D Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

D MagazineOMG, the reviewer below is a harsh critic of this magazine. Frankly, I love it, yes it's not the New Yorker, but Chr*st what is, it's just a fun read, dude. I enjoy the gossipy articles on the ends and out of Dallas, I know some of the people they write about and im amazed how accurate they are. I admit, I could not wait for the issue on the most expensive houses in dallas, or the best neighborhoods or the gossip on Mayor Miller. If this is not your kind of read, then dont buy the magazine, but for what it is..a really fun read every month..it excels...the reviewer below needs to loosen up and not be so sanctimonious, the magazine is what it is and for that i am grateful, frankly, one New Yorker is enough.

Magazine an be entertaining but contains the usual "society" pictures. Lots of useless lists of Drs, Dentists, Lawyers, etc. For me, strongest feature is the food and restaurant articles as well as a useful list of restaurants by cuisine. I like to read it in conjunction with the more interesting and irreverent weekly Observer.

Blade (1-year)

BladeThis is clearly the top choice in custom knife magazines, though Knife Illustrated is also a good choice. It's probably 60% custom / 40% production.

The articles are good and insightful, some very high quality color pictures, and it's generally speaking entertaining & instructive.

The 4 star only rating is due to (1) the lack of objectivity of the articles (I have *never* read a negative review), and (2) too many pictures of custom knives are in B&W. I would happily pay double the price, get half as many issues, but in a glossy, high quality paper, premium binding, etc...

I purchased the Blade subscription as a gift for a friend who is a knife and weapon enthusiast. He reads each issue several times and could not have been more pleased.

I gave my husband a subscription to Blade magazine for Christmas. He buys it a lot as he is a knife collector. He was very happy to know he won't miss an issue.

this past year i got myself a blade magazine subscription and liked the magazine enough to buy my dad a subscription this past father's day. other reviews mention that there are a lot of ads. there are some ads but i don't mind it so much being in the publishing business and knowing that's where the $ is made. that's probably how the publisher keeps the subscription affordable.

i think the magazine gives a good mix of knife knowledge and current issues surrounding the average knife collector/carrier. i'm also a lifetime nra member and receive the nra's america's 1st freedom magazine. i find blade to be a more diverse and enjoyable read.

I bought this magazine subscription for a friend who also enjoys custom knives. It's a good magazine, but about half the issues never make it to his house. I'm not sure whether this is a problem with Blade, or what.

Z Magazine

Z MagazineMy review follows questions, so you can find the information you need based on your needs.

If you are looking at this magazine, you are probably searching for something with a leftist insight, if not this is not for you. Of course, if you are like many political junkies you may be interested in seeing all sides, this is for you.

What is its political position?

The magazine is far left. If you are looking for something that tilts democrat, I suggest, in order of moderation, The New Republic (more DLC in nature lately) The American Prospect, and The Nation. This magazine has a Green Party, and Libertarian Socialist feel.

What is the difference between the content in the magazine and the stuff on the website?

In brief: a lot. The magazine offers a more journalistic commentary feel on current events and investigations. It covers labor, feminism, environment etc. It feels a lot like In These Times in what it covers. The Website has a lot of leftist academic oriented articles that are posted daily.

Is it worth the subscription?

Yes, except a lot of the stuff is online. I would really check the articles online before you decide to buy it. It will be hard to come by in a library.

Z magazine brings together some of the best journalism and opinion writing on a diverse array of pertinent global and local political matters (certainly political in the broad sense)

Probably the best resource for perspectives from the so-called "left" and news of world events that can be very hard to find elsewhere. For a more editorial type magazine, see The Progressive, which is more a mainstream style of monthly magazine, but still offers a great degree of clarity on important issues.

The best publication of it's type. Should be in every library and every school. Informative, literate and provocative. My only negative is that I wish it was a larger publication. I have had my subscription for 4 years and it is a definite read for me each month.

Auto Motor Und Sport

Auto Motor Und SportAssuming you can read German, then "auto motor und sport" is simply an amazing publication there is nothing else like it. Come to think of it, Japanese car magazines are perhaps better but few outside Japan can read them.

This magazine presents and tests cars that few in the US will ever see thanks to our arrogant Federal regulations. The test standards in this magazine make US publications look childish; e.g. a vehicle's 0-60mph time is not the end-all, be-all performance test... no wonder American cars are the way they are...

In other words, this is not for NASCAR fans, but for those who appreciate tests of vehicles done from the perspective of the world's most demanding drivers Germans this is the perfect magazine.

Hot Bike (1-year auto-renewal)

Hot Bikeso, I ordered for my husband and I am not jealous, a bit ...smile, but it's just so much of it that it borders on, well, it just seems more provocative than Harley, as described. If I'd wanted this, I would have ordered a strictly Harley mag like Iron Horse. The descript says nothing about all the provocative stuff on almost every page...even ads.
