Das Neue Blatt

Das Neue BlattPurchased this magazine as a Christmas gift for my mother last year. Never realized a German subscription would be available in the U.S.

German still being her first language she is thrilled. It is delivered right on time, every week, so she looks forward to it and it keeps her up to date on the European news.

Having had such a positive experience, I have reordered the magazine for another year. Ordering is easy, everything is explained, you can even print out a gift card. Absolutely worth it.

Great magazine for those who want to read the latest German news and gossip. Bought it for my German grandma. Only problem was the time lapse of the arrival dates. Many contests and rewards from the magazines crossword puzzles and such are difficult to enter. The entry date usually expires before the deadline. Still a good buy.

Pottery Making Illustrated

Pottery Making IllustratedPottery Making Illustrated is a magazine with lots of practical advice for beginning and advanced potters. There is a wide range of subjects focused on topics that are useful. Other ceramics magazines seem to be about cutting edge sculpture, but what if you want to make bowls, plates, or cups?

Pottery Making Illustrated is the place to get that information. One issue I bought had three articles I have used many times and shared with friends.

Pottery Making has many good ideas and projects, especially for teachers of pottery and for children. The articles are clearly written and easy to understand. I enjoy reading it.

I love this magazine. I've been getting it for about 5 years, and the years I've missed before that, I bought the back issues on ebay.

PMI has something for everyone, beginner or professional. It's not snooty and too artsy, they actually show you how to make stuff, it's not a photo album magazine for museum pieces! If you are a potter and need some fresh ideas this is a good place to look.

The articles vary from my scientific to fun stuff. There are also book reviews and advertising. For me this book replaces some books I might have bought on how to do stuff like make certain molds. I bought a book because of the reviews in here too. I bought a images on clay book. I can't imagine someone not getting any good info from PMI. I look forward to every one I get and read it from cover to cover.

I've always gotten my magazine on time, and never had any issues with customer service.

Vent: I don't understand why people leave one star for their problem waiting for the next issue to come out, and their subcription to start. These are 6 issues a year. If you order at the end of December and January already came out, I would imagine you'd have to wait until Feb or March to get your next issue. In a hurry? go to Borders

I like this magazine for its hands on article about making pottery and throwing and altering pottery

Ellery Queens Mystery Magazine

Ellery Queens Mystery MagazineEllery Queen's Mystery Magazine (EQMM) is the sharper image of its sister publication, Alfred Hitchcock's (AHMM). The stories are more polished, some have literary aspirations, and I'm more likely to find the well-executed twist in an EQMM story. While not every piece is a textbook mystery (some are police procedurals or psychological thrillers), all are good entertainment.

Editor Janet Hutchings introduces each piece with a description of the story, or what the author is working on, or an introduction to the writer if this is a first story. Occasional pen and ink illustrations, while not required to enjoy any of the stories, add to the feeling that EQMM is richer than AHMM. Some authors appear every month (Edward Hoch, amazing!) or almost as much (Doug Allyn) and deliver a quality story every time. There are plenty of other writers to enjoy; some are series tales with a recurring character, some create new worlds but impress with their mastery of the short story form.

EQMM relies on fewer gimmicky departments and more fiction. There is a book review column, calling your attention to novels worth reading.

If you love mysteries you should be getting both AHMM and EQMM.

Note: Starting with the 2004 issues, EQMM will publish only 10 issues a year; 2 will be "double issues" with almost twice as many pages. I remember when the Dell Magazines published 13 issues a year, including the "mid-December" one; back then the magazines came every 4 weeks. Those were the days and I have shown myself to be a certified grumpy codger.

Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine consistently delivers solid stories every month. As others have noted, not every story is a gem, but I usually find *at least* one really good story per issue, and most of the rest are quite enjoyable. (With around 10 stories per issue, you have to expect the occasional dud.)

This has been true for as long as I've been reading the magazine, which must be close to 30 years, now! The quality of the writing is consistently good, because the editors know what they're doing.

As a previous reviewer said, it is a good idea to pick up one issue to see if you like the kinds of stories EQ has to offer. But if you like that one issue, you can be sure you will enjoy others.

Note: Though it's known as EQ "Mystery Magazine", not all stories are mysteries. They do all fall generally into the "crime" category.

Buy Ellery Queens Mystery Magazine Now

My 80+ year old mother used to enjoy EQMM when I was a kid, so I thought she'd like a subscription for her birthday last year. Wrong! With the very first issue, she started complaining that there was too much bad language and sex in the stories. So I checked it out, and it did seem to be a lot, but no more than what I've come to expect from books, tv, and movies today. For her though, it was understandably racy, and to prove her point she dug out some old EQMM and read some stories. The difference in writing was immediately obvious. The older issues were infinitely better written, with less bad language and no sexual content.

I'm not saying it's a bad magazine, but if you're considering this for gift subscription for someone who enjoyed EQMM years ago, be aware that it's not the same as the magazine they used to read.

Read Best Reviews of Ellery Queens Mystery Magazine Here

EQMM is definitely a worthwhile magazine for any true fan of mysteries. Is every story exceptional, of course not and that's unrealistic to expect it to be. The stories are however entertaining and you get the opportunity to see something from some of your favorite writers. I think it's enjoyable to read a short story from writers you like whether it is a surefire classic or just another tale. To address, some of the issues by the jaded first reviewer, look at it from the standpoint of a mystery lover. If the publishers only produced great classic books, we would have only a handful of books each year, instead of the masses that readers have the fun of combing thru each year. The pages smudge, but this is not a magazine that is mass produced like People or Time or Sports Illustrated. At the current price, you could probably only get one to two stories a month for glossy pages. If you're reluctant to get a subscription then at least go to your local bookstore and buy the latest copy of EQMM and find out for yourself how enjoyable getting a quick glimpse into dozen of mystery writers can be.

Shutterbug (1-year auto-renewal)

Shutterbug(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)In many respects, Shutterbug is the mirror image of Popular Photography & Imaging. The strength of Popular Photography is its quantitative product reviews. Shutterbug does little if any measuring when they review a product. Further, I have never once seen a review in Shutterbug that was anything less than gushing. The writer will go on and on about the strength of the product and never compare it critically to other similar products on the market. I realize that magazines are reluctant to offend potential advertisers but some shred of integrity toward readers would be greatly appreciated.

The relative strength of Shutterbug is reflected in more general articles regarding photographic technique. This is the area that Popular Photography badly stumbles and this magazine definitely manages to perform at a higher level of competence. Unfortunately, these articles are still pretty basic and repetitive. Any decent entry level book on photography would contain 99% of the advice you'll ever find in Shutterbug. So while the articles are better than the reviews, it's hard to say that they alone make it worth the price of a subscription. In the final analysis, I can't recommend Shutterbug to eithe beginners or advanced photographers.

UPDATE: Shortly after posting this review, I flipped through an issue of Shutterbug at a local store. It looks like there has been a change in editorial policy as a product review took the tone of a true critique rather than being a puff piece as they so often did in the past. There still wasn't quite as much meat as I would have liked but this is definitely a step in the right direction for the magazine. Amazon does not allow reviewers to alter the number of starts given once a review is published or I would probably bump Shutterbug up a notch to 3 stars. It still is far from great, but I appreciate the fact that they've improved a bit.

If you see Shutterbug on a news stand you might think it is a typical photo mag for amateurs. The usual heavy emphasis on product reviews and how to articles. In fact the content is very much biased towards professionals. Lots of stuff beyond the interests and capabilities of the average non-pro photographer. e.g. If you want to submit stuff for their challenges they want prints.

However there is a lot of good in it for the rest of us. It is certainly educational.

For my money the best part is in the recommendations of web sites of top class photographers. A real source of inspiration.

Buy Shutterbug (1-year auto-renewal) Now

I recieved my first issue of Shutterbug after about 7 weeks from ordering it. I was disappointed in the mag. as almost all of it is ads, ads and more ads. As far as I'm concerned it should be given away for all the advertising they recieve in it. The articles they had in this issue were about very high end equipment that 99% of the readers would not be able to afford or use. Most of the ads do not even contain prices for the products, making them useless for shopping and comparing anyway. I did like the low price that amazon had for Shutterbug though, I would have really been mad if I had paid cover prices for it.

Read Best Reviews of Shutterbug (1-year auto-renewal) Here

I have been subscribing to Shutterbug for a year and received my last issue recently. I will not be renewing it for a few reasons. I guess the main reason for my non-renewal is that this magazine is heavy into product reviews. My goal in reading a photography magazine is to get helpful tips with the equipment I already have. I am not interested in page after page after page of the latest/greatest equipment that I won't be buying for awhile if at all.

The second reason for not renewing my subscription is there are WAY too many ads in this magazine. I got tired of flipping past two pages, five pages, ten pages of advertising to find the next article. Much of this magazine reads like a yellow pages for camera shops.

Finally, I found that most of the articles simply did not apply to my enthusiasm for photography. For me, the articles were too tech-focussed. As mentioned earlier, I really was looking for articles on helpful tips and such.

I just started a subscription to PC Photo so we'll see how that goes.

This is a very basic photography magazine that is best read quickly in the store and put back into the rack.

The camera and lens reviews on the internet are superior and the magazine is bogged down with a ton of advertisements.

New Mexico Magazine

New Mexico MagazineI am not from New Mexico, nor do I live there. But I have a definite love of New Mexico because of this magazine. I have read it for years and eaten up every word. This magazine makes me feel as if I am from New Mexico. I feel like I know the state, yet have only been there a few times. If I had my way, I definitely would live there the rest of my life. Alas, I can only dream...and read New Mexico Magazine to keep my desire alive!

