House: Design Architecture Lifestyle

House: Design Architecture Lifestylethis has to be the worst magazine ever... total waste. full of ads. nothing else.

Don't be fooled by the $5 subscription price, as this "magazine" is just pages of ads for home design companies located in Long Island, New York. My first issue contained not even one article -just a series of ads. On the plus side, one call to Amazon led to a $5 refund.

Magazine: REALLY BAD

Amazon Customer Service: EXCELLENT

Buy House: Design Architecture Lifestyle Now

I got this magazine at a discount rate, hoping to see different ideas to design and upgrade rooms because home decorating is not my forte. This magazine is full of pictures of homes and products that cost HUGE amounts of money. I gave it two stars only because the right audience might find it inspiringperhaps upcoming architects or insanely rich people who have no idea how to decorate? No one I know could come close to actually affording the lavish home and room decor featured in the articles and ads. If you don't make millions per year, I don't think this mag will appeal unless you are someone who is entertained by merely seeing the homes of extremely rich people. Personally, I honestly put it in the recycling bin as soon as it comes, because there is nothing in this magazine that I can relate to or remotely afford. (Even if I did have that kind of money, I can't imagine paying the insane prices listed on the items featured anyway.)

This magazine is definitely not intended for working class folks. The designs and materials are quite extravagant. Makes me wonder who lives in these places.

Want House: Design Architecture Lifestyle Discount?

This magazine pretty much went straight to the thrash as soon as it got to me. There is absolutely no useful info in the magazine. I'm very disappointed with the subscription. There are just too many ads. The content is like one of those free magazines that you can pick off the street.

I tried to be a good citizen, asking them to stop sending me the magazine without a refund. But I still receive it in the mail. I feel bad about wasting the paper. Good thing is the subscription will end in March.

Concho River Review

Concho River ReviewThe first issue of Concho River Review I purchased (at Brazos Bookstore, Houston) was a mixture between the same old "avantgarde, creative" stuff and a few insightful pieces. The latest issue, Volume XX, is a total disaster: it's entirely the kind of machine-stamped, workshop-generated, topicless, "unique" in setting but mindless in execution, trendy garbage. There is nothing of literary value here although the poem "Lapse" is amusing. I hope Concho River Review gets off the MFA trip it is on and resumes printing material that is actually critical of the assumptions we make, conveys learning instead of emotional sure bets, and has something at all to say, because right now this is a wasteland of zero value.

Health (1-year auto-renewal)

HealthIn general many health magazines seem to focus on glamour and make you wonder what's wrong with you since you can't be a size 2, work out for 3 hours a day, balance a job, family and whatever else life throws your way. The magazine comes with several articles a month that focus on looking good, exercise plans, diet tips, stress relief, and a few that promote good mental health. I like this because its low key and sensible. This magazine isn't set out to change your life, but enhance what you have and show you a few new ideas.

I received two free trial issues in order to give the magazine a chance before subscribing. Boy, am I glad I didn't subscribe! The magazine is nothing but fluff good only for people who mostly want to flip through and look at pictures not for people who actually want informed articles and reports on health.

I have subscribed to various magazines for years, and paid pretty prices too, but this modestly priced magazine is one of my favorites. It really has a variety of articles, fact based, no nonsense. I love the exercise part, I teach the yoga type exercises to my satff at work. This puts "self" to shame. Check it out for yourself . I give it as a christmas gift to my friends.

I picked up a copy of Health at my local grocery store, mostly out of curiosity. I found myself enjoying it enough so that I will be ordering a subscription. Here's why:

1.It encompasses every facet of health, not just diet or exercise. As one reviewer noted, it is broken down into categories: Looks, Living, Moving, Feeling, and Flavor (it was just redone). The articles in each seem to be well-written and are enjoyable. I particularly enjoy the Feeling and Living sections, as they are something that is rarely found in other magazines.

2. Unlike many other magazines, I found myself marking or wanting to mark so many pages to keep or check out further that in ended up being a good part of the magazine. I, like most others, enjoy getting the most for my money.

While everyone has a different idea of what constitutes a "good" magazine, this one will soon be a regular fixture in our house.

I was given HEALTH magazine as a gift, and have enjoyed six months worth at the present time. I'm a 40 something, formerly fit mother who still believes in herself enough to know that someday...I can be 'fit' again. This magazine seems right up my alley. It addresses common health issues with clear, short articles and yet isn't packed with ads so that the articles get lost. Some recipes, some exercises, some discussions, while remaining entertaining too.

You would be wasting your money if you are already fitness oriented and off to the gym to meet your trainer, but if you are in need of an encouraging, helpful, entertaining read that will inspire versus guilt you into getting healthier, this magazine is for you.

