Working Mother (1-year auto-renewal)

Working MotherI would hoping this magazine would be something helpful to us "average" working mothers (read: not high-ups in a big corporation). I would love to read articles on time management, handling guilt, finding a good daycare, etc. Instead, this magazine prints lots of articles on what other companies are doing that's great for working moms (good for them, what does that help me?) and profiles women who make 6-figure salaries while raising kids. I'm sure there's a target audience out there who like this magazine, but it sure isn't me. Let me emphasize, too, that I'm not the mom who hates her job but works to put food on the table. I like my job and choose to work, but I just don't find this magazine helpful or interesting at all. Highly disappointing.

I bought Working Mother thinking that it would be filled with great tips on time management, recipes for food kids will actually eat (and don't take all day to prepare) and fashion tips for people who shop at JCPenney, not Banana Republic or Bloomingdales. This wasn't the magazine for that. It might be great for high-end moms who make $100k and have nannies but it seems to be oblivious to other working mom needs.

I've read the past 6 or 7 issues of this magazine because they subscribe to it at the office where I work. It's definitely not worth paying for.

They LOVE to highlight corporations who are helping working mothers and it often comes across as just free publicity for these companies. It's great that these companies are supporting working women, but not all of us working moms work there, so what's the point?

They also spend time each magazine highlighting certain working moms, but personally, I've never been able to relate to the women they highlight. Another reviewer commented that it's women making 6 figures, and I highly doubt that's the average American working mom. I guess this magazine is targeted to a specific type of audience, that just doesn't include me.

Skip this one and stick with the other parenting magazines for more useful info. This one just doesn't have all that much for the average working mom.

This magazine doesn't have anything useful for the majority of working mothers. Whether you're working for minimum wage, or you're in a professional field, it doesn't matter, this magazine is not aimed at you. If you're not the CEO of Kraft Foods, I wouldn't recommend this magazine to you.

The first few I got, I flipped through in less than 15 minutes. There wasn't much that interested me. It's geared toward high-paid executives. There was a lot of profiles of moms that didn't help me at all. Even though I got this magazine at a discount, I wish I hadn't have wasted my money. I now flip through in less than a few minutes and then trash it.

People (3-month auto-renewal)

PeopleI've been reading People Magazine since the early 80s, so I know I'm not in the demographic they're aiming at any more. It's turned into LOTS and LOTS of reality TV coverage of non-actors, along with very young new actors and musicians, with very limited coverage of established actors. It seems to me they cover a smaller range of people than they used to. I'm telling myself that I"m not going to renew my subscription, but I'm still reading every issue, just skipping the articles about people from shows I would never watch. Their reviews of books and movies are perhaps worth the price of the magazine, and aren't available on their website.

If you're interested in reality TV and very young actors and pop musicians, you'll love this mag.

I ordered this subscription on 11/24/08 and the first issue arrived about two weeks ago, almost even before I expected it to. It has been arriving on the same day every week, so I am not left wondering when it will come. I was worried about ordering a subscribtion online, but it it went very smoothly! I would order other subscribtions in the future!

Not only was the price the cheapest I was able find anywhere, the first copy of the magazine, which was supposed to start in six to eight weeks, came only four weeks from my order date. What a deal!

I subscribed for a year at one hundred bucks. My mother-in-law and I both enjoyed reading it but, to be blunt, we didn't get that much enjoyment to warrant the price tag. By contrast, we adore VANITY FAIR and can't imagine life without it. I spend a lot of time on my computer and I am always plugged into the internet. I have also set up igoogle pages where just about every source on the planet has a gadget and listed items. I have an entire page devoted to entertainment and another entire page devoted to news. There is not much that I don't get right away through all the sources I have put on those igoogle pages. This made PEOPLE superfluous. If I'd been offered this magazine on a renewal for let's say a quarter of what the subscription costs, I might have taken the renewal. With the internet, however, gossip comes a lot cheaper than this.

All-aboard!

The train leaves the station at 5:40, and pulls up to my stop around 6:30. I can get through most of "People Magazine" by then. So can you.

Not difficult reading, and don't expect to learn anything important. "People Magazine" is not meant to teach you anything.

Kick back, pull out your monthly train pass, set down your bags and flip through a few pages. Learn about the latest goings on of the rich and famous. See the costumes of Hollywood, and the cars they all drive.

And when you are done, leave on the seat for the next guy. He's had a long day too.

I fully recommend "People," but only if you don't expect it to be "The New York Times."