I definitely recommend this magazine for anyone who loves the state, loves the arts, loves the lifestyles that abound in New Mexico. I will be renewing my subscription yearly, since this is my favorite magazine.

I want to like this magazine. In fact, I do like this magazine, except for the many many ads. There are ads on almost every page. There are full size ads, small ads, business card sized ads.

The pictures are lovely and the cover almost always draws me into the magazine. There are some interesting articles about this fascinating state I live in, and I am always interested in what they have listed inside. However, once I start reading it, I'm always frustrated trying to find the articles in between the ads.

This magazine has always had a lot of ads but lately it seems to have even more than normal.

I won't subscribe to this magazine for that reason.

New Mexico is one of the most fascinating states in the Union, and for several decades New Mexico Magazine has provided tourist information about the state. The magazine highlights the state's tourist attractions and provides a calendar and list of activities and events. There are articles on culture, history, dining, and art, as well as reviews of books and music.

The photography, including even some of the photos in the ads, is outstanding--two of the best issues each year are the issues containing the fall foliage and Christmas shots. There is also an amusing "One of Our 50 Is Missing" feature containing stories of those who get New Mexico confused with other states or even think that it is in another country. The magazine would be a great aid for those who plan to travel to the Land of Enchantment.

Elle - French Edition

Elle - French EditionJust like kecksburg65, I ordered a subscription back in Dec 03 and 3 months later have received nothing but grief. I submitted a customer service request weeks ago, and got no response. When I got them on the phone, they told me they now expect that nothing will be delivered until at least 6 months after the order date.

I don't know if this is just the worst customer service I've ever experienced, or if these guys are just unbelievably bad with units of time. Magazine Express claims they'll get back to you in 5-7 days, well, it's weeks. Amazon's claims delivery in 4-6 weeks.. wrong again.. it's months.

At least this gives me an opportunity to learn about reversing charges.

I ordered this back in December 2003 and as of March 2004 still have not received any issue. The Magazine Express service that coordinates these subscriptions provides no customer service and Amazon won't do anything about it either. Don't bother ordering this unless you just want to throw money away because they will bill your credit card and give you nothing in return. Amazon doesn't care about providing customer service on this and all Magazine Express is interested in is your money.

Buy Elle - French Edition Now

It's hard to add something new to what's already been said. I placed this order as a gift back in October of 2006 and here it is almost the end of February of 2007 and STILL no magazine! Amazon tells you to call Magazine Express which handles the magazine orders. However the Magazine Express customer service is a joke at best, and they do NOTHING to try to correct the problem. They promise to check into it and call you back, but they never do. And like the others have said, Amazon doesn't provide customer service on magazine subscriptions either. Obviously neither Amazon nor Magazine Express care about helping customers with problems. I guess I'll end up like the customer "ggruschow" and end up learning about their cancellation and refund policy. If THAT exists. Just an awful, awful, awful experience...

Coptic Church Review

Coptic Church ReviewCoptic Church review:

According to the publishers description it is concerned with biblical studies with emphasis on patristic exegesis, liturgical life of the Church, lives and writings of the Church Fathers, ascetic and mystic spirituality. I would add,"and much more."

First Patristic Review:

When Dr. Rodolph Yanney, decided to launch his risky project in 1980, patristic studies was not a popular subject and especially with those he targeted; second generation Orthodox immigrants from the oldest two Patriarchates of Christianity, Alexandria and Antioch. Dr. Yanney, tells me that those who supported the quarterly were neither young nor Oriental Orthodox immigrants.

One day he recieved a visitor who came to support him and praise his efforts and the CCR, who was Dr. Robert Wintermute,Duke U. professor of Semitic and Coptic languages and old testament, NC, and one of the pioneers of the Nag Hammadi Gnostic library.

Contributers & Articles:

few of the frequent article writers and translators of Coptic manuscripts in the last few years were, in alphabetical order:

Ayad,B.: The bible and the arameans of the ancient Near East.

Brock,S.: Comments on professor meinardus article.

Burkett,D.: Four Sahidic songs to St. john the evangelist.

Hammock,C.: Dualism & religious thought of Shenute of Atripe.

Johnson,D.: Oriental Christian Contribn to 7th century Britain.

Kannengiesser,C.: St. Athanasius of Alexandria rediscovered.

: Antony, Athanasius,Evagrius: The Fate of Origanism.

McGuckin,J.: moses & mystery of Christ in Cyril of alexandria.

McNary-Zak,B.: PachomianRemission.

Meinardus,O.:Copts in Jerusalem and questions on the holy places.

....:Patriarchs and prophets in the theology& piety of the Copts.

