Men of Integrity

Men of IntegrityImagine "Our Daily Bread," written in a more contemporary tone, slanted for a male audience. Then add stiff subscription ads. That's "Men of Integrity."

"Men of Integrity" is an anecdotal, vignette-driven daily devotional magazine. Like "Our Daily Bread," it takes the reader into a Scripture with some challenges. It is not as deep as "My Utmost for His Highest," or as spiritually pushing, but it does serve a good purpose.

Topics in the issue in my hand include racism, reconciliation, marital infidelity, corruption, children and fatherhood, profanity, commitment to attending church, and temptation. A weekly roundup sums up each week with questions to remind the reader.

For the man on the go, the one who is not ready or willing to read Scripture at length, this is perfect. It is small, slipping easily into a pocket for lunchtime or train-ride reading. It is bimonthly, and supplies two months worth of devotionals.

A thoughtful man could spend 30 minutes on each day's chapter, reading through the biblical passages and thinking through the questions. A casual reader will finish it in five minutes.

Cobranded by "Promises Keepers," Christianity Today holds true to its mission, "To engage, encourage, and equip the church worldwide, sharing the depth and transforming power of the Gospel as it permeates all spheres of life."

The only real negative is the ad cards stitched in. Those can be ripped out, and tossed away.

I fully recommend subscribing to "Men of Integrity."

Like the other reviewer mentioned, this is a small devotional style publication. It is similar in nature to the "Daily Bread" devotional booklets, perhaps 4x6 inches in size. The content was fine, but we were not looking for a devotional, but an actual Mens Magazine.

I sent this to my nephew who has been sitting in prison for awhile. He wrote me a letter and thanked me profusely.

I love it that Amazon has the approval to deliver to the prisons, it makes it so easy to reach out to loved ones who are hurting and need to be healed, before they get back out in the world.

Socialist Worker - England

Socialist Worker - England"Socialist Worker" will come as a shock to your system if you have ever read a corporate-owned daily newspaper. It certainly did for me in my early years as a student at the university of Melbourne.

Here, one sees clearly how so much government policy is directed at the simple aim of increasing profits for already extremely wealthy corporate executives, rather than to meeting the needs of the people who supposedly elect governments. Any reader with an open mind will become aware how governments are geared so strongly to ensuring there are no obstacles to increasing profits of the wealthy.

"Socialist Worker" also views this struggle of workers to achieve a genuinely democratic system in which the workers plan society to meet human need as totally international. Thus it understands that the USSR after Lenin, Vietnam, China, Cuba, North Korea and Yugoslavia were state capitalist countries that had nothing to do with socialism. Rather, they were/are ran on the same lines as the West, with the priorities being the enrichment of a tiny minority at the expense of the majority. This viewpoint is not easy to accept if you read something more moderate because they focus so much on the similar ideologies and the effects of a state-owned system found in Marx, but it still is worthwhile.

The major problem with this though-provoking and hard-edged newspaper is that it is so preachy as to be exaggerated and over-emotional, rather than being as rational as it argues a democratic socialist system to be. There is no effort to look at the actual lives of working people, which at least in Australia and Red America lead them to support extremely conservative viewpoints that have one similarity to "Socialist Worker": blaming media and academia for policies that do not serve the interest of the majority.

Nonetheless, "Socialist Worker" ought to make you reconsider if not change your perspective on politics forever with a few reads.

who ever wrote the editorial review must have gotten big bucks. I am a big big socialist, and have read the magizine, and think that the it is a load of crap!

Excellence : a Magazine About Porsche Cars

Excellence : a Magazine About Porsche CarsI read a quantity of automotive magazines. I have been driving, modifying, and enjoying Porsches since the late 60s.

If your interests lie in Porsche-land, the hands down best magazine is "excellence". From the early days when it was called "Porsche" [PCNA didn't like that and forced a name change], through the latest issue, "excellence" has always had the best, most original reading on the planet.

Sure, sometimes they have inaccurate technical information and incorrect specifications. Sometimes their writers and editors have missed the enthusiast's point. BUT, nothing else even comes close for issue after issue of superior reading enjoyment.

All I can say is keep them coming!

John Rice

I thought it worthwhile to add that any issues I have had with excellence magazine as I noted previously..in terms of their tech info. They were actually small nitpicks and they remain WORLD'S ahead of their competition. No one else is close. It seems that every time I buy one of the UK Porsche magazines I am disgusted at how inept and lazy they are about keeping their facts accurate. I still sometimes buy them but only because they have a particularly unique article I want to read. I have NEVER had issues like this with excellence. I have subscribed since the first issue and suspect I will continue until I either get too old to read/drive.... or die. ;->

JR

This is a great magazine for both owners and fans of Porsche. Bruce Anderson's columns alone are a good enough reason to purhcase it. The mix of topics makes it a magazine for everyone; from reviews of the latest and greatest to articles on older Porsches which well within the reach of any enthusiast. I have subscribed for many years and can't conceive of it not arriving in my mailbox.

The market section and owner reports make it invaluable for someone looking to purchase a Porsche (no one would sell one would they?), I have been trying hard not to to use excellent or excellence in this description, but quite frankly it is an excellent magazine!

