Cq : Radio Amateurs Journal

Cq : Radio Amateurs JournalI enjoy reading CQ for the articles aimed at the beginners as well as more detailed articles appealing to a more seasoned operator. It gives ideas for kits to build, antenna projects and operating procedures for the many different methods todays HAM can "work the world". I look forward to each months copy.

I'll pick up a copy of CQ every once in a while when there's an article of interest, but find it generally too limited. QST is a better general coverage amateur radio magazine the problem being that unless you belong to the ARRL (and get it with your membership), it can be hard to find. On the other hand, you can JOIN the ARRL for about the same cost as subscribing to CQ anyway ... and get a better magazine. My advice is to pass CQ by and pick up the ARRL membership with QST magazine () instead. CQ will be available on the supermarket or bookstore rack if there's a current issue you want.

CQ: Amateur Radio is a magazine geared toward amateur radio operators and enthusiasts. Ham radio is one of those hobbies that can encompass a lot of different specialties such as: Emergency communications (EMCOMM), distance communications (DXing), contesting, clubs, nets, building antenna's, public service, talking with friends, satellite communication, repeaters, weak signal operations, personal safety, etc. Due to the diversity of amateur radio it can be difficult to find a magazine that might cater to areas that you find interesting. This is the main problem that I have found with CQ. Many of the articles do not interest me or pertain to my areas of ham radio. CQ in many respects is so global that it just does not relate to me.

Reasons why CQ does not work for me include:

Too global

Not enough relevant articles that satisfy my interest

Tons of advertising (I know, a necessary evil)

Some articles are not well written or edited

Overall Assessment:

CQ does not have enough articles that interest me. You may have a different perspective. As everyone has different likes and dislikes I say give it a read for a few months and see if the articles are interesting to you.

Russian Life

Russian LifeRussian Life provides a fascinating mix of articles in each issue on things reasonably related to Russia. Some stories cover current events, others delve into recent and ancient history.

All articles are very well illustrated and are written at a level that can appeal to both the casual and the dedicated Russophile. I enjoy the magazine on one level, and my Russian born wife enjoys it on a very different level, with the main point in common being that we both read it from cover to cover.

I love the short little factoids that they also include each issue, and even find the advertisements interesting!

Lastly, they have an annual Russian calendar that I've been buying in copious quantities each year excellent for personal use and for gifts! A great magazine from a great company, and about a once-great and potentially great-again country.

I love this magazine. I have spent a lot of time studying and working in Russia and this magazine serves as a wonderful link for me to this amazing country, it's language and culture!

This magazine has so much interesting information! I try to keep up with Russian culture and I love the little slices of history and language that are added in. Those are the building blocks for all the changes Russians have already accomplished and what they hope for the future. I have been a subscriber for many years!

Inspirations - Australia

Inspirations - AustraliaInspirations is the perfect name for this publication. Every feature inside is a little gem of needleart craftsmanship that would stand out against any professional work. How they manage to keep on creating those deligthtful designs every issue without starting to look like every other pedestrian embroidery magazine I have no idea, but the editors deserve a little prayer of thanks for their high standards.

Inspirations magazine is a pleasure to look at and read. Top needlework, smocking and sewing designers from Australia and around the world publish their projects here. Lovely photography complements layouts that are clean, elegant and decidedly feminine. Advertisements are restricted to the very back, leaving the main section content uninterrupted. Even the cover is printed on a nice, heavyweight stock closer to a book's quality than a magazine's.

What's really important to me in a crafting/artisan type magazine however is that the projects are actually do-able. In a publication of Inspirations' caliber, you'd expect such charming, intricate embroideries to be beyond the ability of the casual needleworker. Surprisingly, that's not the case at all! With each featured item there are embroidery keys and directions that guide each step, with clear illustrations. Full-sized patterns are found in the pull-out center section. If you have trouble coming up with materials and notions you can order project kits directly from the publisher. Everything is arranged to be as easy as possible, and the results are exquisite.

Every other month the arrival of Inspirations magazine spawns a new list of projects for my stash. For example, my favorite issue of 2002 had the following lineup: a charming measuring tape holder that looked like a little country cottage covered with flowers, a matching thimble holder, bullion roses paperweight, hedgehog pin cushion and needlebag, ribbon roses cushion, roses and daisies lap blanket, beribboned baby bunting, girl's overall with flowers, an elegant white ladies'linen shirt and a Victorian stitch book.

Even if you are a beginner you will find several things inside that are perfectly adapted to your ability, but which look like they require decades of experience. These are the kinds of unique items that strangers would inquire about.

Recommended for every skill level but caution: you may find yourself spending all your free time in embroidering bliss!

I buy lots of needlework magazines, including quilting, and this is the absolute #1 magazine I have ever read. In fact I just bought about 30 back issues.

I can't wait for the next issue to arrive. The projects are beautiful, and do-able. I think any one could do them from novice to experienced. Even the advertising is great. I love to get on the internet and surf through the sites of the advertisers.

I can't think of a single negative thing about this magazine except I wish it came more often!! If you subscribe you won't be disappointed.

