they could include more clothing patterns that are easy to follow. Most of the projects are for children's toys and doily's. For a prolific crocheter I suppose it's best to develop your own patterns because you will quickly get bored with the scant clothing items included in the magazine.

This magazine prompted me to crochet years ago. I saw a pattern for a crochet bikini that I had to duplicate. I did it but I took it apart & never made another one. So I suppose I owe my crocheting career to this magazine. It's a shame they don't include more innovative clothing designs with different types of yarns.

This little magazine is full of a variety of beautiful, charming and useful patterns from seasonal decorations, doilies and afghans to very pretty clothing and accessories. The patterns don't employ lots of special stitches so it's easy going for just about anyone. Having checked out nearly every crochet magazine currently offered, I'd say this is well worth the subscription price for all but those who want only specialty and/or really challenging projects.

I somehow got on their mailing list and got sent several past due notices without ever getting a magazine. Did see the magazine and it's not something I would have ever subscribed to very poor quality and nothing in it that the other better crochet magazines don't already have. The price is also outlandish for the black and white newspaper quality.

Very Good deer hunting magazine. As a deer hunter, I have found alot of excellent articles that have helped me to understand the " art & whys" of deer hunting. Always something new to learn in each month's copy. Art graphics depicting article hightlights are top-notch. I've just finished my first year with this magazine and will definately renew my subscription. I would rate this magazine to be as good or better than issues of "Deer & Deer Hunting".

I bought the subscription for my nephew as a xmas present who loves it!!! He then shares w/his father, my brother-in-law. They're both avid hunters. So this year I subscribed for my brother-in-law as a 50th birthday gift. Money well spent!!!

'The Progressive Populist' delivers 22 issues a year packed with insightful articles from people like Amy Goodman, Jim Hightower, Garrison Keillor, Patrisia Gonzales and Ralph Nader. It provides plenty of space for 'letters to the editor.'

With subscriptions for less than $30, it is a bargain and a good tool for sharing progressive thought with others.

The only thing wrong with THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST is it publishes 22 times a year instead of weekly. A digest of people's pundits and news unfiltered by the conglomerates that control the majority of American news, THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST belongs in the information mix of anyone who realizes they can't trust corporate media, where reporting truth is a conflict of interest. As I write this in May, 2011, the latest edition of THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST includes an article by Alexander Cockburn challenges the hype about the so-called revolution in Libya. Another piece debunks the myth that the United States Postal Service loses money. While a weekly dose of Cockburn, Ralph Nader, Jesse Jackson, Ted Rall, Amy Goodman, Dean Baker and other columnists THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST carries would be great, reading them 22 times a year beats not at all.

Sure, you may have PROGRESSIVE POPULIST contributors such as Dean Baker showing up in your TRUTHOUT e-mail digest, or maybe you're on Ralph Nader's e-mail list. But in every PROGRESSIVE POPULIST issue I, for one, read several informative pieces I see nowhere else.

THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST's "Dispatches" section reports news you should have but won't necessarily get from your daily, conglomerate-owned newspaper. I read "Dispatches" first.

This is the best Italian cooking magazine I have ever seen -no wonder, as it is actually published in Italy, in Italian. American magazines of Italian cooking seem to be about what we suppose Italian food is about. This magazine is what trendy Italian women would actually pick up and buy, and cook from. There are cooking lessons as well as recipes and reviews. It is worth the effort to translate the issues (if you are not fluent in Italian, as I am not) and the photos are beautiful.

This magazine is the real deal, in Italian, for Italians. I love La Cucina Italiana but this is even better. Knowing a bit of Italian would help in using this, but there is always Google Translator (as long as you are willing to type a lot of Italian). The first thing I learned was what a deciliter is. It is also packed with recipes and pictures....awesome.

Church & State

Church & State is the monthly publication from Americans United for Separation of Church and State. That organization's name tells you where the editorial focus of the magazine is coming from and what they'll cover. Typical articles concern lawsuits over church/state separation issues, or items that are soon to turn into lawsuits, namely legislative and administrative rules that favor one religion. The recent Roy Moore episode, where the former Chief Justice of Alabama brought a large monument to the Ten Commandments into the Courthouse, was featured in several issues. "Faith-based" charities and their support via public funds gets lots of coverage, as do the school vouchers issue.

Some of the articles are better than others. I'd say the features' biggest weakness isn't in lack of background or quality of writing but in how strongly partisan the pieces can be. (I support AU's goals, but sometimes their unbalanced cheerleading gets uncomfortable!) Short news items from around the United States and other parts of the world begin and end each issue. There are usually 2-3 feature pieces, 2 opinion pieces, and a letters column. AU's director, the Rev. Barry Lynn, closes each issue with an editorial. These too are well-written but sometimes uncomfortably self-serving.

This isn't a slick journal. Published on 11 x 17 inch paper in 2 colors at a time (where one is always black), this publication is more of a newsletter. And like most nonprofits, AU has few paid staff, so you'll see the same names each month on the article credits.

If you are interested in a lively write-up church/state issues, this is a good magazine to get. If you support AU's goals of keeping that wall between church and state, send them a tax-deductable donation and you'll get the magazine anyway.

If you want to learn about how and where the tentacles of the religious fanatics are working to subvert the church-state wall, you owe it to yourself to check this out. It can be depressing reading, but it's needed to begin to understand how serious the situation is. I recommend this and their excellent site:
