Barron's

Barron'sOn any list of pure English-language business reportage, BARRON'S would figure in the top ten. This newspaper-style weekly compiles more numbers than just about any other publication.

Though 'fluff' is not a word commonly associated with the Wall Street Journal, think of BARRON'S as 'WSJ without the fluff'. That's how focused it is.

Electronic availability of business numbers has pushed BARRON'S off the 'must read' list, though it has its guild of old faithful readers who consider nothing else its equal. Published by Dow Jones, it is as focused on Wall Street as any publication could be.

Business people appreciate its 'Review & Preview' section, which at a glance brings a reader up to speed on last week's business news leaders and next week's announcement and world holidays affecting business.

WSJ and the Economist will give you more extensive analysis.

Without slighting its columns and feature articles, BARRON'S is for the pure numbers guys and gals among us. They're all in here. Honest.

Barron's is a popular magazine/newspaper that helps investors keep abreast of financial markets, industry news, economic trends, profit forecasts, and other related topics. This publication bills itself as the magazine of the Dow Jones, and it offers investors and other financial gurus some solid and timely financial reading.

Many people who read Barron's head directly to the Market Week section in order to catch up on the latest investment prices. Each weekly issue of Barron's offers plenty of stock tables, Commodities Pricing, Options market pricing, etc., so it makes sense that a concerned investor would turn to this section first, in order to check investment prices. But Barron's is much more than a collection of statistical tables. Each issue contains a large number of featured articles and regular columns and there are very few departments. The bulk of each issue is dedicated to short articles about specific companies, economic concerns, innovative technology, Wall Street trends, and other noteworthy topics.

Barron's is a very expensive publication, but among its many good points is the fact that it is published weekly and therefore is very up to date and timely. If you're an investor, you are fully aware of the importance of timely information and Barron's provides exactly that. Whether the subject is the high price of oil, corporate takeovers, or volatile interest rates, Barron's is right there, offering a timely article about the important issues of the day.

One other noticeable fact about Barron's is that devotes only a minimal amount of space to advertisements. There are some ads, and they are usually clustered in the first part of each issue. Most all of the ads are relevant to the subject matter of the magazine, and it is common to see ads for insurance companies, mutual funds, brokerage services, and the like. Because the ads are almost all about finance, they tend to blend into the articles and you do not notice them like you notice the ads in other magazines.

Investors, financial professionals, and concerned citizens like to keep up to date on financial and economic affairs and for these individuals, Barron's ranks as one of the best financial publications available today. The articles are quite thorough for such a short magazine and while some articles can get a little too advanced for the novice investor, there is still much to be learned in every issue of Barron's. Timely financial data, great writing, and relevant articles make Barron's a magazine worth reading for those with an interest in the subject of finance and investments.

I recently switched my subscription from the Wall Street Journal to Barron's simplyl because I could not keep up with the Journal. I would see piles and piles of papers that I had yet to get to and my recycle bin got fuller and fuller. I decided that I would switch to a weekly financial periodical and I have to say that I have enjoyed Barron's immensley.

The editorial articles are well written and have an excellent perspective on the previous weeks financial news along with an outlook for what is ahead. You Market Labratory which is essentially stock/bond prices for the week is a bit large but has information that I can't find elsewhere. I don't rely on that information since access to the web makes it easy to have that info with one click.

Ever since switching I have been actually able to get through each issue every week. It is a nice feeling to not have it piled up everywhere. The biggest dissadvantage is that it is a review of a whole week reather than an each day summation. That is to be expected however since it only gets to my mailbox every Sat morning. If you are thinking about switching because you just don't have the time but want your dose of financial insight in hard copy, then definately switch to Barron's

I understand that the average net worth of a Barron's subscriber is just under three million dollars. I read Barron's for the same reason I read CIO magazine. I want to know what the leaders are reading. I do use the articles in Barron's as investment leads. I recently read about the good prospects of a company and took a small position in it and have been rewarded by a 19% gain in under three months. This is the third time in a year I have had such results with a Barron's pick. I suggest you give it a try by reading a issue on the Sunday it is available and watch any company's stock that they praise for a week and see how you would have done.

Also it is just excellent quality writing and entertaining.

USA Today : the Nations Newspaper - 1 Year Subscription

USA Today : the Nations Newspaper - 1 Year SubscriptionIf you are already a subscriber to USA Today and just want to renew, you should probably wait until your existing subscription is about to expire before ordering through amazon. USA Today doesn't seem to be able to make the link between the existing subscription and one ordered through a 3rd-party, resulting in a less-than-full year extension. I like the paper tho it is the only way I get national sports news; my local paper only covers the local teams.

My nephew was sentenced to 24 years in the "Ham" for a stupid stunt when he was 17 (attempted robbery with two 16 year old boys). The "Ham" is an old state prison near Lovelady, Texas. Clyde, from Bonnie and Clyde, served time there. There are no TVs, little access to outside information, no air conditioning or heating, and certainly no cell phones.

Families are not allowed to send gifts. The only option families have is to pay a publisher to send books and magazines. Even these are reviewed by the prison officials for "acceptable" content. You can't send holiday gifts, nothing but letters, books and magazines. I received an official letter from a prison official saying "you can't send extra stamps in your letters.. it's a 'violation'".

