Pipes and Tobaccos

Pipes and TobaccosFor anyone with an interest in "the gentle art" of pipesmoking, it's customs, history, techniques or technology, "P & T" as it is known to its readers, is the finest magazine available on the subject. Each issue of this glossy quarterly is jam-packed with information on pipes and tobaccoiana, most of which is unavailable elsewhere.

Universally well-written articles mix with an editorial atmosphere redolent of the comforting sensibilities of old friends visiting together to make each issue a minor gem. The reviews of the hundreds of available pipe blends are particularly helpful for the pipe enthusiast (by the bye, the Latin term is Kapisiology---a tip of the hat here to P & T).

Great Magazine for the pipe smoking crowd, has stories about famous pipe brands and the people who make them. The magazine contains a monthly review of new and well established pipe tobacco blends. Is a MUST for the pipe collector.

Of the few choices in pipes/tobacco magazines, this is the best. Well written, lots of good information for beginners, advanced smokers, and hobbyist alike. A great magazine.

I've been picking up this magazine from the online retailers for years. Great articles and fun to read. The pictures of the pipes are fantastic. Wish I had the $$$ to buy the expensive freehands, but I'll have to settle for the big brands quality pipes. I'm not saying I'm disapointed in my collection. I've got some very pretty Peterson's and Savinelli's I truely enjoy smoking. But you can always dream of the ones you wish you could afford. After years of just picking the magazine up when I order tobacco, I decided to subscribe to the magazine. Looking forward to receiving my first issue.

Men's Fitness (1-year auto-renewal)

Men's FitnessI've been a longtime subscriber to Men's Fitness. As one of the other reviewers said, this magazine used to be better. It still has a great deal of workout, diet and fitness information, but it's not as good as it once was. I think the magazine is losing its focus a bit as each issue does seem to have more and more about sex, pornography, etc.

The only reason I give it 4 stars is because a lot of the workout and fitness information is still very useful (otherwise I would give it fewer), but I used to feel this magazine was worthy of 5 stars.

I know that overall men's fitness should include sex (and lots of it) but I tire of hearing it from a magazine whose main focus should be fitness, wellness, and health. I'm not purposing to eliminate it completely, because as we all know sex sells, I just saying minimize it! I can read all about sex in Playboy! I would suggest buying Men's Healthit's a better read.

I've been a subscriber to Men's Fitness since late 1999. In fact, I still go back and use their year-long workout routines from 2000, 2001 and 2002 when I feel like I've hit a rut, or am coming back after a layoff.

Unfortunately, the publication has changed over that time, and sadly, not for the best. Where I was once able to read the magazine from cover to cover and get lots of information that I felt made the issues valuable to keep, since I could go back and always find something to tweak my workouts with, these days, I just don't see the same quality. Not only in the workouts provided, but in the other articles and the magazine itself.

For example, over the last 4 years or so, when they started to put celebrities on the cover, LL Cool J is one of the VERY few that they have managed to discuss any type of a workout with that really goes further than the standard, "Oh, I do weights 3 days per week and cardio 4 days, blah blah blah" repetitive answer. Instead, the writers focus on their movie, their CD, or how they feel about the sport they play. If they put Ryan Reynolds on the cover, then I want to know what his workouts are like; sets, reps, what he does on different days of the week and so on. Not how he feels about whatever role he's playing in his new movie, not who he's dating/married to, not the kind of clothes he wears or what he drives, which is typical of the type of interviews and articles that appear issue after issue in the magazine today.

In a nutshell, Men's Fitness appears to be drifting away from the informative magazine that I feel that it used to be so much so, that for several years, I held it in higher regard than Men's Health to something resembling Maxim. In other words, a magazine that I will flip through once, and forget that I have it an hour after I've read it. And that is really too bad, considering that it used to be such a high quality magazine at one point in time.

This magazine has great covers and gets your attention right away. I was was drawn to the cover because it claims to have great article inside, but the articles are very short and pointless. It was a good magazine few years back but now it just seems like they don't know what their doing.

I ordered this and it seemed to take a while to get the first magazine... Then when it showed up I got two the same day. I was pleasantly surprised to see that MF had changed their format and I had a chance to read the first and second issues. They are full of information and have a good division between the sound bite articles and articles that go into a good depth on a person or health issue.

Overall a good read if you take the time to read it.

Inspirations - Australia

Inspirations - AustraliaInspirations is the perfect name for this publication. Every feature inside is a little gem of needleart craftsmanship that would stand out against any professional work. How they manage to keep on creating those deligthtful designs every issue without starting to look like every other pedestrian embroidery magazine I have no idea, but the editors deserve a little prayer of thanks for their high standards.

