Latina Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Latina MagazineI don't think it's fair to make Latina magazine be the be-all, end-all magazine for American Latinas. It's not like we throw a fit when Cosmopolitan perpetuates "female" stereotypes. I understand that for minorities, it would be nice to hold mainstream media to a higher standard, but sometimes, don't you just want to kick back on the couch and not stress?

For those moments of kicking back, not stressing, and not finding fault with everything around me, I love reading Latina magazine. Thoughtful articles and first-person essays, easy recipes, and great trends.

And, I'm not even Latina -I'm Asian-American. And I have to say, reading this magazine has made me appreciate just that much more how we are all sisters in this world, just trying to find happiness, love, and a hot pair of shoes.

This is one of the best magazines I've ever read. It's not full of ads. It has articles on topics which interest me. It helps me to brush up on my Spanish. The clothing and makeup featured are suitable to the everyday woman. Unlike other magazines, you won't see clothes that are only suitable on a runway and that aren't really affordable. What I love is that they always tell you where an item can be found and the cost of the item on the same page. You don't have to root through ridiculously small print in the back of the magazine to find out where you can locate the clothes or makeup. Because Latin women come in all shades, they give makeup tips which can be used by everyone. I'm an African American woman who has had subscriptions to Elle and to Honey Magazine. I have found Latina to be far more helpful and to have better fashions.

I received this magazine as a reward for taking surveys, so I am not actually paying for the subscription I have. However, I don't regret picking it as the reward. I will say this: I do believe Latina Magazine to be an acquired taste. It won't be for every Latina, nor will it be for every one, in general. At most, it's just a fun magazine to read when you have some time to kill. There are some pretty heartfelt stories in some of the issues as well and hey, even some great recipes in them and who could go wrong with that?

I read a lot of reviews that blasted this magazine for its use of "Spanglish" because it makes those of us who speak "Spanglish" look badly. I'm not ashamed of my use of "Spanglish" and I think it's sad that Latinas judge each other like this. Not all of us grew up immersed in the Spanish language and thus, are not fluent.

I really enjoy receiving the magazine, it's taught me a lot about being proud of my Mexican heritage and even this morning, I was sharing it with my almost 13-year old son. Pitbull was in this month's issue and my son loves Pitbull and his music. We also looked through the magazine and I had him trying to translate some of the ads and articles. My son is going to grow up speaking "Spanglish" like me.

Recently, the magazine had an article about being fluent or not; not being fluent doesn't make me any less Mexican or any less proud. I'm glad that this magazine is here for Latinas like me.

I would definitely recommend this to Latinas all over!

Electric Flight (1-year auto-renewal)

Electric FlightI bought a subscription of this for my father-in-law as an early Christmas gift in November of 2009. I was told though that he wouldn't receive a copy until March. I was a little miffed at the late start, but let him know it was coming. By the third week in March of this year he still hadn't recieved it. I called the company and they said it should arrive in a week or so. Now, in the second week in April, he still hasn't gotten it. Once again I called them to find out the problem. This time I was told that they had cancelled the subscription because delivery of the magazine had failed. They had cancelled it without notice or refunding my account. After 10 minutes on the phone I finally got them to reinstate the subscription. Now I'm supposed to expect the July edition in May. Aka wait at least another 6 weeks to receive something that is already late.

My father-in-law loves the magazine, but frankly it's hard to appreciate something you never receive. If it doesn't show up in the coming weeks I'm cancelling the subscription and sending him a very apologetic card.

After purchasing the subscription it seems to take forever to get your first copy(but no matter how you order a magazine it seems this way). The magazine is excellent. It concentrates on smaller RC airplanes, especially electrics.

Expensive magazine (over $3.00 per issue) geared to the new flier. Lots of advertising embedded in the articles. You would be better served by logging on to rcgroups.com or wattflier.com to get good solid articles and unbiased reviews from the people who bought and fly the planes. Oh yeah, the half dressed teeny-boppers on many of the covers makes you wonder what time zone (60's perhaps) the editors live in!

