen products and gift baskets are some of the prizes. They can be sent food items or kitchen products to review. They can also receive a cheese grater for joining!

There are some nice photographs in this publication. The recipes are not complicated either, although they do require some unusual ingredients and some that are very expensive that many people would find hard to locate. I, personally, had to forego some recipes, and others; I had to order a couple of ingredients online, because of the reasons given.

The cheese grater sent to you is a nice idea, but being it is a rotary grater, you have to squeeze very hard to get the cheese to grate. Also, the grater is made of plastic and eventually snaps in half after using it only a handful of times.

The Club also offers you a Culinary Resource Directory. The information contained in this directory is not difficult to find in a basic Internet search. You can also receive standard sized blank recipe cards. Unfortunately, due to the size of recipe cards, I do not believe anyone can even write the ingredients onto them without running out of space.

Also, part of the member benefits is to sample products for review. Potential members can see photographs of blenders, ice cream makers and much more. While a member there for three years, I did have the opportunity to review quick rise yeast and a chipotle spice. Both were nice products. They were not the glamorous photos of kitchen appliances, but it was something!

Currently, they are offering a VISA credit card with their logo. With this card, not only can you use the card like any other credit card, but also you can receive club discounts. If this is something that appeals to you, see the Club for details.

Approximately 3 months after you renew your own subscription, they start mailing you about how you should renew your membership for the following year now, so that you can help them keep club costs down. After just paying for the current year, I was not interested in paying for another year already. An idea may be to NOT contact members so soon after they just paid their subscriptions. That may save the club some money.

I have Caller ID, and I utilize it all the time, screening my calls to specifically avoid telemarketing calls. Imagine my surprise when I pick up a call and it was a representative for Cooking Club of America. I was, actually, pleasantly surprised, thinking I was about to embark on another benefit of being a member. I was most disappointed to hear the mono-toned voice on the other end of the line, reading the script, suggesting I become a Lifetime Member now. When I tell them I am not interested, they have a "new" deal for me. When I still tell them I am not interested, they have yet another deal. The calls continued after this conversation for another couple of months.

At this point, my subscription has expired. I was relieved as the telemarketing phone call really turned me off. You should have been there to see me receive my credit card statement. Cooking Club of America automatically charged my credit card with my next subscription without my permission. It was three months after my original subscription expired! As you can imagine, this was extremely upsetting.

Upon doing my research for this article, I have come to find that others have had similar experiences with this magazine. It's a shame too, as this magazine has plenty of potential. Unfortunately, their marketing department could utilize different tactics in maintaining their current membership.

Despite this magazine being very affordable, I recommend that you save your money on this one and try Fine Cooking, Cuisine at Home or Cook's Illustrated. Not only do these magazines provide better recipes, more professional tips, they also do not call you daily to get your money.

I let this one go it reminded me to much of Cuisine Magazine and I already had that one so there was no need for the two. The recipes are real simple and not very complicated at all that was a PLUS and a break from all those other Magazines I subscribed to.

It's format is very good for the person that doesn't want to get bogged down in the ads or the product information in the back of the Magazine. The Magazine is thin so it doesn't take up much space and features step-by-step pictures.

Happy Reading

I have had the subscription for 2.5 years now and I enjoy getting it bimonthly. The recipes often do call for hard to find ingrediants (since I don't live in a real big city) and most of them take alot of prep time and cooking but that's why the magazine is COOKING PLEASURES. It's not Quick 'N Easy.

I gave the magazine 4 stars instead of 5 because I find that most of the recipes are "pleasurable" in comfort and not calories or fat. I love the desserts and main dishes they usually have, its just that most of the dishes are not good for the waist line. But, I guess that's why its PLEASURES and not LIGHT.

Yes, this magazine does provide some different recipes from other magazines. Yes, you gain access to an "exclusive club" when you subscribe.

Yes, you'll get harassed constantly by The Club (I get mail from them on a nearly weekly basis, always claiming to be my "last chance!", but apparently they'll also harass you by phone).

Yes, you'll get to test some cool products, but they're not usually all that great.

I've been a member for a few years now, and I'm letting my subscription run out this time. It's just not worth it and I'm tired of all the junk mail from them. I'm glad I wrote them checks instead of giving them my credit card info so there should be no surprise billing.

The magazine itself is nice, has some pictures and the recipes can be good. Sadly the cooking club is such a nightmare. They harass you and send you things you don't want, that you have to pay to return like books. They want you to sign up as a life-time member, and will ask you to do so all of the time. The things in those letters, such as a magnet and a sponge, you have to send back if you don't want to become a life-time member.

Light of Consciousness : Journal of Spiritual Awakening

Light of Consciousness : Journal of Spiritual AwakeningI discovered this journal in a news stand at an organic market and found it fascinating throughout. I liked the discussions about Vedic as well as Buddhist and other philosophies. The articles show the ways in which the ancient wisdom traditions on enlightenment/awakening are closely related. There is just no argument about this, only different words used to describe the same experience. A refreshing read.

For some time I had been looking for an interfaith spiritual magazine at the level of seekers with some experience. This one is based in Hinduism but contains articles on other traditions and evidences religious tolerance. At a certain level of practice and experience the boundaries which divide us are just plain wrong thinking. This magazine would be a good basic education for beginners but also seems challenging enough for a well-worn traveller on the road. It is literate and sophisticated, and the graphics are beautiful and inspiring.

This magazine has become my favorite tool for my spiritual awakening. The articles are articulate, heart-felt, and easy to understand. Since they only have four issues a year, you have time to reflect upon each article and get the most from the writer. It also gives me time to read over several times and keep finding new things. I have found so much joy in this subscription and now family members are reading, too. This makes for positive conversation at family dinners. There is no political agenda and the magazine speaks of science as well as spirituality, which I think is important. I will be subscribing as long as they keep writing. Namaste.

Country Woman

Country WomanCountry Woman is a good magazine for craft tips and recipes as each edition usually has a bit of both. There is usually a feature concerning country living and an editor spends a day at a country business to learn about how the business does their thing.

That being written it's been awhile since I've read this magazine and you can not find it here at local stores. The reason why I did not renew my subscription as the magazine seemed to lose its homey feel after the Reiman Magazines were sold to another publisher. Since then the magazine feels cheaper, especially after they moved to "recyclable" paper. I have nothing against using Earth friendly products but the choice of paper just feels cheap.

I am no longer a subscriber as Country Woman just doesn't appeal.

Don't throw your money away. Mostly advertising about stuff the average person doesn't need. Even most of the articles were not practical.

I think what I like most about Country Woman Magazine are the vibrant, colorful photographs. I love the stories about the 'cover woman' telling about their life and successes. The craft ideas have gotten so much better recently! Their craft section had some outdated projects, but recently, in the last couple of years, I've seen fresh ideas that are more in tune with today. Glad to see the magazine moving forward instead of staying stuck in the past. :)