Inspirations magazine is a pleasure to look at and read. Top needlework, smocking and sewing designers from Australia and around the world publish their projects here. Lovely photography complements layouts that are clean, elegant and decidedly feminine. Advertisements are restricted to the very back, leaving the main section content uninterrupted. Even the cover is printed on a nice, heavyweight stock closer to a book's quality than a magazine's.

What's really important to me in a crafting/artisan type magazine however is that the projects are actually do-able. In a publication of Inspirations' caliber, you'd expect such charming, intricate embroideries to be beyond the ability of the casual needleworker. Surprisingly, that's not the case at all! With each featured item there are embroidery keys and directions that guide each step, with clear illustrations. Full-sized patterns are found in the pull-out center section. If you have trouble coming up with materials and notions you can order project kits directly from the publisher. Everything is arranged to be as easy as possible, and the results are exquisite.

Every other month the arrival of Inspirations magazine spawns a new list of projects for my stash. For example, my favorite issue of 2002 had the following lineup: a charming measuring tape holder that looked like a little country cottage covered with flowers, a matching thimble holder, bullion roses paperweight, hedgehog pin cushion and needlebag, ribbon roses cushion, roses and daisies lap blanket, beribboned baby bunting, girl's overall with flowers, an elegant white ladies'linen shirt and a Victorian stitch book.

Even if you are a beginner you will find several things inside that are perfectly adapted to your ability, but which look like they require decades of experience. These are the kinds of unique items that strangers would inquire about.

Recommended for every skill level but caution: you may find yourself spending all your free time in embroidering bliss!

-Andrea, aka Merribelle

I buy lots of needlework magazines, including quilting, and this is the absolute #1 magazine I have ever read. In fact I just bought about 30 back issues.

I can't wait for the next issue to arrive. The projects are beautiful, and do-able. I think any one could do them from novice to experienced. Even the advertising is great. I love to get on the internet and surf through the sites of the advertisers.

I can't think of a single negative thing about this magazine except I wish it came more often!! If you subscribe you won't be disappointed.

For those who like stitching in any of its forms, this magazine is simply superb! I've subscribed to this magazine for some years and can't envisage not receiving it.

Glorious embroidery projects beautifully presented in a high quality glossy magazine: the pictures alone are enough to keep me subscribing. The projects are well laid out and clearly presented. As an added bonus, you can buy many of the projects in kit form and subscribers can do so at a discounted rate.

Highly recommended to those who love the visual feast of craft work.

Definitely an exquisite magazine of very high quality. In addition to having beautiful pictures and easy to follow full size patterns on high quality paper, the magazine also contains interesting stories about needlework around the world. It's fun to look at even if you don't do needlework.

Phantom of the Movies Videoscope

Phantom of the Movies VideoscopeThe Phantom of the Movie's VideoScope Magazine (Fall 2006, Issue 60) Editor/ Publisher The Phantom of the Movies

Website:

Email: phanmedia@aol.com

The glossy covers usually feature cult icons and Hammer horror monsters. The pages inside have a similar feel to a newspaper. At first glance this may dissuade you from buying it, but you would be missing out on the wide variety of reviews it features.

What comes standard in every issue are "The Phantom Speaks" (Editor's Note),"Phantom Pheedback" (Letters from Readers), and "Phantom Phlashes" (one column of upcoming horror movies/ news).

But it is the wide variety of movie reviews that VideoScope is best known for. There are new DVD release reviews spawning 80 total covering horror and other genres complete with a Review Index at the back for reference. There is something here for everyone whether you like horror, cult, underground, imported, sci-fi, Westerns, animation, or documentaries. There are also the self-explanatory sections such as "Arthouse Video", "Nazi Business", "Asian Invasion", "Mondo Retro", "Cult Corner", "Best of Anime", "TV Terrors", and more! And a "Phantom Bookshelf" is included which covers a few new genre books that hit the market.

Mixed in with the many review sections are a few long interviews as well. Scott Voisin's Character Kings" profiles veteran genre actor Ray Wise (Twin Peaks, RoboCop, Jeepers Creepers 2). Verne Langdon is covered in "Monster Star Memories" and speaks fondly of everyone from Vincent Price to a boozy Lon Chaney Jr. to a feisty Mae West. "Jeff Burr: Scare Sequels to Wartime Terror" by Calum Waddell explores Burr's film history from his directorial debut "From a Whisper to a Scream" to his sequels with Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, Pumpkinhead 2, Stepfather 2 to his current horrific non-horror film "Straight into Darkness". Interviewer Calum then turns his sights on John Hancock, director of "Let's Scare Jessica to Death" and "Mayhem".

Generally speaking, the immense list of reviews and genres covered is great. Not many mags could pull this much off. Unfortunately, there is not much in the way of industry news or previews. No genre music, comic books, and merchandise are covered at all. And the feel of the mag is PG-13 with old school horror icons on the covers, which may not appeal to hardcore Horrorites.