Maisons Normandes

Maisons NormandesIt's an absolutely beautiful French magazine in French. It does not pander to any audience except those who are French, and love French country architecture of the Normandy region. Not something the average American would enjoy.

Bimmer

BimmerThis is a great magazine for BMW owners. Unlike most of the other magazines on BMW's, which are often published from the UK, this one is printed in the USA and covers a wide range of topics each month on new and older models. One highlight for US owners is that the magazine is full of ads and websites to buy parts and performance upgrades. A quick glance through this magazine and in about 20 minutes I was able to find some parts for my 1987 535is, and at a significant discount!

Typically the articles, photos and tips cover the wide range of models from the 70's, 80's, 90's up through the most recent offerings. While the editorial staff has often been accused of being too biased in favor of the marquee, what would you expect from a BMW magazine? If you are an owner or fan of these "ultimate driving machines" then this publication should be part of your monthly reading.

I was contemplating not renewing my subscription after 1 year...but I could not imagine not getting this very insightful look at BMW cars. I love that they look back on previous BMWs that have been restored or kept in great condition. Anytime there is any kind of Alpina I begin to drool, awesome photography and one of the best features of the zine is the Marketplace watch. If you have a BMW you owe it to yourself to own this magazine!

I do not and have not ever owned a BMW, but this is possibly the best magazine ever. I learn many things every issue. It really is a great read. Too bad it is not monthly. If you are interested in buying a BMW (car) then don't waste any more time, buy this magazine.

It's not that there is anything wrong with this magazine but it just isn't as great as more mainstream car magazines.

Dirt Rag Magazine

Dirt Rag MagazineDirt Rag is the real mountain biking magazine. It's not as flashy as the others, but for me, mountain biking is not about flash. It's not all about racing and corporations. It's about people and riding. And so is Dirt Rag.

Dirt Rag is the magazine for the real mountain biking enthusiast. Written by and for the rider, Dirt Rag is the insiders look at this very popular sport. Dirt Rag brings the readers what they want: where the great rides are, the hottest new products, how-to tips and much more.

Buy Dirt Rag Magazine Now

I read it for a year and found it to be mediocre. Why? 1) I didn't read one critical gear review. THey seem to just be "buffing the knob" of the company that sent them free stuff to test. 2) They have a thing for stories, either written by readers or staff, that are somewhat related to riding a bike. I'd buy a fictional book about biking if that's really what I was looking for. 3) Beer reviews!? I didn't buy a beer magazine, I bought a bike mag so why would this be relevant? Why not start putting ice cream reviews there, because everyone knows that people who ride bikes also LOVE ice cream...4) Saving on paying models by asking staff writers to model clothes/gear. Often it doesn't matter, but Karen-what's-her-name and the pink haired guy should be left out of the pick. Using models with generally good looks allows you not not be distracted when looking objectively at a product.

Look for Bike Mag or Mountain Bike Action for a mag that is less counter culture attitude, more bike magazine!

Dirt Rag is the definitive cycling magazine, whether you ride a few miles each month or dozens of miles a day. The staff is as committed to cyclists, cycling products and cycling trends as anyone; you will not find an editorial staff more committed or passionate about cycling.

From original fiction to technology reviews to simple columns that celebrate the elements that make cycling the wonderful activity it is, Dirt Rag has long served as a must-read.

As for purchases from the company, I've never encountered any trouble (going so far as to receive personalized email messages to ensure I was happy and satisfied with the service and products I received).

If you own a mountain bike, commuter bike, uni, touring bike, snow bike, etc, why do you not already own this magazine? It is beyond awesome! Articles on pump tracks, off road unicycling, trail maintenance and advocacy, and of course, sweet trail riding. We savor and fight over this magazine when it comes in, reading it slowly to make it last 2 months. The only problem I have is this magazine's propensity to put scantily clad females on the cover and in prominent photo shoots. I can overlook that though, because this magazine is so sweet.

CatWatch (1-year auto-renewal)

CatWatchThe previous reviewer gave this publication an unfair review. I work in a "no kill" shelter and many, many people do not know about sticky tape, covered litter boxes, etc. The articles are written so everyone can read and understand them, and contain a great deal of useful information. Also, not all shelters are "kill" shelters. One just has to make a few phone calls or jump on the web to find them.

