World War II History

This magazine is a great compliment to any historian's study of WWII. The articles are fresh and well written, and the topics covered are well researched. The format is very pleasing to the eye. You are not blasted with advertisments on evey other page. Some of the topics written about I've not seen in a number of years. If the editors keep it up, they will be around for a long time. If you are a serious historian or even a casual reader of WWII, you will enjoy this magazine.

I have greatly enjoyed reading WWII History. The articles are very detailed and easy to follow. Many articles have accompanying maps and pictures that enable the reader to clearly understand the subject matter. Several times I have read a particular article in WWII History, then read a book or watched a documentary which confirmed the accuracy and detail of the article. I am not a professional historian, but this magazine has greatly increased my knowledge of World War II. It has helped me to appreciate the profound sacrifices the World War II generation made for our country and the rest of the free world.

I don't speak a word of french,and I barely read it, but I love this magazine!!! If you love fashion, get a french dictionary,I did, this is a magazine to savor! I have every issue since Ms. Roitfeld took over and will keep them forever! The French Vogue is like the American one you remember from when you were a teenager, full of mysterious photo shoots that feature lots of smoking and nudity in odd places, and clothes that no one would wear in real life but somehow look smashing on the models. It's a fantasyland full of surprises, always something different and exciting. If you miss Vogue the way it used to be before Wintour made it a celeb rag, you'll like the French version.

I don't know how to get in touch with the Magazine Express Inc. people, but I'd have a serious lecture for them about poor delivery. I always get my magazine about a month late (yes after it's been on newstands for that long) and that's IF I recieve it at all. If you move during the middle of your subscription, you're screwed. It took months to get them to forward them correctly to my new address and in the meantime, the few I missed were just lost. When you're paying upwards of $100 for a subscription and only get 10 a year (French Vogue only produces 10 issues), but 3 are lost in the mail, you lose 30 percent or your money. Bum deal.

ESPN The Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Like a previous reviewer, I subscribed to this magazine solely for the access to ESPN Insider. Instead of paying $6.99/month for Insider, $14.99 gets me a year of ESPN Insider, along with a year of the magazine. As for the magazine itself, it's sort of a high-energy, exciting, layout-filled sports page. The tone of it is far from serious, as it is filled with jokes and sarcasm (not necessarily a bad thing.) But if you're looking for a well-written magazine with insightful articles, stick to Sports Illustrated. If you simply want a colorful magazine filled with cool sports information (and your ESPN Insider access), go ahead and get this. I did, and I look forward to renewing it in a few months. In fact, just for the ESPN Insider, I'm raising my rating from three to four stars.

I purchased this magazine solely to get cheaper access to ESPN Insider Online. The magazine is so all over the place otherwise that its hardly worth reading. Its chock full of tidbits that barely gloss over sports topics. I keep it in my bathroom and I guess its good there when I only have a few minutes to read while brushing my teeth or whatnot. Don't expect SI-type depth though, its full of ads and slick factoid type departments. Reading this magazine is like watching Sportscenter, a lot of many little things with no depth on anything. I guess its worth it for less than 60 cents an issue, but if I sat down to read this magazine cover to cover I would be done with it totally in under 15 minutes....enjoy.

I should preface my review with two facts. First, I don't pay for ESPN The Magazine, it just started showing up in my mailbox a few months back and hasn't stopped. Secondly, I love sports, so I'm interested in the material. With that said, this magazine seems to have been designed for those under the age of 14, or at the very least, individuals with attention spans equal to Robin Williams on speed. The writing is juvenile and boring while the format is clearly an attempt to mask these faults. To make up for its kiddie pool depth, the magazine is stuffed with things like countdowns, top 10 lists, odds and anything else an interns can whip up before the deadline. Bottom line, it takes 4 minutes to read the thing cover to cover, and at the end you'll wish you had that time back.

Like a puppy with large paws, ESPN The Magazine may grow up to be a large periodical. Right now I'd call it a fun-loving puppy without housetraining.

Don't get me wrong, puppies are cute. I like puppies. Everybody does.

You may not want to pay an annual subscription for a magazine that looks and acts like a puppy, though. That's your call. I wanted SI, but that venerable publication can't be had for the price of frequent flyer miles like ESPN The Magazine can. So I compromised.

By comparison with SI, ESPN The Magazine gives you a flashier, big-photo, post-modern jumble of short pieces that seems to derive from the verbal, television-friendly style of its parent. I'm not the deepest of sports fan, so I don't mind this. But if you're after the kind of in-depth analysis that SI offers, you might be disappointed by this alternative.

ESPN The Magazine is definitely a *fun* read, and if that's what you want, you'll like this. When my first issue came wrapped in a 'special promotional issue cover jacket' that presented Ricky Bobby as 'Sports Figure of the Year?', I knew instantly that this publication couldn't be all bad.

