Ms

MsI have noticed that Amazon.com charges more for magazines than if bought directly from the publisher. Amazon outrageously priced Ms. nearly DOUBLE what it costs if bought directly from msmagazine.com. Go directly to Ms. for a $25 yearly subscription.

There is certainly not a lack of interest on such important issues such as those mentioned in Ms. magazine because these issues affect all women all over the world. Whether it is on women's right for abortion, sex discrimination, exploitation of women and children, family and health acts or historical events on the women's movement (which I believe should really be corrected to mean a movement for all humanity because IT IS), Ms. magazine delivers the information that so many young women are lacking today in their social surroundings no matter if they be the suburbs or the slums.

I thank my literature professors who have taught me the wonderful female figures in literature that have proved women have power and deserve everyone's respect.

Imagine my utter shock when I came to a bookstore of considerable commercial success only to find Ms. magazine nowhere near the Women's Interest International section (which was instead completely packed with fashion and wieght loss magazines, I mean honestly, to give women this type of monotonous literary diet and then wonder why some of them are a bit flaky...) but rather in the Gay and Lesbian section. There is nothing wrong with this section, but I had no idea that one's sexual orientation had to fit this category for the bookstore to assume one had an interest in women's issues outside of makeup and shoes.

Practically livid to the point that I was shuddering a bit, I even moved a couple of the Ms.'s over to the women's interest section.

The store rep said that usually people who read Ms. tend to go towards the "ethnic and culture" section ( a section that Ms. was supposed to be in, but hmm...appeared to have been smack dab in the middle of gay and lesbian instead). I promptly told him, hey I"M A WOMAN, I HAVE INTERESTS OTHER THAN CLOTHES AND WHEN I CAME TO FIND MS. MAGAZINE I WENT TOWARDS WHAT I THOUGHT WOULD (SHOULD) BE THE APPROPRIATE SECTION--Women's Interest!

The next time you guys come into a store, show your support for Ms. mag. Look to see if the store even carries it and if they don't ask them why not and that you would love to see it on their shelves. If they do carry it, note where it is in relations to the Women's section, applaud them for their "astounding" assumption that Ms. should be relegated to a corner if that happens to be the case and tell the manager that you'd like to see if reach the bigger market of WOMEN IN GENERAL!!!!

As a long time reader of this magazine I've noticed that, with the purchase of Ms. Magazine by the Feminist Majority, it's on the rise again! You get everything from current events to To-Do lists to book reviews. It is a must read for every feminist out there! Don't trust me? Read it for yourself.

The very first issue of this magazine I read was their tenth anniversary issue from 1982, an issue my mother put away in my bottom drawer so I could read it when I was old enough. Looking back at that issue, which in turn looks back at older issues, and then looking at the issues since, it's dizzying to realise how far women have come in such a short period of time, and yet how far we still have to go before achieving full equality, rights, and representation. It's also downright scary to read some of these articles and updates about situations around the world and even in the United States itself; in many ways women in the U.S., as far as we still have to go, are far more fortunate than our sisters in places like Africa, Asia, the Mideast, and smaller towns in America. At the same time, such articles are not without hope, as they bring us the stories of women who are actively involved in making a difference in these other nations and smaller, more restricted, regions of America. I'm also glad that they no longer have ads in the magazine, and that they continue to run the "No Comment" segment on the back page, showcasing particularly shocking examples of sexist and misogynistic advertisements.

However, as other readers have noticed, this magazine can be too scholarly for some readers. While it's great to read these thoughtful in-depth articles about womens' struggles in other places around the world, sometimes you just want a change of pace and want something that's a little more lightweight, not so intensive in scope. People need to see that feminists aren't always so serious! I also agree that the magazine still has some way to go to reaching out to women of my generation and the younger generation (the tail end of Generation X and the older members of Generation Y), making these issues relevant to the third wave so that they won't dismiss the movement out of hand as being out of touch and outdated. Still, this is a great magazine, and I prefer it any day over something like Cosmo or YM.

Want Ms Discount?