I ordered a subscription for the Electric Flight magazine online and have yet to receive an issue. I believe the magazine would be something I would enjoy reading but I wouldn't know. If I had any suggestions to offer, I would never order online again for a magazine subscription as this seems to be a waste of money, time, and effort.

Library Sparks

Library SparksWhat a great new magazine for childrens' librarians. Each issue has ideas for lessons that are adaptable for different grade levels. There is an interview with an author. There are several reproducible pages that connect with the lessons presented.

The only downside of the last issue was that the suggested websites to view had URL's that were much too long to type. A lot of the websites weren't that good either. I wish it were a little cheaper to subscribe. The good stuff is always expensive!

Russian Life

Russian LifeRussian Life provides a fascinating mix of articles in each issue on things reasonably related to Russia. Some stories cover current events, others delve into recent and ancient history.

All articles are very well illustrated and are written at a level that can appeal to both the casual and the dedicated Russophile. I enjoy the magazine on one level, and my Russian born wife enjoys it on a very different level, with the main point in common being that we both read it from cover to cover.

I love the short little factoids that they also include each issue, and even find the advertisements interesting!

Lastly, they have an annual Russian calendar that I've been buying in copious quantities each year excellent for personal use and for gifts! A great magazine from a great company, and about a once-great and potentially great-again country.

I love this magazine. I have spent a lot of time studying and working in Russia and this magazine serves as a wonderful link for me to this amazing country, it's language and culture!

They cover everything from Russian history to religion to fairy tales and beyond. If you are even the slightest bit interested in Russia and its history, you won't be let down by this publication.

Colorado Outdoors

Colorado OutdoorsI really enjoy this magazine very much! The photographs are simply amazing, the articles are interesting & very well put together. It's nice to be able to see parts of Colorado in my own livingroom, & be able to decide where I'd like to venture to, rather than make a blind trip somewhere & be disappointed. The publisher also gives you the option of a free Hunting or Fishing guide to accompany your subscription. I can tell alot of time goes into the structure of this magazine. Kudos to the Publisher of this magazine!

...no advertisements! This magazine is small, but it's packed with good, timely information, as well as beautiful pictures of the flora, fauna, and big ol' rocks of Colorado! I am very pleased with this magazine and highly recommend it. If nothing else, I've found a few more places to add to my "must visit" list for Colorado!

The English HomeThis reaqder is a true Anglophile and wants this new, year old magazine to survive. Judging from the amount of advertizing it receives, I'm not sure that it will. Each edition brings decorating features, some English recipies, homes for sale, and descriptions of all manner of things English. Written for North American readers, it is a delight.

-A beautiful magazine.

-Includes U.S. sources for British designers and home furnishings.

-Sponsors fabulous house and garden tours in England.

-I leave past issues around the house, and guests ooo and ahhh over the magazine.

I have really enjoyed my subscription to this beautiful magazine. NO DRUG ads.....have you noticed that most of our home grown "home" rags are just crammed with multi-paged pharmaceutical advertisements? Are these especially targeted to women? Country Living is a thin read indeed if you tear out all these ads.

Anyway, this gorgeous British home magazine always has at least one piece about a significant historical property..... but also, each issue has a fascinating story about another, less "significant" property that has been remade over many years and a lot of hard work and imagination into a family home!

The photography is charming.....the pages high quality paper and I will continue to subscribe, foregoing all the American counterparts as their subs end.

I am reading it from Page to page and enjoying all the wonderful photos.

Import Tuner

Import TunerThe product is okay, but the response from Import Tuner Mag has been VERY, VERY slow. Do not plan on renewing subscription again!

This is a great magazine for any import car lover. There is a lot of good information in these magazines. My husband likes seeing all the different cars and it inspires him to continue fixing up his own. As far as the shipping goes, I've only recieved a magazine in a protective covering when they have other loose materials. Any damage is from the postal services, and the turn around time is typical magazine subscription time8-12 weeks. We are very pleased with the magazine and can't wait for the next issue!

