Green Left Weekly

Green Left Weekly"Green Left Weekly", published by the Democratic Socialist Party, bills itself as "Australia's radical newspaper" and an alternative to the corporate-controlled media.

I have read "Green Left Weekly" both in print and online for over a decade now, though my relatives always try to dissuade me because they feel it angers me. The newspaper is indeed extremely preachy and uncompromising, never allowing the rulers they despise any compromise. The language is often terribly ranty and exaggerated, focusing consistently on the profit system that the paper believes responsible for social and ecological problems. It is also very repetitive because the focus and topics covered are so similar in every issue. It would really be a lot better if the radical left learnt that low-frequency periodicals are the best medium for carrying their messages, because they become less repetitive and preachy without losing the radically uncompromising nature of their message.

Whilst this perspective makes "Green Left Weekly" difficult as regular reading, the paper nonetheless possesses a good deal of useful information, especially about Australia's appalling environmental record, which it has (rightly) attacked ever since being first published. These messages do not fit in with the popular perspective in an extremely socially conservative country especially of its working classes whom "Green Left Weekly" claim to represent but scientifically there is no doubt of their truth.

"Green Left Weekly" also has political problems. Whilst its claims about Cuba's excellent environmental record may be true, claims that Cuba is a democracy are very dubious and are most likely related to the newspaper's tendency to blame the US and its rulers for almost every problem. The paper does not explain why many refugees leave Cuba, nor that Cuba has a powerful secret police (the G2) whose archives have never been touched by outsiders.

Nonetheless, "Green Left Weekly" is worth a read for the information it provides that no-one in Australia or abroad tends to hear. Would undoubtedly be better as a monthly or quarterly periodical that was less repetitive, though not to mention its readers' inability to achieve desperately-needed communication with the mass of Australians.

This one newspaper is a light in Australian news, one of the most restricted and corporate owned in the world. It helps keep alive the independent media. There are some negatives though. It can become become repetitive and uses ranting language occasionally eg. "Reactionary" "Labour Bondage" but overall it takes another perspective and global events that altough important are overlooked by the mainstream media.

Farm & Ranch Living

Farm & Ranch LivingThis is a great magazine that gives the reader great ideas in the workings of a small farm or ranch. A very good overall go-to publication to learn new skills and ideas about what works and what doesn't.

We subscribed for several years and then as we cut back on expenses, we let this lapse. Well, we missed it so that we subscribed once again after four years. Oh, how we missed it. It has very interesting diaries from different family farms and a person can see how life is out on the farm and beautiful photos. When we received our new first issue, my husband said he read it word for word, cover to cover and that's the first time in a very long time that he could say that about a magazine!

Junior Baseball

Junior BaseballThis is a great kids magazine for the baseball lover in your house. My little buddy is 8 and I have given him this gift for the last 2 years and it really helped to improve his reading skills because he wanted to know everything in the magazine!

I found this magazine on the Amazon Web-site and decided to take out a shorter subscription to see if he liked it. He sure did. He is 7-1/2 years old and loves baseball. After the first issue, he is already asking me to please keep getting it for him. He loves the tips, etc. from the big league players that he recognizes from games on TV. Very excellent magazine for boys, and maybe girls, who are playing and getting interested in baseball. Also contains some interesting puzzles, etc. to give it great variety.

American Archaeology

American ArchaeologyAmerican Archaeology is the only national magazine dedicated to covering the archaeology of the Americas. The publication offers readers a chance to learn about the exciting world of archaeology and presents information in an easily accessible way. In addition to highlighting the outstanding work of The Archaeological Conservancy, American Archaeology covers the latest in significant research and discovery, and is a favorite among professionals and amateurs in the field. A must have for anyone interested in this topic!

I have supported the Archaeological Conservancy for years and have always enjoyed their magazine. The stories covered are diverse and interesting, covering sites across America.

MAD Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

MAD MagazineThe magazine is hyper liberal which I am but honestly I keep politics and humor in two different parts of my brain. I still love it though. My only grip is they ship in no protection other than a light paper cover so the magazine usually looks awful after going through the mail system. For the cost they charge they should at least be in a plastic bag like every other magazine.

I started reading this magazine in the early 90's, when I was a kid. My dad had a few from the 60's and 70's, and I have expanded my collection since then to include a good amount from the 80's. That stuff was brilliant.

Artists and writers die, we know that. New artists and writers can be good, but the MAD magazine of the 2000's isn't worth buying. Why did MAD start putting in ads? Wasn't it making enough money by itself? I loved MAD for the fact that it was ad-free, and the brilliant writing and artwork, laced with biting satire. Now, the humor in there is more of the "potty humor" level, and is the kind of thing juveniles laugh over.

Now it's not worth the paper it's printed on, and CRACKED magazine has gone the same way and already ended publication several years ago. Last time I read a MAD magazine, I found myself completely bored and impatient with it, and wondering how such a great magazine could have become so lackluster.

Cottage Journal

Cottage JournalThis magazine is so wonderful!! Chocked full of wonderful decor and recipes!! The reader who said that it was cottage is using her description of what cottage is to define what she feels is cottage. . .but her definition of cottage only encompasses a portion of the market and they are concerned with the whole market. . .to me cottage is more of a feeling. I love all kinds of cottages. . .beach, mountain etc. Each has more of specific feel but all are cottages. Magazine is great you will not be disappointed unless you are expecting only one type of cottage.

I simply adore the first Winter issue of The Cottage Journal! It is so nice to have a winter-themed issue in addition to the Christmas/holiday-themed issue. Everything about this magazine is warm and cozy with tons of fireplace and cabin settings along with snowy scenery. It is definitely shows cold weather cottage style and decor. I only wish I could visit and recreate the rooms shown! I am looking forward to seeing the Spring issue with all its pretty floral-themed cottages and bright colors!

Just gotta say this magazine is NOT my idea of "cottage". I like quaint, shabby, charming, cute, pretty, vintage, antique, cozy, etc. To me those words define the "cottage" look. So I subscribed.

I just received the winter issue of Cottage Journal & it is, in one word, BROWN. All the pictures are brown brown wood, brown furniture, brown dishes, brown fabric, just brown. Now that is just not cottage to me. Where is the quaint, the chintz, the white, the cream, the shabby, the vintage, the cozy??? the pink, the aqua, the yellow, the green??? Have these people ever seen cottage decor? I will say this is a really good quality magazine with tons of pictures, nice & large, cover to cover just not pictures of anything I would want to copy in my own home some are downright ugly. I don't get it they should have named the magazine whatever is opposite to "cottage" journal. I will not be renewing my subscription $24 for 6 issues.