Great magazine with minimum fluff for advertisements. Good technical articles and an interesting mix of street and track and restoration. Nice to see original articles and columns not recyclyed stuff like I used to see in R & T and Car & Driver before I cancelled them.

If you are an enthusiast then this magazine will be your first read ...even before pano.

Bitch

BitchI've bought four issues of this magazine OTC and will be ordering subscriptions for the women in my family! The perspectives offered on contemporary issues relating to mass media, pop culture, politics, and social/feminist challenges are interesting, intelligent, and written with a bite of humor. In short, it's about as anti-Cosmo as you can find. Buy this for the thinking women in your life and continue the discussions! I have read through every copy I've gotten, cover-to-cover in one sitting it's that interesting. Brain food that is very entertaining!!!

This magazine is very mind opening and has very interesting articles. Unlike a lot of woman's magazines it doesn't contain any bulimic ad and it's content is not about the ads either :D Very good pick if you're for independent publishing too. Also you can get it cheaper by going to the magazine's page and subscribing from there.

I think I've been reading this magazine since I was 17 or 18 years old, and it never fails to contain a slew of great, well-written, thought-provoking articles. While I'll admit that sometimes one of their articles or short features can be kind of on the radical side of the feminism fence (I'm more of a Marxist feminist than a radical one), it's nice to see that feminist perspectives from all across the spectrum are included. You'd certainly never find these types of essays in a magazine like Cosmo, essays addressing topics such as women in religion, celebrating being single past a certain age, how women are negatively or stereotypically portrayed on television, women who embrace facial hair, and how menstruation is dealt with in various places around the world. They also have regular book and music reviews, rants and raves in the "Love It/Shove It" feature, and where to write to complain about things like female workers being exploited in another country or a tv show (in this case, Dawson's Creek, if I remember correctly) that refused to deal with the little-represented area of abortion within marriage by having some 45 year old woman oh-so-unrealistically keeping a surprise pregnancy when her other kids are almost grown.

A lot of young women today tragically believe that feminism is a bad dirty word and bend over backwards to assure people (particularly guys) that, oh, no, THEY'RE not feminists. A magazine like this should be required reading for such young women. It would not only correct their severe misperceptions, but would also demonstrate, without any preaching necessary, that all things feminist are actually pretty hip, cool, and relevant.

Macworld (1-year auto-renewal)

MacworldMacworld's glossy monthly has been around for about as long as Apple has been making Macs. I've been a subscriber for most of that time and if I had saved past issues could probably paper Cupertino's main streets with this periodical's pages.

There are a number of magazines devoted to Macs and their unusually devoted users. Macworld is probably the most mainstream and dependable of them.

As with most periodicals dedicated to high-tech fields, there is more in these pages than the casual user can digest. Many of the articles appeal to the MacGroupies subset of MacUsers, those who find the product fascinating in itself rather than merely a boon to productivity dedicated to other ends.

However, even a normal MacUser like myself (since 1987) can enjoy the coverage of all things Apple, including the constant improvements for which the company has become known and the relentless speculation about What Comes Next.

A small tornado of a controversy brews in the pages over whether Macworld should dedicate so much space to iPod and music issues, but Apple seems to have fairly dictated by its sprint in that direction that a magazine dedicated to covering the company's products will need to follow the direction it sets.

There are lots of productivity hints that if followed will keep you increasing your own effectiveness on the machine. The most useful feature for me has been the high-quality discussion of the improvements Apple continues to build into its own operating system(s).

Macworld is the go-to Mac magazine, if that's what you need.

No, I'm not a salesman for Macworld -at least, they're not paying me anything for being one. I only know, as an owner of Apple computers for over 25 years, that Macworld will repeatedly show you how to do things that (1) you always wanted to do on a Mac, and (2) you didn't know you could do on ANY computer.

See, a key reason you're buying a Mac is that it makes it possible to do so very many things easily that a PC either can't do or makes very difficult. Right? Well, as easy as Macs do make most things, there are still a lot of details that can be hard to absorb quickly when you're just trying to make things work. Especially when you feel as though you could erase something vital accidentally with just the push the wrong button.

MACWORLD GETS THAT, and has LOTS of easy-to-undertstand articles on how to reduce your fears, get things done, and even simplify the processes in the long run. Plus, they have a website, where you can look up past and side articles that pertain to exactly what you are trying to do.

In addition, as a new Mac owner, you'll find that there are tons of outside companies -large and small -that make software and peripherals for Macs. Most are very good, but some are so geek-centric that it can be hard to understand whether what they have to offer is beneficial to you or just more on your system. Macworld is very smart about helping you understand which ones to pay attention to and which ones to avoid.

Lastly, I suggest you think of Macworld as you would a guide to your favorite hobby. That is, it's likely to have a lot of information that you know, but it will also constantly update you on aspects that you don't. Plus, since new products come out constantly for the Mac, it will also keep you up-to-date on what's available that may or may not make sense for you.

In the long run, I predict that you'll soon find a Macworld subscription to be one of the cheapest (and most valuable) investments you've ever made. And good luck with your new Mac. Welcome to the fold.

