American Bungalow

American BungalowIf you're into bungalows or craftsman furnishing and decor, this magazine is a "must have". I was thrilled to discover it and read it cover to cover, both for the articles and for the ads, which show hard-to-find items for bungalows by small suppliers as well as big ones.

The articles cover restored old homes and new ones in the style -how they are decorated and maintained -and there are lots of examples of what people have done with their bungalows. There is a newsletter section at the back with pertinent events and information about preservation and bungalow neighborhoods across the country.

At first I was put off by the price, but as magazines go, American Bungalow is a real standout. In fact it looks more like a book than a magazine. The photography and design are first rate. I just wish it were more frequent than 4 times a year.

Not only does this magazine highlight the "before & after" photos of renovating these beautiful houses, they also offer project ideas, tips & techniques, sources for materials, and great historical data as well. We've solved many of the "remuddling" mysteries of our bungalow by relying on ABM. Of equal importance is their online forum--a group of bungalow-friendly individuals from around the country who trade ideas, advice and support. This is an active and knowledgeable community. If you fall in love with the magazine, you can get back issues through the website. It's beautifully done.

I first discovered American Bungalow magazine about a year ago and was instantly hooked! This magazine is full of helpful information for anyone who is interested in the era of the American Arts and Crafts movement (architecture, furniture, and decor). Although I do not own a bungalow house, I would love to someday. It doesn't matter whether your interest in these houses is scholarly or practical. As a woodworker who loves to build classic A&C furniture, I value the magazine for its ability to show me beautiful photographs of this timeless furniture in its natural context a bungalow house! The ads are a great resource for all things Bungalow and Arts&Crafts, and the stories about famous bungalows and bungalow neighborhoods are very inspiring to the house lovers among us.

Treat yourself to this magazine I highly recommend it!

I love this magazine.

I have a hard time justifying it as a magazine thoughit's not your usual "full of ads and worthless information" magazine. This one is a keeper. I have a shelf devoted to them (and I know when one is missing toodon't even ask to borrow one!) I hear that even the back issues sell on Ebay for huge amounts of money. It means that much to a lot of people.

I find myself scurrying to my mailbox hoping to find it every 3 monthsonce I receive it I relish in it for daysI have bought two subscriptions just to keep the harmony in my marriage when it arrives and my husband wants to read too. Problem solved for under $30!

Really it's not a magazine subscriptionit's a magazine prescription for the dreamer in all of usthere is joy, awe, and lots of ooh's and ahh's on each and every page.

Even if you don't own a bungalowlike meit is still an inspiration for those that wish they could and those that admire the lifestyle and memories that old homes bring to heart. American Bungalow takes me back to Grandma's house and to me that is what makes me love the magazine all that much more. It's not just reading the articles (which are wonderful) it's the feeling the magazine produces (the wonderful photos)that never lets me downto once again be in Grandma's house. The "feeling" of the home I wish to have.

This is the magazine that best reflects the original spirit of the Arts & Crafts, bungalow, craftsman and closely-related styles. It manages a nice blend of coverage of older houses, furniture, and decor while mixing in renovation, the occasional modern adaptation, preservation activities, research and historical articles, and so on. The magazine is expensive and only comes out quarterly, but production values are high, the content is wonderful, and even the ads rise to the level of serving as a sourcebook. This is one of the few magazines to which we subscribe that we keep.

Again, expensive compared to most magazines, particularly on a subscription basis, but jewels tend to be expensive!

Library Sparks

Library SparksWhat a great new magazine for childrens' librarians. Each issue has ideas for lessons that are adaptable for different grade levels. There is an interview with an author. There are several reproducible pages that connect with the lessons presented.

The only downside of the last issue was that the suggested websites to view had URL's that were much too long to type. A lot of the websites weren't that good either. I wish it were a little cheaper to subscribe. The good stuff is always expensive!

Pillsbury Classic Cookbooks

Pillsbury Classic CookbooksI subscribed to this magazine when I found out that over time, I'd accumulated over 20 issues of it just picking it up at the checkout counter at my local grocery store every now and then. I must admit, even though the subscription is a bit pricey, it is a great buy and to me at least, worth every penny. I await it with great expectation each month wondering what tasty novelties they've come up with next.