Cost: $24 for 6 Issues through VideoScope, Or $17 for 4 Issues from Amazon.

Bottom Line: If reading genre movie reviews gets you excited, then this is the mag for you. Anyone looking for an all-encompassing genre look, you may want to go elsewhere.

Rating: 7.5/10

Just wanted to say that I used to buy this magazine several years ago but then stopped finding it in the stores in the UK so assumed it had ceased publication. Then I found the latest issue online and ordered a copy...and I'm so glad I did!! It still has the best and most diverse movie reviews around covering horror, sci-fi, drive-in,grindhouse, blaxploitation...all the good fun stuff! Ok, so it's not all glossy and printed in color but I think that adds to the appeal. Buy an issue now and if you love it, grab a subscription!!

the other gentleman's description of this publication is excellent . my wife and i consider this a perfect bathroom reader . at just 17.00 dollars for four issues , it's about half the cost per issue of the other related magazines on the shelf (which are monthly) "FANGORIA" , "RUE MORGUE" , etc (if you can find them) . those other publications are visually hardcore and mostly contemporary in content and contain infinitely less information as well . thank you JOE KANE (the phantom of the movies) .

Marathon & Beyond

Marathon & BeyondMarathon & Beyond is, simply put, a treasure. It is published by a group of fanatical running enthusiasts who get to know their subscribers. I met them at a running expo one year, and the next year they remembered the encounter.

Ok, the magazine. Great, long articles without full-page ads for muscle-building supplements and the like. Well-thought out training tips. Race reviews. Gear reviews. Fiction and non-fiction epic running stories. And great subscriber letter feedback in the form of Q&As every issue.

No, it ain't cheap. But it is worth supporting something this great for less than the cost of ONE running shoe.

It isn't cheap, but if you are really into marathons or ultras, this is a wonderful magazine to subscribe to. Best out there.

Burda Moden - Russian Edition

Burda Moden - Russian EditionThat's a great magazine with great patterns. I've beenusing it for at least ten years already and I always get a lot of compliments on my clothes. Lve it!

What more is there to say? If you are buying this, you probably already love and trust this magazine. Not every issue is excellent, but all of them have a variety of styles and difficulties, so there is something for everyone. If I could make everything I have marked in my mom's Burda magazines over the last 2 years, I would never need to buy clothes again. The reason I am giving it 4 and not 5 stars is because their offerings for the plus-sized women are pretty unflattering as a rule I would put it at about 8 out of 10 that are frumpy and would make someone look like they are trying to (unsuccessfully) hide their bodies. Well-fitting clothes are a must for every size, right?

Additionally, Burda has a Health and a Food section in the back. The Health section tends to be fairly unoriginal and very Russian not completely grounded in fact and over-the-top. The Food section is pretty great, especially when they have desserts, but I would recommend really reading the recipe thoroughly before committing to it some of them have type-o's and other problems that will throw your recipe off-balance. I once made something with a pound and a half of cottage cheese instead of half a pound because of that whoops. Had I really thought about it, I should have been able to realize that this could not be correct, but this wasn't the only time their recipes were misleading.

Overall, this magazine is a staple for anyone who is interested in sewing and speaks Russian.

American Journal of Nursing

American Journal of NursingThis is a really great magazine for all levels of learning/nursing. As a student, I am able to learn a great deal from it. The publisher sent me 6 months worth of back issues as part of the 12 monthly issues that I ordered! I would have rather had my subscription run for the entire year instead of having 6 issues in one month and need to pay to renew this again so soon!

If I could only read one professional nursing journal AJN is the one I would read. I have read AJN since nursing school and no matter what specialty I have worked in, I have appreciated its content. I find the articles to be of extremely high quality, I discover important nursing news, and the research articles are written in language that is clear and understandable.

Buy American Journal of Nursing Now

As members of a complex profession with a range of specialties, it is easy for us to lose sight of our common core as registered professional nurses. This is the only journal covering the range of nursing practice at a professional level, incorporating original research, commentary and clinical applications. Reading it regularly provides me a regular overview of important issues facing nurses and nursing, beyond what I might seek out for my special interests in public health. A subscriber for 40+ years, I would not miss an issue.

I have been reading AJN since I graduated from nursing school 30 years ago....it is timely, well written, ballanced, and provides me with the information that I need to stay in touch with current nursing practice. Thank you to Dr. Mason for an outstanding job.

I agree with the Bradshaw review. I too subscribed for supposedly three years, but still cannot access online. Also got back issues from 4-6 months before subscribing. The LWW company is poorly organized. I had only confusing, inconsistent, and simply wrong information when trying to straighten out my account with the LIPPINCOTT publisher. Do NOT buy from them !!