Ms. is the most important women's magazine out there because it's about women as a whole, and not just diets and makeup and how to please a man. It's national and global news and spreads awareness without ever talking down to the reader. You may not always agree with it (I take particular offense at a 1993 cover story perpetuating the ritual abuse scare ... and the fact that it seemed like every woman who wrote in had been a victim of ritual abuse, a statistical impossibility) but Ms. encourages dialogue and feedback. I find it unfortunate that a reviewer of this magazine had a bad experience with the editor-in-chief and I hope she wrote back and demanded an apology for being rudely dismissed. You'll want to hold onto your issues long after you've thrown away those issues of "Jane." It's that worth it.

Country's Best Cabins (1-year automatic renewal)

Country's Best CabinsWhen I saw this magazine on amazon, it was not made clear that they don't have a set publishing schedule, which is CRAZY for a magazine. Even though it says you can cancel for any reason, I now am getting the runaround. Amazon says to go through the publisher. The 'publisher' says to go through Amazon. Do not buy this subscription unless you don't mind getting taken.

Mostly pretty good, but often they lose track of the fact that it's supposed to be CABINS not luxury homes.

Texas Fish and Game

Texas Fish and GameI used to enjoy this magazine but as it's states ALL OVER the web. They have really had problems. The pictures are (they admit) faked and not live action. The product reviews are simply cut and paste from the customers website (no actual review) and its about half the size it used to be with 1/2 the content. Most being from the same ole advertisers. Yes, it used to be a good source, but in the last couple of years it has really gone down hill. There are several other good choices on Amazon

for Texas Fishing and hunting. I would seriously consider those...Sorry

the truth hurts Texas Outdoor fans.

This is absolutely the best outdoor magazine not only in Texas but the entire country. No other magazine even comes close. I learn more in one issue than I do any other and I don't live in Texas. I do, however, visit quite often. This magazine tells you the best places to hunt and fish and goes into detail about how to get the most out of your outdoor experience.

Catholic Family News

Catholic Family NewsThis Catholic newspaper is generally very good month in and month out. It carries a mixture of news, pious stories of the lives of the saints, Well documented scholarly articles, and an encycilical or papal letter from one of the popes in the last 1500 years or so usually round out the issue. This publication is an excellent way to help people of whatever background learn the Catholic Faith better.

This Catholic newspaper is an excellent source for pre-1960's great writings from the Church Fathers, Doctors of the Church, great Catholic writers, articles, papal encyclicals, and catechisms, from the year 100 to 1959. I say pre-1960's because since about that time, MANY Catholic writings have been corrupted and or tinged with hidden or open errors, which a Catholic that is not learned in what the Church taught for 1900 years will not discern. This publication is an educational tool to help those people of whatever background learn the Catholic Faith as it has always been. ST. VINCENT OF LERINS (400-450 A.D.)

"What then should a Catholic do ... if some new contagion

were to try to poison no longer a small part of the Church, but all of

the Church at the same time, then he will take the greatest care to

attach himself to antiquity which, obviously, can no longer be seduced

by any lying novelty." (Commonitorium)

John Venarri is a freemason who has infiltrated the tradionalist movement. For the sole purpose to divide us. Think of this, a bishop said, ;We must abrogat Vatican 11. And then immediatly abrogate the council of Trent. Our lord said to Peter ;He who hears you, hears me, he who rejects you rejects me;.

This magazine, while presumably well-intentioned, is a veritable font of misinformation to Catholics, especially traditional Catholics who are disturbed by the events in the Church since Vatican II. Unfortuantely, CFN sets Vatican II up as a "straw man"; the writers caricature the Council in the terms that many liberals would indeed have us believe, and then knock it down by saying it was not a valid Council. While it is quite unfortunate that many liberal Catholics have (deliberately or not) twisted the meanings of Vatican II, the Council IS valid. To believe otherwise is heresy. Many ads in this magazine are from schismatic groups such as SSPX, or sedevacantist groups like MICM. (It is not logical to say that the current Pope has no authority, and then to refer to Saint ("Padre") Pio as such when it is the current Pope who canonized him. This is done in the Sep. 2003 issue.) Please avoid this magazine, and seek out good Catholic media like EWTN (which is free).

