Betty Crocker Recipe Magazine

Betty Crocker Recipe MagazineI have to say that I bought this magazine countless times next to the cash register of my local superstore before I finally decided to take the plunge and subscribe. I'm very happy with my decision. This magazine has new creations in addition to old classics as well as updates on those old classics. The instructions are far above any other magazine's and appropriate for any cook, whether a rookie or a seasoned pro. The recipes are varied, flavorful and they even go ahead and suggest a few variations and substitutions of your own. You'll never stop wanting to try something new and then experiment again on those recipes. As far as quality goes, the paper's smooth and glossy and every recipe has a big, beautiful picture to stimulate your imagination. I really like this magazine and I recommend it to everyone.

I've bought many of these cookbooklets through the years, and decided to purchase the magazine subscription as I could afford it. It's been awhile since I've read these cookbooklets, and I did not realize the new format consisted of recipe cards.

Recipe cards are good for people with good eyesight as they can read the smaller print. For older folks like me the recipe cards are hard to read. I will probably not re-subscribe to this magazine for this reason.

The old format with a recipe and a accompanying photo is much easier to read and use in the kitchen. I sure wish that was being used as the current magazine format.

Recommend with the caveats given.

Vogue - Russian Edition

Vogue - Russian EditionI am a student of Russian and I've been reading American Vogue since I was 13 (so eleven years). I find this magazine absolutely stunning. All of the 2010 editions featured models (not actresses) on their covers. They also feature more Slav/Russian models than American Vogue. This magazine is worth the extremely steep price tag! I recommend it! 5 STARS!

Campagne Decoration

Campagne DecorationCampagne = French country. Borders bookstore was still in business when I found this magazine. Though I'm not French speaking I loved it and was given a subscription for my birthday. No need to be bilingual to appreciate the novelty of style. The study time I put into each issue makes the subscription price per copy excellent. The magazine took months and months for the first copy to arrive. Magazine was ordered in March first copy came in October. Still I would order again.

I actually have not yet subscribed, so this brief review is for the magazine itself. I bought an issue at a newsstand and have looked everywhere since for it. The newsstand never got in any subsequent issues so I plan to take the plunge and subscribe because it is such a lovely periodical. Though the subscription rate is expensive it amounts to the same price as I paid per newsstand issue. It is an even lovelier magazine than Cote Sud, which has always been a favorite. Campagne Decoration seems a bit more "country" in style, more traditional Provencal homes and decor. But it is an elegant magazine, not "twee" or too sweet and cutesy but rather reflects the charming, elegant style of that lovely corner of the world called Provence. The photography is exquisite, and as the other reviewer noted, you need not be fluent in French for the pictures say thousands of words. If you are a Francophile or love the South of France lifestyle, this magazine is for you.

Access to Energy

Access to EnergyI've been a subscriber off & on for years. This is a really good newsletter that is well worth your time to read. I don't always agree with everything they say but it's still a good read. The first, main article is usually the most interesting.

If you have strong opinions and aren't willing to read things that make you think to defend them, then this is not the newsletter for you. I, for example, don't like what they have to say about ethanol.

I like that they question policies and make you look at the data again to see if you are biased and don't even know it. :-)

Access To Energy (ATE) is a monthly newsletter (mailed every other month). Each four page newsletter contains 2 or 3 long article and 4 or 5 short articles, in small type, as shown in the photo on this Amazon site. The newsletter's byline states:

"Pro-Science, Pro-Technology, Pro-Free Enterprise Monthly Newsletter"

And, that's what you get. There are hard-hitting articles on a lot of the pseudo-science of global warming. Usually there is a great article on the process of scientific thought and process. At the end of the newsletter is a list of great articles and references that have just been released.

You'll find lots of pro-nuclear articles and articles that point out the large number of deaths in Africa caused by the ban on DDT...

I like to visit [their websites]periodically and follow the articles on the best way to learn material.

Ordering this newsletter from Amazon is probably the easiest way to get started. I highly recommend this interesting newsletter. If you enjoy following the claims made on C02 you'll find the recent newsletters interesting.

The newsletter was previously published by Dr. Petr Beckman, a Electrical Engineering professor in Colorado. After he passed away, the newsletter was continued by Dr. Robinson who used to be the #2 guy with Dr. Linus Pauling (interesting story there).

Petr Beckman railed against the restraints against energy production, hence the name "Access To Energy". Some of that subject follows into this newsletter, but there is much more attention to biological themes as that is Dr. Robinson's specialty.

I really enjoy reading his material, and if you like science, I'm sure you will too.

Kitplanes (1-year auto-renewal)

KitplanesKitplanes is a different kind of magazine and one that will only appeal to a limited audience. This magazine is intended for those who love airplanes and whose interest in airplanes reaches a level that goes beyond simply flying. Kitplanes takes aviation to a different level for a magazine by focusing on actually building aircraft. Kitplanes is more than just a mechanical readit is also a creative read that explores the different ways that small aircraft can be built, the different designs, and the different styles and capabilities.

