Poets & Writers Magazine

Poets & Writers Magazine(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)Poets & Writers is a non-profit organization dedicated to issues of interest to both amateur and professional writers; this is the organization's magazine. Every issue features an in-depth interview with a writer, articles on subjects such as copyright law, writer's conferences, and book promotion, a list of grant/award/contest deadlines and winners, and the ever popular classifieds where writers can find listings for anthologies and calls for manuscripts. Even the ads scattered throughout are informative. Your subscription cost gives you membership in the organization, allowing you access to their services. Published writers are eligible to be listed in their directory.

If you are a fiction writer or poet, you will appreciate this magazine. Poets & Writers is an invaluable tool for beginners and established writers alike.

There are a few magazines about writing serious writers need to read. "Poets & Writers" is one of them. It has a literary bent, but avoids the nose-in-the-air attitude. It is practical and educational, and is pleasingly presented.

A favorite factor for me are the long feature articles on the culture of writing. In the issue out now, there are two major articles. One is about author Stuart Dybek and his fiction that pulls from his experience growing up on Chicago's colorful South Side. The other is about writing contests, dealing with how ethical they are run, the view of literary judges, and when a writer should considering entering one.

The secondary articles are as informative and as useful, whether you want to learn about promoting your book, doing online workshops or understand the trends driving the industry.

Contests, incidentally, are a big part of PW's value. The magazine tells you who won, and which contests/grants are currently accepting submissions. PW is careful to screen which contests are listed, ensuring only legitimate ones make it through the editors.

The writing itself is interesting. It is not always true that writing magazines are fun to read. It should be, and in the case of PW, everything is engaging.

PW's design is clean. It looks like what a small press literary magazine should look like. The typography and layout are not pretentious or overbearing, but get the job done. It is never work to read this magazine.

I fully recommend "Poets & Writers." You will be better informed about writing and writers, just like the titles implies.

Certainly, it depends on what you're looking forthis periodical is thick and comes every two months. I felt that maybe too much of its thickness came from the large number of ads, mainly ads for writing retreats, seminars, or contests. I was interested in those things, but I was more interested in instruction/tips/exercises that would help me learn about writing, and this I felt was in somewhat short supply. So I didn't renew this, and instead subscribe to "The Writer," which comes monthly, includes lots of instruction/tips/exercises, as well as some ads and notices about opportunities for writers, but not as many as this publication. "Poets & Writers" does include some good interviews, bios, and reviews, but for my money, I favor "The Writer."

I've been a P&W subscriber and reader (even when not a subscriber) for years. I've also tried various other writers' magazines, such as The Writer and Writer's Digest. The latter two were fine when I was just beginning to dip into the freelance market, just beginning to look at publishers for first manuscripts, but when I gained more experience, I soon realized those just didn't make the cut anymore. The articles were too often repetitive and geared towards such elementary basics that I was no longer gaining new insights. P&W was the next step up.

P&W provides advice, inspiration, informative interviews, current resources for the more experienced and discriminating writer. The bimonthly issues include articles, detailed listings of markets, contests, grants, and helpful, relevant ads. For the price, this is the best magazine available today for the writer who has a portfolio already underway and keeping an ear to the ground for more, staying up to date with what's rumbling in the literary world. With its up-to-date information, I've been able to leave the others aside, including that old bible, Writer's Market, which was, unfortunately, obsolete the moment it was off the presses.

Highly recommended for the writer wanting more.

Want Poets & Writers Magazine Discount?

There's an inescapeable feeling when reading most writing

publications that you're about to be fleeced. There are ads

that offer instant publication, or expensive editorial and

design services. There is also a tone of phony upbeat optimism

about success in what is admittedly one of the most competitive

arenas in the world.

So Poets & Writers is a relief and a blessing. It offers realistic,

unfawning stories about the experience of real writers. It

also has listings of real prize competitions (not the phony

ones that are about collecting entry fees), winners of

competitions and notices of grants and awards.

Perhaps the best endorsement of all comes from my discarded

copies. I bring them to the magazine rack at my gym. As I

walk past the ranks of people doing their dutiful cardio,

I almost always see one copy being read.

Next to the magazine of the Author's Guild, there's no

better periodical for the committed writer.

the forthcoming novel bang BANG from Kunati Books.ISBN 9781601640005

Houses : Ah

Houses : AhThis magazine has some wonderful architecture and modern design. If you like modernism or are planning to build a modern style home, this is the magazine for you. It has floorplans and square footage of the featured homes. In many instances, it also tells what the homes cost to build.