The format of this magazine is like a really great cookbook. Every recipe has a picture, is very clearly stated with its ingredients and steps of the procedure, even nutrition information and it also includes useful tips on measuring, ingredient substitution and the like.

The recipes range from old classics to trendy new stuff to try if you've got adventurous tastebuds. I completely love it and experiment thoroughly with it. I recommend that you try it too sometime.

My only complaint, if any, is that they sometimes get carried away suggesting the use of Pillsbury products as main ingredients, if you can't find one or an acceptable substitute, you can't go on! However, it's infrequent that they do so and in no way a reason not to subscribe to this great magazine.

I'm a sucker for comfort food. I was raised by my single father who was an atrocious cook. Every Sunday we would go over to my grandmother's house for dinner and that was my sanctuary from his horrible tasting meals. She would make fried chicken, meat loafs, home made lasagnas, fluffy mashed potatoes, banana cream pie...you know...comfort grandma type food. Well these magazines have those kinds of meals; just real good, simple yet delectable hearty meals.

They always put a bit of a spin on the classics. For instance in this months issue they put mozzarella cheese sticks in the middle of their meat loaf. Or they have a fried chicken recipe in a previous issue where you bread the chicken in taco seasoning. Then they have several completely original ideas like chicken breasts cooked in apple juice, baby carrots, and honey mustard topped with peanuts (it sounds strange, but it's to die for). I have yet to make a bad meal from these books.

They have pictures for every recipe; which I love. I'm a very visual person. It can't just sound good in order for me to make it; it has to look good too. They also list the nutritional information on each recipe as well. This is great if you are counting calories or carbohydrates.

They've had issues on tones of different themes like brunch, low fat cooking, desserts, hamburger, potluck, casseroles; the list goes on and on. Every month is a different theme.

I have made food for bake drives, potlucks, family gatherings and it never fails for people to comment on my cooking and ask for the recipe...never. These books make me look like I really know what I'm doing in the kitchen LOL.

Penthouse Variations (1-year)

Penthouse VariationsMy husband and I love getting our monthly subscription. We read it to each other in the bath tub and get all hot and bothered. We often talk about the stories inside and discuss our interest in the fantasies we've read about. Variations has definitely led us to try a lot of fun things together.

If you find yourself interested in trying some of the things you are reading about in this mag, check out Intense Games DVD, it is an adult party game that makes fantasies reality. Really.

Penthouse Variations is a spin-off magazine of Penthouse that includes Reader's Letters, bondage or BDSM letters, reviews, etc. It also contain short pictorials and long stories about people who get tied up for a weekend or become willing sex slaves for there partner. Variations also have cover girls and will normally advertise sex toys and sex machines as well as the usual magic pill. Contents include S&M Letters, Wife Watching Letters, and Sex Toy Stories. Although many of the stories focus on couples, there are some that explore the thrill of the casual encounter. These wild and sensual stories have altered people's lives and will open your mind to the erotic possibilities that can exist.

Weight Watchers Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Weight Watchers MagazineThere are not too many magazines that you can really enjoy. Some are filled with way too many ads, and others have a lot of things that really don't apply. This magazine blends weight loss issues, along with articles, on food, fashion, and beauty. Their recipes are easy to make, and don't require a lot of complicated ingredients that you can't find. I have enjoyed the articles on beauty and fashion as sometimes we loose focus on the positive things we can do for ourselves. Best of all even if you are not on their program the magazine still has a lot to offer you. I would consider this magazine if you are concerned about eating healthy, losing weight, and trying to look good.

This is an excellent magazine for those who are trying to lose weight or maintain their weight. It provides recipes for well balanced, low fat meals. It usually features a motivational article, as well as articles on proper nutrition and exercise in order to achieve a healthier lifestyle. I wish that that the articles were a little more substantive, however, and that the magazine, as a whole, would have less filler. Still, as a current subscriber, I find the magazine to be a generally useful tool for someone who is trying to effect a more healthy lifestyle.

I lost 34 pounds on Weight Watchers and part of that was because of their phenomenal publication. My wife and enjoy every issue, filled with new research, helpful facts, loads of coupons and those recipes.

My wife enjoys cooking from the recipes. What I love about WW is that you can live a normal life and eat the things you want. You'll be surprised at how many calories you can cut out of a regular dish just by substituting certan ingredients. And you don't even taste the difference! Sometimes its even better.

