Modern Dog

Modern DogA stylish and witty addition to the underpopulated dog magazine scene, Modern Dog is a finely crafted and informative quarterly.

Its foundation is geared for the purebred (that is to say unrepentant) dog lover, and from that springs articles on dog art and illustrators, living arrangements with dogs, high fashion and style, book reviews and recipes. In short, the assumption is that anyone interested in dogs is an interesting person with a need to be visually and intellectually stimulated.

What a arch magazine this is. How clever to pair an article on summer wines with appropriate recipes ... and illustrate the same with a dog in a straw sombrero ready to party.

And if there's a trend in human fashion to be explored, that trip is going to be taken with a dog in tow. The photography and styling in this magazine is inspired, doggy and fun. Plus, there is ART to behold. Articles on accomplished illustrators, outsider and funky art. The art blends in with dog stories and book reviews, which leads into articles on travelling with dogs.

A good read, a good sit to be taken with your favorite dog in your favorite chair. Or, if you're dog-deprived, a good way to lessen the pain.

Modern Dog is a magazine worth reading.

My new favourite magazine! Beautiful photos, smart and entertaining articles, fashion, art, exclusive celebrity interviews... all with a dog focus! Cover models range from Paris Hilton and Tinkerbell to Virginia Madsen and her dogs. Thanks to Modern Dog I now know how to throw a dog-friendly cocktail party (complete with hors d'oeuvres for both twoand four-legged guests) AND actually get my dog to come when she's called. Definitely worth checking out.

Modern Dog magazine is especially perfect for those who own small dogs and/or live in urban areas. The magazine is well-written, full of timely articles, and includes ads from unique merchants. I have a Lab and two Boston Terriers so I feel that I am included in their target audience; however, this magazine does include something for everyone who has a dog and wants the best for it, even if it isn't a smaller dog. I like how edgy the magazine is and this is why I think it's more tailored for urban dwellers.

If you are a dog parent (and not a parent of a child) this is a MUST! This magazine will allow you to keep up on all the fun & exciting outfits and products offered for your fabulous fur baby! If you are a modern dog parent you'll want to subscribe to Modern Dog. Like any good parent magazine you'll find information needed to care for your fido! The magazine will keep you up to date on modern trends and happening places. Of course, if you're not a true dog parent and have children, you will still love the magazine!!! Enjoy!

I've not subscribed to a pet magazine since middle school when I couldn't get enough of Cat Fancy and the pictures of all the adorable, fluffy kitties. Now, content is more important than pictures, and Modern Dog delivers. I read every issue cover to cover and have yet to recycle one because they are so full of information. Everything from food to training to breed quirks to pet friendly businesses are covered. The product reviews are thorough and cover a wide variety (and price range) of products. The holiday 2010 issue had several pages of gift ideas, and I was surprised that so many items shown were actually affordable. Many times pet magazines showcase items that are out of almost every income bracket are listed, so this was a refreshing change.

Dog owners will get a lot out of this magazine health information, adoption stories, training tips, travel tips, nutrition, caring for senior dogs, products, shopping resources it's all there. A subscription would made a wonderful gift for any dog lover.

Western Art Collector

Western Art CollectorThis is a wonderful publication. The art featured is first rate. The text is well written and the color spreads are great. if you like a traditional to contemporary approach to painting I strongly recommend this magazine. If you paint you will find Western Art Collector is just what you need to kick-start your creative juices if you are in a slump. This magazine and its 'sister' publication American Art Collector prove that art is being created that will fill you with beauty, joy and hope. No dead sharks or the typical Art Forum 'artsy' work in these pages!

This magazine is a gem! One of the best out there for anyone interested in art, involving all things, places, and people from a western perspective. You don't even have to be a collector; you only need to be curious, and appreciate and enjoy western art, as this magazine shows the best there is on the market. Highly educational as well: you learn a lot about this genre of art.

Combat Handguns

Combat Handguns_Combat Handguns_ fits somewhere in the middle of the quality stack of firearms publications available on most newsstands. These are my criticisms:

It's a monthly publication with a decent glossy print. Many pages are color, but the grey scale images are still quite good. Issues are about 100 pages long, enough for a quick read, but not enough to fully satisfy me as an inquisitive reader. The entire copy can be read thoroughly in 30 minutes.

A subscription is not expensive, but it's still not exactly a bargain. I shelled out $24 through Amazon.

