Gun Digest (1-year)

Gun DigestAs a Certified Glock Armorer who does the Gun Show circuit, I am quite versed on the Glock. This publication keeps me informed on the various other brands of guns, accessories, and ammuniton prices. It's frequent publication is both a good thing and a bad thing. Yes, it's a little more current (as current as print work can be), but the frequency in the mail box means I probably only read about every other issue. If you are into a specific shooting sport or hunting, there are other publications for you, but this is a good general knowledge publication.

It took five weeks from date of ordering to receiving my first copy so you must be patient. However when it arrived, I was very pleased. Good articles, lots of gun-related classifieds, this will be a fun read. The quality of the paper is what you would expect in this type of biweekly publication, just a little better than newsprint and so the quality of the illustrations isn't up to the annual "Gun Digest" publication but this is only to be expected.

I subscribe to this magazine for my husband. As a gun enthusiast, he reads each issue cover to cover as it provides reliable information for many types of firearms.

Its ok reading material. There's alot of ads but it's not too bad I guess, even better if you live where most of the ads seem to be from.

Before the internet with auctions and sales sites this was your source for selling gun and gun related items as well as gun show dates. A lot of sellers have jumped ship for the easier electronic sales tools, but this this is still my favorite. Paper sales allow you to circle , with a pencil, or make note. To keep up with trends of items of your interest as well as sales of all interested items. Call me oldfashioned but throw away the batteries and unplug the power. I just love paperback versions of sales. Try it for awhile if you,ve been away, caught up in the email world, and see how much you will love this style. You will find yourself waiting for the mailman to deliver your next issue.

Gun Dog (1-year auto-renewal)

Gun DogIf you are a true gun dog enthusiast, Gun Dog is the magazine for you. The writing is some of the best I have read anywhere (including the N.Y. Times Magazine and Vanity Fair) and is replete with such beautifully crisp description that you feel as if you are there with the hunter. There are many do-it-yourself articles on such things as building dog boxes, ramps, etc., as well as training advice, and excellent gun reviews. Each issue spotlights an interesting gun dog breed and gives hunters as well as dog enthusiasts the low-down on both positive and negative aspects of the breed. The photos are absolutely gorgeous and border on art. I am always looking forward to the delivery of the next issue, and have been very pleased with its low price in comparison with some other "copy-cat" magazine-attempts like "The Pointing Dog" which are replete with advertising, and not much else! If you want to learn about bird-hunting or bird-dogs or just would enjoy the vicarious experience of the hunt and the pleasure of a good hunting dog, then this is the magazine for you!

This is my favorite magazine. Lots of articles on training, different breeds, etc. Advertisements for useful tools that you just can't find anywhere else. I picked up my first magazine off the shelf, and immediately bought a subscription. My subscription started the issue after my breed was featured and customer service sent me a back issue, no problem. There is also a forum and a facebook page dedicated to this magazine that has extra information on it.

Gun Dog is a good, but not great, magazine. Customer support is very poor.

Ifr - Instrument Flight Rating

Ifr - Instrument Flight RatingIFR is one of several Belvoir aviation publications (Aviation Consumer, IFR pilot, light plane maintenance...) and retains their fine blend of humor and practicality. The assumption is the reader either has an IFR rating or is well-on her way.

Each issue has a general theme, often related to the season. For example, a recent issue explored zero-zero (no visibility, ceiling) takeoffs, as would be observed if a field were socked in with a 50' thick layer at ground-level. It's perfectly legal for part 91 (general aviation) flying, but often neglected as an option. Included in the article are legal considerations and ways of mitigating risk.

The monthly columns are also fun. Two of my favorites:

IFR quiz -related to the primary topic of that issue, the quiz involves a combination of interpreting ATC regulations, navigation, chart symbiology and the realities of IFR flying. These are invaluable because you learn about the *intent* behind the presentation.

On the Air -the aviator's equivalent of bloopers.

Great pulp. Get a better price by joining AOPA. $24 for 12 issues.

This monthly magazine has many real world tips and articles on flying IFR safely written by people who fly and know the systems, procedures and methods. I have been a sbiscriber for years and as long as I'm flying, I'll keep reading IFR.

This magazine is ford those who have (or are close to getting ) their instrument rating. It features very practical discussions about how to operate in the system. It is easy to find books that explain the rules or AIM but this goes behind the scenes to explain how controllers look at situations and how they can (and sometimes can not) help. The editor is Paul Berge an ex controller and CFII who has a dry wit and is fairly quick to be critical or complimentary to ATC and the FAA as appropriate. He does a great job of explaining how "the other side" thinks and how to get the most out of the system.
