Hockey News

Hockey Newsi saw that this was unrated & didn't want any fans to miss out. i've been getting the hockey news for several years now. Being in california it can be hard to get info on the goings ons in the hockey world. things have gotten easier with the nhl network, but it's still by no means mainstream. the hockey news is awsome! it comes out of canada but they say new york, covers mostly the nhl but also cover most minor, &pro hockey leagues (ahl, echl, omjhl etc.) i can't say enough about this mag but can't think of anything to say. as a hockey fan to other hockey fans, "if you love hockey & want more info on the hockey world or more info on both player in the nhl & on there way there than this is what you're looking for." there aren't many hockey mags out there so don't waste your time or money on anything but the best & in this case that's the hockey news.

I ordered this subscription for my son who is a hockey lover, and he reads it cover to cover. He is very satisfied with the magazine.

International Journal on World Peace

International Journal on World PeaceThis journal has articles on a variety of topics that are related to world peace. It speaks to an international audience and has been in continuous publication for 25 years. One thing that I love about this journal is that it publishes different viewpoints from people around the world. It provides a forum for young scholars to promote new research, and it promotes dialogue. You won't find vitriolic essays from the usual pundits here; the essays are reasoned, civil, and constructive. I highly recommend the International Journal on World Peace to those who are ready for an international and interdisciplinary perspective on shaping a more peaceful world.

Jaguar World Monthly

Jaguar World MonthlyThis is a great periodical published in the UK about all things Jaguar. The magazine covers the latest Jaguar offerings (e.g. F-Type as of May 2014) but also devotes a good portion of its effort towards educating the reader on Jaguar's rich heritage (e.g. the XK120 days). Some of the reviews cover models that are not available in the US, such as the XF 2.2D and XF Sportbrake, but we Americans can keep dreaming that one day, those models might make it across the pond.

Very easy ordering process and no need to invoke exchange rate fees on my CC. The only down side is that you can't participate in the prize draws in the magazine, when living in the US.

It turns out that the slightest difference between the way I wrote my address when renewing and the way it was registered with the magazine subscription department caused my renewal to be registered as a new subscription. I contacted the magazine and they rectified it by crediting my account by one copy. Great response and service

Precious Times

Precious TimesIt's a great magazine to share with teenagers and young women. It's so inspiring and informative for young women. I have a daughter 21 and I didn't give the magazine to her to read, I just read it and left it on the table, hoping she will pick it up on her own and read it. She has and now I see her packing it up with her magazines.

Budapest Business Journal

Budapest Business JournalEdited much like Chicago's "Crain's Chicago Business," the "Budapest Business Journal" localizes its content to serve the needs of those doing business in Hungary's largest city. Its tone is not light, though it is very readable. An MBA is not required.

Not as in-depth as publications like the "Wall Street Journal," it does, however, highlight news necessary to serious Eastern European investors. Major articles on the current tax situation, work force issues, hedge funds and market trends all indicate that BBJ is working hard. The pieces indicate research and investigation, with a committed effort to examine all sides of the questions.

BBJ follows the personalities, movers and shakers, and trends that impact Hungary, with increasing news about the European Union. Commentaries and editorials are pro-Hungary, recognizing the great difficulty the region has, but the potential Hungary has as a leading financial center. As optimistic as the editorial staff is about the continued economic redemption of Hungary, articles lean honestly about the struggles and hurdles ahead.

Features include reviews of restaurants and entertainment, and presumes many readers are not regular visitors to Budapest.

Advertising is geared toward expats with higher incomes, with nicer restaurants, corporate services, and luxury travel filling the ad space.

While a meatier newspaper would be helpful, this is a good start. As the economy expands, so should this newspaper.

Cycle World (1-year auto-renewal)

Cycle WorldHachette Filipacchi Media has horrible customer service. Several months ago, they mailed me a renewal offer for $10 for 24 issues (2-years) which I submitted with a personal check. They cashed in my check and I checked my account online only to discovered they only renewed it for 12 more issues. I emailed them and was told that they have lots of offers and only one for $10/12-issues. I sent them my offer code and even scanned a copy of the letter I received, but they would not honor their own offer and claimed that they had a 24-issue offer for $12.00. Notwithstanding, it took on average 3-4 days before I would get a reply. I did not even bother calling them because it was long-distance and I was sure I'd be placed on hold longer than I'd like. After weeks of communication, they finally agreed to honor their $10/24 issue offer.

For this much hassle, I have to drop the rating down to 2/5 stars but only because of the publishing company. I hate to do this because I feel the magazine is very good.