Update: 6/24/12

I've been an avid HEALTH reader for years now, and it DID inspire me to get healthier and fitter. Over time I've lost 22 pounds and lots of inches. I'm stronger and more knowledgeable (thanks in part to HEALTH) about health-related issues that are common with my age group. I met and maintained my goals by starting slowly, with realistic goals. Despite being a self-proclaimed 'gym rat' now, I still enjoy HEALTH magazine. HEALTH keeps it 'real' and I like that!

Digital Photo (1-year auto-renewal)

Digital PhotoI got a deal for a one year subscription for this magazine and I'm on my second issue. For the price that I paid, I'm not too disappointed. However, I don't know how happy I'd be if I had paid full price for this.

The magazine is more ads than articles. This would be understandable because advertisement is the lifeblood of print media. The disappointing part is that most of the few articles are also cleverly disguised gear ads rather than advice on techniques using existing gear that you might already have. Usually if they are giving advice about techniques you can apply, they recommend using a new, recently released piece of equipment. For example, there is an article on how to take macro photos. The article basically has blurbs on several different macro lens but doesn't explain any techniques or insights.

Also, with such a huge focus on gear, their 'reviews' are also basically ads. They don't really discuss pros and cons of equipment but discuss the purpose or specification of a lens, tripod, flash equipment, etc.

I can't say it's a total waste. There are a few inspiring photographs and I did learn a few things here and there. However, it would be nice if it had a bit more substance.

This one is worth passing up, unless you really like looking at gear ads.

I got this subscription for my daughter who'd just made her first big splurge on a Canon T4i. My hopes were it would have some nice articles (and photos) and plenty of good tips to help her 'find her photo style'. Instead it's loaded with equipment ads and articles. I'd have no problem if equipment was balanced with artistic and technical substance -'how-to's', if you will -or if there were a few artistic methods with accompanying photos thrown in.

I give 2 stars because for the price, I don't feel like I've totally thrown money away (though I do feel bad for the trees who gave their lives...).

Buy Digital Photo (1-year auto-renewal) Now

This magazine is basically a vehicle for manufacturer ads with a few "how to's" randomly thrown in, with little rhyme or reason. If you want to learn the basics of photography you'd be much better off going to your public library or buying a basic book or two. If you want a better overview of current cameras and lenses, go to or subscribe to Popular Photography. Even at a cheap rate, this magazine is just a rag.

Great magazine to get killer ideas from! If you are a photographer, student photographer, or hobbist this is a great magazine to get.

If you're looking for a really good photography magazine then this ain't it. I've been receiving Digital Photo for about a year and it sometimes has good articles. Other times I scan the magazine, find nothing worthwhile, and trash it. I won't renew.

Living Blues

Living BluesJust recently introduced to this magazine. I was impressed with the quality of the writing and selection of topics. The fact that this magazine is published by a university that's working to preserve the historical roots of the blues is great.

Living Blues is the Best Blues Magazine I have ever seen. Their interviews cover the famous as well as the not so famous. It is an excellent way to learn the history of the Blues. It also serves as a record keeper of sorts. ie a rundown on the charts, who is playing and where, Feature articles. Just an all around great magazine.

The only problem I encountered from time to time is not recieving the magazine. I think someone was ripping it off

Blues lovers should check out the Mississippi double issue (vol. 35, #2 & #3). This is an in-depth look at the blues scenes (historical and living) of blues performers, locations, events, etc. all over the state.

Quick Printing

Quick PrintingBefore shelling out $66 for this magazine, you should check out their Web site and see if you qualify for a free subscription since most of their subscribers do get the magazine without paying for it.

This is not a publication for consumers but professional printers and will not be of much interest to people who are looking for information on the subject of printing technology. It has a marketing and management orientation and is driven primarily by ad sales, so you will not read much that is controversial or critical of advertisers in this publication. Articles are generally written to support monthly advertising themes.

You might also want to check out these similar magazines before spending any money to get Quick Printing: Graphic Arts Monthly ( Instant and Small Commercial Printer () and American Printer ( These are also available for free to professional printers and other qualified subscribers.

Personal Real Estate Investor

Personal Real Estate InvestorPurchased this at local book store at first then signed up for a year. Like reviewer in Indiana I will renew too. Lots of ads, but someone has to pay for cost of the nice paper! Has given me some good websites to visit and sent me the right direction.

Have gotten some good tips and information from this magazine. Recieved the magazine for 1 year now and will renew my subscription

Mr. Andrew Waite sent me an unsolicited email because I subscribed to his magazine. It was a scam that cost me $8,000. It was suppose to be for mortgage modifications, but nothing more than a scam. This one year subscription cost me $8,000. To this day, I don't know if he's just a marketer who will send anything to his subscribers as long as it pays him money, or if he was involved in this scam. Either way, I'd be very wary of the advice he and his magazine gives you.