Articles cover a range of items available for purchase, such as handguns, knives, holsters, and ammunition. This information is no different from that of every other firearms magazine on the newsstand, save that it often is not complete enough. Usually, a product article will forego telling the price of an item, which is unacceptable for such a venue; an estimated price should be given for each and every item (or an explanation of why the price wasn't printed should be given). Of the 7 handguns reviewed in the September 2006 issue, three were missing price information. Ugh.

Often, product articles are ended abruptly by the authors. Did the editor chop out essential information, or did the writer dash out the article at the last moment? The articles often have the same feeling that my composition students' papers have, the rushed conclusion of the simple-minded: in the Sept. 2006 issue, on another 1911 clone, "It's a workman-like gun that does a working job" (25). Again, UGH. This is, in product pieces, the equivalent of "And they lived happily ever after."

Articles are almost always chopped up and continued in the rear portion of the magazine. Often, there is absolutely no purpose to the " continued on page..." It's absolutely irritating and antithetical to continuity, especially since many articles are not much longer than a single page (with one-third covered by ads).

Although it is titled "Combat Handguns," some handguns covered are not adequate for any sort of combat save the combat against a paper target at close range. Sometimes, .22 pistols are reviewed or featured in photos in the various technique articles, which is irresponsible as advice and further support for the anti-gunner belief that people who enjoy shooting want to carry a gun in every pocket.

The quality of writing is barely adequate. As a composition professor, I'd grade most articles C-, as there **will be** several misspelled words or incomplete sentences. Again, this indicates a dashed-out drafting process, with little proofreading (isn't that part of an editor's job? Does anyone read the finished articles before they go to press?). Another UGH, big time.

Cover enticers, such as "2-Against-1 Shootout: Someone's Breaking into the House," are usually all-show, no-go. This particular article in the Tactics section gives a basic diagram for setting up an IPSC pistol course. There's no story to it; it's a made-up, alarmist piece about an unlikely practice event that "the armed professional" (i.e., law enforcement officer) doesn't need a magazine to supply, but the anti-gunner looking at the cover at the grocery-store newsstand will think that the magazine is a bloodthirsty training device for the next wacko. There are better ways to present the content, editors.

The "It Happened to Me" column will have two or three stories submitted by readers, but, sometimes, these stories get recycled from previous issues, and they're always far too decontextualized. Where and when did the event happen? Did it even happen? Who ARE these people? Where is the fact checking? The Sept. 2006 issue's column has GY from Iowa writing about he gunned down two men that tried to rob him as he was fishing: "Not bad and still 2 rounds left" (6). Idiocy! I like true crime stories like the next guy, but not this yokel-justice gloating. I want names of people and places and dates supplied, if only to confirm that the stories aren't 30 years old and patchworked with urban myth. Instead, gun owners get lumped together with bumbling morons who are quick to draw and, sometimes, over-anxious to get some "trigger time."

The "Street Smarts" column gives advice that should be common sense, and it's not really very enlightening. The Sept. 2006 issue has "What Cops Know: The Key to Alertness It's the Condition Yellow Habit!" (why, why do there have to be so many exclamation points?), beginning on p. 32 and continued on p. 72 (UGH), with the key message that being alert is good but is a skill that must be practiced and can't be taught. It's just a habit. Hmmm...sounds like a big waste of ink to me. This column also is frequently recycled under the guise of "tribute" or "classic" articles.

Frankly, I doubt that "armed professionals" are reading this magazine seriously. There are columns on "Cop Talk" or "VIP Protection," but they don't provide much insight into those professions. It's a good magazine for a quick read about product availability, but, mostly, it has a "springboard" function, piquing interest and forcing the reader to turn to other sources for more complete information.

This is my favorite gun magazine. I've subscribed to guns and ammo, shooting times, rifle shooter, etc.

If you carry or are considering it, it is a wealth of info... real-life legal issues by Massad Ayoob, "I was there" experiences from those who carry, suggested training exercises, even body guard training and scenarios. Columnists respond to questions in letters to the editor.

There are also gun reviews, a section on holsters and new stuff on the gun market.

So, if you carry, or are interested in considering it, this is a great magazine.

Buy Combat Handguns Now

While holding promise, Combat Handguns ultimately falls short, serving a very narrow audience. The magazine focuses almost exclusively on the 45-caliber weapon and every possible incarnation it could conceivably have. If you are interested obtaining information about any other caliber and how it pertains to your self-defense needs, you will find almost no information whatsoever. Its content seems to consist largely of slick color advertisements from a wide variety of manufacturers. It does have some informative legal and self-defense articles, but these are often packaged in the most inflammatory manner possible with titles like, `It's A Three on One Showdown, AND THEY'VE GOT YOUR WIFE!!!' If your looking for a gun magazine that focuses on the handgun try Guns and Ammo's Handgun magazine, it is far more balanced. Unless you're into 45's and kidnapped wives, then this is your magazine.