The magazine content itself is quite educational and well-written. I do not own a motorcycle but I enjoy reading about them, as well as racing tips and other tool tips that I could apply to auto racing/cars. Many of the car magazines are more interested in selling aftermarket parts or reviewing expensive foreign cars that no one could afford even after 3 lifetimes. I discovered Cycle World to focus more on the relationship between driver and machine, even if the machine has only 2 wheels! I read many negative reviews about how Cycle World was only focusing on Japanese "crotch rockets" but I must disagree. I have found it to contain balanced content covering everything from touring bikes, scooters, beginner motorcycles, and up to the Super Sport bikes. If you're into motorcycles, Cycle World is your magazine.

I give the magazine itself 4/5 stars, but the publisher (whom provides the subscription) was a severe disappointment.

I've been reading Cycle World since 1977 and it's by far the best all-round motorcycle mag you can get. It covers every aspect of motorcycling, including sport bikes, dirt bikes, standards, cruisers, racing articles, top-notch technical articles by experts like Kevin Cameron, wonderful features and articles by Peter Egan (America's most beloved moto-journalist), op-ed pages, etc. It covers British, Italian, American, Japanese and German bikes alike, with detailed performance and technical data. Even the advertising is good. It's a fun read, from front to back. Cycle World is a high quality magazine, just like its sister publication for car lovers, Road & Track.

I've been a suscriber of this magazine for about 15 years and find it the most well rounded writings of the motorcycle offerings in the US.

If you are looking for a broad interest in motorcycle coverage this is it. For the price to content ratio this magazine remains a constant in my readings. I currently read about 4 brands a month and Cycle World is the first one I pick up.

Good Reading!!

Motorcycle enthusiasts are a unique breed and the main quality that sets them apart from the rest of civilization is their unyielding enthusiasm for their chosen sport/hobby. They often become consumed with biking and, like golf fanatics and others, they view every spare moment as an excuse to partake in their chosen activity.

Cycle World is a magazine designed with the motorcycle enthusiast in mind. This publication is made for the type of biker who not only likes to ride his cycle, but also liked to learn as much about motorcycles as possible. There are, of course, plenty of articles in each issue of Cycle World that talk about the joys of riding and the sport of motorcycle racing. But Cycle World includes other articles, tooarticles that only the wellrounded motorcycle fan will be likely to read and appreciate. Some articles focus on new technology. Others dispense advice on motorcycle repair. There are also travel articles and personality profiles as well, making for a nicely rounded publication.

I'm not a motorcycle enthusiast or even a casual fan, but I still like certain sections of Cycle World and I try to read a few of them every month. My favorite sections of Cycle World are those that feature new products. Cycle World is among the first publications to report on new motorcycles and other related products and the magazine includes plenty of great photos, test data, and various statistics. In a matter of minutes, one can quickly learn the pros and cons of a specific motorcycle and more easily make a buying decision. Even though I am not a fan, I still like these articles because, like articles on new cars, they often include some very cool new product offerings that can easily impress anyoneeven a nonfan like me.

Motorcycles are loved by their many enthusiastic fans and Cycle World is a magazine intended for those who want a wellrounded publication about motorcycles, their upkeep, and their use for entertainment. Most of the pages in each issue are dedicated to the different motorcycles produced by different manufacturers, but there is plenty other information to be found in this magazine about motorcycles and Cycle World makes a good choice for those who want to know how to ride, repair, and enjoy their hobby as much as possible.

Humor Times

Humor TimesThe Humor Times is a great publication! I must disclose my bias here upfront: the publisher is a personal friend of mine, and I played keyboards in his band in the late 90's (dude!). He's a wonderful spirit, a fine musician and band leader, and his name is James Israel.

His paper and online resources contain thought provoking and insightful cartoons that skewer modern life and the figures who seem to exemplify the best and worst of our species.

If you don't like political cartoons of a left-of-center bent then this publication is definitely not for you! Don't subscribe unless you want to enter a purgatory of conflicting desires wherein you might have to laugh at yourself once in a while.

BUY THIS PAPER! It supports the people who think like you do and have the luck to be able to express themselves artistically in their attempts to make this a better planet to live on.

Patrick McGilvray

Publisher

I just enjoyed reading the latest issue of the Humor Times. Every month the HT pulls together the best political cartoons of the month. This issue's cartoons even made me laugh about the tragedy unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico. The HT is a breath of fresh air, a blast of comic relief. It's the Daily Show in print. Like its motto says...don't cry about the news, laugh about it with the Humor Times!