Supergirl

SupergirlI like the character and the many forms of artwork used to portray the character. And Supergirl is now featured as herself rather than Superman in a short skirt which is refreshing. And buying the subscription thru Amazon makes for a convenient bargain saving about 35% off cover price (and no sales tax!).

liked the Maetrix/Linda Danvers supergirl, plus there are an oddly numerous amount of Krypton survivors, takes away from Clark's last survivor thing

Texas Parks & Wildlife (1-year auto-renewal)

Texas Parks & WildlifeThis magazine provides good information about Texas, the parks, and the wildlife that lives in Texas and along our coasts. These magazines are keepers as the information inside never goes out of style. Highly recommend .

This is money well spent. I rarely see magazines that have anything of substance. They are just ads. Not so with this one.

Which isn't necessarily good. This magazine tries to appeal to every outdoorsman, from the tree-hugger to the blood-and-gore hunter/fisherman. Lot's of great articles on bird watching and state parks but also deer hunting and bass fishing. If that kind of thing offends you, you'll be better off reading Texas Highways Magazine.

Down Under Quilts

Down Under QuiltsBeautiful magazine and it is really great getting to know the world of quilters better. I have found that quilters everywhere have great hearts towards others. I have been buying from the newstands; but really need to subscribe to it. rjcravy

I absolutely echo the first review written by MawMawTX in April...I have been purchasing this magazine from newstands but sometimes it's not easy to find, and I am subscribing today...it will be hard to wait to receive my first issue. The photos are wonderful, and reading about quilters on the other side of the world really enlarges the world...it's nice to see other quilters' designs and ideas.

Forza

ForzaFORZA does an excellent job of detailing interesting and otherwise undiscovered aspects of the Ferrari community both here in the United States as well as abroad. It is always refreshing to read new material in an intellectual format!

By far one of the best Ferrari magazines on the market. Whether you are an enthusiast, or a seasoned collector, this magazine is fantastic. I started by purchasing issue # 1, when I was just dreaming about owning a car. First article was wonderful and described how a person on a decent living could purchase a 308. Even now, after owning several cars, traveling, and hosting Ferrari events, this is my favorite magazine. Photos and articles are wonderful. Very interesting and does not bore you as other magasines do. Simply the best. Saw one or two negative reviews that are ill-informed at best and contrived at worst. I have every issue since the begining of this magazine and cannot wait for the next issue to arrive. Bravo!!!

Awesome magazine.

Loved every page.

Just subscribed for two more years. Look forward to receiving future issues.

Was given a subscription to this mag for Christmas by my kids, since I own a 550 Maranello, and have found it far superior to the "Club" mags of similar ilk. There's actual content here, not just pages of ads and updates about what each of the club chapters did last month (zzzzzzzzz). I dropped my memberships to the various Ferrari clubs, but I'll be renewing this mag.

To the subscriber who hasn't received his first mag yet: just be patient there are only 8 per year, so it's not a monthly thing. I think my first issue after the Christmas subscription arrived in February?

To the person looking for objectivity: This is a magazine written by & for Ferrari enthusiasts, not an objective review of Ferrari models. Ferrari enthusiasts and owners tend to be a bit blind to all the warts and shortcomings of our cars, so if you're looking for objectivity, you may be reading the wrong mag.

One thing I'd suggest to the publisher PLEASE figure out a way for your subscribers to renew electronically. Printing out subscription forms, filling them in and faxing/mailing them back is soooooo 20th century. Phoning is too. Nearly every other magazine in existence has online subscribing and renewal so get with the 21st century guys!

p.s. A digital edition would be great too not to replace the paper edition, but in addition to it. This could boost your sales and wouldn't cost a ton to do.

p.p.s. Downloadable digital archives could also boost your sales, and it would be great to have a digital archive to refer to on the laptop or reader while traveling, etc. (and yes, I do have the Ferrari workshop manuals on my Kindle :))

Fair disclosure I have been a regular contributer to this magazine since issue 4 (back in 1996). I was a subscriber before that and worked hard to earn a spot on the masthead. I know many of the writers and photographers on the staff so I know that everyone loves these wonderful Italian cars. We dream about them. We talk about them and we drive them. Oh yeah, we drive them everywhere and we go fast. I hope the passion comes through in every page we really try.