Most of the pages in Kitplanes are dedicated to design and construction. From the initial mental blueprint to the proper hardware, Kitplanes wants to help the enthusiastic hobbyist construct the dream machine. Some of the articles in Kitplanes are educational in nature, focusing on the specifics of aerodynamics, the pros and cons of using different types of metals, etc. The magazine even includes some success stories from builders who have completed their aircraft construction and want to share their results with the reader.

Mechanics are important, but in the day and age in which we live, technology is more important than ever and Kitplanes is right there to help. Small aircraft isn't as sophisticated as commercial aircraft, but the aircraft building hobbyist still wants to be as safe as possible, and Kitplanes offers plenty of tips on instrument panels, safety systems, and other things high tech in nature.

One other interesting aspect of Kitplanes is that it's a very consistent magazine. Each issue I have read contains exactly 80 pages and the departments and most of the regular features are found on exactly the same page number each month. For those who like consistency and repetition, this is a nice feature for a magazine. But this will not sit well with people who like a little variety from time to time. I am one of the types who like some variety in my magazines, so the consistency is a strike against the magazine, even if only a small strike.

Kitplanes is, overall, a pretty good magazine about a very expensive hobby. I find the articles pretty good, even though some are certainly better than others. Some are a little too brief and assume the builder needs guidance from start to finish but Kitplanes is still a useful magazine for those who dream about constructing their own airplane. It does have a few shortfalls, but for the flying enthusiast who dreams of constructing his/her own aircraft, Kitplanes is a magazine worth reading.

Good magazine. The reason I like amazion is that you get honest renewal notices, not 6 m0s early and they are 90+ of the time more competive.

I love Kitplanes because it focuses on what I'm interested in -building experimental airplanes. I'm an EAA member too, and I get their magazine. I will remain a member of EAA because of the good work they do, but their magazine has gone steadily downhill for years now, and with their new president it just seems to be getting worse, at least from my perspective. Others, I'm sure, like their new focus. But for me, Kitplanes is right on the mark.

Kitplanes has been around for quite a while, and used to be a source for information and how-to articles centered on the amateur builder. There was contagious excitement that encouraged readers to participate in their own projects, and the magazine nudged dreams ahead with construction and pilot reports that motivated builders to follow their dreams. A number of years, ago it changed its editor who changed its style --so that it focuses on glittery bits and pieces of sport aviation while only paying passing homage to the design and fabrication of grass roots aircraft building. I don't find it particularly compelling these days and think it appeals only to a small niche of readers. In a way, it's more of a vehicle for advertising rather than amateur aircraft construction.

The first copy is not due or arrived as of yet. I have purchased Kitplanes on a number of occasions and have enjoyed it. I am considering building an experimental airplane from a kit in the near future so this magazine is the most appropriate while I'm deciding what kit to purchase.

Powerships

PowershipsAs a contributing member and passionate advocate of the Steamship Historical Society, I have been a subscriber to this magazine for years. Powerships is a conduit from the minds and hearts and workdesks of many experts, some amateur, some professional, all of them enlightening. The quality of the information is very high as most of the articles are written by people who really love this type of thing and know a lot about it for the enjoyment of actually reasearching the information and the pleasure of writing about it to let the world know how interesting it is. Therefore, you don't get any commercial fluff, just well written, unbiased information in your quest to learn more about steamships. On the same note, even the advertisements are very useful and the magazine subscription is worth buying for those alone which will often alert the enthusiast to interesting events, conventions or new books. The underlying theme is that much of the knowledge is not common and it does not google well, so Powerships grants the reader information that would otherwise not be easy to find and keeps a pulse on the greater community of Steamship afficionados. Along with Warship International, I always look forward to this magazine arriving in my mailbox and I am glad to see that SSHSA has put this online for the world to discover this wonderful publication and the benefits of membership.

I have been receiving PowerShips and it's predecessor journal, Steamboat Bill, for over 40 years. I look forward to every issue. The magazine covers all types of engine-powered vessels, from the great liners to tug boats and work boats. The in-depth articles are uncannily accurate and richly illustrated. The regional columns are a very interesting way of keeping up with shipping events in different parts of the country. OUTSTANDING JOB, Steamship Historical Society of America. Keep up the good work!

Westchester (1-year auto-renewal)

WestchesterWestchester magazine is an excellent magazine geared, of course, to the residents of Westchester County in New York State. I live right on the border of Westchester in Putnam County, so when I saw this magazine I picked it up-and then I couldn't put it down!

The articles are very well written; and over time you will learn a great deal about Westchester, what's going on there and more. There are articles about the history of Westchester as well. Everything is well written and beautifully laid out on the page. You find out what's good and what's considered not so good--and of course you can choose for yourself. Westchester magazine also has a plethora of fascinating pictures to go with the articles in each issue.

The magazine is printed on good quality paper and you can subscribe so you never miss an issue.

There are a few more ads than I would have liked; but a fair amount of these ads are geared toward Westchester residents.

Overall, I highly recommend this magazine as a must-have for residents of Westchester County, New York.

I've found this magazine great for keeping up with lots of things in Westchester. The issues rating restaurants, salons, etc. are great, as I didn't grow up here and it gives me some ideas when choosing places to eat, get my hair done, etc. I also appreciate knowing about concerts and other entertainment. All in all, a great buy for me.