If you're trying to lose weight through WW, you really should have the magazine. It's inexpensive and it will help you along the way.

I love going to Weight Watcher meetings and recently subscribed to the magazine. I am impressed. I have stopped almost all subscriptions but I will keep this one going. It has the best of everything, including the motivation we need to keep us going.

You may think this will be geared just for the person who is on Weight Watchers but it has more. You will find articles on beating diseases, articles on beauty, fashion and makeup, exercise tips, advice on supplements and of course, recipes. I don't cook much but I have used some of the recipes in this magazine. I found them easy and healthy. This is a great magazine and I highly recommend it.

Weight Watchers has helped me stay in a healthy weigth range for five years now. During the course of time, we all need motivation and encouragement. I no longer attend WW meetings, but I read this magazine and use WW's website to help keep me headed in the right diretion. The recipes are good and trying new food keeps me from getting bored. Reading about the success stories of others helps me stay in line too. The advertisements also provide a source of new snack and exercise sources. I only wish the magazine came out every month instead of bi-monthly!

Brides

BridesEven though I'm in the wedding industry, there are a lot of things about getting married that I didn't know. I have found this magazine great for ideas from the big stuff down to the very smallest detail.

I get Martha Stewart's, Brides, and Bridal Guide magazines. (I'm a magazine addict... and there was a magazine sale on Amazon...) The price for Brides magazine is pretty good, and I like that you get 12 a year. (Martha is only 4 and Bridal Guide is 6.) I can't say that it has really outstanding articles; a majority of the magazine is ads -but I basically look through the ads/pictures to get ideas for what I want and rip them out when I find something I like.

The articles that they do have, I have found pretty helpful or at the very least entertaining. I think that their articles are better than Bridal Guide at least. Martha Stewart I feel is more crafty, but if you sign up to her wedding newsletter... you basically get the magazine in pieces through email for free anyway...

They have the basics advise column, new/fun highlights, seasonal wedding spreads, male editor doing 1 task for his wedding a month, honeymoon planning section, and then usually a main article about one topic a magazine (i.e. picking your dress, choosing an officiant, etc.). I agree with a post I saw where it feels somewhat to be the same kind of stuff every month due to the majority of pages being ads, but I would say a lot of the ads change pictures month-to-month, so I still didn't mind. If you're looking for some really intense/in-depth articles I can't say this is the place to look.... but I don't think any wedding magazine will give you that.

Buy Brides Now

I get it, some people like luxury a lot, and I don't mind paying for quality, but when you start recommending 200.00 per person gifts for each wedding guest you've gone overboard. Unfortunately most of this magazine is ads for overpriced coture dresses that are just plain ugly, and that is my review from more than 6 issues in.

Read Best Reviews of Brides Here

As with all Bridal magazines, this one is FULL of ads which can get a little bit old. But, aside from Martha Stewart Weddings, it seems to have the most variety from edition to edition. Definitely worth the subscription as opposed to Modern Bride.

Way too many ads. I felt that this magazine didn't really have any great articles. Out of a 1 year subscription I maybe got 3 good and useful articles out of it.

Zyzzyva

ZyzzyvaThis magazine is for those that are serious about writing. These portable anthologies are chocked full of powerful short stories, poems and essays by the best critical thinkers and creators on the Western Seaboard. By reading this magazine, as a writer, it completely sets the standard for the variety of subjects that can actually get published and read by people all over the nation.

In consequence, because of all the great writing found in these collections,it makes the mag a fantastic read for the non-writer as well.

Definitely check this out. It oozes West Coast life, especially Californian in all of its diversity.

Art & Antiques

Art & AntiquesART & ANTIQUES for collectors of the fine and decorative arts shows considerable growth as a journal. The quality of production values has increased and so has the content. For example, the current issue covers well-written articles ranging from 'The Rise of Sculpture' ('Into the Third Dimension' by Sallie Brady), to 'Chinese Classics', to 'New England Museums' to 'Avant-Garde Toys'. And if that spectrum doesn't appeal to the reader, then open the journal and find excellent in depth beautifully illustrated essays on Leonora Carrington called 'Nobody's Muse' by Edward M. Gómez and a rich article by Editor John Dorfman 'Golden Opportunities' in which he follows trends and sales of Chinese antiquities.