And if you have an interesting Ferrari and are interested in sharing it with our readers, send an e-mail to the editor. We get great leads that way.

As to the reviewer who says the magazine is on it's last legs absolute nonsense. I have been a writer for the parent company since 1987 so I think I know a little more than the writer. The magazine is on firm financial ground and I plan on working for them another 10 years.

Classic Images

Classic ImagesClassic Images is a publication that meets the needs of any fans of the golden age silver age classic age silent age of screen stars and cinema history. Whatever you choose to call them. If you like "older" movies and the stars, directors, etc., who made them this is your magazine. Each issue has articles devoted to a number of screen star "legends". There is also an excellent section on "passings". Sadly for those of us who grew up watching TV reruns of silent films, B/W films, and everything in between during the 1950s and 1960s the list keeps growing as those ranks continue to shrink.

The legends of those days will live on as long as there is a copy of the film out there for someone else to make a copy of. This newspaper text format magazine serves as a wonderful reminder of what we might consider "the good ole days of films". The stories and photos printed in each issue are a fond reminder of how much (we) fans miss those days.

Try an issue the next time you run across one of these in your local bookstore. Then subscribe so you won't miss an issue!!!!

You will be glad that you did.

This Old House (1-year)

This Old HouseIf you're looking for d.i.y. information on maintenance and minor repairs for your old house, skip this one. As the publisher says, it's pretty much all about major restorations by professionals, and there's very little the average homeowner could even participate in, let alone do on his or her own. If you want to learn how an architect chooses historically correct replacement windows for your old ones that stick, buy "This Old House." If you just want to know how to get the old ones unstuck, move on to "Family Handyman."

If you are a fan of This Old House, then you probably want to get this magazine. If you have been watching the show for a long time (who hasn't?) then you will feel like you are reading a magazine about family, as there is usually something in each issue from each of the show's participants.

The magazine offers more in-depth information about the projects you see on television. A big reason to get the magazine is to learn more about the materials used in the projects and where you can get them. In addition, there are projects covered in the magazine which are not done on the television series.

While the magazine, in my opinion, is a bit short on exact specifics, or "how-to's," one has to keep in mind that a lot of the attitude of the show seems to be "use a professional." While I can understand doing that if you have the financial resources, it just isn't always practical. Still, if you want to be informed when you do call the professionals, this is one way to do it.

Buy This Old House (1-year) Now

This is a magazine for old house lovers -people who like the style of an older home, for whom the things that break and the things that creak inspire renovation not cursing.

My wife and I live in our second old house, and have watched the TV show since before our first. For us pragmatic Norm the woodworker, blow-dried Steve the host, and spendthrift Richard the plumbing/HVAC guy are like family. This magazine provides occasional coverage of the project house you see on PBS which is a bonus for fans. But its main focus is to show you how you can fix up your own old house.

It is a great source of ideas, inspiration, and the vendors who can sell you what you'll need. Got an old house and the money and patience for renovation? If you do, get this magazine.

This is a magazine for paid product-placement in articles, tons of ads, and so-so articles. You are paying for the name, and getting much less in return.

I HIGHLY recommend Fine Homebuilding instead of This Old House. You will not only see fabulous new and old construction, but actually take something away from it (that is the point behind magazines, right?) A magazine that actually saved me money!

I'm cancelling my subscription to T.O.H. and adding another year onto my Fine Homebuilding subscription. It's money well spent.

Jerusalem Post

Jerusalem PostThe 'Post' now has an advertising slogan claiming that the 'best newspaper in Israel(Where the principal language is Hebrew) is in English.' In my judgment though I do not particularly like this kind of 'fluff' their claim is true.

The 'Post 'is now edited by David Horowitz, the former editor of 'Jerusalem Report'. He has in my opinion and to my surprise done an outstanding job as editor. He has broadened and deepened the paper, introducing new writers. He has not as I thought he would, radically changed the political line of the paper so as to bring it in line with that of the former 'Jerusalem Report' or even worse 'Haaretz'.

