I am an African currently residing in the US. My father who lives in Ghana sent a copy of NEWAFRICAN to me last year and since then I have become HOOKED!I subscribe religiously. It pains me that I did not discover it before. A very well presented magazine. The piece featured in every edition are COLLECTOR'S ITEMS (no kidding). It presents stories about the continent and the world giving balanced views from the past, the present and insights into the potential future implications!! I learn so much history about Africa and the world. You will not regret it trust me. I eagerly look forward to EVERY EDITION

New African is a generally well-written magazine, covering a wide variety of topics for the whole continent. However it seems to have a strong pro-Mugabe (Zimbabwe) bias, to the point that many suspect it is a ZANU party mouthpiece. As with any media, read critically and compare to other sources.

"New African" is one of the most in-depth journal available focusing on reporting on political, social and cultural developments in Africa, analysis of economic activities, sport, music and even art and fashion. It is an interesting blend of current issues and insightful analysis of activities and events on the continent.

While one should not rely on one magazine for their news and perspectives, I would count on New African to have the last word on most topics pertaining to the African continent.

For those who want to know what is going on in Africa, this magazine is a must-read. It covers things going on in places often neglected by other magazines. New African is fairly balanced in its reporting, entertaining and rooted in a deep understanding of African history and today's world.

I'm a new subscriber to NW Chess. The magazine is a black & white 30(ish) page newspaper type magazine with local (Washington & Oregon) chess news, events, and games. It is well presented and the games are entertaining to play through. I think I like it mose because it doesn't have hundreds of games (it isn't overwhelming) and it isn't written only for the 2000+ player as some chess magazines are. I have found it beneficial and a worthwhile way to both learn about chess and to keep informed with local events. Get a subscription, you'll love it!

Thomas & Friends

My 4 year old, according to my wife, can't put this one down. Ever since the stories started coming, it has been non stop reading. This is the type of books that I want for my children.

My son loves this. But a little pricey compared to the other more substantial mags like Ranger Rick.

I paid Amazon for a 52 week subscription and received a 39 week subscription. I didn't find this out, of course, until about week 42 when I realized that I hadn't had an issue in a few weeks. It took hours on the phone for them to even to find out this information.

Here's what you are doing when you buy this:

Order through Amazon, Amazon gives your money to Magazine Express, Magazine Express buys a subscription from Hola. This means that if there is a problem you have to wait forever for them to go through the entire chain of people.

By the way, you can order Hola from and PAY LESS (just a few dollars, but it IS cheaper).

My family and I recently spent 3 years in Barcelona, so upon our return to the States I was looking foward to getting a subscription to "Hola," and ordering it through Amazon seemed the easiest way to go about doing that.

I ordered a year's subscription to "Hola" on Amazon in February 2005. The first issue, after many calls to the 1-800 magazine subscription number provided by Amazon, arrived at the end of May 2005.

However, I was assured by Amazon's subscription 1-800 customer service number that I would receive a full year's subscription: May 2005 to May 2006.

However, all I received were 9 months of "Hola" for my one-year $220 subscription. Very disappointing for such an expensive subscription.

Appaprently others have had the same experience. So, unless you want to spend over $200 to receive only 8 or 9 months of this magazine, avoid subscribing through Amazon.

It is June 6, 2011 and i still have not receive my order from MArch 3rd I was suppose to receive my 1st issue in April and still waiting. I have tried to contact someone twice already for a refund and still no luck...I am so angry becuase I want to get a refund but no one can't email me back!!!!Please can someone tell me how to get ahold of someone???

Point de Vue is a very good magazine. I like it. However, I don't think I will renew my subscription. Delivery by Amazon, after a very long waiting period for the first issue has been SPOTTY, to say the least. It is a weekly magazine, but I get them lumped into twos, now and then. No continuity. Too expensive for that kind of so-so service.

Popular Mechanics (1-year auto-renewal)

My rating is for the overall package of magazine and subscription service.

The subscriptions are handled by BuySub and they appear to be totally incompetent. I ordered Popular Mechanics and several other magazine subscriptions. I have an Amazon account, my address is totally correct, I was charged for the subscriptions, and all were fine except the one handled by BuySub ... somehow the goons at BuySub screwed up my address so badly that the USPS refused to deliver the magazine. BuySub/Hearst offers no phone call and their "Contact Us" page doesn't always work, so I had to resort to sending queries via email. I corrected my address and explaind that I was missing 2 issues according to their record of when my subscription started. They responded telling me that they would send only 1 of the 2 issues. They never sent that issue, nor did my subscription resume after I corrected the address. I contacted them again and told them I was now missing 3 issues and told them they needed to send the issues or extend my subscription. They responded with "Your request to cancel your subscription has been received".

TOTAL INCOMPETENCE! I did not request to cancel my subscription, I requested the missing issues or an extension. If they're going to be idiots and cancel my subscription, could they tell me if I'm being reimbursed? I had to respond again, and now I'm going to contact my credit card company and see if they can do anything for me.