And it's not.

But it's light. It's airy. It's bubbly.

Think SI Lite. Think halfway between a comic book and USA Today. Think a puppy with big feet.

I switched to ESPN The Magazine from Sports Illustrated because I wanted an Insider membership on their website, and I figured I'd try something new. Now I am regretting it. The majority of the content is lame random facts and top ten lists. The few articles longer than a paragraph are hard to find between all the ads, and they lack substance and anything to entice the reader to keep reading. This magazine feels more like teen magazine with all the gaudy headlines and lack of any real reporting or journalism. If you want a magazine with interesting and insightful sports articles, beautiful photos, and 1/100th of the advertisements, get a subscription to sports illustrated. This magazine is lame.

CatWatch (1-year auto-renewal)

The previous reviewer gave this publication an unfair review. I work in a "no kill" shelter and many, many people do not know about sticky tape, covered litter boxes, etc. The articles are written so everyone can read and understand them, and contain a great deal of useful information. Also, not all shelters are "kill" shelters. One just has to make a few phone calls or jump on the web to find them.

This magazine is okay, but like a previous reviewer said, it often states the obvious. It does not have very many "hard-edged" articles. It is often too "matter of fact", and too careful not to make judgments. It never makes recommendations you couldn't guess yourself, and always tells you to ask your vet before doing anything beyond common sense. Even when it cannot make recommendations without examination of the cat, it does not fully explain all of the possibilities and their consequences for your cat -it just says "see your vet". It intentionally avoids mentioning products by brand, to avoid the appearance of endorsement, even if there might be something good (or bad) to say about a particular product.

I think "Catnip" is better.

I have subscribed to Cat Watch for a number of years, and would not be without it. I have found it extremely informative on issues pertaining to cat owners/lovers. Anyone who subscribes will be glad they did!

This is a very informative newsletter covering a broad range of topics having to do with cat health and welfare. The articles are well written and easy to understand, often spiced with a touch of humor. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in learning more about cats.

Excellent information contained in this publication.It is published by Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine Feline Health Center.Therefore I was recently appalled when their circulation director tried to rip me off for $24.My checking account records clearly showed that the balance had been paid several weeks prior to him pulling that stunt.

When I catch somebody trying to steal from me I'm afraid we no longer have a working relationship, and I cancelled my subscription.Really a shame, because Catwatch posts a lot of information that guardians of cats need.

Advanced Photoshop

One could argue that since it is "Advanced Photoshop", the instructions could be just cursory , but I would argue it is a poor writing. Let's admit it what most people want is to see some inspiring work and the be able to reproduce it using the instructions given. Well, it is almost impossible , the instructions are more like hints rather than step-by-step tutorials. I would stay clear of this magazine if you are a beginner or intermediate photoshop user and if you are advanced, you should be writing in the magazine not subscribing to it, right? 3 stars for some nice photo illustrations.

Just got my first issue! I haven't had the chance to read cover to cover but I did read full articles here and there and skim through the full thing. Here's what I found:

Pros:

1)Beautiful, beautiful magazine. Very visually pleasing and very nice/clear layout and very high quality printing.

2) Jam packed with info! I was not expecting there to be so much info in this magazine. From tutorials to new features and a FREE disc of resources in this issue? Brilliant!

Cons:

1) While it's jam packed with info, I feel the content has "holes" so to speak. I'd like a little more detail in the step-by-step tutorials. While I do agree that a lot is left up to the creator in any creative tutorial, I still feel like they could give a little bit more on how they achieved each step. It really is for advanced or intermediate/advanced users....I don't think beginners could get any info out of this easily. I've been using PS for almost 15 years and even I am struggling with some of what they're trying to describe.

2) The font size is TINY. I compared it to some other magazines figuring it was just me but no, noticeably smaller. Probably like an 8-10pt font throughout the mag.

3) Going hand in hand with the font size (and this is the most important issue I have with the magazine), the thumbnails in the tutorials are TINY...to the point where you can barely see the screen cap of the settings being portrayed. I understand that to pack this much info in this normal sized magazine you have to make some sacrifices..but I don't think the tutorial thumbnails should be one of those sacrifices. I would really like to SEE what they're explaining...but better than no thumbnails at all!

Overall I give it 3.5 and rounded up to 4 simply for the sheer quality of magazine. Very happy with this fist issue (#110) and cant wait to see what the next issue has in store! I do consider it a good investment for PS users...but you at least have to know the program very well to be able to get much out of this. It sure does get the creative gears turning and gives new ideas for new projects. Very happy with it and it's a great addition to my archive.

I can't quite put my finger on why UK magazines are so darn good looking. Every Advanced Photoshop issue contains layout that is exquisite, the content is awe-inspiring. Yes, it is advanced, but there's something there for everyone from intermediate to advanced, sure to stir your creative juices.