I get these for $9.95 from my local bookstores. They don't cost anywhere near the price quoted here.

I bought this magazine at a local bookstore in California, and I found it very well edited and designed. The articles have the all the most important information about each project (which many house design magazines lack), and it displays a variety of contemporary modern designs and techniques that can inspire those looking for liveability with style. Highly recommended even if you do not live in Australia, where it is published.

Buy Houses : Ah Now

I'm not sure why I got this magazine but I really wish I hadn't. I've gotten three issues now and each one has been nothing but 1950's style modernism. I would hate to live in any of the houses they review. I find them all cold, miserable and most uncomfortable.

Smithsonian (1-year)

SmithsonianIf you enjoy reading the National Geographic, or enjoy going to museums, or like the Discovery Channel I would recommend subscribing to this magazine.

The feature articles in the Smithsonian are enlightening and well researched. The feature articles often take place internationally. Recent articles have whisked me away to Morocco, Egypt, London. I look forward to receiving the Smithsonian every month.

Pros

Feature articles are uninterrupted by ads.

International feature articles

Printed on quality paper

Smithsonian used to be informative and intriguing. Now it looks like any other pop culture mag. A whole issue on food?? I can go to Cuisine for that. Articles in this current issue (May) look depressingly like People and the new version of Time--slick, clever, shallow, "with it." That's not what Smithsonian was all about--it dealt with varied topics that surprised. I can get shallow by turning on the TV or watching the Huffington Post. Won't be renewing.

Previous review from April 2012: Smithsonian Magazine used to be thick and full of intelligent articles. It's been stripped down and dumbed down. Disappointed. Will not renew.

Update Nov 2012: Glad to say that the latest issues have been very rewarding, things seemed to have turned around with the newish editor. Am pleased!

This is a renewal to our current subscription and the first I have done through Amazon. This magazine is so very enjoyable but the price is generally high through Smithsonian. This price is very reasonable and we have received far quicker subscritpion verification than I expected.

The new Smithsonian format is a disaster. I have cancelled my subscription after over 20 years of subscribing to the magazine and sending it to my relatives as Christmas presents. It used to be an eye catching, entertaining and informative read. I ranked it with National Geographic and now the history focus is lost on something that I cannot even identify. It ranks with People or our local city scape magazines. And they're free. That's it. I found no articles in the last three issues that appealed to my taste. Why would the editor remove the history emphasis particularly in a journal with the name Smithsonian?

Guitar Aficionado (1-year)

Guitar Aficionado"Guitar Aficionado" is an interesting periodical about fine and unusual guitars, and the guitarists who collect, cherish, and play them. It's not exclusively a guitar magazine, as it goes off on tangents largely related to affluent lifestyles (e.g. topics like the world's best coffee, ten cars to covet between $50,000 and $500,000, etc.) which is the reason I docked it a star. Don't get me wrong, I'm interested in the topics at hand, but there are so many interesting guitars and guitarists out there that I'm not sure that more guitar coverage here wouldn't be a better move...of course I am savvy enough to realize that that market is already being addressed by other fine magazines, and "Guitar Aficionado" does need a marketing niche of its own. It is just my personal preference.

Now that I have quibbled, let me say that I really like this magazine. The coverage of the exotic and unique in the guitar world is compelling, and the coverage of artists both past and present is always interesting. It is a striking magazine visually with great illustrations and well-written pieces addressing lesser-known facets of the six-string kingdom. A new issue in the mailbox is like a Christmas present; not only do you not know what's going to be in it, you know you don't know and the anticipation is sometimes palpable.

I like "Guitar Aficionado," and recommend it to people who want a more novel approach to musical journalism.

American Bee Journal

American Bee JournalAlthough this publication is geared toward the advanced hobbyist or commercial beekeeper, I found it to be very helpful as a beginner. Learning about the beekeeping industry from a more global perspective is important if one is considering expanding from the hobby to earning a living through beekeeping.

You're not going to learn how to get started here in the magazine, but the American Bee Journal moves you past the simplest "where do I put the hive" to seeing what other people do, what the history is, and what all different scale bee operations look like. The context of beekeeping is quite important, and this is a great way to get that context.

My husband is a beekeeper and I am a bee lover. We both enjoy the magazine for different reasons. He reads from cover to cover and I enjoy looking at the pictures and when my husband asks me to purchase items he needs for his bees, the classified section and the wide assortment of ads give me all the help I need.