Buy Macworld (1-year auto-renewal) Now

Macworld magazine has helpful information on Macs, software, Apple products and products made by other companies that are used with Macs such as printers, scanners, etc. The articles are not as in-depth as they were in the past. (I have read every issue ever published) The magazine also has less pages than in the past.

They give an overview of hardware and software and some helpful tips plus news about what is happening at Apple Corp.

A few months before your subcription ends, you will receive a renewal notice. You will be surprised to find that the renewal price is about twice as much as the original subscription price. Of course, you can start a new subscription at the lower price. But then you might miss an issue. Or you might get two issues one month and then you will only have 11 magazines from your new subscription.

Macworld should take a lesson from Wired Magazine and realize that it is possible to have a large magazine with lots of in-depth articles and a low subscription price. Hint: It is called advertising space.

Five ESSENTIAL Stars. Macworld Magazine is the one magazine that has it ALL in one convenient place and is absolutely necessary for the Macintosh computer user. Published monthly, it is chock full of articles on and reviews of the latest Macintosh/Apple equipment, software, applications, games, browsers, neat websites, and other essential products and services. From the "FEEDBACK" letters to the editor that have real substance, to an extensive "REVIEWS section covering areas like cameras, camcorders, printers, notebooks, laptops, desktops, CD & DVD recorders, etc.., to the in-depth "SECRETS" covering areas like 'the Working (office or home office) Mac', 'Digital Photo', 'Mobile Mac', 'Geek Factor', the awesome Mac OSX 'Help Desk', and the essential helpmate 'Mac 911', Macworld is the Gold Standard. It even has regular tutorials for the daring Darwin UNIX user, giving the real geeks a literal software tool kit into the inner workings of Steve Job's marvelous computer (only for the most experienced expert user). Even in cases when another magazine has a similar article, Macworld always seems to do it better, probably because it has been at the Mac publishing game longer than any other magazine to my knowledge.

The arrival of Macworld magazine at your home or office each month will cause you to set aside an hour or two to read the magazine from cover to cover, and if you're like me, store it for future use. Some competing Mac magazines come with a monthly CD disk with applications, utilities, and games, but Macworld has an interesting solution in this area: they provide a "Virtual CD", based on a URL, found at the bottom of the table of contents, that leads you to a webpage full of monthly surprises normally found on a monthly disk, eliminating the need for an evergrowing stash of computer magazine CDs. Plus you have access to previous month's articles and columns. Great idea. Five Big "CORE 2 DUO" Stars!!

Want Macworld (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

Superb Crosswords Jumbo

Superb Crosswords JumboThis and the National Observer Book of Crosswords are my favorites, both from Kappa Publishing. These puzzles are also themed and most who like harder puzzles would prefer both books. I think Kappa Publishing has improved the quality of this magazine since I last purchased it which was several years ago. I also think the print and layout of the puzzles are excellent. I would highly recommend a subscription directly from the publisher if you are interested in a faster turnaround time. There's a mixture of smaller and larger, Sunday-size puzzles. Keep up the awesome quality with this publication!

Beckett Baseball

Beckett BaseballWhen it comes to price guides, Beckett sets the standard and is the standard. For those who are avid collectors like myself, Beckett price guides are your bible. The pleasure I get in collecting sports memorabilia is the nostalgia factor and the fact that unless sports die all together in the future, you're making a great investment for yourself and quite possibly for the entire family. The simple Beckett price guides will not display each card's value, but it will give you the value on the superstars which is what you should be shooting for anyway in your card collection. Beckett does sell larger issues of their price guide to satisfy those who still prize their Joe Peppatone rookie card. For this, we are eternally grateful to Beckett. Plus, as opposed to any other sports-related magazines, Beckett's articles on hobby collecting are quite enjoyable. Also, their tips on safety of your collection is priceless!

I was very excited about getting my lst issue of the beckett magazine, but was very disappointed when I looked in the back where the price guides are and found the print was too small and blurred for me to read it. I couldn't even make it out with a magnifier. I called beckett and they do not make this magazine in a larger print.

Westchester (1-year auto-renewal)

WestchesterWestchester magazine is an excellent magazine geared, of course, to the residents of Westchester County in New York State. I live right on the border of Westchester in Putnam County, so when I saw this magazine I picked it up-and then I couldn't put it down!

The articles are very well written; and over time you will learn a great deal about Westchester, what's going on there and more. There are articles about the history of Westchester as well. Everything is well written and beautifully laid out on the page. You find out what's good and what's considered not so good--and of course you can choose for yourself. Westchester magazine also has a plethora of fascinating pictures to go with the articles in each issue.

The magazine is printed on good quality paper and you can subscribe so you never miss an issue.

There are a few more ads than I would have liked; but a fair amount of these ads are geared toward Westchester residents.

Overall, I highly recommend this magazine as a must-have for residents of Westchester County, New York.

I've found this magazine great for keeping up with lots of things in Westchester. The issues rating restaurants, salons, etc. are great, as I didn't grow up here and it gives me some ideas when choosing places to eat, get my hair done, etc. I also appreciate knowing about concerts and other entertainment. All in all, a great buy for me.