Discover (2-year)

DiscoverAs a scientist/educator, I enjoy reading about current science being done in all fields, whether neuroscience or astronomy. We get so specialized in our fields sometimes, we forget about the other sciences which we are not personally involved in. This is one of the better science journals for laypeople who have limited background in most sciences. It's great for me, and I have a large background in most sciences. But so much happens in all areas of scientific endeavor that it is impossible to keep up with. So a magazine like Discover helps to close the gap on my personal ignorance in other areas of science besides neuroscience.

Discover is by the same people running Discovery Channel. Their information is good, they do the research, and they often broach difficult and contrary science concepts which may not be mainstream yet. Their writers and editors do an excellent job. My own personal favorite article each month is Vital Signs, from doctors about medical cases that may be strange or that need to be brought to the attention of the public. I always read that first.

This is a good magazine for high school students to have access to in addition to the regular science textbooks. The type of information given often makes science more accessible for high school students. They can see why someone would choose to go into particular fields of science, and why research is needed.

I do not always agree with the information given. Too many times, it seems that Discover and its editors promote ideas or new medical concepts/technology which has not been proven. As always, lay readers should be sure to get a variety of inputs and information, as well as second opinions before accepting what is said by Discover or any other source. An example of this is the retinal implant spoken about in 2001. Readers should not go asking their physicians about such technology for themselves, but should do as much research as possible prior to making a decision on experimental procedures.

Karen SAdler,

Science Education,

University of Pittsburgh

Yes, the strongest appeal that this magazine has is its readability. The articles, however diverse they are, are not that hard to understand at all. I believe that even younger readers could read them without feeling offended and snobbed by the writing style. This is because Discover is intended for the general public. People who like a beefier telling of scientific issues should read Scientific American instead. But please note: I am not saying that Discover is kid-stuff. It is not.

Points of interest:

1.) In every issue, there is this Neuroquest, a very interesting one page "exploration of the inner workings of the human brain."

2.) The mag also offers Bogglers, a set of brain-teasers/puzzles to give those gray cells something to work on.

3.) And, Science Surfing, do I have to tell you what this is??

So far, all the Discover issues that I have have 92 pages, of which 17-18 pages were devoted to ads.

Buy Discover (2-year) Now

For years Discover was the best magazine for the lay person or even scientists who wanted to keep track of the trends in other fields of science. Now with a new publisher it has become almost worthless. Very superficial articles are mixed with over blown headlines and poor science. After buying Discover since it's very inception I find it sad what has happened to this magazine. Check the dates and notice the glowing reviews for the old magazine but pay attention to the negative ones from the last 6 months.

Edit:

I encourage people to give this magazine a second chance, four years later. I haven't checked up on it in that time, but some indicate that the quality has gone up significantly since Discover embarked on its new look. -06/28/10

(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)Discover is a fun magazine, and a much easier read than Scientific American. Mind you, it does not have the density of it's fellow publication, but I seem to pick Discover up more often lying around the house.

A nice broad range of categories are covered by Discover, with an eye for "topical science." The editors are good at identifying scientific trends (like cloning), and are quick to get articles out. This is a great benefit for those who want to stay knowledgeable about science, but do not have the time to invest in deep research.

As with any science magazine, fantastic pictures fill the pages. Charts and images are well-used to illustrate and clarify unfamiliar topics. A well put-together magazine.

Master Detective

Master DetectiveMy mother has been collecting various true crime magazines since the 1970s. Master Detective is one title that she has been consistently collecting, mainly because of it's high-quality writing. I have inherited my mother's interest and though I'm not a collector like her, I do try to read these magazines whenever I can gain access to them.

"Master Detective", in the vein of other true crime magazines focuses on real-life crimes both historical [dating back to the past] as well as contemporary stories. The stories are written with insight and clarity and make for easy reading. These stories are further enhanced with the accompaniment of archival photographs to do with the crime scene, the victim/c, the accused, trial etc.

Fans of true crime stories will appreciate these stories, though I have to caution these stories are rather morbid and not for the faint-hearted. It's rather difficult to obtain these magazines locally here in the US, unless one subscribes, and the price isn't exactly cheap. But, it does make for engrossing reading.

Just Crossstitch

Just CrossstitchThis magazine is stuck in the 1980's the style of most of the projects looks like stuff my grandmother would like (pictures of fruit and flowers). They rarely (although it DOES happen occasionaly ie: Blackbird Designs was in there last year, with a great project) include the newer artists or styles. The exception is the yearly JCS Ornaments special edition that is a must have, but I don't know if it is part of the yearly subscription. Most of the projects are still on aida, and most of them, again, are very outdated in style. I'd like to see more historical projects, more samplers, and more updated projects on linen before I will buy this magazine again.