For those who like stitching in any of its forms, this magazine is simply superb! I've subscribed to this magazine for some years and can't envisage not receiving it.

Glorious embroidery projects beautifully presented in a high quality glossy magazine: the pictures alone are enough to keep me subscribing. The projects are well laid out and clearly presented. As an added bonus, you can buy many of the projects in kit form and subscribers can do so at a discounted rate.

Highly recommended to those who love the visual feast of craft work.

Definitely an exquisite magazine of very high quality. In addition to having beautiful pictures and easy to follow full size patterns on high quality paper, the magazine also contains interesting stories about needlework around the world. It's fun to look at even if you don't do needlework.

Octane

OctaneOctane is so far above the mainstream car magazines that it is hard to know quite where to start. First, while enjoy an occasional flip through Automobile, Car and Driver, etc., they are all basically the same reviews of the same cars -and while it may be interesting to someone to know that the brake rotors are larger on the 2010 Mustang/Camaro/Z-car than they were on the 2009, ultimately it's hard to wallow in it month after month.

Octane covers an appetizing range of motoring topics, with an emphasis on sporting cars from all eras. You will read about historic competition cars, classic sports cars that you might want to buy and actually drive, and get exposed to a massive number of events from tours to shows, auctions to amateur racing. Mixed in are a smattering of modern car reviews, product and book reviews, brief buyer's guides to featured attainable older cars (Porsche 928 this month) a column on watches, biographical sketches and so on.

Refreshingly, the editors seem to speak from experience -I believe editor Robert Coucher has a Jag XK120 coupe. Octane benefits from an enthusiast's voice and feels less corporate. If you want a publication to tell you the most practical car to buy for the daily grind, you might want Consumer Reports. Octane is more about indulging your passion for cars.

On the downside, being a UK publication, it's on the bloody expensive side for those of us in the States. I also find the market section too broad-brush to be directly useful -Keith Martin certainly has that covered better. Finally, for U.S. subscribers, there is a length advertising section in the back that features items for sale in Europe, so while it's an interesting glance-through, it is less relevant than it might be, considering transport and shipping costs.

But, that aside, it's a dependably good read and a handsome magazine. While I toss the others in the recycle bin after a few days, Octane tends to be a long term keeper. There is a special kind of joy to the older sports cars, and Octane captures it nicely.

This magazine is excellent magazine, so much beter than the equivalent U.S. magazines. Articles are well writeen and informative -it's one of U.K. magazines I look forward to each month and have never been disappointed. If you this "Octane" plus "Classic and Sports Car' and "Motor Sport"you will have all the inormation you will ever need about Motor Sport and classic cars.

California Explorer

California ExplorerUnless you are an expert in Cal backpacking I do not suggest buying this bland, thin, memo like paper.

I gave this as a gift to my daughter-in-law upon moving to California. She found the places described to visit as too remote, wild and was not sure worth the effort to explore. It would be a great resource for an adventurous person.

Buy California Explorer Now

I bought this for my husband as part of his Christmas present. I expected to receive a magazine. Instead it was a 16 page leaflet with holes punched in it ready to go in a file. Four of the pages are just links and information about other books and guides to buy which are about California. The paper is not nice quality and the whole thing is just black and white.

Very, very disappointed

Airstream Life

Airstream LifeEvery Airstream owner should be getting this magazine. There is a great variety of articles ranging from tectnical tips to Airstream history to places to go with your Airstream.

The magazine is printed on glossy stock with great photography. Advertisements are limited and Airstream related so that there is more information in this magazine for its size than the typical RV magazine.

I've been reading Airstream Life since it's beginning. I also read several other "RV" magazines. Airstream Life stands out among the crowd of "RV style" publishers.

The magazine is quality. This is not your standard flimsy paper magazine. Each issue is thick, perfect bound, and color throughout.

On top of the physical quality, what goes into the magazine is always interesting. It is a "cover to cover" read. The information is great, and really is not just for Airstream owners!

I subscribed when this magazine first came out.

I found advertising for businesses I could trust to help me with my '68 Land Yacht restoration.

The best column is how not to get taken when purchasing a vintage airstream.

It is amazing at the cons out therejacking up prices for items that are modern or easily available for less...buyer beware.

Also John Irwin's column is fun to learn ways to modify and adapt these trailers for personal convenience.

Two thumbs up for this quality magazine for airstream enthusiasts.

Althought this magazine is targeted towards the Airstream owner, it is a great resource for anyone on the road traveling across the United States and then some. If you don't own an Airstream you will after reading your first issue. Packed with great information, product reviews, travel info, wonderful photos and a whole bunch of tidbits for everyone. The best RV magazine on the market today. But don't listen to me, pick one up and you'll agree.

Ride Cycling Review

Ride Cycling ReviewWell written and not yet littered with advertisement. Interesting and relavent information about the "up and coming" and established pro-cyclist. It is an Australian publication and it talks about all international riders but with slightly more focus on the Aussies. However, I like the neutrality when they feature Contador vs. some of the U.S. pro Lance slant.
