Poets & Writers Magazine

Poets & Writers Magazine(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)Poets & Writers is a non-profit organization dedicated to issues of interest to both amateur and professional writers; this is the organization's magazine. Every issue features an in-depth interview with a writer, articles on subjects such as copyright law, writer's conferences, and book promotion, a list of grant/award/contest deadlines and winners, and the ever popular classifieds where writers can find listings for anthologies and calls for manuscripts. Even the ads scattered throughout are informative. Your subscription cost gives you membership in the organization, allowing you access to their services. Published writers are eligible to be listed in their directory.

If you are a fiction writer or poet, you will appreciate this magazine. Poets & Writers is an invaluable tool for beginners and established writers alike.

There are a few magazines about writing serious writers need to read. "Poets & Writers" is one of them. It has a literary bent, but avoids the nose-in-the-air attitude. It is practical and educational, and is pleasingly presented.

A favorite factor for me are the long feature articles on the culture of writing. In the issue out now, there are two major articles. One is about author Stuart Dybek and his fiction that pulls from his experience growing up on Chicago's colorful South Side. The other is about writing contests, dealing with how ethical they are run, the view of literary judges, and when a writer should considering entering one.

The secondary articles are as informative and as useful, whether you want to learn about promoting your book, doing online workshops or understand the trends driving the industry.

Contests, incidentally, are a big part of PW's value. The magazine tells you who won, and which contests/grants are currently accepting submissions. PW is careful to screen which contests are listed, ensuring only legitimate ones make it through the editors.

The writing itself is interesting. It is not always true that writing magazines are fun to read. It should be, and in the case of PW, everything is engaging.

PW's design is clean. It looks like what a small press literary magazine should look like. The typography and layout are not pretentious or overbearing, but get the job done. It is never work to read this magazine.

I fully recommend "Poets & Writers." You will be better informed about writing and writers, just like the titles implies.

Certainly, it depends on what you're looking forthis periodical is thick and comes every two months. I felt that maybe too much of its thickness came from the large number of ads, mainly ads for writing retreats, seminars, or contests. I was interested in those things, but I was more interested in instruction/tips/exercises that would help me learn about writing, and this I felt was in somewhat short supply. So I didn't renew this, and instead subscribe to "The Writer," which comes monthly, includes lots of instruction/tips/exercises, as well as some ads and notices about opportunities for writers, but not as many as this publication. "Poets & Writers" does include some good interviews, bios, and reviews, but for my money, I favor "The Writer."

I've been a P&W subscriber and reader (even when not a subscriber) for years. I've also tried various other writers' magazines, such as The Writer and Writer's Digest. The latter two were fine when I was just beginning to dip into the freelance market, just beginning to look at publishers for first manuscripts, but when I gained more experience, I soon realized those just didn't make the cut anymore. The articles were too often repetitive and geared towards such elementary basics that I was no longer gaining new insights. P&W was the next step up.

P&W provides advice, inspiration, informative interviews, current resources for the more experienced and discriminating writer. The bimonthly issues include articles, detailed listings of markets, contests, grants, and helpful, relevant ads. For the price, this is the best magazine available today for the writer who has a portfolio already underway and keeping an ear to the ground for more, staying up to date with what's rumbling in the literary world. With its up-to-date information, I've been able to leave the others aside, including that old bible, Writer's Market, which was, unfortunately, obsolete the moment it was off the presses.

Highly recommended for the writer wanting more.

There's an inescapeable feeling when reading most writing

publications that you're about to be fleeced. There are ads

that offer instant publication, or expensive editorial and

design services. There is also a tone of phony upbeat optimism

about success in what is admittedly one of the most competitive

arenas in the world.

So Poets & Writers is a relief and a blessing. It offers realistic,

unfawning stories about the experience of real writers. It

also has listings of real prize competitions (not the phony

ones that are about collecting entry fees), winners of

competitions and notices of grants and awards.

Perhaps the best endorsement of all comes from my discarded

copies. I bring them to the magazine rack at my gym. As I

walk past the ranks of people doing their dutiful cardio,

I almost always see one copy being read.

Next to the magazine of the Author's Guild, there's no

better periodical for the committed writer.

Disney Pixar Cars

Disney Pixar CarsNow, as I write this review, let me make it clear that I'm an actual subscriber... with no kids... and I don't exactly fit in the "boys ages 5-9" category. When you subscribe to Cars Magazine, you'll find yourself fully immersed in the world of the beyond-incredible films and shorts. It's a delight to read and an absolutely awesome publication. I'll give you a tour of all the features of the magazine and its many pros and its few cons.

Each issue usually begins with either a "Close Up" or a "Road Trip". Close Ups are interesting, well-put-together profiles of various Cars characters. The folks at Pixar have a story for every vehicle, even if they have less than a minute of screentime, and it's a fun collage and fact-listing of the charries. If you've spent a lot of time looking at Meet The Cars or the Character Bios online, you won't learn anything new, but it's awesome all the same. Road Trips are one of my fave features -these are usually interviews or articles on what's going on in the "World of Cars". Such as a recent interview with Rob Gibbs, director of the Tall Tales shorts and an article on Cars Land. They're really good at being informative and entertaining, although they aren't in every issue.

Usually following this are the games, which are prevalent in every issue, multiple times an issue. The games are fun, though the majority are simple enough for a 5-9-year-old. Though I must say, some of the games were challenging enough to have me stumped! :)

The magazine's other major section is the comics. There usually range from 2-3 comics per issue, the first two usually longer and the third shortest. They're really well-written and on-canon with the Cars series. Some of the highlights include extensions of Mater's Tall Tales and new stories about some of the lesser-known characters, plus new stories of familiar characters (such as Francesco and Holley). They're one of the highest points of the publication!

Then there's Cars World, which delves into fascinating factoids about vehicles, racing, and car technology. I've learned a lot from Cars World that I never would've known!

And finally, there's Cars Club, the place where kids can send in their Cars artwork and creations.

The rest of the magazine is usually heavily populated with games, crafts, coloring pages, and a pull-out poster in every issue. From a physical standpoint, the flaw with the posters and some of the craft stuff is that cutting out or removing the pages will damage your magazine. Most children's magazines will have something on the back of the "removable" stuff to keep from messing up the rest of the magazine, but unfortunately, there are a lot of super-cool posters that I won't be able to take out without losing a couple of games pages in the process. I hope they address this issue in the future, and, by the time you read this, it may have been. Bottom line, the magazine's a ton of fun! If you have a Cars-centric kid in your household, then they'll most likely enjoy it. If you're a Cars-centric teen/adult, then just keep in mind that it IS meant as a children's magazine; I enjoy it primarily because I'm a Pixar geek and I enjoy kids' publications. If that's you, then you'll enjoy it. If you're looking for something a little more in-depth about the diecast-collecting hobby or the making of the movies, Cars Magazine isn't that (or at least isn't that yet!). The price isn't that great, but it'll make for some serious smiles when you pull Mater and Lightning out of your mailbox... whether you're nine or nineteen or ninety!

My little 3 year old grandson wanted mail just like his big brother and he picked this out. A great magazine for little ones and he loves that it has his name on the address. Great stories and puzzles to do with your children. You would not be dissapointed and neither will they.

Music K-8 C-W Compact Disc

Music K-8 C-W Compact DiscI've gotten the Music K-8 Magazine since it started 20 years ago. It's a GREAT teaching tool. I love it! Unfortunately, it's cheaper to buy through Plank Rd. Publishing than it is through Amazon.com. I love Amazon and shop here most of the time, but this product should be ordered from the company that puts it out.

Elle - French Edition

Elle - French EditionJust like kecksburg65, I ordered a subscription back in Dec 03 and 3 months later have received nothing but grief. I submitted a customer service request weeks ago, and got no response. When I got them on the phone, they told me they now expect that nothing will be delivered until at least 6 months after the order date.

I don't know if this is just the worst customer service I've ever experienced, or if these guys are just unbelievably bad with units of time. Magazine Express claims they'll get back to you in 5-7 days, well, it's weeks. Amazon's claims delivery in 4-6 weeks.. wrong again.. it's months.

At least this gives me an opportunity to learn about reversing charges.

I ordered this back in December 2003 and as of March 2004 still have not received any issue. The Magazine Express service that coordinates these subscriptions provides no customer service and Amazon won't do anything about it either. Don't bother ordering this unless you just want to throw money away because they will bill your credit card and give you nothing in return. Amazon doesn't care about providing customer service on this and all Magazine Express is interested in is your money.

Buy Elle - French Edition Now

It's hard to add something new to what's already been said. I placed this order as a gift back in October of 2006 and here it is almost the end of February of 2007 and STILL no magazine! Amazon tells you to call Magazine Express which handles the magazine orders. However the Magazine Express customer service is a joke at best, and they do NOTHING to try to correct the problem. They promise to check into it and call you back, but they never do. And like the others have said, Amazon doesn't provide customer service on magazine subscriptions either. Obviously neither Amazon nor Magazine Express care about helping customers with problems. I guess I'll end up like the customer "ggruschow" and end up learning about their cancellation and refund policy. If THAT exists. Just an awful, awful, awful experience...

Flute Talk

Flute TalkOh what can be said about this periodical, but I can talk about Flute Talk all day long! When I'm not playing my wood wind, or streaming some Native American Flute albums, I'm reading this magazine. Very informative, fun, and helpful! My E-Flat key was broken, and this held my hand as I stepped up the stairs that was fixing my flute! I give this FIVE STARS! A good gift for any aspiring blowers!

I have been a subscriber to this magazine in the past. It is still a good informational tool for the flutist of all levels. The writing of the articles is not the most professional, but again, the info is good. It was a treat to find that my past flute teacher, Mr. Robert Willoughby, is an editor for this magazine. He's still an active teacher and flute contributor now in his 80's. It goes to show what I learned as his student--he truly loves all things "Flute" !! (He's also a really good human being !!)--Flute Thinker

Most of all...have fun!

Family Handyman (1-year auto-renewal)

Family HandymanHere's a fun and enjoyable magazine for a homeowner, or anyone who needs to do small to large home projects.

This is not a stuffy magazine on how to install your Italian marble whirlpool or how to remodel your 1875 New England Colonial. This is for the typical homeowner who wants ideas on new projects, and how to repair the everyday items around your house. Humor and well laid out instructions are the backbone of this magazine. (One of the best things is they admit where they made errors along the way of the project.)

What I like about this magazine?

***Ask Handyman

Here are questions from readers that are answered on various projects.

***Workshop Tips

In this section readers offer suggestions to use in your workshop to make a project go smoother.

***Handy Hints

More reader suggestions to help around the house. (It's like having that wise old handyman offer you tons of tips and ideas.)

***Great Goofs

Funny errors do-it-yourselfers offer on projects they attempted.

What I don't like about the magazine?

***New Products Section

These are the short, usually a paragraph or two, tips and suggestions that include a new product that makes a project easier. A web address or toll-free number to order the product follows the article. I often wonder if the product is really good or if the manufacturer just paid the magazine to talk it up.

As you can see the number of advantages far outweighs the disadvantages so a strong rating is a must for this magazine. I hope you enjoy it!

This magazine strikes the perfect balance between ambitious home improvements and simple quick fixes of home maintenance. As a "weekend warrior" around the house, I want to see projects that I can actually do in a reasonable amount of time and without every specialty tool known to mankind.

Every issue there is one project that might take 3 weekends and even if I don't intend to do them, I always learn something. Very clear, easy to understand instructions and tips along the way.