I recently subscribed to the magazine as a gift for my boyfriend. He's been looking out for it in the mail, when he finally received it, he got the March and April issue already..yay, right? NO!...the ones that he got were all ripped and torn...all the sides of about the first 5 and last 5 pages because they were not in any type of protective cover! So disappointing...I hope that maybe the next ones won't be in such a bad condition.

Bird Watchers Digest

Bird Watchers DigestThis is one of the few magazines I read from cover-to-cover. Bird Watcher's Digest has something for everyone. They offer advice on how to improve feeder systems for individuals who enjoy backyard birdwatching. They provide informative identification tips for those trickier species for people who have just begun their journey into the feathered realm. Additionally, they have great authors & astounding birders, like Kenn Kauffman (who's both), who regularly write short articles for them. These should appeal to everyone at whatever experience level. The size of the magazine makes it easy to tote into the field so you can pull it out & read while waiting for that elusive rarity to show up for you to get a quick glimpse of before it dashes off to parts unknown again. I highly recommend this magazine. Besides, you can't be in the field all of the time & this makes the perfect thing to read on those cold, wet, rainy days when even the birds are smart enough to stay in-doors.

When I cancel everything else, this will be the bird magazine I keep. BIRD WATCHERS DIGEST is the publication to read if you want the low-down on your favorite bird. For example, I am partial to house wrens, and what do I discover in the July/August BWD, but that my little buddy may be wrecking havoc on his much larger neighbors. Well too bad, the Wren eats his share of insects everyday, keeping my organic garden relatively pest free, so I can't complain.

The Wren (Troglodytes aedon) article is comprehensive, even showing a range map with summer, winter and year round habitat. Topics include "What to look and listen for"; "When and Where to Look"; "Feeding Behavior"; "Courtship and Nesting Behavior" a second article "House Wren: The Dark Side" discusses the purported misbehavior of the Wren. Both articles are filled with informative photos, including shots of the baby Wrens in their nest.

I discovered BWD through my old boss who is a "bow and arrow" hunter, who spends long hours sitting in trees waiting for deer. While he waits he observes the birds around him and he says BWD has helped him to while away the hours, not only by teaching him how to identify the birds but to understand their nature. (He once fell out of his tree and broke his leg. He hobbled around for a month after a month in traction. No, he wasn't reading his magazine, he was trying to get a better view of a bird!!)

The July/August issue includes a "Identify Yourself" section covers "Shore Birds" just in time for our annual human pilgrimage to the sea.

Buy Bird Watchers Digest Now

This magazine has been very informative and enjoyable for our family of bird watchers. The articles are usually educational or humorous, or both! Excellent photography. Topics might include not only birds but equipment for bird watching, awesome places to see specific birds and when, environmental issues or "laugh-out-loud" bird watching experiences. For the thinking bird watcher as well as the backyard bird feeder enthusiast. Try it!

Read Best Reviews of Bird Watchers Digest Here

With the size and appearance of a slimmed-down READER'S DIGEST, the less famous BIRD WATCHER'S DIGEST is a chirpy little optimist of a magazine not so very different from, say, a black-capped chickadee.

Short and moderate-sized articles cover specific species, how-to/techniques, choosing the right birding equipment, and joy-of-birding anecdotes.

Advertisements abound but do not overwhelm. Some are quite helpful.

BWD is a perky standard for birders both casual and serious.

Want Bird Watchers Digest Discount?

