The Writer

"The Writer" is the premier magazine for writers of all varieties. Kalmbach is known for publishing a great series of specialty periodicals, and this one is extremely well written and edited, as is appropriate for the subject matter.

The magazine is best for aspiring writers of fiction, with the clear majority of column inches. Poetry is also covered well, and nonfiction (my area of interest), while covered, is definitely in third place. In the end, though, most techniques for fiction also help nonfiction authors and vice-versa: I read every issue cover to cover regardless of area of concentration because I have gleaned some of the best tips from articles that superficially seemed not to pertain to my writing.

The magazine is very good at covering new developments in the publishing world, and features in-depth reporting on subjects like "Print on Demand" (POD) publishing. Many articles concentrate on in-depth technique implementation, while the utilitarian short pieces that cut through grammatical tedium and stylistic methodologies reinforce the basics.

If you are interested in writing as a professional or just for personal satisfaction, "The Writer" is the magazine for you.

I've been a freelance writer since 1996, and every month I look forward to reading the next issue of The Writer. It's a magazine that shows you how to write better, how to get published, and how to stay inspired. The interviews with top writers are great, and I love the reviews of books about writing. I subscribed to this thinking I'd take a break from Writer's Journal for awhile. Unfortunately, after my first Writer arrived, I found myself going back to re-subscribe to Writer's Journal as well. The Writer had a very nice, long, in-depth interview, but didn't have the technique articles Writer's Journal has. While the Writer had some contest notifications, etc, I felt Writer's Journal had more.

At this review I've only received one Writer, and it is unfair to base the entire magazine off one issue, so I am keeping my subscription for at least the next year.

There were a few things I really liked about the subscription:

1) it came right away--I didn't have to wait for 6 weeks, I think it started coming within the first month after I ordered.

2) It was a large magazine, not one with only 10 pages in it (as I have found when I've ordered magazines via the n et without holding a bound paper copy first).

3) It didn't seem to have the number of advertisements that Writer's Journal is full of.

I subscribed to this magazine thinking it would be a good way to keep up with the trends and improve my writing. I found it a bit scary, actually. Most articles are reduced to lists, with few new or in-depth articles. A look at the cover reminds one so much of the cliché women's magazines that scream "10 sure-fire tips to rekindle your romance!" and "25 worst fashion mistakes revealed!"

There is some really useful information here (thus the two stars) but it's (dis)organised in text bites tailored to the attention span of the M-TV generation. This prevents the information from being comprehensive for a beginner (or relative beginner) and most of it would not be useful for anyone with more than moderate experience as a writer.

To sum up, if you are looking for comprehensive writing instruction, get a book (There are many good onesjust check the amazon reviews for which one would suit you) and if you are looking for info that will keep you abreast of what's going on, check the forums, publisher's and editor's blogs, etc... This magazine, unless it admits that it cannot compete with the internet for trendiness and puts its efforts into timeless, well-written pieces dealing with craft (good writing never goes out of style, people), is doomed for fluffy oblivion.

Maisons Normandes

It's an absolutely beautiful French magazine in French. It does not pander to any audience except those who are French, and love French country architecture of the Normandy region. Not something the average American would enjoy.

Numismatic News (1-year)

This magazine comes out once a week so you will stay up-to-date with the hobby. One of the features of this magazine is the monthly price guide. This is a supplement to the actually magazine you get. In the price guide, tons of US coin prices are listed. This price guide is a retail price guide, not wholesale.

Another one of my favorite things about the magazine is the weekly mintage page. On this page all the mintages for what the mint has made in 2005 are listed. Wondering how many silver proof sets were made? What about the Kansas state quarter? You can find the answer of all of these in the magazine.

Now to the articles. I personally find them okay. They are not bad and some are very interesting, but I would not say that they are outstanding. They do cover a diverse array of topics. A plus about the articles is they will keep you up-to-date. Was there a major auction or a large show? A record price or a major rarity discovered? You will find out when you read it.

The last thing I have to say is about the classified ads. If you are a Numismatic News subscriber, you get a free 25-word classified ad with each issue. This means you could post an ad for buying coins, trading coins, or selling coins. This is a cool little feature of the magazine.

Altogether this is an excellent weekly coin magazine. Compared to the other weekly coin magazine, Coin World, I would recommend the following. If you like the article more and do not care about the classified ads, go with Coin World. If you like the classified ads and do not care as much about the articles, go with Numismatic News. You cannot go wrong with either of the weekly publications. However, it is up to you to decide which one to subscribe to or...both?