Read Best Reviews of Combat Handguns Here

Reality check...all gun magazines are full of adds and have reviews that are never critical. This is a sad reality, but it is the truth. What sets Combat Handguns apart from the rest of them is the amount of information given. When you read about a firearm in this magazine, it will tell you the size of the groups it shot, with what ammo it shot it, how much it cost, muzzle velocity, and other useful information that many other gun magazines leave out.

Also, this magazine has a section called "It happened to me", which is similar to "The armed citizen" in NRA mags. This by far is my favorite section of this magazine. It's the first place I turn to when I open it up! I've read everything from G&A to Pocket Pistols and no other magazine comes close in my opinion.

Want Combat Handguns Discount?

I don't write a lot of reviews on Amazon, but after reading another review, I really felt it necessary to post this. I've been a subscriber to this magazine for years, and yes, the magazine does cover the .45 as well as 9MM, .380 ACP, .25, .40 S&W, .38, .357 and a host of others. Yes, they do have articles titled "It's A Three on One Showdown, AND THEY'VE GOT YOUR WIFE!!!" That's the focus of this magazine, which is exactly what the names implies COMBAT HANDGUNS. Guns and Ammo is a great magazine, and they have great supplements, but it's a different niche in the market. Combat Handguns is targeted (pun intended) to the person who is interested in the use of the handgun for self defense, or for the person who carries a handgun for their profession. They have articles that address the concealed carry of the handgun for those legally authorized to do so. They also address training drills, new product reviews, as well as the legal implications of defending yourself, or your loved ones, with a handgun. They provide great insight into what to do, as well as what NOT to do, should you ever have to use your handgun in self defense and they reinforce it through real world examples of both. They have several columns and articles written by the "Legends" of combat handgun training Massad Ayoob, John Farnham, Jeff Cooper, Chuck Taylor, etc.

As a Combat Handguns subscriber, and a firearms owner for 30 years, I can highly recommend this magazine if you're looking for straight information covering all areas of the defensive use of the handgun, written by experts in their fields.

Mother Jones (1-year auto-renewal)

Mother JonesNot too many newsstands carry this magazine, so it is well worth having a subscription. Most of today's magazines are published by large conglomerates (such as AOL-Time-Warner), just the type of organizations that would NEVER say a bad word against a government that supports them in every way.

THIS is a magazine for the people...not afraid to tell it like it is...to uncover dirty politics (be it Republican or Democrat) or corrupt business. If more people would read this magazine, more people would be outraged at what's going on, and perhaps things would start heading in the right direction.

But this magazine isn't just politics. They have great articles on music, books, etc., as well.

This is no Time or Newsweek, kissing up to the politicians and big business that have this nation in such an awful mess. This is reality. Subscribe today.

Unlike TIME or Newsweek Mother Jones magazine is willing to take on the big corporations and the sacred cows of government. It has been a publication we have read for decades and is fair. Liberal for sure, but also fair. They took on politicians who were in the corner with the tobacco companies. People like then California Speaker and now San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. They have exposed the hypocrites who fight porn and the hypocrites within organized religion. They have been on the front lines on racial and ethnic issues long before the average "news" magazines gave a damn.

I'm starting to think I'm going to have to get a subscription to MoJo -it's getting harder and harder to find here in Canada. This is one of the most progressive magazines around. It is a well written, hard hitting magazine that covers politics from a progressive viewpoint. I like having access to something that contradicts the pro-business/capitalism point of view that dominates in the North American media. The quality of the writing and the photography is high, and the articles are timely and topical enough that they can lead to great conversations with guests. If you're all at open to reading a socialist/left wing viewpoint on national and international issues, this magazine is one you'll want to read.

With regret, the word "liberal" is a dirty one these days. And in an era where the criminal often gets more rights than the victim, and the unborn get no rights at all, it's easy to see how the good-intentioned get demonized.

This magazine highlights what I believe are the good, RIGHT-minded LIBERALS. The kind that hate government corruption and seek to expose it. The kind that care about clean air, and the kind who hate what corporations are doing to wreck the environment. The kind who love peace and hate war. These are the people I happily and readily identify with.

Get this magazine; you'll be in good company. According to the amazon.com site, people who subscribe to Mother Jones are also getting Atlantic Monthly and Harpers. This trio of magazines really is the cream of the crop (or at least a portion of it).