Bird Watchers Digest is in my opinion a must have magazine for anyone that has any interest in birds. From the backyard feeder to the world traveler observer, BWD has enough content in all areas to satisfy anyones particular interest, on any level. There is even a regular section in each issue dedicated to back yard birding. It isn't a magazine that is at all snobby and considers back yard novices peasants. On the other hand, it is also a very technical and educational periodical for those that are advanced enough to actually take advantage of the many world wide travel suggestions and deals that are offered throughout the book. I first picked up some BWD back issues on Ebay and enjoyed it enough to order a regular subscription. I was particularly impressed by its compact size, similar to Readers Digest. It can be easily carried along in a purse or bag for traveling, and of course it makes a perfect addition to your bathroom library. The only caution that I would suggest to anyone that decides to buy a subscription is to pass on the offer of the digest newsletter that you can subscribe too for every other month that BWD isn't offered. At $16 a for 6 issues it is not worth it at all. Its a very thin, (about 10 pages) pamphlet style publication that has as many ads in it as helpful info. Its a rip off in all honesty. I let my own subscription to it lapse after the first year. You are much better off subscribing to the BWD email that is sent out periodically that is free, and loaded with article highlights and helpful info. Overall I highly recommend BWD for all bird enthusiasts on all levels. I think you will find yourself looking forward to each and every issue...

Wired (1-year auto-renewal)

WiredThis magazine was really good over 10 years ago, was thick and filled with awesome articles. I find these days it is filled with tons of ads, and not many core computer science type articles. Some of the articles are too futuristic and filled with all pop terms/buzz words and not much substance. I like a simple, powerful technological type magazine. Nevertheless, it is one of those magazines that cater to a tech crows. I like MIT Technology review far better than this magazine.

I subscribe to only 1 magazine: Wired. I am an older female, not the typical demographic, and although I have always loved techy stuff, Wired goes far beyond that to cover an amazingly wide array of topics. The articles are in-depth and educational. Even though some terminology and subjects (like gaming) are beyond my interests, I find myself reading every issue cover-to-cover.

Buy Wired (1-year auto-renewal) Now

Given that you can get any and all information from the web and in real time I have dumped all my magazines or switched to digital versions. Wired is the one I can not let go of. For anyone why loves technology this is the newsweek equivalent. It is packed with great articles.

Read Best Reviews of Wired (1-year auto-renewal) Here

The only thing I would really like Wired to improve is their access to the digital version. I've been a happy subscriber for years, which means I can access the digital version as well as the print that is delivered to my house. Problem is, I don't own an iPad or a Nook; since I have a Nexus 7 I appear to be out of luck. This just doesn't seem right and I hope they resolve it very soon.

Want Wired (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

I have to say that I get my copy of Wired for free. It is simply not worth subscribing to.

Why? The writers either fawn excessively over some product or person or they are so naive that they believe anything a celebrity/writer/etc tells them. You could sell them just about any story as real even if it was about aliens in Roswell. I have never encountered a magazine that continually passes off truths based on total hearsay. Ex; the story about Facebook and the movie was ludicrous to say the least.

On the other hand, Wired usually have at least one interesting article in each magazine. As such if you can get a subscription cheap enough, it might be worth it.

Knit Simple

Knit SimpleI have been knitting for 5 years, and I've tried a number of knit magazines, including Interweave Knits, Knitters, Creative Knitting, and Vogue. I just sent in my renewal for Knit Simple, whereas all the others have fallen by the wayside. It offers excellent variety, clear instructions and photos, a range of skill levels but plenty of projects that a less experienced knitter could tackle. The articles are helpful (such as scaling down projects for petite sizes, scaling up for larger sizes, a discussion of the characteristics of different fibers), and the product and book reviews are concise and informative. They often have groups of projects with a theme, such as vests for the family, and cable sweaters for the family. I knit for my two children and husband, so these family themes are a welcome feature. Plenty of home projects such as afghans and pillows are included as well. Each project includes a close up, actual size, of the yarn used for comparison with substitution yarns, as well as the 1-5 numbered system for universal yarn weight. Each project also is rated on a scale from beginner to advanced. The majority of projects are beginner to intermediate, which I prefer even though I'm more experienced. I have no patience for the intricate, complex patterns found in Interweave (and often Knitters and Vogue as well). The fashions in Knit Simple are not way out there, like in some magazines, but very wearable and classic for the most part. I used to rip the occasional pattern out of those other magazines, recycling the rest, but I have kept all my Knit Simple issues in their entirety.