This magazine is okay, but like a previous reviewer said, it often states the obvious. It does not have very many "hard-edged" articles. It is often too "matter of fact", and too careful not to make judgments. It never makes recommendations you couldn't guess yourself, and always tells you to ask your vet before doing anything beyond common sense. Even when it cannot make recommendations without examination of the cat, it does not fully explain all of the possibilities and their consequences for your cat -it just says "see your vet". It intentionally avoids mentioning products by brand, to avoid the appearance of endorsement, even if there might be something good (or bad) to say about a particular product.

I think "Catnip" is better.

This is a very informative newsletter covering a broad range of topics having to do with cat health and welfare. The articles are well written and easy to understand, often spiced with a touch of humor. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in learning more about cats.

Excellent information contained in this publication. It is published by Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine Feline Health Center. Therefore I was recently appalled when their circulation director tried to rip me off for $24.My checking account records clearly showed that the balance had been paid several weeks prior to him pulling that stunt.

When I catch somebody trying to steal from me I'm afraid we no longer have a working relationship, and I cancelled my subscription.Really a shame, because Catwatch posts a lot of information that guardians of cats need.

Harp Column

Harp ColumnFirst of all, this is a magazine for harpists. It is a niche magazine for those interested in harp news, competitions, upcoming workshops, etc. That said, this is an excellant magazine. Good historical articles, interviews and a "classifieds" section for those who want to purchase or sell a harp. Even a small harp is a big investment (most run several thousand dollars), and the harpist owes it to him/herself to learn as much about this instrument, those who have mastered it, and the hisory.

Leica Fotografie International

Leica Fotografie InternationalIt is a great magazine featuring excellent articles and photographs. You really need to own a leica or be interested in purchasing one to appreciate the value. They are VERY EXPENSIVE (perhaps way overpriced) but they have been around a long time and pros love them. The magazine maintains the tradition.

This is a great magazine if you are a Leica fan. It has a good mix of equipment and photography.

Southwest Fly Fishing (1-year auto-renewal)

Southwest Fly Fishingthis is the only fly fishing magazine i religiously re-subscribe to. It has excellent pictures, maps and a synopsis for each featured destination. A pet peave is solved in that their featured locations always show you the proximate location with a regional map.

My brother is an avid fly fisherman and enjoys this publication. I renew it each year for his Christmas gift!

Atlanta Magazine (1-year automatic renewal)

Atlanta MagazineThis is a beautifully designed and produced magazine. Well written too, with interesting articles and features (so far in 3 issues). Particularly bearing in mind it is a magazine for one city, and not a whole region / state. I have seen good regional magazines in England but never a magazine of such quality for a single city. If you live in or near Atlanta I would say that a subscription to this magazine is a must.

I feel the magazine assumes prior knowledge. We have just moved here from the UK, and it is difficult to get orientated in Atlanta. But then again, it would become a guide book wouldn't it?

Also lot of space is taken up with restaurant reviews, compared to say culture or shopping. If you live in a Metro area and don't visit the center often, that is an awful lot of restaurants to try to sample.

2 minor personal gripes for what really is an excellent magazine.

I love the articles in this magazine. I find them to be interesting and well written. What I hate about this magazine is that it's mostly advertising. I wouldn't pay top dollar for it and wish they'd increase the amount of articles.

Fresh, smart and funny. A good mix of cool style/spa/shopping insider info and serious/substantive articles. Restaurant reviews are intelligent and well-written. Reading the Our Town section can make you an instant ATL insider.

My husband and I have lived in Atlanta for about eight years. We subscribed to Atlanta magazine shortly after moving here and recently re-subscribed after an absence of many years.

I am enjoying the magazine. I feel that the articles are well-written and relevant to my life as an Atlantan, particularly one who lives inside the perimeter. The cover stories are often very topical. For example, it was great to see an in-depth look at the mortgage crisis from a local perspective. Another recent cover story was about "Atlanta's Top Doctors," which definitely provoked some conversation in my social circle. I also appreciate the restaurant reviews. They are concise, informative, and seem aptly critical.

I don't have any major beefs with the magazine, but have noticed a few factual errors. In one issue they confused some statistics between Decatur and Unincorporated DeKalb, a common problem but one that I don't expect to see in a publication with such a large circulation.

I am glad I decided to resubscribe and will probably renew at the end of the year.

Want Atlanta Magazine (1-year automatic renewal) Discount?

I've lived in Atlanta my entire life and Atlanta Magazine still manages to show me parts of the metro area I never knew about (the magazine covers far outside the city limits). It also does a good job of remembering the city's past as well as looking towards its future. If you live in Atlanta or are just visiting the city this magazine will keep you busy.