I subscribe to this because I like the fact that it has all of the up to date info on US mint programs, machinations, mintage reports and auction gossip with results, etc. It also has a very active classifieds section and super coin dealer ads. In addition there is the obligatory spec piece on overlooked and undervalued coins/coin segments, etc. which probably don't amount to a hill of beans actually but always get one to thinking about the particular coin/coin segment highlighted in the particular article. An oddly compelling part of the magazine is the letters section where very opinionated people tend to bash each other over the course of two or three issues. It is a lively and engaging part of the magazine-newsweekly that would be sorely missed if it were ever cut out. Also there is often a guest opinion or two from some of the coin world's heavy weights and/or notables. Every other issue or so there is an insert that lists either upcoming auctions and coin shows, or a table of inflated coin values (per all coin magazine tradition). On price alone, I highly recommend this but also if you like the cult/star trek aspect of coin collecting this is certainly a must-subscribe to periodical.

T3 : Tomorrows Technology Today

If you are into all things digital, electronic, or simply wonder what magazine can help you gear up like James Bond, look no further my friend. T3 is a tad spendy on the subscription price because it is an import from the UK. This also affects readers in the US and Canadian markets because some of the products discussed aren't available in North America. However, by the same token, it allows the tech savvy to see what's shaping up overseas, and in many cases, what's on it's way to the States or Canada. Yet, due to inability to customize for the West (a large percent of it's profitable market) I give it a 4 instead of a 5. A sugguestion to those interested in this mag as a gift for someone else: try looking for Sony Style Magazine. It is along the very same lines but it's Sony product specefic (Sony is the very heart of modern consumer technologies). Sony Style can save those considering a mag subscription for a tech lover some serious bucks by skipping the import fees since it is pressed domestically in the US.

T3 is a great technology magazine but it's a little heavy on the cell phone market. If you live outside of Europe some of the cell phones reviewed will never make it to your local phone carrier. I wish T3 devoted more time to actual review of products. Anyway it's still a great magazine.

On a more serious note I placed an order through Amazon for a T3 subscription roughly a year ago and it was cancelled due to the company fulfilling the magazine order did not honer one of the prices here on Amazons webpage. The woman at the fulfillment company told me that T3 had stopped being published (blatant lie).

I'm certain it was due to the current exchange rate between pounds and dollars but to be informed that the magazine was out of business was unacceptable.

"Wired" is another brand of this type of magazine but does not have a semi-naked woman on the cover every issue (hahaha). Basically inside T3 magazine you hope to find either one of three things.

#1 Something so horribly expensive that you will never own it.

#2 Something expensive that you should own.

#3 Something that is not so expensive that you should buy that month.

For instance 2005 is all about 'wireless' so 'Wired' magazine gets the sales, but when then the word 'Broadband' and 'T1' to 'T3' are used, we think this... and it is all about that.

T3 is good. Get one issue and see if that is what you need. If you like to see nice takes on cool stuff, T3 does it in aces. It is not deep reading.

It is a cutting edge magazine. Let's you know the top tech devices and informs you about what is modern in technology these days. Anyway it is all about the product and I am sure T3 is more about giving you ideas that month than chasing down the top stuff through trial and error. Just try it.

Donna Hay Magazine

I first started reading Donna Hay during a visit to Australia and I have been hooked since. It is a fabulous magazine that presents good quality ingredients in fresh and simple recipes. Fantastic plating, beautiful pictures, and lots of good practical knowledge.

However, the price Amazon is currently charging for a subscription, US$96.70, is too much. An international subscription, purchased direct from Australia is AU$96. The US dollar is not 1:1 with the Australian dollar (yet), so why does it actually cost more through Amazon? A year ago, the subscription was about US$34 from Amazon.

I've subscribed to Gourmet, Bon Appetite, even Taste Of Home. What I like about Donna Hay's magazine is that every recipe I liked had a wonderful photo (I'm very visual) and easy to follow directions. It's also not cluttered with a lot of "wine tasting in the valley" type of info or gourmet reviews of things I'll never cook. These mags are keepers and you could even mat/frame some of the photos for your kitchen wall. Remember though, the subscription is for 6 issues a year, not 12. Great gift for that cook you just are out of ideas for!

I am a veteran food professional and food stylist and believe that this is the best food magazine published in the world today. The photography is superior to all others so much so that Donna Hay has created her own iconic style that others try to emulate. I know, since I've worked for several of the top US cooking magazines where the editors bring issues of Donna to photo shoots for inspiration. This is a magazine for foodies. So don't expect decorating and craft ideas unless, of course, it's related to food.

As for other reviews regarding subscription price and the long wait to receive your first issue:

1. This magazine is published in Australia so you have to consider the additional shipping costs that are added to the annual subscription price. Exchange rates also play a part in the price. The Amazon price is actually quite a bargain when you consider individual copies sell for $18.99 at Barnes & Noble!

2. The subscription is for 6 issues. Each of these issues is the same quality as a high end cookbook with 100+ recipes per issue. This is the only food magazine that is worth collecting and you will never want to part with one once you see the gorgeous food photography.