It's nice to see great investigative journalist at its purist, just a non-profit magazine fighting the good fight without coming off as conspiracy-theorist quacks or foaming-at-the-mouth fanatics. One star deducted because it comes out just six times a year--that's a long time to wait for a magazine, especially a quality one.

I've subscribed to all sorts of magazines over the years including fashion, art, home decor, parenting and even a dog magazine. This is by far the best magazine out there. After I'm done reading it I feel like it was time well spent. Full of excellent writing and information.

HOWEVER, ever since I got a subscription I started receiving TONS of junk mail from all sorts of organizations like the Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, Amnesty International, Greenpeace, other political magazines, and now with the presidential race coming up, political candidates! It's endless. Not a week goes by that I don't receive some sort of solicitation. If Mother Jones is going to sell my name and address to so many organizations then I think my subscription should be free (that's why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars)!

Catholic Family News

Catholic Family NewsThis Catholic newspaper is generally very good month in and month out. It carries a mixture of news, pious stories of the lives of the saints, Well documented scholarly articles, and an encycilical or papal letter from one of the popes in the last 1500 years or so usually round out the issue. This publication is an excellent way to help people of whatever background learn the Catholic Faith better.

This Catholic newspaper is an excellent source for pre-1960's great writings from the Church Fathers, Doctors of the Church, great Catholic writers, articles, papal encyclicals, and catechisms, from the year 100 to 1959. I say pre-1960's because since about that time, MANY Catholic writings have been corrupted and or tinged with hidden or open errors, which a Catholic that is not learned in what the Church taught for 1900 years will not discern. This publication is an educational tool to help those people of whatever background learn the Catholic Faith as it has always been. ST. VINCENT OF LERINS (400-450 A.D.)

"What then should a Catholic do ... if some new contagion

were to try to poison no longer a small part of the Church, but all of

the Church at the same time, then he will take the greatest care to

attach himself to antiquity which, obviously, can no longer be seduced

by any lying novelty." (Commonitorium)

John Venarri is a freemason who has infiltrated the tradionalist movement. For the sole purpose to divide us. Think of this, a bishop said, ;We must abrogat Vatican 11. And then immediatly abrogate the council of Trent. Our lord said to Peter ;He who hears you, hears me, he who rejects you rejects me;.

This magazine, while presumably well-intentioned, is a veritable font of misinformation to Catholics, especially traditional Catholics who are disturbed by the events in the Church since Vatican II. Unfortuantely, CFN sets Vatican II up as a "straw man"; the writers caricature the Council in the terms that many liberals would indeed have us believe, and then knock it down by saying it was not a valid Council. While it is quite unfortunate that many liberal Catholics have (deliberately or not) twisted the meanings of Vatican II, the Council IS valid. To believe otherwise is heresy. Many ads in this magazine are from schismatic groups such as SSPX, or sedevacantist groups like MICM. (It is not logical to say that the current Pope has no authority, and then to refer to Saint ("Padre") Pio as such when it is the current Pope who canonized him. This is done in the Sep. 2003 issue.) Please avoid this magazine, and seek out good Catholic media like EWTN (which is free).

National Geographic Traveler

National Geographic TravelerI have subscribed to National Geographic Traveler for almost a year and find it fairly enjoyable. The destinations are good, the photos are good and the articles are good. But also nothing to knock your socks off.

Why only four stars and not five? The magazine doesn't wow me very often and I have found that most of the articles focus on white bread middle to upper class Americans. I am not the sort of traveler who is going to be staying in $350 a night room when I go to Bali. The do have budget conscious or "nitty gritty" tours/hotels/destinations etc but there are fewer of those than luxury tours/hotels/destinations.

They also occasionally focus on trips that are a bit too exotic and remote. What are the odds that I will decide to scale K2, Kayak 28 days in the Arctic Circle or run a marathon in the Sahara Desert? The articles are okay to read but not in depth enough to be educational nor practical enough to go to. They do nothing but peak your curiosity a tad and then you move on.

So for me the magazine is only a 4 out of five stars. Will I renew my subscription, yes. Its a good magazine, but if your looking for something with just as good destinations, articles and photos with a bit less posh and unattainable, scope out the aptly names Budget Travel. If you have the money to burn when you travel and enjoy reading about other peoples extreme adventures this magazine will be perfect.

