Spectator - England
It is right wing, by British standards, and supports the Conservative Party. This bias is reflected in its editorials and most, but not all, of its articles.
Their spectator.co.uk website is very good. It contains most of what's in the print edition plus quite a lot that isn't. Some regular columns are not included in full, except with a paid online subscription. This is unfortunately true of my favorite, Dot Wordsworth's 'Mind Your Language', which covers topics relating to English usage. The crossword is a recent inclusion in the free online edition. Some readers used to buy the printed magazine just for that. Be warned that it is one of the most difficult crosswords out there.
Raymond Keene's chess column is one of the best there is. That also is available in full online, free.
Unusually for these days, the magazine features an original poem each week, and the standard is remarkably high.
You can get a very good idea of whether the Speccy is to your taste by visiting the website, (you have to register, but registration is free) and then you can decide whether to buy an online or print subscription.
If it seems too far to the right for you, take a look at its left-wing rival, The New Statesman. In a country where reporting is as self serving as politics, it's grand to find a publication so enriched with intelligent dialogue, insightful thinking, un-poisoned by our politics or big money interests. It's wonderful to read the POV of those with enough distance to be able to sift the insanity into meaningful discussion...not to mention the literary excellence and wit with which it is done. Intelligence and excellence are addictive, especially when it's so rare.If you live in the United States and love "The New Yorker", you will thoroughly enjoy "The Spectator". It is so refreshing to read about world events from a non-American point of view. Also you may find their humor as a completely different flavor. The Kindle really makes this possible since the print version of this magazine is exorbitantly expensive to receive in America.

Guardian - Weekly Edition
A recent issue contained news articles on a variety of topics from Syria's possible troop withdrawal from Lebanon to an account of a football game between Manchester United and Crystal Palace. The edition also included many news capsules from around the world as well as much comment and analysis on diverse subjects. Two pages were devoted to book reviews.
The quality of writing in the GUARDIAN WEEKLY is consistently high. The bias seems to be slightly to the left. I recommend it mostly because of its interesting worldview and the excellence of its reporting.

Great information when it arrives. Like a London bus some weeks you get no copy some you get two. When you ring to complain (which I have 3 times in the last 6 weeks) they have no record of your previous complaints, they blame the US post, they dont reply to requests to speak to a superior, and they wont credit you an extra copy. Basically taking no responsibility. I've had it. I'm discontinuing my subscription. There's so much you can get online why should anyone put up with old technology.Read Best Reviews of Guardian - Weekly Edition Here
I bought this subscription for my wife. After a long (but acceptable) wait the first issue finally arrived. She loved it. A week later nothing more came. Two and three weeks passed without another copy of the Guardian. I gave a call to the number on the paper and they told me that the subscription was suspended. They had no explanation why, only an apology that it was suspended and they reactivated it while I was on the phone. Then they told me that the subscription would expire in 8 months. When I asked why so soon they said the subscription was marked for 45 weeks but at the same time they could see that it was a year long subscription! Again no explanation could be offered. But this time they had to send it up the food chain before it could be resolved. They didn't even ask for a contact number or email address to let me know when the problem was resolved. I had to ask for that too!I game them two stars because we love the content of the paper. But you'd better be aggressive in managing your subscription because these guys seem to have their heads up their a@$#s.I wish every intelligent person in the US would read this newspaper. We devour it, savor it. It gives us news we never hear about in American newspapers. It probably gives fits to conservative right-wingers--all the more reason to read it.

Games World of Puzzles
Over my year-long subscription I accumulated a backlog of unread issues and eventually decided to cancel my 'World Of Puzzles' subscription. I'm saving the unused issues for future use. Single issues are highly recommended for airport bookstores and long airplane or train travel.
Amazon's annual rate is currently about $3.50 less than that directly offered by the publishers (each issue is loaded with subscription cards). However, be advised that subscribing through Amazon takes a LONG time to start (Amazon currently estimates 3-4 months between payment and first issue). This magazine is on the pricey side, but it is packed full of really clever puzzles -of all kinds. There are the staples: crosswords, paint by numbers, cryptoquotes, battleships -but also all kinds of original, unique puzzles as well. You get what you pay for with this magazine. It keeps me entertained for many days (and nights). I save the old ones and go back to find a little nugget of a puzzle that I hadn't finished when I first looked at it. Great magazine -so glad it is on the market.

I have tried the basic crossword and logic puzzle magazines out there, the kind you get at the airport and so on (usually by Penny Press), and the Games Magazine publications, World of Puzzles in particular, are by far the best. The simple physical quality of them is better, the puzzles more interesting and just overall a better buy. I admit I have never finished all the puzzles in it, but it's also great because I can keep them a while and still find puzzles to do! If you do a lot of puzzles, get a subscription. If you're more limited on time and never finish as many of them as you like, you can generally find this at places like Borders and buy every other edition. For those who love puzzles, Games and World of Games magazines are the ultimate in fun and variety. The crosswords are unique and include different varieties of wordplay. The sudoku has challenging designs, the picture logic I have not seen anywhere else, and the cryptic crosswords are amazing. There is a bit of everything for every kind of puzzle fan, but my personal favorite is Mixed Doubles which is a crossword play on homonyms. I have subscribed to this magazine for years and enjoy each fresh new edition.I really enjoy the magazine. However, it did take a bit longer to get the first issue than I anticipated.Thursday, December 5, 2013
Ifr Refresher
It's a good supplement an intense pilot will use to maintain his or her IFR awareness.Without a doubt it's the best pilot reading I do every month, cover to cover. Many articles are challenging enough in technical content to merit reading it twice. More constructive than NTSB Reporter. Much less expensive than an hour of flight. Any single article could save your life. Buy the back issues. Buy a 3 ring binder. Buy a gift subscription. The Mar & Apr 2010 issues have been a real disappointment both in length (only 16 pages) and content. I expected more quality content with useful practical information based on editor Rick Durden's columns on . Basically, I wouldn't recommend this publication to anyone with much instrument experience. I was hoping that it would be a useful source of "enrichment" material to use in my instrument ground schools, but alas, there has been little really useful for that either. Use the $59 to buy a copy of the FAA Instrument Procedures Handbook (FAA-H-8261-1 and ISBN 9781560275510) and a copy of Peter Dogan's Instrument Flight Training Manual (ISBN 0916413268)
