Just Labs

Just LabsMy husband and I subscribed to this magazine not long after we got our yellow lab pup. It always includes useful articles about training and caring for your lab, and also lots of photos of labs submitted by subscribers. I have to say the photos are what I look at first. Subscribers also can submit stories about their lab that has passed away, how having that lab affected their life, and other stories about their experiences with labs. If you own a lab or love labs you really need to subscribe to this magazine. When we are done reading our copy we give it to our son to read who has 3 labs himself. I'm ordering a subscription now for our neighbor girls who just adopted a lab pup. I just wish it were a monthly magazine instead of bi-monthly.

For anyone who loves Labs, this magazine is the best! I love the insight different articles have on these amazing dogs! Look forward to each magazine and read from cover to cover. The tips and tricks each magazine offers is a blessing to new Lab owners as well as "seasoned" owners . I recommend highly!

This magazine has a great blend of fun, poignant, and serious articles. Our 11 year old lab has two serious health issues which I first read about in Just Labs, as they are relatively common conditions with labs. When he started exhibiting symptoms I referred back to the articles and was able to recognize the similarities, therefore enabling me to discuss things with our vet armed with a bit of knowledge. For their health articles alone I will always be grateful to Just Labs.

La Settimana Enigmistica

La Settimana EnigmisticaThe magazine itself is the classic Italian puzzle magazine, but the delivery to the U.S. is unreliable--it runs routinely 2 weeks behind, and can go as much as a month before two or three issues show up together.

I got hooked on this magazine while living in Italy I'd buy it every week without fail! Good crosswords, comics and brainteasers will keep you occupied and will help you if you're brushing up on your italian.(However, you should have a pretty good grasp of the language before attempting any of the puzzles)

For Italian language teachers I'd get a subscription for the class if I were you!

This is a wonderful Italian Magazine, filled with Crossword Puzzles and other fun puzzles. It arrives weekly so you always have a new one to enjoy A+++++++

La Settimana Enigmistica has to be the world's best puzzle magazine. When I lived in Rome, I bought it every week at the local kiosk. It is full not only of crosswords, but also of intricate puzzles, such as anagrams, monoverbs, changes of vowels or consonants, cryptograms, and other brain teasers--all in Italian. It also has cartoons. The puzzles begin easy, and become harder later in the book.

My favorites are the rebuses, fascinating picture puzzles that depict one thing and, when solved, state something completely different. For instance, a dog barking (latra), the letters GI, two beavers (castori), the letters ADA, and blackberries on a bush (more) translate to "La Tragica Storia d'Amore"--or The Tragic Story of Love. The editors give you the numbers of letters in each word as an aid (e.g., in this puzzle, 2, 7, 6, 1, 5). At any rate, they are great fun.

La Settimana Enigmistica--The Weekly Puzzler--is wildly popular in Italy among all sorts of people. For instance, one cannot get on a bus or a train without seeing business men, college students, well-dressed women, and just plain folks, pencil in hand, working out the puzzles. You will see copies of the magazine on the front seats of taxis; the drivers solve the puzzles between fares. If you are on a long train ride, La Settimana Enigmistica represents a good conversation opener. Someone is always on hand to give you a hint, for instance, about la parola giusta that will help solve the puzzle.

For anyone who wants to achieve proficiency in Italian, La Settimana Enigmistica is just the thing. But beware, it is addictive!

If only it weren't so expensive! (Fortunately I have a large stash left over from the 1980's and 1990's, which ease any enigmistic cravings I might still have.)

Reptiles (1-year)

ReptilesI'm in agreement with other reviewers that the magazine does tend to focus too much on exotic species, from the Galapagos Islands to Madagascar; but, for the most part, I found this to be tempered by many very helpful articles for the average herp owner. I have 2 boas, some chameleons, an iguana, and a python--and I believe that "Reptiles" focus on all reptiles has given me a better understanding of my own. This isn't necessarily geared 100% toward the pet owner, but more for the overall enthusiast.

I've subscribed to Reptiles for a couple of years. I also subscribe to other magazines published by Bow Tie, including Cat Fancy, Dog Fancy, and Bird Talk. Reptiles is definitely the best of the bunch. Their articles tend to be longer and far more substantive than the others. The only reptiles I keep are turtles, but I find it quite fascinating to learn about the many species featured, even ones I'm sure I'll never have. In fact, I've learned that there are some critters I shouldn't have--their needs and mine would never mesh. Writers are often people who breed and raise the animal. I like it that they don't tell you to "check with your vet" every third paragraph--they just tell you what works for them. Of course, some of these species are quite rare in captivity and only a very specialized vet would be familiar with them.

I'd recommend this magazine for people who are generally interested in reptiles and for those who are thinking of getting a reptile pet. You may find yourself introduced to some animals you'd never thought of keeping. It may be too basic for those with lots of experience, but for the rest of us it's a great source of general knowledge.

The only downside is the ads. The classifieds are basically the same every month. Particular product ads are often matched to the articles--ok I guess, but it sometimes makes you wonder whether the advertisers or the editors are driving the magazine. However, Bird Talk and Cat Fancy are much worse in this regard.

I have had the same problem that a previous reviewer said. I have had a Reptiles magazine subscription a few years back and a current one. The previous order had a missing issue and my subscription was not extended. Now my most recent has annoyed me. I recieved three issues, and then no more isues. Even though the Reptiles mag site says I should have recieved at least two issues since then, and I got a supposed extension. After this subscription, no more. I'll do as I have in the past, purchase them as I see them and only if the subjects interest me. So the warning is that this magazine can be unreliable.

I'm a solid reader of Reptiles for 3 years now. I LOVE IT! Before I was ever keeping and breeding reptiles myself, I was enjoying this magazine. Every issue is chocked full of pictures and information beyond belief, and it's a good way to shop around to see who's breeding what this year. Great magazine, it's a must get for any herper or plain ol person!

I was already a subscriber to reptiles magazine, but Amazon was offering it at a great price. This day and age, I almost think that magazines are worthless; since I can get all the information I need from the internet. But this publication is always a great read. They have monthly contests and show off drawings and the pictures are always great. My wife and I always turn to the "Guess that skull" challenge every time the new issue shows up to see who can figure it out first.