NEVER AGAIN will I subscribe to any magazine handled by BuySub. I have wasted a huge amount of time trying to correct the mistakes that THEY made. They took my money right away and didn't deliver. Totally shabby.

Popular Mechanics is a Jack-of-All-Trades Magazine. I have been an avid reader since high school picking up every other issue or so at local newsstands. I only recently finally got smart and picked up a subscription. For the price you can't go wrong. PM is filled with informative articles on everything ranging from new technology, world events, woodworking tips, car care, automotive design, and computers. PM does not delve to deep into any particular subject, rather it gives you a broad view of all of them.

In each issue your likely to find tips on how to change and fix a flat tire on your car, plans on how to build wood furniture, reviews on new cars, and reports on upcoming technology. The articles are always interesting and provide enough information to let you do a little more digging if the subject matter sparks your interest. Jay Leno even writes an automotive section that is always enjoyable to read.

The product reviews are informative and have helped me with numerous purchases ranging from new cars, snow blowers, power tools, dirt bikes and the like. I would recommend this magazine to anyone interested in any of the mentioned subjects but can't afford 40 different subscriptions to cover them all.

For me, this magazine has it all: technology, automotive, aviation, boats, home repair, and much more. It gives a great overview of what is happening in many industries and hobbies. I have generally read the entire issue two days after I have received it, and I don't have a lot of free time for reading.

One of the best aspects of this magazine is that is does not take itself too seriously. It does a great job creating articles that are informative and detailed, but leaves room for fun and offbeat topics too.

Last year Popular Mechanics readers got to follow a PM sponsored NASCAR car. This year they have switched to a top fuel dragster. These articles give you a good behind the sense look at what it takes to race these impressive vehicles.

If racing is not your style, checkout the woodworking section where a myriad of woodworking projects are presented. Don't forget their annual woodworkers special with a whole host of plans in a single issue.

Got a leaky water heater? Check the home repair section. Car on the fritz? Check the auto repair section. Wondering what is new in the military? Watch for the frequent special articles on the Special Forces and their hardware. This magazine has a great deal to offer!

11 weeks have gone by and I have yet to recieve an issue. What burns me up is that I have recieved a RE-SUBSCRIBE letter in the mail from the publisher promising to make sure I dont miss an issue if I pay up for ANOTHER year.

Subscription fulfillment on this is very poor. I ordered in July and still haven't received the 1st issue as of the end of October. I called Hearst in September and they told me I should receive the 1st issue in October. In October, they tell me the 1st issue is coming in Decmber and blame Amazon for submitting with a December start date (back in July? and with evidence to the contrary). Either way, can't recommend ordering through Amazon or from this publisher.

The Beer Connoisseur Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Very little content for the price. Overly sized so that it won't fit with any other magazine stacks. There are interesting articles sometimes but it's just not enough content for the price and at only 4 issues a year, why do they even bother? I'll stick to Brew Your Own and Zymurgy.

they have a 4 week shipping window for the issue and then a 1-3 week shipping window for the delivery of it. I understand that it is a quarterly magazine, but I have received one issue since Oct 2012. They said that I should get my issue any day and that was on May 30. It is June 14th and still no magazine. I am not impressed with their delivery schedule at all. The magazine its self is nice, but not very big to take 4 months to produce. THe recipient was happy with it, but not happy that he has to wait all of this time for another issue.

I purchased a 2 year subscription to this magazine last July through a deal website (groupon, livingsocial, crowdsavings, etc.). I think the articles are well written and I even enjoy the write ups in the beer review section. What I don't like is it is close to going on 10 months and I have only ever received 2 issues. I contacted the magazine late last year to inquire about why I had not received the fall/autumn issue. They ensured me that I will get all 8 of my issues that I paid for, but they didn't have time to create a fall issue. They didn't say it was behind, they just said I will get a winter issue, which showed up at the beginning of January. Overall the magazine is written well with good content, when you can read it. I didn't think by signing up for 8 issues, it would wind up being a 4 year subscription. Oh well, I'll keep waiting BC mag.

Tele Culinaria

This magazine has been around for over 30 years. It was my mother's favorite cooking magazine and she had hundreds of them. It always has great recipes and articles. If you enjoy Portuguese food this is the one for you. Always a good combination of traditional and modern recipes.

I sure miss having it around... it's a bit pricey to subscribe to here in the US, but I might get it for myself as a Christmas present!

This service, like the classified advertising, is free to subscribers. Also included is the "what's on" section that lets collectors know about fairs, societies, auctions etc.

San Francisco

A few months ago this magazine was transformed into one of those huge glossy coffee table type shi-shi magazines. 75% of the magazine consists of advertisements for hi-priced goods now. It's not worth subscribing to

This used to be a great (and medium-sized) magazine with at least one great article in every issue. Last year the format was changed & the darned thing is so big I can't read it in bed. At last look they still had at least one interesting article, but it is surrounded by page after page of mind-numbing glossy ads, with more pages of pictures of the SF social set.

I can't imagine what this costs to mail out; believe me, it is no longer worth the postage.