The 'Post' has some truly outstanding writers and reporters. Judy Siegel is as fine a 'healthreporter' as I know. Arieh O'Sullivan is an excellent military correspondent. Caroline Glick is now , in my opinion, the strongest political writer on IsraeliMiddle East subjects in the world. I may find her a bit gloomy at times, but she provides the information and analysis in a most forceful and convincing way. Evelyn Gordon covers judicial matters with great knowledge and insight. Barbara Sofer is one of the best columnists now writing on the broad range of issues in Israel and the Jewish world. There are many others of high quality.

Horowitz likes a divergence of views, and so brings in voices whose opinions are far indeed from mine. But there is 'balance'.

The paper has also recently greatly improved its domestic coverage.

Also I believe that its weekend Shabbat magazine has improved, especially the bookreview section.

The Letters column is one of the most generous , and certainly most ablyedited. This by one of the Post's outstanding editorwriters Judy Montagu.

On the whole I would say anyone who truly cares about Jewish issues, and about Israel would do well to be a regular reader of the 'Post'.

If nothing else, one should read The Jerusalem Post online daily for the courageous coverage of the conflict offered by Palestinian journalist Khaled Abu Toameh.

The Tulkarem-born reporter is a rare commodity --a man with access to Palestinian leaders in all factions, who is not afraid to regularly detail the corruption, graft and other problems rife in the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. He is also well aware of the daily barrage of anti-Jewish hatred aired over the PA media and is not afraid to expose it. "An entire generation has been lost," he told me a little over a year ago.

After the most recent suicide bombing in Hadera, Abu Toameh took to the streets of Kabatiya, south of Jenin, to report on thousands of Palestinians celebrating the attack. He reported on the celebrations unflinchingly.

"Chanting Allahu Akbar (God is great)," he wrote, "some 3,000 people, including Fatah and Islamic Jihad gunmen, converged on [Hasan] Abu Zeid's home to "congratulate" his family on the success of the attack, which killed five people [as of Nov. 7, 6] and wounded more than 30."

But the paper has other stellar columnists and reporters as well, including Arieh O'Sullivan, Caroline Glick and Saul Singer.

And then there are the simple statistics and details that never show up in the international media. For example, the fact that 15 explosives have been found along Israel's border with Gaza since the Israeli withdrawal last summer. And the fact that Israel has suffered more than 20,000 terror attacks since 2000. And the names of the victims of suicide and other attacks.

If you want a balanced perspective from Israel--one that includes viewpoints across the political spectrum, from Arab and liberal to right--read the Jerusalem Post daily.

Electronic House

Electronic HouseI am a gadget freak and a big fan of consumer electronics of any kind. I also appreciate good high-quality audiovisual entertainment, and watching movies at home is definitely high on my list of entertainment options. With these things in mind "Electronic House" is almost an ideal magazine for me. It consistently features some of the best and most advanced home electronics products, as well as in-depth reports on some very advanced comprehensive home-entertainment setups. Many of the electronic products are very cutting edge, and not likely to be featured even in the most trendy of the technology blogs. That's the good news. The bad news is that those products tend to be way outside most mortals' budget, and are not very likely to end up in your or any of your friends' homes in the foreseeable future. Nonetheless, due to the rapidly evolving technologies and ever-decreasing prices of electronic products one can be reasonably sure that most of the gadgets that are featured in this magazine will eventually find their way to mass markets in some way shape or form.

The product reviews in this magazine are very nicely done, although they tend to be on the flattering side. If you were considering purchasing any of the featured products I would recommend checking out some other online or offline reviews. Amazon reviews in particular (if available) will give you some idea of what the actual experiences of real-life users may be, although even those should be taken with a grain of salt.

One of the nicest features in this magazine are the in-depth articles on various luxury homes that are saturated with the latest audio, video, and home automation features. These homes can be quite impressive, and looking at them could elicit some serious envy. Fortunately, the magazine also features articles on electronically sophisticated homes that are within the reach of most middle class households. At the very least, "Electronic House" will provide you with the idea of what the latest home entertainment trends are. The way I see it, even the most expensive large TV or LCD projector is much less expensive than even the cheapest new car, not to mention those luxury sports cars that are regularly featured in any automotive magazine. If you are going to aspire for a fancy new toy, home electronics is a much more accessible goal.