....:The heavenly Host in coptic traditions.

Ng N.: Deification in St. Athanasius

Rolfe,A.: Sources of authority in the koinonia.

Yanney, R.: Salvation in the Coptic liturgy of St. Gregory.

Penn,M.: Apa Shenute: "On the piety of Women"

Vivian,T.: Witness to holiness: Abba Daniel of Scetis.

.........:Coptic Paladiana: St. Macarius of Alexandria

.........:Coptic Palladiana; the life of Evagrius

Special and double issues;

Periodical Studies are dedicated for current importance topics, including traslations with comments of important Coptic manuscripts by Rev. dr. tim Vivian.

The Transfigured Cross: Rev. Dr. John Watson

St. Cyril of alexandria: R. Wilken, A. McGuckin,& O. Meinardus The Coptic Museum: B. Ayad

Abba Kyrillos: Patriarch an solitary: dr. J. Watson

Book reviews & notices:

These critiques and synopses are very informing reviews and selected shorter notices on new Coptic, liturgical, patristic, theological, religous and social books and studies.

Introducing CCR :

Coptic Church Review, edited and published by the Society of Coptic Church Studies since 1980, is a fine quarterly journal of contemporary patristic research, analysis, studies, and related subjects. A pioneering effort by the devoted patrologist Dr. Rodolph Yanney, who has a vivid dream, revival of Orthodoxy through patristic research and rebuilding the link. The quarterly name reveals a relation to the Church of Alexandria, and accordingly you expect to meet some Desert Fathers, and rightly you guessed.

Touring the Patristic journal:

During this millennia, In a dozen issues I read some of the very exciting stories of Christian faith heroes, as the great Coptologist, Rev. Dr. John Watson, a feature writer on CCR call them. They included the Saints of Mount Izla, with a comment of a Syriac specialist, Fr. Dale Bar Yohanon.

Last summer of 2003, we met on CCR pages, with Abba Daniel of Scetis, a compelling study by the Rev. Dr. Tim Vivian, who in 50 pages reviewed a chapter of his upcoming book, 'Witness to holiness.'

An appetizing sampler:

Saint Augin (Eugene)

Who are the Aramean Syrians

Deification in St. Athanasius

Sources of authority in the Koinonia

Coptic paladiana: St. Macarius of Alexandria

Comments on Professor Meinardus by Dr. S. Brock

CCR Readership: a fellowship

How reaching is the message of CCR, I witnessed on the SEBTS (South Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary) journal display. Reading this rich, versatile, albeit patristically oriented review, preaching the vital mission of searching our roots in belief and tradition. It will also keep you informed on books and articles, while being informed about the most ancient traditions of the church which developed Christan faith, and grew up many Church fathers, and defenders of orthodox faith.

Australian Womens Weekly

Australian Womens WeeklyThis is a wonderful magazine and well worth the increased price we Americans have to pay. It's intelligent, relevant, and a joy to receive every month (yes, every month, in spite of its name). It's like a blend of Vanity Fair and Good Housekeeping that is, if Good Housekeeping were remotely smart, which it's not, god bless it.

Each issue is full of stories on celebrities and royals, fashion, current politics, books, puzzles, sewing, and gardening. There is always a plethora of incredible recipes (the recipe books that spring from this journal are legend). I was introduced to AWW by a friend in Oz, and immediately became hooked. While the flavor is definitely down-undah, it is in no way obscure and will be enjoyed by Stateside subscribers.

It would be a wonderfully indulgent gift to any avid reader, particularly an Aussie ex-pat, or anyone who wishes American women's magazines treated women as though they had IQ's over 80. There is nothing like it in the States.

While traveling in the "Land Downunder" I discovered Australian Women's Weekly, actually a "monthly" publication, at newstands and truly enjoyed the in-depth articles that seemed to go far beyond the beaten paths of personality, home/life skills, or current events coverage of so many mags for the female reader. On our 2006 trip, I encountered a moving piece on 9/11 filtered through the eyes of an Australian journalist working in NYC at the time. In 2007, I was struck by an article on the severity of the multi-year drought faced by everyday Australians in many parts of the country, its effects on their way of life, and their ability to adapt and cope with those effects. Though I might not have been familiar with all of the celebrity personalities about whom I read in its pages, I found it easy to connect with their stories of searching for meaning in their lives, family relationships, and personal development. Some of those covered last fall/winter, however, were very familiar, Olivia Newton John, Terri, wife of Steve "Crocodile Hunter" Irwin, Sheryl Crow. The special "Pink" supplement on Breast Cancer attached to the October issue was a gem of information and survivors' personal stories.

When I discovered I could get it delivered to my mailbox here in the U.S. every month, I didn't hesitate to subscribe. The quality of the publication justifies its cost for a person who's grown to appreciate Australians for their "can do" attitude and their unique points of view on life.