I subscribe to almost every cross stitch mag available this one is one of the better ones, It has a variety of subject matter and black and white charts. Also has some nice comments. However, there is no what people have stitched section (Like the UK mags have) and very few articles for actual reading

My magazine arrived much quicker than expected (still waiting on another one that I ordered the same day) The projects are beautiful!! The cover of a bird and flowers is great, but inside is a pillow with daffodils on blue aida and it is stunning!! i have the DMC floss ready and I am waiting on 1-2-3 stitch ( a fantastic company!) to mail me my aida! The magazine has a variety of stylesso I am not sure what the other reviewer is looking atbut i really enjoyed my first issue and can't wait for the next!! I will be re-subscribing for sure!!

Want Just Crossstitch Discount?

I had not picked up this magazine in several years, and am so pleased with the current issue that I will be subscribing to it again. The magazine is targeted to moderately experienced stitchers, and uses a variety of stitches, threads, fabrics and techniques to bring life to what can be a bit of a rigidly obsessional hobby. They do not specialize in easy country patterns as seems to be popular in many of the other magazines, and rather than focus on a trendy new thread, they bring creativity and life to the threads you probably already have. I will be using pieces of one of their samplers to decorate altar linens. I wish their charts were in more than one color and wish it were available for the Kindle, but wouldn't change anything otherwise.

Progressive Populist

Progressive Populist'The Progressive Populist' delivers 22 issues a year packed with insightful articles from people like Amy Goodman, Jim Hightower, Garrison Keillor, Patrisia Gonzales and Ralph Nader. It provides plenty of space for 'letters to the editor.'

With subscriptions for less than $30, it is a bargain and a good tool for sharing progressive thought with others.

The only thing wrong with THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST is it publishes 22 times a year instead of weekly. A digest of people's pundits and news unfiltered by the conglomerates that control the majority of American news, THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST belongs in the information mix of anyone who realizes they can't trust corporate media, where reporting truth is a conflict of interest. As I write this in May, 2011, the latest edition of THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST includes an article by Alexander Cockburn challenges the hype about the so-called revolution in Libya. Another piece debunks the myth that the United States Postal Service loses money. While a weekly dose of Cockburn, Ralph Nader, Jesse Jackson, Ted Rall, Amy Goodman, Dean Baker and other columnists THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST carries would be great, reading them 22 times a year beats not at all.

Sure, you may have PROGRESSIVE POPULIST contributors such as Dean Baker showing up in your TRUTHOUT e-mail digest, or maybe you're on Ralph Nader's e-mail list. But in every PROGRESSIVE POPULIST issue I, for one, read several informative pieces I see nowhere else.

THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST's "Dispatches" section reports news you should have but won't necessarily get from your daily, conglomerate-owned newspaper. I read "Dispatches" first.

Subscribe to THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST.

Blue Ridge Country

Blue Ridge CountryBLUE RIDGE COUNTRY covers the mountain regions of Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Maryland, South Carolina and Kentucky. The best features of the magazine are the pictures and the calendar of events listed chronologically for each state. The rest of the publication contains some interesting articles and of course a lot of advertisements.

Having received this magazine subscription previously and lettingit lapse, I was looking back at an issue several years old and realized how much I liked this magazine. I purchased it from Amazon for a good deal.

Blue Ridge Country is where I live and I like reading about our local weather, places to visit, and new recipes. I also enjoy using it to show my guests places of interest when they visit.

Blue & Gold Illustrated

Blue & Gold IllustratedThis company delivers the issues chronically late when they arrive at all. No issues have been received for three weeks despite renewal having been paid months ago. Completely usesless for keeping up to date with current football season. Not worth the price. A complete rip off. This was a gift subscription for a 90 year old ND alum, and he is very disappointed in the low quality service.

When I purchased the Blue & Gold magazine for my husband it stated that the magazines may not start arriving for 8-12 weeks. That really concerned me as he is an avid ND football fan and wanted to get the early news before the games started. I went ahead and purchased the subscription on July 23 with much hesitation. The first issue arrived about three weeks later and my husband is very satisfied with this purchase. Next year I will order earlier just to make sure he gets the magazine in August.

BBC History

BBC HistoryI too recently subscribed to BBC History Magazine through Amazon and had no problems. It's a colorful magazine full of interesting and lively articles and stimulating ideas. Indirectly, I also see BBC History Magazine as a kind of travel magazine. There are lots of historical places I want to check out after reading a few issues. Highly recommended!

I really enjoy this magazine, so much so that I asked for it as a gift for Christmas. But, as of ten months later I have not recieved any of the magazines. If you want a subscription for BBC History my suggestion is to contact the magazine directly, especially if you live in the U.S. I have contacted the magazine department at Amazon and have not received any real response.