Well my nephew loves USA Today! It's the best source of news and cultural information that's printed daily, and it's a great holiday gift. His release date is not for another 4 years, but since rehabilitation is mostly "virtual" in Texas, USA Today is helping to prepare him for the shock he'll have when he steps outside that prison after 24 years. Without USA Today he wouldn't know much about cell phones, personal computers, gps devices, etc. Now when we visit him, we can talk politics, technology and national events with him. Without USA Today our conversations revolve around prison food with is pretty bad.

Scale Aircraft Modelling

Scale Aircraft ModellingIf you're a serious aircraft modeler (modeller for the English amongst you) then SAM is the magazine for you. In addition to articles written by some of the most competent modelers in the industry you get three-view drawings and reference stories almost every month. I highly recommend this magazine.

I recently purchased a subscription to Scale Aircraft Modeling through Amazon.com. This magazine is published in Great Britain as are may other outstanding scale modeling magazines. I have found Scale Aircraft Modeling on occasion in book stores and hobby shops, but no place where I can have regular access. I found by accident I could get a subscription through Amazon and took advantage of it. It is expensive but also high quality. In order to give an honest review, I think one would have to consider several issues at once. This particular issue did not deal with subjects I am interested in; however I believe the next issue will. Overall the quality of the magazine including the graphics and the writing is very good. I have been building models almost 50 year starting in Cub Scouts in the mid 1960's. I am not a master, but I am able to improve my skills through reading publications like Scale Aircraft Modeler. Plus I already have more models that I can build for the next 25 years--since I don't need to buy more reading about how to build them well is very satisfying.

American Girl

American GirlAmerican Girl has always been one of my favorite magazines. I started subscribing when I was about seven, and I'm still getting it now, at age 13, in addition to the typical "teen magazines." This magazine has great craft and party ideas, and stories about real girls who've had different kinds of interesting experiences. From reading some of the Amazon reviews, I've gotten the idea that some girls are upset by the fact that American Girl publishes hardly any stories about boys, puberty, and makeup, and they have too many articles on crafts and parties. However, I think the fun craft and party ideas are part of what makes American Girl a great magazine. Although pre-teen life doesn't revolve around back-to-school themed sleepovers and Christmas ornament crafts, a girl doesn't need to shut crafts and parties out of her life the day she turns twelve. If you're looking for a magazine with advice on how to put on lip liner and deal with your crush, this may not be the magazine for you. But I think there are plenty of magazines with advice about makeup and boys, and American Girl is a great magazine, even if it doesn't talk much about those topics. I think many girls will enjoy this magazine, especially those between the ages of 8 and 12 (although there are eleven-year-olds who feel to old for the magazine, and fourteen-year-olds who still read it faithfully).

American Girl magazine is geared to girls aged 7-13. Much younger than that and many girls aren't reading at the appropriate level yet. Much older and they may be ready to move on. But honestly I'm surprised to read so many reviews by 10 or 11 year old girls who feel they're too old for this magazine. I don't believe girls that age NEED magazines based solely on makeup tricks, flirting with boys, etc. AG has articles such as dealing with relationships with friends. Like when you and your best friend start to grow apart. Or when she moves away. Articles like one about a girl whose family travels around the world on their sailboat for two years. Crafts that you can actually be proud to give at the age of 10.

Several reviewer have complained that the magazine is short and expensive. It is. But here's why: there is NO advertising (short of anything American Girl related). In many magazines, advertising accounts for easily half the pages. And advertising enables publishers to sell magazines for a low cost. AG has no advertising and so has to charge a fair price to produce it. I'm more than willing to pay for that kind of publication.

Parents ordering for your daughters, you know your girl. If you've got a 10 year old going on 16, this may not be for your child. If you have a precocious 6 year old, she might like it as well. AG is the kind of magazine I'm glad my daughters enjoy.

I am a sixteen-year-old former reader of American Girl who looked forward to it every month during elementary school. This magazine (as well as the entire company's products) encourages learning, thinking, creativity, independence, appreciation of the past, love of diversity, and self-expression. Finally in a world where half the women are encouraged to just be sex toys and the other half are taught that they should be obedient, unambitious, lower-class citizens and somehow enjoy their subhumanity, there is a voice telling girls to dream big, play hard, and explore themselves and their world. Educational, entertaining, and inspiring.

I'm a magazine major in college, and I'm studying AG this semester. I actually wanted to thank you all for your great comments on Amazonbeleive it or not, they're really helpful for my research paper!

I was a huge fan of AG as a young girl, and honstly, even at 18 I'm finding that more than just researching the magazine, I'm really enjoying reading it. This is, in my opinion, the only respectable magazine left for young girls. It will never ask you to grow up too quickly or to change who you are. It will never tell you there's a certain way to act around boys, or wear your hair, or paint your lips. It doesn't insult with dribble about scandals and celebrities. AG glorifies girls. It asks their input, and really cares about the feedback (yes, I found out from interviewing the founding editor that they actually file every piece of reader mail for future reference). I urge you to get this publication for your daughters. It is truly exceptional.

If you own a log home this magazine gives you many great ideas. I ordered it for my brother and sister-in-law before they bought their home. At this time it gave them important features and qualities of a well constructed log home. Now that they have bought their new home it is not unusual for them to show me an idea they have seen in this magazine which they would like to change or add in their home. I ordered this for them last year and have reordered it again for this next year. It is definitely a must have if you own a log home or plan to buy one in the near future.