I dropped my subscription to National Geographic Traveler after two years. The only really good thing about the magazine was the photography of the places covered--what you would expect from a National Geographic magazine. The articles and reviews in the magazines were generally useless for me as a middle-class traveler. I travel quite a bit overseas, but cannot afford most of the places NG Traveler covers. If you can afford the $300-$500 rooms at the places NG Traveler recommends, then subscribe. But if you are the average traveler on a budget, skip this magazine.

This is a great magazine for the dreaming traveler. Unless you have quite a bit of money, this may be as close as you get to some of these places, but que sera, sera. The photos are of National Geographics usual great quality, and every now and then you'll find something close enough to home to actually see.

This is a better than average travel magazine. Good mix of practical type stuff, budget travel ideas, and sort of 'dream trips.' I've read Frommer's Budget Travel in the past, and I like this one somewhat better than that. It is way better than the prestige publications like Travel + Leisure or Conde Nast Traveler, which cater seemingly only to the super rich.

Cigar Aficionado (1-year auto-renewal)

Cigar AficionadoOnce upon a time, this was one of my favorite magazines. The reason was simple. I love cigars and this was a magazine primarily about cigars. The cigar content now, though, seems often to be an after-thought. The serious articles of the past have given way to more and more ads and articles about watches and shirts that cost more than the gross national product of much of the world. Too much now is about frivolous celebrity culture, devoid of any cigar-related content. If I had the slightest interest in how some actor/singer/athlete lives, I would read one of those magazines. While I will still occasionally pick this up, and still do find the occasional exceptional article, I have now turned to Cigar magazine for my cigar-related content.

When this mag started, it was the perfect (cigar) man's read. Delightful mix of politics, travel, but we always got a full plate of Cigar info.

In recent years, the mag has relied more on 'puffery' and doubled the amount of ads. It's still a decent read, but hardly what it used to be, and barely worth the (discounted) subscription price. I almost gave this a 3, but the very recent issues might be showing an uptrend.

This magazine is rather interesting as it should come with a socio-economic rating because you need to have a certain amount of wealth to appreciate it. It's not for middle class guys like this reviewer as, even if I wanted to, I could never afford most of the stuff advertised in these pages. In the last issue, I read about vacation ideas which I may or may be able to afford in 30 years--provided I'm still alive. Ads for Porsches and the like are rather lost on me. It does keep its promise though as it focuses on the good life and all which this phrase encompasses. Unlike Maxim or GQ, it's short on women and big on stuff. All the accoutrements of the playboy lifestyle are on parade here. One could spend a fortune even if they took seriously only half of these suggestions. I even saw a ski jacket for $2,500; it must be nice to have that kind of disposable income. Anyway, the cigar content is thorough and interesting. I do wish that there were more articles about cigars in general as opposed to ones concerning particular brands and ratings. Overall, the quality of the features and production is excellent even though it will have limited appeal for the average person.

I-D - Levelprint

I-D - Levelprinti-D magazine is not the same I.D. magazine. the former is the magazine described on this page, a fashion magazine. the latter is short for Industrial Design magazine, which is what the misplaced product description above describes.

in 2005 it was:

my go-to fashion magazine

i-D focuses on the high fashion and its culture, particularly europe-based/ international designers.

the magazine often features interviews with top designers, executives, and misc. fashion celebrities. there are several large spreads of photography in every issue, with very clear themes and well-selected, representative pieces from fresh off the runway lines, accompanied by similarly fresh hair and make up. this is what stylists and designers read.

many large chain bookstores carry i-D, i would say it enjoys the widest circulation among its competitors (V/ this is a magazine.) its non-industry readership can be compared to that of surface magazine, but i-D is very fashion focused. the subscription is not cheaper than buying individual issues, but it sells out from bookstores and newsstands regularly.

in 2010 it is:

an artifact.

the gestalt and aesthetics remain the same as it was 5 years ago. if i wanted a tasteful, popular, safe fashion opinion i'd go read Vogue. it's fashion magazine, not a National Geographic.

this is a magazine made by and read by an aging population. Mariah Carey on the cover? demoted.

youth culture has changed; fashion has changed. it's high time that it's reflected in print, because some people can't acknowledge what's happening until they are told.

printed in England.

i have read this i-D for just 1 year!

but i knew it for many years, cos i live in china, there's few foregin magazine i could bought around my city beijing.

i booked it in a import&export company.

it's really too expensive to me, it cost more than 1,000 yuan RMB.

you could read all new in this mag. new models, new fashion, new photographers etc.

the quanlity of this mag is well, paper and print are the best.

its pics are not just beautiful also can get you into a think-time, and you will won something that you feeling great.

so buy i then get the i-D's mind into your brain.