I get two knitting magazines, this one and Interweave Knits. They seem to arrive at the same time every time, and every time I am struck by how much SIMPLER Interweave Knits is---There is always a far higher ratio of patterns I mark to try in Interweave than Knit Simple. I don't know if the knitting powers that be out there realize how many beginning knitters there really are. What I would love is a magazine that really tackles the basics---perhaps works us through a few great stitch patterns, and puts them in a simple scarf, or shows how to make a basic winter hat. I have tried hard to follow the instructions here for socks---which seem to be the rage to knit right now. They lose me right away. I don't mind if a magazine includes a few harder patterns even if it's called Knit Simple---you have to have something to work for. But most of the time, there are mostly sweater patterns here. I think there are a lot of truly simple things to knit, and a LOT of beginning knitter who would love a magazine that really catered to them.

I do love just looking at the yarn ads, and reading their book reviews, and the knitting essays at the end. But I won't be renewing my subscription.

Guitar World (1-year)

Guitar WorldI've been a subscriber for some time now and I find this magazine to be a great bargain. This magazine/CD combo is a must for the electric guitarist. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that there is too much emphasis on metal for my taste.

Is any one frustrated by the fact they paid good money to buy Guitar World magazine only to experience, in this case, the dreaded sense of Deja vu? Future Publishing is presenting as new, previously published articles again. I am referring to the trio of Pink Floyd articles that appeared in the Nov 2010 issue of GW. Wouldn't it piss you off to remember you read the same articles the previous year in another magazine. If you weren't aware, the illustration on pg47 was originally presented as the cover of last year's Classic Rock magazine Vol.139 2009 also by Future Publishing. Incidentally a better cover as it was in the form of Hi-def Lenticular cover! Let's see:

The title of the Article was changed from "Tear Down The Wall" to "Legends of The Wall"

Introductions, the same...

Credited to Glenn Povey, Illustrations by Magictorch, check

Bob Ezrin Interview by Jaan Uhelszki, representing Classic Rock now reworded/edited to represent GW especially the questions but the Erzin responses were repeated verbatim.

The title of the Kevin Murphy article was originally presented as "Behind the Wall", now reads Triumph of The Wall." Detailing Alan Parkers experience making the movie, the article was again recycled verbatim.

Classic Rock magazine went a step further and did a roundup w/ 21 different of rockstars Dio, Portnoy , Wakeman etc.and got them to share their favorite Pink Floyd experience. GW was too busy patting themselves on the back for lifting the first 3 articles.

First, while the articles were informative, they were more appropriate to and better presented in a magazine detailing the Rock Experience such as Rolling Stone, Spin or Classic Rock magazine. Actual guitar related content was minimal.

Second, I am certain the excuse will be related to country of origins, Classic Rock mag being more widely sold in Europe but if you can read english, have access to Barnes and Noble, Border Books etc. or even a computer you can buy CR Magazine anywhere in the USA. This is the very point of concern when Future Publishing bought out Guitar One and Guitar World. These 2 magazine coexisted for decades and still published original material alongside GFPM, Guitar School and Guitar Player. Why does Future Publishing have the right to repeatedly present year old material as current and original?

The magazines should conspicuously note re published articles and offer subscribers additional content or just offer original material!

I like reading the Readers mail and the readers art and the reader guitar players. I will agree with another poster they do repost articles but my memory is so bad that I most likely wouldn't catch it unless I had read the article previously. I only read what's interesting to me in the magazine so I don't always read it cover to cover sometimes I wait till the following month to read the readers mail and if they are raving about an article from the previous month and I haven't read it I will read it. This is the blackest magazine out there. The musicians all wear black. The tattos are black. The ads are black. And just for visual aesthetic, the blackness of the layout is offset by a bit of black on the opposing page.

If you are a teenage metal fan, this magazine is for you! But if your musical tastes veer outside of metal, you won't find much of interest here. Yeah, now and then you see the obligatory nod to SRV or Jimi, who we are told we should worship as gods. There are lotsa articles on old metal guitarists you wish would just go away, like Yngwie. But you will never ever see an article on Chet Atkins or Wes Montgomery. Maybe if they had more tattoos. . .