There are articles on current events such as the many art fairs around the world, reviews of art books, and notes on concepts being discussed at this time in the art world. The ads are well constructed and vary from decorative arts resources to contemporary galleries to auction houses. The color reproduction throughout is excellent and the quality of paper is far better than the magazine's competitors. This is a magazine worth investigating as a subscription. Grady Harp, September 11

This great magazine blends articles about antiques and fine art and craft in a way that is accessable to collector and novice alike. The layout is clean and well designed with insightfull but not stuffy text.

Onearth

OnearthThe Natural Resources Defense Council, which produces "Onearth," has done a great job with this journal. I just received their issue on "nanotechnology," a topic that is already being utilized, but has received little scrutiny. Like most technologies, it will likely have positive and negative applications, and the people at "Onearth" are so good at providing thoughtful analysis of this and so many other topics.

"Onearth" blows the whistle on many ecological disasters, including the mining of "tar sands" in Canada, which will destroy a forest twice the size of Florida. Yet, little acts like subscribing to "Onearth" connects one to a large community of scholars, authors, journalists, scientists, photographers, educators and lawyers who are challenging the fossil fuel cartel and other industries that have little regard for what's left of the globe's wilderness. In fact, what's left of the globe's wilderness is specifically targeted by extractive industries as they contain huge potential profits for Exxon, Weyerhauser, Newmont Mining and other branches of the corporate leviathan. The Corporation

And it's people like NRDC's Robert Kennedy, Jr. who are doing great work to defend the earth. In addition to being a lawyer and a professor, Kennedy is an author Crimes Against Nature: How George W. Bush and His Corporate Pals Are Plundering the Country and Hijacking Our Democracy and a radio host on Air America Defying the Distortion: How We Created Air America, the New Radio Revolution.

For only $15, a subscription to "Onearth" is a great way to throw some grains of sand into the gears of the machine.

Psychotherapy Networker

Psychotherapy NetworkerI originally subscribed to this magazine when it was the Family Therapy Networker, and found it very enlightening. I was a new family therapist and felt it was a classy professional magazine, more substantial than Psychology today for practitioners. The focus still is psychotherapy and recent research trends, but broader than just family therapy. It is accessible to laypersons yet intelligent enough for the professional.

Psychotherapy Networker

This magazine is a beautifully done publication. Articles and advertising are very current, interesting, and helpful. Great way to keep abreast of things concerning your mental health career. Topics include: life coaching and other specific trainings, conferences and seminars, products to use or sell, client issues, building a practice, becoming more technology savvy, book reviews of suggested reading, and more. Very good reading at a great price. You can also obtain two CE credits by reading an issue of the magazine--details inside (nice bonus).

Buy Psychotherapy Networker Now

This is a niche magazine with a very intelligent readership. It's beautifully written. It won a National Magazine Award for Public Service one year,

beating out The Atlantic. And it has been nominated for several other National Magazine Awards. These are the

Pulitzer Prizes for magazines. You can count on the Networker to take an intelligent look at a psychology trend,

and then go beyond the basics, to see where the issue sits within the larger culture. This is where the brilliance comes

in. You actually don't have to be a therapist to get a lot out of it. Plus, it isn't a cheerleader for its field. It has good critical thinking.

(Disclosure: I am still listed on the masthead as a features editor, as I used to edit a section and I have written many articles for them in the past. I work as a freelance writer for many publications. But I'd say what I'm saying even if I hadn't. The editor, Rich Simon, is one of the smartest in the business.)

As a psychologist and family therapist, I must confess that this is the only journal I still sit down to read cover to cover. It's been a great way to stay connected over the years to new developments and trends in the field of therapy, and it also helps create a sense of community with fellow therapists. I love the very human approach taken by many regular contributors who write not as 'experts' but as vulnerable and imperfect 'coping models'. I miss the excellent film reviews from a therapeutic angle by Frank Pittman, who recently passed away; its savvy approach to modern culture is one of the things that help keeps the Networker so relevant.

Zest

ZestZest is filled with information not found in American fitness magazines. It's funny, cheeky, and wise. Its layout is beautiful and its content is full of information from traditional and non-traditional health experts. It costs more than most fitness magazines, but it's absolutely worth it!