3. Yes, there is a long wait to receive the first issue. A month or two longer than a domestic magazine. Remember, the magazine is only published every 2 months and then it is shipped half way around the world. That is going to take some time...but it is so worth the wait!

Donna has a way to inspire professionals and home cooks alike to never compromise on fresh, seasonal ingredients and to relish the fact that good food can be simple to prepare.

Buddhism Today

First, let me say that I'm encouraged that Buddhism has a magazine dedicated to its study, and that the magazine is low in ads. I greatly appreciate the effort involved in creating this.

My concern with the issue of Buddhism Today I read through (Fall-Winter 2009) came right away on page 5. I had in my hands "part 2" of the 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas. I am generally bothered by magazines that provide multi-part content. Imagine the scene. I am sitting down with a nice cup of tea, preparing to relax with wonderful content, and I start reading "We have now completed the preliminaries, the seven mind trainings." Wait we did? What preliminaries? Right from the start I get the sense that I've missed out, that it would be fruitless to even try reading this article and "catch up". It's not a good feeling to get at the very beginning of a magazine you were looking forward to reading.

Still, I begin reading the article. The "first" entry in here is the Eighth Verse. I am told that "The teaching of this verse is for practitioners of the lowest category" but I have no idea what the lowest category means. Is that me? Is it practitioners who have been "acting inappropriately" until now? Subsequent verses also refer to things I am unsure of. Maybe it was explained in the previous issue, which I do not have.

Well, OK. On to the next article. This one is "What Happened in Kalimpong?" The intro to the article says "Here I offer a new awareness, beyond the reflections published earlier (1)." The (1) apparently refers to a journal he published in 2008 that has the base story. So now not only do I need to get the previous issue of this magazine, but I also have to get this book as well in order to understand the current issue.

We do then get to self contained articles with interesting content and lovely photos. I like that the image on page 28 is of a dark skinned woman, showing that all people of all backgrounds can enjoy Buddhism. I enjoy the writing style, and the layout is lovely. But the magazine is only 45 pages long and if you take out the table of contents and other similar pages, there isn't that much left which was able to be read as is.

If they really couldn't afford to put the entire Bodhisattva article in one issue for some reason, I would at least have done a substantial effort at summarizing the entire first article so that newcomers didn't feel quite as lost.

It makes me hesitant to pick up any future issues. Which is a shame, because the other articles were enjoyable.

Best magazine available of its kind. The articles are very insightful and really helpful. I have nearly all of the issues, and they just keep getting better and better. A full set is like having a library about Buddhism.

This is an excellent resource for Buddhist teachings, mostly within the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism but also accessible to anyone who simply has an interest in Buddhism in today's world. Very nicely done.

Bicycle Times

Most bicycle magazines seem to be only for racers, bike geeks, or people who have $5000 to spend on a bike. This magazine is for people who just ride bikes. There are plenty of bikes reviewed in this magazine that cost less than $1000. Sometimes the stories are kind of dorky, and some of the people are kind of geeky, and whenever anything political is discussed, it is obvious that the publisher has a liberal lean; but as a conservative myself, that doesn't really bother me and this is the only bicycle magazine I buy any longer. All the other magazines have seemed to forgotten that not everyone is interested in racing or wearing funny-looking bicycle clothes when they ride or spending a fortune on a bicycle. This magazine is more in tune to those who just want a decent, affordable bicycle to ride to work or to go pick up some groceries, or to just have a little fun with. The magazine also covers cargo bikes, single speed bikes, fold-able bikes, and other bikes that most other magazines ignore. And because of that, this magazine is just more interesting to me because it does not have such a narrow focus of what bicycling is all about.

Like all magazines, some issues are better than others, so read a few to see if you like it. I have had some issues that I would rate as not very good, but others that are great, and most that are really pretty good. So overall, I consider this a magazine I am willing to buy a subscription to.

Great stories, pictures, and voice for cycling advocacy. Gets into touring, and commuting, covers bicycling for those of us who aren't into spandex.

Grit - National Edition

Grit is one of my favorite bimonthly country living magazines. It's a magazine that celebrates the rural community. There are always a wonderful variety of articles. Just some of the article subjects are on gardening, fruit growing, food preservation, farm lifestyle, tips on farming & animal caretaking, cooking and short stories. One of my favorite sections of Grit is the 'Looking For...' section, where readers send in requests looking for pen pals, patterns, food recipes or anything else they are looking for. The advertisements don't swamp out the features, so that's a plus as well.

I love Grit and I'd recommend it to anyone.

With so much trash out there these days, it's refreshing to read "Grit" magazine. It has down home country articles... for example: articles about firewood, farm animals, farm equipment articles,uplifting stories.