There are a good selection of cool tools and time saving tips for everyday projects. They embed enough humor to keep the reading interesting. About the only bad thing I can say is that occasionally, they get a bit corny with their jokes but even that has seemed to drop off lately.

Buy Family Handyman (1-year auto-renewal) Now

My ONLY gripe with this magazine is that the pictures are like those you would find in GQ magazine: they hire models to show you driving a nail or shoveling dirt for that new patio. These people use only brand new tools (brand name label showing of course) in a perfect-world dust free environment. The pictures make it look like it's a Sears catalogue.

Aside from that, the articles are great making it one of the best magazines for the do-it-yourselfer. I have saved more money from the tips in this magazine than any other magazine I subscribe to. Most articles can be done by any semi-skilled craftsman with access to a decent set of tools, making it an approachable magazine for the DIY'er.

I highly recedommend this magazine in conjunction with Fine Homebuilding magazine. In that magazine you will find that the pictures are of real people operating used tools in a real environment. The articles in Handyman are a bit more down-to-Earth, but together you will get the most benefit.

I like the information brought forth in this magazine. Some things were relevant, some not (25 steps to cleaning my car is not very relevant). The only gripe I had with this mag is the effluous flow of Viagara and "Better Sex" video ads sprawled throughout the magazine-I counted SEVEN such ads in one issue! My kids love to read "This Old House" and "Old House Journal," but "Family Handyman" was off limits. Too bad. To the magazine writers: Not EVERY handyman-type magazine reader is a man, and not EVERY magazine reader needs to be bombarded with the same crap that floods my email inbox.

Want Family Handyman (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

When I pay for 12 issues, I expect to receive 12 issues. The most recent issue of Family Handyman contained a letter saying that they were so proud of the current issue, they were going to count it as two. If you object to this please contact customer support. WHAT A RIPOFF! I cannot believe that these people would even attempt such a thing. I contacted customer support and I was told that my subscription end date had been restored back to Apr 2012. I really wonder how many times they have done this to me in the past. I almost threw away the letter that explained they were doing this thinking it was just another pitch to get me to extend my subscription. I checked through the magazine with the idea of contacting the advertisers and explaining to them what kind of people they are paying the advertising money to. That is when I noticed that this magazine does not even have an adverisers index.

I found this link on the internet. Please make your voice heard. I know I am going to.

Recently described (in The Daily Telegraph) as `the bible of the industry', OPERA has been the world's leading commentator on the lyric stage for almost 60 years. We were founded in 1950 by Lord Harewood, and since then have provided unrivalled coverage of events through a mixture of reviews (live performances, recordings, books), features and analysis, plus monthly listings of events worldwide. Our long-standing editors--Harold Rosenthal, Rodney Milnes and (since 2000) John Allison--have ensured continuity, and our editorial board is made up of the most distinguished opera critics from Britain's national newspapers. Though London-based, we have a network of international correspondents, covering performances from every corner of the globe

Zoobies

ZoobiesThe pictures were interesting, and really neat, but the magazine itself is poorly constructed and barely held up to one reading from our daughter. Also delivery was sporadic at best. It say 6 issues, we recieved more like 4 of them. It's an expensive subscription. If you want a fun magazine for babies and toddler try "Babybug" instead.

Cute idea but lame execution.

Zoobooks recommends Zoobies for ages 0-3 years. At 18 months, my daughter is bored at this very simple pamphlet of a few pictures. I asked to switch to Zootles and customer service refused. Not happy with my purchase or this company.

Buy Zoobies Now

I ordered this for my infant twins who both LOVE to look at books and be read to, and they did enjoy some of the pictures in this "magazine" which is why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. But this is really little more than a pamphlet with thick pages. I subscribed almost 4 months ago and have received ONE booklet. For the price, you can easily go to a bookstore and buy several nice board books that will be more durable and get much more use. A magazine for babies might seem like a good idea but I highly recommend just joining a monthly book club or finding something else.
